The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all

Well done bssh Smile

annie have a good time, walk plenty and skip meals when possible if other meals are large enough to last you ages! When we're away on All Inc we only have breakfast and dinner and I try not to drink my calories eg fruit juices, mocktails and milkshakes (teetotal).

toffee hope today is better for you. Enjoy your Cake

I'm fasting today, who's with me? Last night's pizza and chocolate mousse should keep me going til Sunday I think!

xCupidStuntx · 15/11/2013 08:45

You're so right bssh and well done on your loss!!

I'm going to weigh every Friday because I think it'll be the most forgiving day, though I reckon it all works itself out. I've just weighed and I'm 9lbs down!!! Keeping in mind though I have a lot to lose, but still, I'm over the moon and more determined than over to keep going!

rubbishfamily333 · 15/11/2013 09:05

Bssh - well done Grin Grin

Toffee - I am thinking similar to you about weighing myself!

Well today I was 10.3.8 GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin I haven't seen 10.3 on the scales for a good few months do I'm happy!

BUT after my last two fasts last week I was down to 10.5.6 then by Monday I was up to 10.7.4 even though I stuck to my tdee all weekend HmmHmm

So I know I shouldn't weigh everyday but I do, what I want to know is which days does everyone else weigh and record?

rubbishfamily333 · 15/11/2013 09:06

Cupid - how long have you been on 5:2? 9lbs is great Grin

xCupidStuntx · 15/11/2013 09:08

Only since Monday rubbish, I'm completely Shock but I do have loads to lose and I know it's probably lots of water but I'm just so so happy!!

rubbishfamily333 · 15/11/2013 09:08

Also I had my plain scone with galaxy chocolate spread this morning, scone was lovely but the galaxy chocolate spread tasted of pure sugar, I could hardly taste the chocolate and hazelnut in it. I'm not sure if its just that my taste buds are changing but I don't think it will be a regular thing for me.

What to have on my scones now though? I don't like jam!

rubbishfamily333 · 15/11/2013 09:10

Cupid - ShockShockShock that's amazing! It may be mostly water but even so it gives you a massive boost! Amazing

PoshPaula · 15/11/2013 09:11

rubbish I weigh once a week, the morning after my second fast day (when I'm likely to be at my lightest). I know I gain a bit back over the weekend but it makes me feel better and after all, the scales can't lie can they...

rubbishfamily333 · 15/11/2013 09:14

Posh - I feel like if I do that I am deluding myself Grin this morning I weighed 10.3.8 I had a glass of water then got on the scales again and I was 10.4.4?? That's how quickly I can put on weight Hmm

BsshBossh · 15/11/2013 09:24

rubbish I prefer weighing just once a week - same time: first thing on a Friday morning (after second FD), naked, post-toilet. I've done several sneaky post-weekend and mid-week weigh-ins and am always heavier than the Friday weigh-in so I don't stress about the wild fluctuations. It's the overall downward trend that matters.

Good losses rubbish and Cupid.

annie San Fransisco is on my wish list of places to visit. I can't wait to go. Enjoy! Even if you put on weight it won't be fat, it'll be water and undigested food etc which will easily and quickly come off when you return home - so don't worry about it.

toffee so glad your DD is on the mend.

rubbish I like cream cheese and butter on my warm scones. Often, if the scone is nice enough - just plain melted butter. Yum.

Am at my desk working now but will break around 11 to go to the gym then have my planned brunch at a cafe of black pudding (the good quality stuff as it's a naice cafe), eggs and toast. Tomorrow MIL is looking after DD all day so DH and I will head into central London for a day out: galleries, shopping (I need new jumpers for the sleeker me) and burgers at a fantastic place called Meat Market in Covent Garden.

Happy eating NFDers and happy FDs for those fasting today.

BsshBossh · 15/11/2013 09:27

rubbish but it's not fat weight, just water, clothes etc. I wouldn't think about it too much.

PoshPaula · 15/11/2013 09:30

rubbish I take my watch off, I practically take my earrings out before weighing(!) I'm past caring about deluding myself....!!

However as Bssh says it's the overall downward trend that matters so as long as you weigh regularly (and maybe not too often) that should be a true record.

rubbishfamily333 · 15/11/2013 09:38

Ok I may start also weighing on Fridays although I find it hard not to jump on the scales!!

