Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 30 - Did half term bingeing make you feel dirty? Then hop on board thread number 30!

BetsyBell · 07/11/2013 16:09

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I am confused Cuckoo. What have I said now???

Talkinpeace · 15/11/2013 17:21

MrsF you need to sit down with your DH and remind him that although he pays the bills, he needs to step up to the plate as otherwise he'll end up like his saddo overworking divorced colleagues (I'm sure you and he can name some)
I went to see my Sister yesterday with her baby.
Her new boss does email between 5 and 7 am at weekends but otherwise is devoted to spending time with his kids : he hope to save his marriage (ceo plc, way into 50% band)
much nicer than her old boss who objected to delays in responses just because it was lunchtime on a Sunday.
Both of you chose to have the kids. He either gets you a full time nanny or takes the time to get to know them.

ChocolatePudding · 15/11/2013 17:33

Wow this thread really flies!

Fab NSV MrsF
Toffee brill news
Cuckoo some of your posts really make me laugh (Michelin style cover up followed by post Christmas revelation!)

Gym night (for kids not me!). Means a full military style operation to pick three up from school, sneak car down back roads over all the humps to complaints by my DCs that they are feeling sick, but it paid off. No having to wait for car parking space at leisure centre and everyone safely arrived on time. Phew.

Was going to opt for a third FD today but feeling so chuffed I managed 2 quite easily on Mon and Wed so I wasn't really in the head space for it. After a couple of black teas on an empty stomach started to feel a bit queezy. Ended up eating brioche and then had a sudden need for bacon sarnies followed by 7 packs of funsize maltesers and at least 15 Bourbon biscuits (I eventually lost count tbh). U'd think after yesteray's sugar hangover (in bed by 9.30 after overdosing on sugar at lunch time). Anyway I've now polished off 2 packets of hula hoops.

If anyone can give BigChoc a run for their chocolate then its probably me. Downside is that I don't do the hours at the gym hence all the loose flabby bits. However I did start the 30 day squat challenge a few days ago so I'm hoping for buns of steel in 30 days time along with some shapely thighs. Ha ha!!

BsshBossh · 15/11/2013 17:37

I agree with Betsy (again!): life generally becomes much easier when they start school. You get peace, quiet and headspace again plus they become (generally) more independent and less clingy of you. DD's only Year 1 but already the difference in her is amazing and I'm finding parenting her a little more relaxing (well, as relaxing as it can be with a little chatterbox :)).

Heston Blumenthal shortcrust spiced mince pies from Waitrose: heavenly!

BsshBossh · 15/11/2013 17:42

And if you're ever in Crouch End, London, then have breakfast (well, I had lunch) at the Hot Pepper Jelly cafe. Black pudding stack on scrambled eggs with buttered toast, mushrooms, bacon, grilled tomatoes: heavenly.

God I love food.

ChocolatePudding · 15/11/2013 18:04

Totally agree. School makes a huge difference. And my number three is now in nursery half days. Finally getting some head space and able to get a bit of a break.

Feels like hell some days when they are really small but it will pass. Eventually. And don't feel pressured to have enjoy them all the time. I hate it when everyone tells you to make the most of it as they grow up so fast. Those people have obviously forgotten how hard it was!!!!

BigChocFrenzy · 15/11/2013 18:23

TGIF !
This was an NFD, but I didn't need breakfast, so a 42 hr fast, with 2 fasted training evenings on only 120 cals.
Smile
However, I had a huge lunch, then ended up with 11 hrs at work, running several complex mathematical models. Naturally, this required a huge tea.
Just arrived home, too tired to train, weekend now, so I'm diving into B&J.
This NFD will be way above TDEE, must avoid Frenzy.
^^

Lermontova 12-cal beef consomme: Being out in the wilds, I order a lot from Amazon, including this. It really is just 12 cals for a 400ml can. I don't know if it is available in supermarkets, as it was in the German food section:
www.amazon.co.uk/German-Lacroix-Double-Bouillon-400/dp/B003RFUOA6/ref=sr_1_3?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1384538536&sr=1-3&keywords=German+lacroix

Rubbish For toast etc, I like:

  • Pnut butter & banana sprinkled with cinammon
  • miracle whip, grated cheese, grated carrot, chopped apple
  • classic bacon & mushrooms
  • scrambled eggs & tomatoes
  • tinned mackerel or tuna & lemon

^^

ChocolatePudding · 15/11/2013 18:47

Mortified. Just been told by a lady at gymnastics that my 5 year old DS2 and 3 year old DD just came up to her trying to touch her chest, talking about boobies and willies and then proceeded and point to her face and say 'dirty'. All this whilst I was busy posting on here earlier!!

