The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Bigchoc - are you saying you have only had 70 cals all day ShockShockShockShock

rubbishfamily333 · 14/11/2013 20:55

Toffee - sounds like you have defiantly done a fd! Well done Wink

Cake tomorrow is a great idea Grin. Yummy

toffeesponge · 14/11/2013 20:55

Thank goodness!

I can not wait to eat tomorrow!

Talkinpeace · 14/11/2013 20:58

Toffee deffo a fast. BUT One of TiP's tips : have a whole pint of water just before you go to sleep as then you'll sleep better and wake up feeling refreshed rather than ravenous.
Could you get those spiral dog stake things and separate your children out across the garden on elasticated leads .... Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 20:58

Tip You are very sensible, but I don't do moderation !
The USA has gone insane about food (and sadly, much else). We are still copying them.

Thread-mates
Since I'll be alone, I plan SWATH = Same Weight After The Holidays
I'll weigh myself on 12th Dec before my shower, then same time on 2 Jan.
I did 16:8 continuously between my spring 5:2 and October, so I'll do that, plus my standard FDs.
Hopefully the Christmas frenzies will be moderate (and I'll cut down on broccoli to compensate)

eatriskier · 14/11/2013 21:00

toffee definitely an Fd I reckon. Especially under those though circunstances. Well done

BsshBossh · 14/11/2013 21:02

Well done toffee. Enjoy your cake tomorrow :)

CoffeeOne · 14/11/2013 21:07

cuckoo Wine Thanks

FD for me tomorrow. Work is my biggest challenge because people in my office are such feeders! I don't have a problem sticking to things at home, it's when people are waving cake in my face going go onnnn go on go on! Argh! If it doesn't work I'll just have to do double FD on Monday's and Tuesday's.

toffeesponge · 14/11/2013 21:13

Words will be had again with ds1 tomorrow.

Definitely getting nice cake as I have realised where I need to go in the morning is near M&S...Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 21:13

Tip I love the idea of Toffee's little monsters staked out on dog lead thingies
Grin
Also, thanks for reminder to have a big drink now.

Rubbish Damn, it was 81 cals total, when I added it all up:

  • 2 x tins of 12-cal beef consomme ( drunk via a straw from can, no washing up!)
  • small glass veg juice, 17 cal
  • 1 mug of organic defatted cocoa, made with water, splash of almond milk, 40 cals

However, one of the spinning gang has a calorie calc strapped to his chest, which generally says 1000 cals for our HIIT spin. Even scaling down to my weight, that is a fair amount. Also I turn the resistance up higher and sprint faster than he does ! So, with my 10 mins trampoline and chin-ups I should have a good deficit today.
Smile

BsshBossh · 14/11/2013 21:25

BigChoc you are one super-charged, high-octane woman - in exercise, in eating Grin. I am always a little exhausted reading your posts (but in a good way!).

Talkinpeace · 14/11/2013 22:28

Coffeeone
A tactic when plates of food are being passed around at work ....
how well did THAT colleague wash their hands before touching the plate of biscuits
mean but it works

xCupidStuntx · 14/11/2013 22:32

cuckoo I could have written your post back in July when I split with DP, exactly the same thing, he would have just continued on for years and years because I think he's somewhat muted in the emotions department. I was and still am more sad for DD but we're like the best of friends now and usually do something all together at the weekends. You'll be absolutely fine!!

Well my second fast day is done woo hoo!!!
I found it a little harder today, I just made a pot of soup (4 bowls) and had that which equals almost 500cals despite being only veg! I think next time I'll stick to a bit more protein until I'm more used to them. Feeling really really positive though!

CoffeeOne · 14/11/2013 22:34

Talkinpeace I will have to remember that one!!

CoffeeOne · 14/11/2013 22:35

Well done on your second fast day cupid

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 22:48

Tip Good point about hand hygiene and shared goodies at work.

I notice in the ladies loo, the occasional person in a hurry who does not wash her hands, even after a dump . They don't wear t-shirts stating "E-coli 4 U".

Also hardly anyone washes hands after blowing their nose. Enjoy your cake with 2nd-hand snot ?

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 22:56

I've just been watching the Horizon program (for the 1st time). They stress the benefits of fasting to reduce protein levels, or IGF1 to be more exact. This recommendation is also in several scientific papers I have read about fasting.

Protein makes a fast easier, but should those who can do so, be aiming for a zero-cal or a plant-only fast, to maximise health benefits ?

rubbishfamily333 · 14/11/2013 23:14

Well fast day is now over! Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow Wink

Night all, well done to the fasters today! Ps I love this thread! You are all so inspiring ThanksThanksThanks

BsshBossh · 14/11/2013 23:29

Well done Cupid. I always find the second fast of the week harder than the first. I think, in my case, it's because there are three NFDs before the Monday fast (and after a weekend of enjoyable overeating!) compared with the two sub-TDEE NFDs before the Thursday fast.

annielewis · 15/11/2013 04:52

Hi everyone, am amazed at how fast this thread is moving! Am struggling to keep up with you all!

I am sorry so many people seem to be having such a hard time at the moment! Hugs to you all and we'll done for not falling into old bad food habits too! A NSV....

I am in the US on holiday and cannot understand how there are so many tiny skinny girls everywhere when the portion sizes are so huge and everyone seems to eat all the bloody time! I am going to really struggle to fit in a FD, only been here for 24 hours, but we are here visiting family and there are already so many lunch/dinner arrangements being made already so I am desperately asking all you seasoned 5:2 ers how I can manage to rein in the damage.

I reckon I can easily get away with skipping breakfast so if I just have lunch and dinner does that count as a 16:8 and will I still lose weight? I just hit my first half a stone the morning I left home and wil really cry if I put it back on whilst I am here - especially this close to Christmas etc.

Please help me oh wise ones!!!

BsshBossh · 15/11/2013 07:00

1 lb down this morning :)

BsshBossh · 15/11/2013 07:03

annie skip breakfasts and try to avoid snacks when out and about. Just be mindful of portion sizes: you can eat anything you want but you don't have to finish everything on your plate. Share desserts with others. Enjoy your holiday! Where in the States are you?

Southeastdweller · 15/11/2013 07:13

Hi annie. In addition to the wise words from Bssh I advise eating low-carb when you can, hard in America I realise. Could you fit in some walking or runs whilst there?

We'll done Bssh.

annielewis · 15/11/2013 07:46

bssh I'm in San Francisco. Not as bad as some places food wise and lots of great hills for exercise but hard with 2 small kids. Am trying to still monitor intake on mfp purely to keep an eye on things. Was very good today and had grilled chicken salad and asked for dressing on the side. Am also watching what I drink as don't want to rack up cals on fluids.

No scales which is unnerving, I'm here for 2weeks and know from past experience how much weight I can gain in that time! Have done 6lb on a five day trip to NY before! Blush

toffeesponge · 15/11/2013 08:07

Morning all Smile

Well dopne Bssh.

I may be classed as slightly ott about washing hands after and before doing certain things but I am rarely ill so I will carry on.

A question now. I weighed myself twice today as I didn't like the first amount and the second was almost a pound less Confused. I am not so good I can loose weight in 3 seconds having done nothing more than step on and off some scales. Obviously I am claiming the lower amount but am a deluding myself?

In other news, DD's temp is normal and ToffeeGirlCat definitely knows her name and ToffeeBoyCat understands sit down but not come here when he would rather chill out under my car HmmGrin.
