Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi all, posted yesterday but it disappeared Hmm anyway busy busy busy so little time to stuff my face, which is good! Tues good FD, Weds and today good NFDs well within TDEE on the downside TOM imminent (in synch with bossh!)

Biscuits are you on teesside...?!

southeastdweller · 10/10/2013 21:35

So here you all are Smile

Thanking you Betsy

Had an attack of the chocolate hobnobs today on a NFD plus a few Oreos and too much bread, but never mind.

I know I'm always going on about chocolate but I'm bursting to tell everyone that the new lemon flavour Green and Blacks is utterly divine and I think it's my all-time favourite flavour they do. God I love this WOL!!!

Good luck to everyone who's fasting tomorrow.

BsshBossh · 10/10/2013 23:22

Right, on my NFD shopping list tomorrow: cake from Gail's, lemon Green & Blacks, Cuban pork soup.... and a selection of sweets (have just finished watching Nigel Slater's programme about sweeties). It's TOM time, I've been terrifically restrained all week, now it's time to indulge a bit :)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/10/2013 23:39

The lemon G&Bs is amazing. And, joy of joys, DH doesn't like it! Also I'm sure I have already mentioned it but the Lindt Intense Blueberry is amazing.

When we were in France in the summer I tried out a few different brands of chocolate that you don't see over here. There was one which was dark chocolate and raspberry, it was the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. I may have brought a bar or two home with me and scoffed it Blush

FD has gone pretty well today, I'm around 550 which I'm pleased with seeing as DS2 is still insisting on a bedtime and morning feed, and at random times throughout the night Hmm

After TIP mentioned it the other week, tomorrow for my NFD lunch I'm having a corned beef sandwich. Haven't had one for a good couple of years and I am so looking forward to it! I'm planning to have a few salt and vinegar crisps with it, it is a great combination Grin

somewherebecomingrain · 11/10/2013 06:39

Oh dear. Three slices of toast and a bagel with lashings of butter and jam for breakfast. I did not even want the bagel by the time it was ready.

It's all to play for though - if I can fast till lunch time - and I know I can - and then just gently push myself over into feeling satiated it can be rescued.

Sorry to go on but just trying to be mindful and thinking aloud on here helps so much.

BsshBossh · 11/10/2013 06:54

1.2 lbs down on a TOM week, woohoo! Now to eat cake. I love 5:2 :)

BsshBossh · 11/10/2013 06:55

Now to eat cake :)

BsshBossh · 11/10/2013 06:55

Whoop, sorry, got carried away by thought of cake Blush

lucyintheskywithdinos · 11/10/2013 07:25

I'm struggling. So tired that I'm using sugar to keep me awake. When I'm not tired I couldn't care less about sugar. DD3 keeps waking up before 5am and DD1 goes to bed late (not her fault, it's related to her sn).

Aiming to fast today and taking them out to a friend's house, then a bit of shopping, then a friend is round for dinner. I was going to run this morning, but I'm far too tired. Easier to do run 4 at the weekend anyway.

outtolunchagain · 11/10/2013 08:06

Another FD today ,very late night last night so feeling rubbish this morning but am definitely going to press on

JB30 · 11/10/2013 08:50

Down .6 of a pound - 17 pound in total, next Friday I'll be 5 months at 5:2. Haven't quite hit my mini goal but only by .2 of a pound, setting a new goal for 2 weeks time to be 11 stone even - pretty optimistic but I like to aim high Grin
Nfd started with buttery toast - yumWink

PoshPaula · 11/10/2013 09:00

I got through my FD yesterday no problems - thanks to the recommendation about the Yorkshire Provender soups, the lovely person who mentioned these on here! And this morning I've lost nearly two pounds since I started just over two weeks ago! And I feel great! It's not been too hard.

Wine tonight but that's okay because there's another FD on Monday. I do feel so much more in control of my eating with this method.

RippingYarns · 11/10/2013 09:18

DH has now joined me, he's so impressed with my progress. We both eat very well, I love cooking, but far too much.

Yesterday was fast day, and I'm still finding it really easy to keep to 500 cals.

A huge bonus of not eating meat - I'm making a lot of the same meals but leaving the fish/cheese off ;)

Thanks Downstairs, exercise is definitely needed, it's been a slow week on the exercise front. No chance between today/tomorrow but Sunday, Sunday will be the day!
Yummy cake Bssh, you earned that, enjoy every morsel. You've got me thinking about a special treat. I have a day of indulgence planned, might squeeze a cake in myselfWink
Neeko that's some acheivement, I love those victories, I remember my eldest being a baby the last time I was this weight, 9 years ago now. Losing the excess weight makes me feel years younger too! It's a figurative and literal truth when I say it's a weight off my shoulders lol!