So much for kids getting easier as they get older Blush. I obviously feel like a hopeless mum who can't look after her kids properly (too preoccupied on my iphone) or teach them how to behave appropriately!!!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 15/11/2013 19:23

Toffee - the last sentence (crossed out) to me. I didn't understand it (unless I've missed something!) I only mention because I want to know what you took time to say X

Talkinpeace · 15/11/2013 19:39

at this rate this thread will be full by the end of the weekend.
Look after yourselves all. I've had a drink so shall pretty much stop typing this evening
(and DH is playing with high voltage electrics on the dining table which nadgers the wireless)

toffeesponge · 15/11/2013 19:41

Oh shucks. Have I messed up? I thought I had read that you had had some difficult times. Apologies if I have upset you.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/11/2013 19:50

Epic post warning

Hi cuckoo So you want to be an apprentice gym bunny ? Good for you !
Flowers

A gym has music, company, all the equipment and usually a creche. They would also have classes and create a special program for you. However, if you are really out in the wilds ..... Ok, no gym.

You can use tins of beans or small plastic bottles of water, but dumbbells have much better balance and grip (less chance of braining yourself). Depending on your starting strength (can you try in a shop?) you probably need a pair each of 2 kg and 4 kg dumbbells.

For shoulders / chest, try to do all these exercises 1-3 times per week, starting with 1 set of 8, then gradually increasing the number of sets to 3 and increasing the weights.
Google for videos of hunks doing these exercises, easier than my explanations!

Drink water !

Exhale when you exert your muscles, inhale in between.

Tricep dips
Choose a step or stable bench / chair / table. Then

  • Place your hands, palms downward, on any of the aforementioned objects with your back facing to it and your knees bent. Your fingers should be at the front edge of the step. The closer your feet are to your bum, the easier the exercise. So, when you get stronger move your feet further away.
-lower your bod down and push yourself back up, using only your arms. The triceps muscles this uses will trim your bingo wings.

Shoulder press
-Hold dumbbells / tins and stand
-bend your elbows and raise your upper arms to shoulder height, palms facing forwards, so the dumbbells are at ear level.
-push the dumbbells up and in until the ends of the dumbbells touch lightly, above your head

  • lower the dumbbells slowly back to ear level

Lateral raises
-Hold dumbbells and stand straight with the dumbells to your sides, feet shoulder width apart.

  • with elbows slightly bent and palms facing downwards, slowly raise the dumbells out to the side, until they are level with your head - do NOT go higher than this.
-lower the dumbells slowly to your sides. Note: Movement is concentrated on your shoulder joint, so minimise elbow movement

Front Raises

  • Hold dumbbells in both hands, palms facing your body, hanging just above the front of your thighs
  • raise dumbbells, with straight arms, until arms are above horizontal.
- lower slowly to starting position

Let me know when you need more exercises. Have fun !
Grin

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 15/11/2013 20:36

Noooooo Toffee Thanks haven't upset me at all. (Though I'm now worried about upsetting you!) I just didn't understand the last sentence, and I wanted to ask you what you meant because it matters to me if you have taken time to say something obviously supportive, that I have got what you meant. Here, I have copied and pasted......

and it is amazing when a friend tells you she doesn't know who you've done it when you just did.

Is it just me reading it wrong??

And Cake Wine Thanks sorry if I've done your head in! Grin

Bloody hell!! Now double post!

Wouldn't mind but not eve drinking!!!!

Yes Tip this thread could well and truly be done with! Hmm

toffeesponge · 15/11/2013 20:45

Cuckoo

What I meant was, a friend of mine told me she couldn't believe I hadn't gone off the rails considering what I have been through and it felt really good that someone thought I ha done really well, as I just got on with things rather than deciding to not fall off the rails. I just did what I did.

I thought I had read that you have had some challenges and are doing really well and I wanted to acknowledge that.

You certainly didn't upset me. I am annoyed at myself that I haven't explained myself very well when I am supposed to be a writer Blush.

Breadandwine · 15/11/2013 20:53

Cuckoo

Read your post yesterday, but I was unable to respond at the time. Really feel for you and your situation, and I’m so glad you felt able to unburden yourself on here.

I wanted to say I’ve seen many women get out from under – free themselves from the stultifying presence of an unsympathetic partner. And we can all point to successful second partnerships, so fingers crossed for you. I know you have a lot to offer.

You mentioned the ‘C’ word in your post – Control! And that’s what this wonderful WOL gives us – control over our weight and over our lives. Your determination and positive attitude to the future are very inspiring and will carry you through any possible setbacks, I feel sure.

