Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Okay we are getting there.... am going to Pilates tonight so this should take my mind off of food. C'mon, ladies, let's do this thing!! FD two nearly over for me.....

WilsonFrickett · 13/11/2013 16:04

I'm doing great, despite labyrinthitus (sp?) hitting me today, most hated of all things. Can just about cope with staring straight ahead and touch typing, trip up to collect DS nearly made me boak Sad

BetsyBell · 13/11/2013 16:07

bigchoc fnar Grin [childish giggle]. Now bigchoc - I'm reviewing the question you asked of us last night re. sugary weekend and I see now it's all a matter of timing. In the evening and most of the day I am very much of the take it or leave it and shrug variety of person.

4pm, however, is a very different story. I WANT ALL THE SNACKS NOW! But thanks to NNN I am not eating any of those things I know I've stashed in the cupboards for the children's friday treats. And I ran out of nuts last week.

I don't know if this is a comfort to others on a plateau or not but I feel the need for a quick 5:2 related moan. NNN is not getting me off this plateau at all, seriously no difference in my weight - I thought I might at least get down to 9.10 but no, still hovering round the 10st mark like I have been since my second summer holiday.

More moaning: even if I do shift the few pounds downwards I'll only put it back on again at Christmas and be back where I started in January.

Ok, whinge over. I'll pop my cheerful Betsy persona back on in a minute. I'll persevere as I know it's all for good. Just a bit misery-making when I know I'm putting in extra effort and it's making zero difference.

Apart from my lovely flat stomach, for which I'm very very grateful, even though it's been ruined by babies!

Bssh amazing as ever! You must have felt A-maa-zing Smile. We're going to need an updated "after" photo soon you know.

How are all the hoopers out there doing btw? Not fitted any in for a few days so off to do some now Smile

wrigglebum · 13/11/2013 16:41

Mum, I think I might need to change my name to BigFudgeFrenzy Grin. There was a charity bake sale at playgroup and I had four large bits of almond fudge. Delicious but I was on the verge of feeling rather sick after! Did a big cardio workout after to minimise the damage.

eatriskier- you are a genius! I had peanut butter and Nutella in my porridge this morning, it was yummy.

What channel was that programme about regaining weight on? Quite fancy a watch of that. I am determined I will not put the weight back on. I'm going to keep weighing myself and if I put much on I'll increase my efforts. I'm a size 8-12 now, depending on the shop, after spending most of my adult life as 12-14. It's wonderful! I've discovered our local Facebook selling page so might sell on some of my bigger clothes. I'm going to have a House of Frazer style consultation type thing for Christmas to get lovely new clothes.

BetsyBell · 13/11/2013 17:00

bigchoc, cuckoo My weekend baking plans I think

MrsFlorrick · 13/11/2013 17:23

Bigchocfrenzy. Are you me Grin? I lurve nut butters. I have to take care not to over indulge.

I take it you eat almond and hazelnut butter in Greek yog? Or creme fraiche if you are very naughty or low carbing Wink

It's the bestest!!

H has phoned and is having a disgustingly good time. Angry And yes frenchfemme no rain where he is either. Had the cheek to tell me it was warm and sunny. And that he can't speak to me later as he is off to a champagne reception followed by dinner in Michelin starred seafood restaurant. AngryAngry

Dinner has been had already. I've been good so far today. Only 900 cals. And no it's not FD or even mini fast here. I am saving calories for either cheese or choc once and if I get the DC to sleep. And I intent to have about 1000 cals worth!

I am well aware that this isn't the spirit or the way forward. That said this time last year I would have snacked and had three massive meals all day and then gorged on treats when things were tough. So at least when I intend to eat bad/high cal stuff I am now building it into total intake. Besides I feel virtuous as I've had lots of veg today. Wink

I wanted to work out today but DS hasn't stopped crying the whole afternoon. He is quite unwell.

DD is being a trooper actually. Despite being itchy I've not had a word of complaint and she has been so good. She can be a super star at times.

I could work out when they go to bed but I have had three nights of DS being up for hours and I am so tired. Perhaps that's why I haven't stuffed myself with junk. I've gotten so tired I can't physically put my hand to my mouth. The wailing toddler diet...Hmm

Well done to all the NSV and losers. You're all forging ahead.

