The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hmmmm nutella porridge sounds good too. We don't tend to have chocolate spreads in the house though.

BsshBossh · 13/11/2013 21:15

Well, a craving for greens won out tonight and I ended up dining on veggie sausages with stir-fried courgettes with spinach, garlic and balsamic vinegar. Very yummy. More like a FD rather than a NFD meal but just what I needed. Small bowl of HD macadamia nut ice cream for afters though :)

FD tomorrow - bring it on! Packed day planned: work, getting hair done, gym, visit from mum.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 13/11/2013 21:15

Well I am not a breakfast person usually. But tmw I will be dining on p butter and nutella swirled porridge! Sounds heavenly and I bet a little goes a long way too, so that should kick my cravings into touch. Might be closer to lunchtime, but will use a tiny tsp and savour every last drop of it! (grrrrrrrrrrrrrowwwwl goes my stomach)

duckyfuzz · 13/11/2013 21:28

OMG I've been out working all day (followed by a lovely NFD meal with a couple of friends) and I'll need about an hour just to catch up with you lot! Anyway, despite meal out and a glass or two of wine am just about within TDEE having saved up all my calories for the evening. FD tomorrow...

duckyfuzz · 13/11/2013 21:59

Ok I've skimmed through, you are all amazing and my inspiration, even if I don't post much I am still trying to keep up!

MrsF it sounds like an impossible situation at the moment for you, sorry that you're feeling unappreciated and unsupported. At times like that I turn to food/booze so you are doing well to stick to a cheese feast!

There's some deviant sounding porridge going on around here!

Bssh size 8! You superstar!

MrsFlorrick · 13/11/2013 22:48

Ducky. Thanks

Wine would be irresponsible as I am alone with DC Wink

I have been such a whiny whinger today. Blush

In the words of Jillian Michaels I need to dig deep and get on with it.

I chose to have DC. I chose to ditch my career to do so. I chose to marry a man with a stellar career. So my bed and I need to lie in it

Part of the issue is that we have old parents or family abroad so I am it in terms of children full stop. It can be hard.

As for what I am going to do work wise. Well I will just have to keep thinking. It will no doubt come to me.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/11/2013 22:58

Wrigglebum
What an excellent idea to have a professional wardrobe consultation. Very organised of you. You have definitely earned those lovely new 8-12 clothes.

Betsy
^^
Maybe you are like me with NNN: substituting some other satisfyingly high cal item, such as cheese or nuts, or loads of buckwheat groats / pasta etc, so little net deficit.
However, NNN is healthier than junk and also I think I am learning to reduce the size of my Frenzies.
It is not pointless losing weight before Christmas. Yes, we'll probably all gain holiday weight (except Bssh and probably Tip) but on top of a lower base weight than we would otherwise have.

MrsF
I don't eat yoghurt, creme fraiche etc except as a garnish on a tagine or curry, say. Otherwise, I find them boring, too low cal probably !
I eat nut butters on sprouted bread, often with banana & cinammon.
Sometimes I add it to a whey protein shake with banana.
I am trying to stop my shameful habit of eating directly from the jar and finishing it (1600-1800 cals)
Blush

Talkinpeace · 13/11/2013 23:01

MrsFlorrick
I'm with you on the no drinking when alone.
My grandmother often was (my grandfather was a serious high flier) and the rule of "no drinking while alone" is locked into the family ethos.

And child care - yup we never had family within 100 miles and the nicest one living is now 3000 miles away.

BUT the exhausting years will pass
I was told as a young mum that you catch up on your sleep when the youngest child turns five

and there will be ways that you can use your skills ( and the same applies to all other ex professional mums on this thread )
you just need to leap sideways.
Feel free to PM and I'll have a thunk ....

AND
You are getting your body and physical brain into shape now so that as the kids get older you'll be stronger than you ever realise you can be.
Tomorrow is another day.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/11/2013 23:02

Ducky Thank you for coining the phrase Deviant Porridge, two words I never expected to see together. Tickled my funny-bone.
We can now feel even more wicked eating this dish ,
Grin

BsshBossh · 13/11/2013 23:11

I have some Deviant Porridge planned for NFD Friday :)

Littlemisskiwi · 14/11/2013 01:23

Hi. I'm new. Starting 5:2 today.
I live in New Zealand and this is only just surfacing here, I heard of it from UK friends but at least the fast Diet cook book is in the library.
I enjoyed two poached eggs with some asparagus for lunch.
Dinner with the family may be a little meat with lots of veg.

Current stats
height - 5'6
weight - 70kg
BMI - 23
Size 10 - 12
Ideal BMI is 21, and a size 8-10 I guess

Quickie- Those of you doing this - have you dieted before? I've been successful on Atkins before but never done low cal type, but this appeals so much as its only low cal on two days.

Questions:
Do you need to keep your FD consistent every week or does it not matter?
Alcohol, allowed on NFD, in moderation?

Thanks.