One other thing – don’t think you don’t have any friends! You’re making new ones all the time on this thread! Smile

Oh, and on the subject of friends, what about your DD? She’ll be your best friend for the next 50 years or more, I'll be bound! Grin

Good luck with the studies and the new career! Flowers

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 15/11/2013 20:59

Hi cuckoo So you want to be an apprentice gym bunny ? Good for you !

.....errrrrr No! Just a few simple exercises at home! I am nowhere near ready for BCF level of activity! Nice try though Wink

Ok so I've read through. I get all of those, think I've done them on a Davina DVD. Although...... I have always considered myself to have a fairly normal, if not large, skull (good for appearing on telly apparently), but unless my head was half a foot taller than it is, the dumb bells will not be at ear level when arms at shoulder height! Grin

I am being a brat of course! I know the move you mean from your wonderful description. So I will persevere despite unusually long forearms/short squat head!

Could you please just confirm that these will improve the direction of southward facing boobies!! (Quite the catch eh! Won't be single for long! Wink )

Cheers BCF really appreciate your input. Hope the moderate frenzying is having desired effect! Cake

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 15/11/2013 21:37

BreadandWine - Thank you Wine

I was conscious of unburdening myself on this thread, as I'm sure there are many who find it dull as dishwater to hear the woes of a poster rather than sticking to topic ie 5:2.

Having said that, there is a connection between 5:2 and my current ability to cope with life the way I am managing to so far. Only I really know that to be true obviously, but for me (and I'm sure there must be others) it is delivering much more than a means to weight loss and the other associated benefits.

I loved getting to know you all during my lurking period, and it was because of how lovely you all are, that I couldn't help myself and had to join in. I have not been disappointed either. Everyone is genuinely supportive and lovely. This thread has such a positive vibe to it, it always cheers me up. I don't tend to post on forums (or anything else) except the odd diy one in past! So you lot definitely have something special going on here!

I do consider you to be friends, and feel very blessed with that.

I hope I have reached a point in life now, from which I can use my past experiences to steer myself through the bog, rather than push me under it! We shall see anyway!

Thanks again for the kind words. My dd is my world! Our relationship blooms day by day, and it is focusing on her and all the wonderful times we have ahead over the years, that is keeping my mind from wandering to darker areas.

I would be slightly disappointed at only another 50 yrs with her though! I was hoping with the aid of 5:2 to make it to treble digits at the very least! By which point I may just be joining BigChoc at the gym! Grin

Cuckoo!, Betsy! I have it and I'm giving it to you !

Our extension of NNN until Christmas is ....
HIFUC = Healthy IF Until Christmas

So we are all Doing HIFUC !
Come and join us.

^^

BigChocFrenzy · 15/11/2013 21:50

Cuckoo these exercises will improve the definition in your shoulder and pectoral regions.
However, re knockers, you are speaking to a woman who has always found A-cups roomy. Well, at least I'll never droop (cos nothing to droop)

To start the weekend, I rationed myself to 1 portion of B&J choc brownie fudge and 1 small orange ice tub. BUT, I had 3 of those silly little rice pud shot glasses at lunch and took 6 home for the weekend - so I have eaten 9 rice pud today, plus 2 huge meals and a bag of pistachios and ....

Just as well Saturday is an FD. Anyone else FDing ?

Talkinpeace · 15/11/2013 21:58

I just realised why this thread is the bestest
we have all sorts

  • gay / straight
  • old / young
  • men / women
  • parents / not
  • married / not
but for at least one day per week we all try to stay within the same rule and one really lovely thing is that we pot the "posts to keep" over onto the tips and hints threads" and those with no more weight to lose have a quiet natter on the "maintaners" threads but you are all worth it, and we are here

and more to the point, these threads move fast enough that the relationships/aibu bits flow off the page with support
and are much better here than there

AND, as I got flamed for on AIBU : fat is not healthy, but healthy comes before slim.
xx

BigChocFrenzy · 15/11/2013 22:10

toffee Finally caught up with all thread news. Wonderful to hear your DD is so much better.

toffeesponge · 15/11/2013 22:13

Thank you BCF. I am happier now she is home. It felt like I had something missing and of course I couldn't keep a proper eye on her.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 15/11/2013 23:02

Toffee Makes perfect sense now. Thanks So happy for you dd is home and well.

(switches on fake applause recording)......
BCF - I like it. How would one pronounce that exactly ....

BRAVO! Tip and can I just add to that list also.... A range of different personality types, physical abilities, physical health, mental health, careers..... just to name a few more.

The only way we are all the same, apart from 5:2, is that WE ARE ALL LOVELY!!

Night all!