I will no doubt be back later Grin

rubbishfamily333 · 13/11/2013 19:05

Evening all Grin

Wigglebum - very jealous I wish I had lost enough weight to go off buying lovely clothes. I'm hopeful my time will come but I want it now.

rubbishfamily333 · 13/11/2013 19:14

So yesterday I went over tdee by about 25 cals, then after an annoying conversation with exp (dd's dad) I had two glasses of wine which took me 311 cals over tdee ConfusedConfused

Anyway today I will end up within tdee! I'm finding that my normal size portions are leaving me feeling stuffed Shock normally I like this feeling but I don't seem to want to feel stuffed right now! But I'm finding that I don't seem to be able to give out correct size portions for myself, I hope this will change with time.

Also I'm finding that I don't know what I want to eat a lot of the time, as I don't want to waste calories I'm being quite fussy about what i eat. Not fussy as in it must be super healthy, just fussy as in it must taste good and not like cardboard. Has anyone else been like this?

BsshBossh · 13/11/2013 19:57

rubbish yes I'm definitely more fussy, I'm always thinking Is this worth eating? Food has to taste nice, not artificial. This change in tastebuds is helping me cut out the crap well, most of the time at least.

wriggle the diet programme was on Channel 5 so should be on Demand. It was a rubbish documentary though - very voyeuristic with no actual suggestions on how to overcome yo-yoing weight. I was quite cross watching it but then reminded myself that is is Channel 5.

Betsy keep going, remember my 4 month stall, patience, blah blah (you're a pro, you know the drill!). Incidentally, have you increased your exercise regime - could it be your body adjusting to that?

DH isn't coming home until very late. We'd planned venison ragu and pasta leftovers for dinner but now he's eating at work I don't fancy that at all. What I fancy is... a big bowl of Haagen Dazs macadamia nut ice cream Grin.

wrigglebum · 13/11/2013 19:59

Rubbish- you will get your time. Just don't spend too much at the start- I've got a few lovely pairs of jeans I bought and then got too small for. Some are going to friends, some will get sold I think. At least Next, Primark and New Look jeans are cheap. I very nearly got some £85 Levi's before- what a waste that would have been! I need to sell some swimwear on eBay too- lovely Freya stuff that I didn't get much wear from but would probably fall down now.

And yes, I have become a lot more discerning about food. There's no pressure just to eat anything you can get your hands on because you know a little hunger won't hurt and you can wait for something you want.

MrsFlorrick · 13/11/2013 20:00

Both the chicken poxy DC are asleep! What a result. The power of calpol is not to be under estimated.
Grin

I am being bad and having my feast. I chose cheese over chocolate. I love cheese.

Am going to be completely ridiculous and attempt a full FD tomorrow. Grin What utter madness. With two sick DC at home and a kitchen stuffed a
Full of goodies (for sick DC obv).

If I manage that, it's hard core. Let see how it pans out.

I like a challenge. Grin

MrsFlorrick · 13/11/2013 20:03

Bssh. Yes that sounds like a sterling idea! Grin

BsshBossh · 13/11/2013 20:07

MrsF, loads of Thursday fasters tomorrow so keep logging in here and we'll keep you going!

toffeesponge · 13/11/2013 20:14

Thank you BigChoc. That really helps Smile. Best thing is, I know I must have eaten more than 500 so is a normal eating day, but I am not hating myself for it. I was upset 2lbs have gone on when I weighed this morning so do need to do another FD but I also know all is not lost.

I'll be spending tomorrow morning at least in hospital and then out and about so should be really easy not to eat until dinner in the evening. Anyone know calories for chicken casserole in the slow cooker with chicken thighs.

rubbishfamily333 · 13/11/2013 20:15

Bssh - that's how I feel like I don't want artificial food! Although I do still really fancy cake, if I'm eating cake but within my tdee will I still loose weight?

