Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 28 - Come and join us! The threads may be getting on a bit but the new starters keep us young and fresh!

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason these threads started!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

This is a bit naughty and off-topic of me, but I need some help.

I know there are quite a few teachers on here. If you can give me some advice in response to this, I would be really grateful. I might be interviewing on Friday and I already feel like I'm going to fail. (Pessimism born of repeated beating of self-esteem in current job).

Thanks Smile Flowers

Happy birthday Melanie I've just got back from my first run in 3 months, I was really proud of my 3.5km, but you put me to shame with your 8 miles (mind you are 10 years older than me so you've had 10 years more practice right Wink )

Talkinpeace · 12/10/2013 17:16

Happy birthday melanie multiple scale and non scale victories.

eatriskier · 12/10/2013 17:59

Happy birthday melanie

somewhere irrational is one of the nicer things to say about her attitude sometimes Wink

Well I starved myself until 1530 this afternoon. Purely by accident. However I did have a lovely KFC as an emergency need to eat or I'll kill everyone in this shopping centre intervention.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 12/10/2013 19:09

Having breakfast is allowed in the 5:2 woe Downstairs - you need to do whatever makes fd's doable. I have a boiled egg every fd morning plus lunch plus dinner because I am an absolute bitch otherwise! Also, I would just give up as it would seem too much like hard work. Having said that, I am not keen on alcohol so I don't have the burden of saving 100 calories for a glass of wine with dinner :)

My point is, you don't have to go without breakfast, you just have to find what works for you. It's the total number of calories that count.

MissStrawberry · 12/10/2013 19:15

Helloooooooooooo

I will read all the thread but won't comment as I am tired have had a big week and just drunk two glasses of fizzy stuff

Missed you all.

Have put on 3lbs but after the week I have had that is irrelevant. Will fast properly on Mon and another day but for tonight I will enjoy my dinner (M&S and was soooooooo nice) and the fizzy stuff.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/10/2013 19:39

MissS I hope you're ok.

Happy Birthday Melanie! What a brilliant advert for this WOE Grin

Lovely day today. Didn't go out for lunch in the end, doing that tomorrow instead. I had cold salmon leftover from last night with sunflower seed bread and tomatoes. Mmmmm.
Just enjoying a glass or two of the red stuff Wine

MissStrawberry · 12/10/2013 19:58

I am Grin

Really tough few years but now I have achieved something bigger than anything else so really happy. Honestly if I could work out my password and NC I would post all about it but I can't.

Thanks for your wishesFlowers.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 12/10/2013 20:00

Thanks for all the stories and experiences of telling other people about this WOE.

Happy birthday Melanie

I've eaten far too much today, I'm so stuffed and uncomfortable. Don't think I'll eat a lot tomorrow. I was stuffed after my first breakfast in months, it was only one slice of toast!!!!!! Don't think ill do that again. It's been a while since I've eaten this much. We were out buying winter coats and stayed out for tea. I ordered steak and it was much bigger than I anticipated.

Wish I had time for running or any exercise for that matter. I've promised myself in summer when the evenings and mornings are lighter I will run more than the weekly Parkruns.

Talkinpeace · 12/10/2013 20:06

MissStrawb
So, so pleased that 5:2 and these threads have helped you find that place in your head that makes you feel good.

I posted on a different thread to a lady who binges, that its all about the mind. The stomach, body and appetite will follow where the mind leads.
Once your brain is in a place to understand why you eat, what you eat and when not to eat, all else falls into place
AND
that level of control spills over into the rest of your life - mindfulness is fantastic stuff

MissStrawberry · 12/10/2013 20:38

Having you all to help me has been immense. I can't explain how amazing you are. I am no longer scared of food and don't feel a failure if I do eat something that I don't really need.

Food is great but it shouldn't have the power lots of us give it.

I have also achieved something else this week and I just can't find how to explain it all yet.

mttum · 12/10/2013 21:49

Hi everyone, just checking in after a long absence. Breakup of relationship with girlfriend, not nice but ther we are I'm not the only one and most importantly have dd to look after.

Relationship problems obviously good for weight loss... Down to below 13 st for first time since I was in my 20's! (56 now, and 6 ft male). Have been more or less 5:2ing but not obsessive about it, so happy to have found this woe and this thread. Thank you so much everyone, even though I haven't posted I've been reading the thread and think of you as friends or at least partners along the way.

Bit of wine speaking, bit the sentiments are true, thank you Flowers

Talkinpeace · 12/10/2013 21:59

Happy birthday melanie and I loved reading that post earlier.

Welcome back mttum.

Mini-fasted today and kitchen closed at 6pm. I'm so looking forward to my Lindt hazelnut chocolate tomorrow Smile

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 12/10/2013 23:02

Downstairs I always had granola and yoghurt for breakfast before starting this woe but I found my portion size gradually increased each day. Much easier to keep track of one egg!!

Breadandwine · 13/10/2013 01:30

Hi mttum, nice to see you're still around.

You need a manhug, I reckon! [hug]

And another (small) glass of Wine!

Cheers!

Totally agree with you about the(se) thread(s)!

That last is only cocoa-fuelled, I'm afraid! Grin

BsshBossh · 13/10/2013 07:55

Happy birthday Melanie Thanks.
Welcome back mttum and big hug to you.
MissS your posts are really inspiring. I remember your eary posts and it's clear you've come a long way. What a journey eh? :)

Well, I am so glad I've undereaten this week cause my NFD weekend has been gloriously gluttonous Grin. Looking forward to tomorrow's cleansing FD though.

Eating without guilt - gotta love that!

NSVS here as I just spotted my knees have changed shape! I'm never going to have shapely knees but they're less blobby than they were.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 13/10/2013 09:11

Downstairs absolutely! I have been shocked about how much I was overeating by and completely unknowingly. Ok, not completely but it is surprising how small a portion of many foods is. I weigh and log everything - hopefully, in time, I'll have reprogrammed myself enough that I won't need to.

I felt as though I had been a right pig yesterday, but have just realised that actually it's because I ate three meals, when I usually eat two.

Today, NFD. Bike ride planned for later on, I'm going to plank and do some yoga in a minute when I have finished my coffee!

I am genuinely amazed by how 5:2 has sort of re-set my attitude to food. I've been bulimic, been treated for it when I became dangerously underweight, been five stone overweight, settled for a long time at three stone overweight...but now...just a stone to go. More importantly, I'm not stressed about it, I feel really well and healthy, which has inspired me to get back into running and cycling.

I'm planning to go out dancing for my 30th. I love dancing, but haven't been confident enough to feel like doing it in public for years!

zombiesheep · 13/10/2013 09:34

Hi everyone fast day today! Weighed myself and I'm the same weight as last week! Which is good and yesterday pigged out loads at a Mexican restaurant! Good luck today's fasters :)

zombiesheep · 13/10/2013 09:35

good because