Maybe I should only record on Fridays Wink

BsshBossh · 15/11/2013 09:47

rubbish I store my scales under the cupboard in my DD's room. Out of sight, out of mind. If I kept it out in the bathroom I'd be hopping on it all the time :)

Not2bObvious · 15/11/2013 10:15

Another week of maintenance (well I'm calling it maintenance, .5 up from last week but v constipated Blush)
It's been a bad week for proper fasts, not feeling well yesterday so that threw me off, came in under 1000 but since my Monday fast ended up as a binge then maintenance is all I deserve and I'll take with both hands!
Going to have a good read through of thread later for laughs and inspiration - just can't keep up! Happy Friday all

rubbishfamily333 · 15/11/2013 10:53

I am thinking I would like to do two fasts and one mini fast. I would like to do three fasts but I don't work Wednesdays and could bear two on a row!

Maybe Monday Thursday fast and Tuesday or Sunday mini fast? No idea if it would work

NotAsTired · 15/11/2013 10:56

Gosh, this thread is moving fast. If I don't read it for a day, I have so much to catch up on, it stresses me out. Confused

Two unsuccessful fd days but there has finally been a downward move on the scale this week. One lb but I'll take that. Smile

My work is so erratic at the moment that I can't find the right day to fast. I usually fast Mondays and Thursdays but I had work on Monday (and I can't go through a whole day without eating when I work) that it completely threw me. I tried Tuesday but it just did not happen. I tried yesterday but a lack of sleep and stressful day meant that I ended up eating over my TDEE.

Work is going to continue to be erratic so I need to plan a bit better, I guess.

lermontova · 15/11/2013 10:59

rubbish I weigh every day too, although I don't get too worked up about fluctuations. It helps keep me motivated when I get on the scales every morning though.

BigChoc can I ask please, where do you get these 12 cal cans of beef consommé? on FDs I'm trying to eat as few calories as possible to compensate for the kettle chips and wine weekends and this would definitely help!

BetsyBell · 15/11/2013 11:19

No change on the scales since last friday for me and I'm still not back to my pre-holiday weight but I do look thinner! Still NNNing on weekdays and have decided that I will continue this on until Christmas if I have to (quite like it actually Grin). Am now feeling quite belligerent about this lack of poundage loss and I will damn well win!! You hear that scales? You will not best me...

No naughties doesn't count on a Friday as I'm going out for dinner and fizz and Sunday is looking to be a treat day too. Saturday will be homemade curries day: tandoori chicken thighs with aubergine, chickpea & spinach curry and I discovered I could make naan bread recently so there'll be some of that too. Ooh yum yum yum.

Weekend = sorted.

Right, must make my packed lunch and get to work. Happy Friday everyone :)

MelanieCheeks · 15/11/2013 11:23

toffee that just goes to show how unreliable scales are!

Still around 133 this morning, but my FDs weren't brilliant this week. Yesterday's was sabotaged by birthday scones in the office, and was really scuppered when I came home from dancing at 10.30, DH requested cheesy crackers, and then had the nerve to raise his eyebrows at me when I had one as well! Pah.

toffeesponge · 15/11/2013 12:00

DRUM ROLL!!!!!!!!

DD does not have glandular fever!! Hurray! She has eaten loads and is coming back from MIL after tea Have missed her so much.

I bought M&S chocolate cheesecake for my treat.

I am wondering about only weighing once a month but isn't that just more weight going on without me realising it if I mess up? I'm thinking the sooner I know it is on the quicker I can get it off and the least there is to burn off.

In other news ToffeeBoyCat fell off the bed.

toffeesponge · 15/11/2013 12:03

I hope you told your DH to get his own cheesey crackers, MC!

NotAsTired · 15/11/2013 12:09

betsy do you have the naan bread recipe?

MrsFlorrick · 15/11/2013 12:17

Afternoon all.

Just to top it all off, we all got diarrhoea yesterday evening. Confused

What a fun night that was.

We've not eaten any of the same stuff and it tailed off again quickly so I am assuming virus. Must have picked it up Tuesday evening when I went out to stock up before DH left. Argh.

DH has changed his flights and is coming home. Not for me but because his afternoon meeting was cancelled. Angry He still won't be home until 9 tonight. But still. At least I can palm him off with DC first thing tomorrow morning.

I may end up having a mini fast due to feeling crappy. But I don't intend to actually fast until Sunday. And next week will be a week of strictness.

Am going to hunt out some soup recipes and make some.

MrsFlorrick · 15/11/2013 12:21

Toffee Grin. Excellent. Glad she is on the mend.

Re weighing. I weigh daily as well. It helps me stay on straight and narrow most of the time. And I can see a pattern to how much and which type of food causes the most gains. Unsurprisingly carby sugary junk food Hmm and wine. Still it's useful to see the evidence so clearly.