Breadandwine · 14/11/2013 01:35

Hi LMK

Just saw your post before I'm off to bed - so some quick answers:
Vary the FDs to suit yourself - Mondays and Wednesdays or Thursdays are most popular.

Alcohol certainly is allowed - as you say, in moderation.

Check out the links in the OP - and the Tips and Links thread is a good source of info.

Good luck, you'll enjoy this WOL, I'm sure!

B&W

duckyfuzz · 14/11/2013 07:15

Morning ladies. FD here so no deviant porridge for me Grin however I do have a brand new coffee machine to play with and am working from home until 12ish so will probably be completely hyper by then!

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2013 07:15

Morning wave

Welcome, Kiwi. Do read the 5:2 info and tips at the top of this thread before you start. You'll enjoy it here, lots of people have had successful weight loss - see also the Inspiration thread.

I'm FDing. Who else ? MrsF, you said you might ?
Anyway, happy FDing to all.

duckyfuzz · 14/11/2013 07:17

Welcome littlemisskiwi Smile I vary FD depending on work or social life, I love that flexibility is part of this WOL. Good luck!

rubbishfamily333 · 14/11/2013 07:26

Fd for me again today Grin

MelanieCheeks · 14/11/2013 07:39

FD here, and I'm going to try Gok Wan's vietnamese salad for dinner (fennel, carrots in a lime dressing)

eatriskier · 14/11/2013 07:42

Mini Fd here for me today but now I want deviant porridge! Oh well.

toffeesponge · 14/11/2013 07:58

Just a quick hello as off to drop DS2 at school and take DD back to hospital.

FD for me today as I failed so spectacularly yesterday. My 2lbs I lost are back on as of yesterday and this mornings.

Boo.

Good luck to all today.

Flowers
BetsyBell · 14/11/2013 08:31

Fasting today.

I need to qualify my moan about putting on weight at Christmas (or holidays): here's the thing, the bit where I start piling on the pounds is at the point where I've ceased to enjoy it but am still eating because I've somehow lost control of the mindfulness. I simply want to eat all of the time, because it's there and that's what I do.

By thinking about it ahead of time I might be able to avoid the unpleasant bingeing bit. I managed it at Easter so maybe I can learn a lesson at Christmas.

Bigchoc I'm pretty sure I haven't been eating more of differently high calorie stuff, hence the feeling of dieting and deprivation. Yes there's been more cheese at times but I tend to reduce the size of my next meal accordingly. Anyway, I'm sure it'll all be fine, just having a whinge in advance of 3lbs suddenly dropping off! (Oh I miss those days*… Grin)

*I don't really - much prefer being slimmer and healthier.

Morning Ladies & Gents

Kiwi Hi!

  1. No it doesn't matter which days you do them. You can change from week to week to suit you.
  2. Alcohol is allowed. But must come within cals on a fd, and obv in moderation on nfd to be healthy speed up weight loss.

Nfd day so far! Just waiting for things to get moving before I weigh in. If it's a disaaaaaaaster darling I may just fd after all. Will be doing one tmw anyway for my 4:3.

Good luck losers!!

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 14/11/2013 08:49

Betsy Old habits certainly die hard. I think it would be a huge achievement to get through Christmas with enough self restraint to stop the bingeing.

I am with you on wanting that. Hate the feeling of an over stretched stomach and the lethargy that comes with it.

It would truly be corner turning stuff to pull it off.

I think we have our next challenge......

'SAVE THE STUFFING FOR THE BIRDS' or similar.

If I could get through Christmas without losing my new found ability to recognise when I've had enough, and to actually stop Grin - I would feel very proud come New Year. And hopefully not have too much of a gain as result!

Is it on.....??.....

TheLeastAccomplishedBennetGirl · 14/11/2013 08:58

Morning everyone

I can hardly keep up with all the chat, but find this thread very useful so hope it's ok to drop in and out.

FD for me today, but have woken up with a headache, good job there are no cals in paracetamol!

All this talk of christmas has me seriously thinking, I'm going to fit at least one FD in, we don't socialise too much anyway so without being a party-pooper it will be doable.

BetsyBell · 14/11/2013 09:04

I hope so cuckoo - I like eating when I'm hungry, not just because my brain is going "ooh yeah, just pop in another truffle, now some cheese and crackers…" etc etc for a week or so.

First step is attempt to have less stuff in I suppose. I think perhaps I won't make a huge Christmas cake, for example, but make sure I've got plenty of baking ingredients and mincemeat so if we want something naughty we do have to bake it first! Kids seem to be getting into cooking so I might set them on a mince pie making challenge.

I certainly won't buy a big tub of disgusting chocolates - I tend to be the only one that eats them without actually enjoying it.

I can't skimp on the nice cheese and crackers though - that is Christmas to me. But sugary stuff can certainly mostly go.

Actually, one of the main problems is the sheer number of sociable meals (big and lovely extended family) so I must try and not go for seconds/thirds when I'm at other peoples.