2muchmess · 11/10/2013 09:48

hi all, need some help here. after 2 successful fasts this week i had the most horrible binge-y day yesterday. it was like i was out of control and gasping for food all day and totally went mad with chocolate and biscuits and was not able to bring myself back to normal. i think i've probably undone all the good work i did and feel really crap about myself. does anyone else have experience of this and what do you advise (apart from willpower)?

JB30 · 11/10/2013 10:06

2much what works for me is to note everything I ate, no matter how bad, in mfp. Then that's the end of it, I've confessed as such and I choose to have a better day, just a fall, not a fail. And also to lay out a plan for the next few days. So it's a bad couple of days, so what, you have the power to stop it at that. Best of luck

somewherebecomingrain · 11/10/2013 10:08

2much yes day after my first FD I ate a whole 100g bar of choc and two profiterole desserts on top of lots of savoury food. I felt like a bottomless pit - nothing made me feel full. At that stage I still lost weight though. It's only after a few months that I've felt the need to worry!

My advice is roll with it, keep fasting. Your metabolism and appetite will change quite drastically and it will be a journey

somewherebecomingrain · 11/10/2013 10:10

Ps the absolute frenzy of hunger does pass. I'm breast feeding a v hungry baby and I think that's partly why I've got it so bad. But even I am not as hungry now on nfds as I was that first week.

alwaysanauntie · 11/10/2013 10:20

2much yep, it's still a regular occurrence for me, even after 5 months of fasting... My way of dealing with it is very much like jb30's in that i think it's vital to log it all so you can really understand how those calories tot up (& I've had a few 4000-5000 days so know what I'm talking about!).

The other important thing is to not beat yourself up about it, as it can become a vicious circle of eat-guilt-eat. Try to see it as a learning opportunity to identify the triggers that made you want to eat so you can tackle these head on next time. Other thing is to have a drink next time you want to grab the biscuits, i find 10 mins relaxing with a nice cup of tea often means the urge passes.

Keep going, you will get there :)

lermontova · 11/10/2013 10:25

Hello,

This my third attempt at 5:2 and to be honest this is the first time I have not got trapped in a fast/binge cycle. Even with logging everything in mfp I seem to have had a compulsion to test it by eating as much as humanly possible on non fast days just to see what is the most I can eat without actually putting on weight. It turns out that this is quite a lot since I do a fair bit of exercise, but I'm trying to lose 20 pounds so am now reining it in and telling myself that I can have a maintaining week in mid-November if I stick to it properly until then.

It's week two of not eating like a total beast and I've lost 6 pounds to go from 146 to 140 (altho this is the weigh-in on the day post fast so who knows what tomorrow will be!) so this is helping me stay motivated. I don't find fasting all that hard, especially on work days when I'm busy all day and not home until late, but at weekends the temptation is a killer.

NotAsTired · 11/10/2013 10:34

Well done all the losers. Smile

Only fasted on Tuesday this week, lasted 24 hours before I ate 500 calories. I actually managed to do 20:4 on Wednesday and 18:6 yesterday. So quite pleased with myself.

One of the by products of this woe is that I feel sick and ill if I am mindful of how much I am eating (and have been actually sick once Blush). I know Bssh has similar side effects (although obviously not thrown up like me). Does anyone else? I feel a bit sick this morning after eating my usual portion of porridge. It's not like I have over eaten. 40g of porridge is all. Have lunch with a friend. Feel sick just thinking about it (she's coming to mine so it will be a bit rude if I don't eat). Sad

But on a happier note, I've lost another lb. Also, my size 10 clothes are starting to hang loose on me. Smile

NotAsTired · 11/10/2013 10:37

if I am not* mindful

BetsyBell · 11/10/2013 10:47

Notastired Yes to feeling sick - especially if I eat too many carbs after a fast day but just if I over-do it generally now. I don't enjoy that over-full feeling at all and I guess I get there much more quickly these days. Mainly I remember to not make a total pig of myself so am fine, but it does still happen occasionally.

I have learnt that I can't eat takeaways at all now. Sad

lermontova Hello! Thanks for joining us and it sounds like you're having great successes this time round. I guess you don't get the over-eating vom feeling then if you managed to binge regularly on NFDs? I guess I should be grateful I do Shock Grin

I did feel sick on my whole cake day recently. Really horribly sck. Just for a moment. It was a three day old salad rather than the cake that did it.