I have seen others talking about baking, I have started to feel like I want to bake too Shock I hardly ever bake, but atleast then I could make a yummy banana cake and know exactly what is in it and how many calories.

rubbishfamily333 · 13/11/2013 20:17

Wrigglebum - that's exactly how I feel
Like I can wait, feels very odd but I'm glad about it Wink

But today I was walking around morrisons looking for something to eat and feeling confused as I couldn't decide what i wanted as I was being fussy. And a member of staff asked me if I was ok, so I know I must have been looking completely lost ConfusedConfused

BsshBossh · 13/11/2013 20:25

rubbish I've lost all my weight continuing to eat cake, chocolate and ice cream. Last year, when I was losing 3 of my 5.5 stones I ate ice cream every night (just a normal portion though). It was good quality ice cream though Wink. I only started baking this year, since doing 5:2 and experiencing that wanting better quality thing.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 13/11/2013 20:26

Rubbish I totally get the fussy taste buds. It actually annoys heck out of me sometimes because when I really, really want something, and I am allowed to have it, I cannot for life of me decide what to have! I know it must be helping on some level, but tbh I'm worried now I'm more likely to grab any old crap so I don't have to think about it!

Lesson here I think is..... Go out and treat self to absolute favourite/ indulgent/quality items for such occasions, and hope to buggery the self control doesn't wear off!

Bloody hell! Nutella in porridge with the peanut butter.... Who said that (looks around for person responsible for zero weight loss for next year!)...

I am planning a baking frenzy for weekend. Didn't actually get any done last week. Current ideas are making a red onion, rosemary and sundried tom foccacia, homemade pizzas sat eve, and for sweet on sunday maybe devils food cake, or self saucing choc (or lemon) pudding, or fancy a big slab of bake well tart. Really stodgy fare as can see! But taste buds in overdrive at mo as it's fd! Grin

I have def struggled today with NNN. But Betsy! Read back what you said....who doesn't put weight on over Christmas! You are expecting it, you are also still trying to shift more before then, and afterwards whatever you have gained will surely have been as a result of enjoying yourself. And because you do 5:2.... that wont be a problem. Will it missus!!!!!!

(resumes trying to bleach eyeballs to remove image of thigh and bottom stretching)

rubbishfamily333 · 13/11/2013 20:32

Cuckoo - I am also finding it EUR annoying Grin

Also I'm not even going to try Nutella in porridge, Nutella is extremely addictive to me and I can eat a jar a day if its available Confused

It's banned from my house right now

BsshBossh · 13/11/2013 20:33

who doesn't put weight on over Christmas?... Errr, me actually. Well, last Christmas only. It was Christmas 2012 that my long stall broke and I lost 2 lbs and continued to lose thereafter. September to December 2012 - stuck in and around 168 lbs; after Christmas week was suddenly 166 lbs; then continued to keep losing all through 2013. Very strange.

CuckooAtchooUhOh · 13/11/2013 20:41

I love it when that happens! Every now and then, when least expected, the scales can (pleasantly) surprise!!

You must have thought all your Christmases had come at once Bsshh! Grin Lovely!

I know what I would like in my stocking this year!

BetsyBell · 13/11/2013 20:49

bssh cuckoo I definitely haven't increased my exercise! I like to keep my body guessing when it comes to exercise - a sporadic approach to say the least - some weeks I'm full on but mostly it's just day to day activity (though I have an active job and lifestyle - except in the evening when I retire to my nest). Anyway, yes, I know the drill of course but felt a bit pouty today as i feel like I'm bloody dieting! I'll keep at it and see how it goes.

Slight NNN fail as the children absolutely insisted on baking and would not be deterred, so I had a small piece of marshmallow flapjack. They've been watching Junior Bakeoff and Masterchef…

But I did just turn down a gin and tonic.

Fussy taste buds - YY to that, I hate wasting calories now so no longer eat something just because it's there, I have to really want it. I think that's a massive lifestyle change victory to anyone experiencing that - it's called eating mindfully… Smile

And that's where I go wrong on holidays and at Christmas, I eat so much I never get hungry and stop eating mindfully - and hate it because food isn't as nice when you're not actually hungry is it? Am going to attempt to NOT do that at Christmas this year. I don't like feeling over-full anymore.

We'll see Grin

wrigglebum · 13/11/2013 20:50

Sorry cuckoo Blush. Eatriskier said she has peanut butter and jam in porridge so I just took it a step further. We love peanut butter and Nutella in sandwiches and on toast here. It's good for building up my skinny little boy, and luckily I have self restraint with it.
