Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 30 - Did half term bingeing make you feel dirty? Then hop on board thread number 30!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Cuckoo We have a lot in common ! ^^

I was a rootless forces brat too. Sadly all my immediate family have died and we lost touch with the more distant ones during all the childhood moves. My close friends are also several hours journey away.

Never mind ^^, I enjoy my own company and I have a confortable income, which makes life easier.
Although I work full-time, I manage to do a lot of bookworming (I can read 6 books strainght in a day), gym (well you know I'm a mad bunny), Big Choc / Junk Frenzies (the whole thread knows my shameful habits !).
I don't do moderation in my vices, but 5:2 is helping. Maybe eventually I can change to ModeratelyBigChocFrenzy.
Hmm
Sorry to hear you are breaking up with your DP, so tough for you with a DC. But you are tough enough to take whatever life throws up over you. ^^

Re constipation: Weightlifters may suffer various ailments, but constipation ain't one of 'em, so I've never had that. I hesitate to say lift heavy weights, because you need to keep CLENCHing.
Probably a nice long walk would get things flowing moving again.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 14:28

Cuckoo Why not make lemon juice from lemons ? I'm not exactly swamped with invitations over Christmas, just a couple of parties well before, so I am planning to keep my FD pattern over the holiday, including my Thursday FD on Boxing Day.
(that might be difficult for you with a DC)

Christmas Day will involve an ice cream and donut feast (don't like mince pies, fruit cake etc) during a multi-hour Kindle orgy.

But, my aim is NO Xmas gain !! ^^
This thread are all witnesses !

(puts on Gloria Gaynor - I will survive)

Thanks BigChoc tbh you lot are the first people I have told. Felt good to finally say it.

It's all very amicable and I'm unbelievably happy about that. It's the old we love each other, just not in love. It's all so calm and matter of fact. We get on great but we each have our own reasons I guess.

Dp is emotionless zombie, whereas I feel with every fibre of my being. I had to confront matters as I was so miserable and had been trying for yrs to make things work. He has admitted he could've gone on for years like we are because it suits his life (career) and he is an ostrich when comes to dealing with anything. He would've carried on even though we are not a 'couple', just housemates.

I can't live like that though. I need to be loved, and to feel loved. Been through too much shit in life to write myself off at this age.

It is absolutely breaking my heart though from dd point of view. We're not telling her until he moves out which will be early next yr. I always believed we were going to grow old together, so it is taking some getting used to, to untangle all of my future with dp in head. I am devastated for dd though. I can't bear knowing what this will do to her. I hate living this lie day in day out. I would rather just get on with it, than fear the unknown.

Anyway, I'm ok. So far. Grin
Just taking one day at time and focusing on positives in life.

(Turns off Gloria Gaynor, walks away in dignified manner to the freezer)

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 14/11/2013 15:05

......and NO!!! ... I am not giving up my turkey, gammon, pigs in blankets, sausagemeat stuffing, roasties, parsnips, SPROUTS, bread sauce etcetera etcetera for anything!!!!
Grin

Fd here and there. Maybe. Otherwise it's just smaller portions for me! Would rather increase exercise and starve for Jan!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 14/11/2013 15:06

Good luck with yours though. But I can't help thinking there will be some extra festive frenzies going on X

rubbishfamily333 · 14/11/2013 15:19

Hi everyone Grin

Well today is a fast day! I want to eat as I'm freezing cold! My office doesn't have central heating only electric heaters so although the heater is under my desk I am freezing as the air never gets warm Confused

I haven't been majorly hungry but really fancy eating Hmm

I'm going to buy sugar free diluted juice to have hot black current as I don't drink tea or coffee and wish I did

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 14/11/2013 15:22

ChocolatePudding Hello!! (waving)

Always great to have another voice on the threads. Good for you on resolution, resolution!

That 10lbs is history!!! Grin I've been lucky so far that I'm still at heavier end of my gain, but can imagine it must be really hard when you get that close and it all slows down.

Christmas deadline is a great motivator though! Best of luck with it all!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 14/11/2013 15:31

Rubbish do you think you could fashion a jacket out of one of those electric throws?? Hmm

Take extra layers in for cold days. Or wear under depending on dress code. You could wrap yourself up Michelin man style under clothes, then go back after Xmas minus said layers and ...'Ta daaaaaa! Check me out!' when everyone else has gained!

BetsyBell · 14/11/2013 16:14

Big hugs cuckoo. 2014 is going to be an amazing year for you I think - sloughing off the old fat (ie DP!) the lovely cuckoo emerging butterfly like. DD will be fine in the long run - plenty of us came from a background of split parents and I think most would say we'd rather have 2 happy parents in separate places that 2 miserable ones together.

cuckoo you sound amazingly courageous, to have made that decision, and I for one, salute you Grin

chocolatepudding welcome! Come in, have a cuppa and tell us how your days are going Smile

FD for me here today, though just caved and had a few mouthfuls of tuna / sweetcorn / mayo that I'd just made for DS's jacket potato. Oh well!

looking forward to tomorrow, Sat and Sun (NFDs) already Grin

BetsyBell · 14/11/2013 16:18

Hello chocolatepudding I'm glad you've de-lurked! I would never have maintained without this lovely lot to keep me going. It's good for focus and sympathy :)

......and NO!!! ... I am not giving up my turkey, gammon, pigs in blankets, sausagemeat stuffing, roasties, parsnips, SPROUTS, bread sauce etcetera etcetera for anything!!!!

^^ THIS totally agree with that cuckoo, bit of a punishing list on a fast day though, i almost chomped my screen in desperation!

I'm fine actually - seems like an easy fast day today. Hooray Grin

Flowers cuckoo BrewWine(calorie free of course).

You are amazing.

BsshBossh · 14/11/2013 18:06

Hello kiwi and chocolatepudding!
cuckoo I salute you! Your energy and attitude alone will see you through.

duckyfuzz · 14/11/2013 19:05

I'll salute you too cuckoo, you sound amazing!
on 400 calls so far

rubbishfamily333 · 14/11/2013 19:17

Cuckoo - I'm not sure if I could wear an electric blanket but I would love to Grin

Also I agree that two happy parents living separate is by far better then being unhappy together! Although as a single parent I often feel lonely and I think that was part of my comfort eating! But no more in 2014 I should be slimmer than I have been for years Grin

rubbishfamily333 · 14/11/2013 19:21

So today I have had:

protein shake
Pork and priprika casserole with veg which was the yummiest thing ever!
Coke zero
Hot Ribena light Wink

And I went shopping and bought some way too yummy things! Tomorrow for breakfast I am having plain scones with wait for it...

Galaxy chocolate spread which I have just discovered ShockShockShock sounds dangerously yummy to me Hmm it will probably soon be banned from my home Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 20:17

Rubbish You are living dangerously with that Galaxy spread.
Shock
Speaking as someone who has made too many dives into the nut butter jar and stayed there: do NOT eat it out of the jar !

Dangerous Chocolate Alert
My holiday resolution is now at serious risk from Hotel Chocolat.

Cuckoo They do chocolate dips with sticks to dip in and yummies to sprinkle on top . For those of us living out in the far reaches beyond civilisation, one can also order online

Grin

BsshBossh · 14/11/2013 20:23

Woohoo, second FD of the week successfully completed. I've eaten a crayfish & mango salad, an apple and some blueberries. Three NFDs now. I fancy brunch tomorrow at a local cafe: a black pudding stack with scrambled eggs and buttered toast. Can't wait!

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 20:31

They also do a pnut and chocolate spread which is so delicious on a toasted bagel

Apologies to other FDers You may have guessed my FD is nearly finished. Only 70 cals. Also, 70 mins fasted training: HIIT spin and a few chin-ups and trampoline.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 20:36

Cuckoo You are doing the very best you can for your DD given the situation. You are obviously a super Mum and she is lucky to have you.
So sorry for your heart-ache, but this will pass.

Concentrate on the new slim, aerodynamic Cuckoo, who will fly supersonic in 2014 !

FASTING OVER THE CHRISTMAS SEASON
I started 5:2 over a year ago and hit my target at the end of the Christmas term 2012. I then went to New York for two weeks over Christmas and New Year.
The city that never sleeps because its eating the whole darned time.
A normal deli sandwich : www.parisifamilydeli.com/files/2012/11/280px-Hoagie_Hero_Sub_Sandwich.jpg
A normal eat out breakfast : s3-media1.ak.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/atP0EMtzVsVWDhwgxkqyqA/l.jpg
A snack : www.thestylebox.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Cream-cheese-and-lox-bagel-from-Ess-A-Bagel-new-York.jpg
And we were eating out almost every meal because Manhattanites do not cook.
So, we stuck to two meals a day, one as a snack and one normal one.
I "only" put on 7lb - which was actually a miracle as my only exercise in that time was walking everywhere.

THE PLAN FOR THIS YEAR
16:8 every other day - ie skip breakfast every other day.
Menu planning - miss out a couple of meals.
Do not buy all the nibbles and snacks that one normally does - bowls of dried fruit and nuts if needs be.
BUT
accept that you will put on weight. And enjoy yourselves.

At the start of 2013 I shifted the whole 7lb in three weeks - because it was not 'laid down fat', it was undigested food and fluid.

Enjoy the winter break. You've all earned it - even those just starting out.

toffeesponge · 14/11/2013 20:42

Please will someone tell me I have done a FD!

1 hovis biscuit at 2pm.
chicken casserole type thingy for dinner.

That's it.

Tomorrow I plan cake.

DD still poorly.
DS1 being a PITA.
DS2 has a horrible brother who slapped him Angry and has been upset by horrible child at school today.

Yep, definitely Cake tomorrow.

duckyfuzz · 14/11/2013 20:51

Oops nuts and wine Blush

Tip that sounds like a good plan for Christmas

duckyfuzz · 14/11/2013 20:52

Toffee you have earned cake after such a good FD!

rubbishfamily333 · 14/11/2013 20:53

Bigchoc - if I go completely nuts with the chocolate spread ill throw it away (never normally would) but I am keen to stay on the right track!
