Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 26 - Bring on the Lifestyle Change Victories!

BetsyBell · 24/08/2013 11:15

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Wrigglebum. Grin I know I know.

I must be more patient.

You've just given me an excuse to shred less Wink

I shred while I fast so every morning. Doing 16/8 so that's easy.

I don't know if its burning fat faster. I do hope so.

The reason I am impatient now is this. I have lost almost 5 stone since having my last DC two years ago. I have one last measely stone to go to be back at pre preg weight and BMI of 21. Sigh.

It just feel like I am almost there but still so far away as I still can't wear my old clothes.

As my Oldest DC is 4, you can see that it's actually almost 5 years since I wore "normal" clothes. And I am so utterly fed up with being fat. I hate that whenever I need to go to the GP, every ailment is because I am over weight etc. argh.

To be clear all my excess weight is around my tummy. So the rest of me is a size 12 but my tummy is a size 18/20. Not only bad for health but it looks an absolute state too. And it makes me feel Sad.

So yes I am stamping my feet.

Hi all

Thanks for the new thread.

So, after being delighted last week with a mid week day after fast day weigh in of 13.13, I was expecting to bounce up by the official Monday weigh in.

Strange but true - between Friday am and Monday am, after 3 NFD's........Drum roll please.........13.11 Grin

I am not sure what happened there as it has never happened before. I always have the scales in exactly the same place, weigh naked after the toilet and before my wake up cuppa.....

The only thing I can put it down to is that DP put a lb on this week, perhaps I gave him one of mine Wink

Oh the joys of being apple shaped mrsf. I must say well done for shredding and 16:8 daily. Seems harder than 5:2 and the occasional stab at pilates which is all I do. Maybe you need to think a little more long term, as in where you will be in 3 months and 6 months. I'm sure you will look completely different. And feel it too. When does your little boy start school?

Yay cartman safely into the 13s.

I should be ironing really, just putting it off. Just under 3 hrs til fast ends. I like to do an extra 18 hrs after my 500 tea last night.

well for the first time on this diet since May I feel a little fed up. I lost a stone in 10 weeks which was fab. Then I went on hols for two weeks and put on half of that stone. Went straight back on it nearly three weeks weeks ago and have just got back to what I was. Now I know I should not be fed up but I have really cut back on NFD's to under TDEE and upped the exercise by biking with my gorgeous new Pendleton bike so expected to lost a little quicker. Anyway if anyone fancies kicking some arse mine is available.

Wow, go cartman!

MrsF, I can completely see why you are getting impatient now. You've done so well already to lose all that weight, I'd want the last bits off too. I do recommend you try a couple of proper fast days, if you can manage 16:8 you can do it! Just make sure you do veg and protein on fast days and no white carbs. I do wonder if every day on 16:8 means you're not actually eating enough and your body is desperately hanging onto that last bit.

I am an apple shape too and have a bigger tummy than I'd like, I'd love to have the weight go on my hips and boobs instead of tummy, arms and face.

Hi all, weight loss is steady and getting used to fasting. 9lbs down and can't wait for the first stone. Found out that it's likely to be December before my op so if I can get down to 12.5 stone I'll be overweight rather than obese. 1.5 stone to go then....

Thank you.i had a bit of wobble after an encounter with a which of a practise nurse at my GPs surgery. She asked me how my diet was and whether I do much exercise- all in the most patronising and condescending tone. She was about 17 years old and the size of a twig. Nearly burst into tears, and felt myself getting very red. If she'd read my medical notes she would see that doing exercise would probably involve me wetting myself- I miss swimming and cycling Hmm. Anyway, onwards and downwards. I do wish medical staff would think before they speak.

Hey macca have you considered some sort of watersport where a wetsuit is required? Peeing in your wetsuit keeps you warm Blush

Appoligies in advance if I've overstepped the line! (twas my first thought when I read your post)

Report
yecartmannew · 27/08/2013 14:28

Sorry forgot to mention, its only OK when its your own wetsuit, peeing in a hired suit is just plain bad manners!

It's an idea, though I do live 3 hours from the sea! Btw, that should have read 'witch'. I blame fast day brain cells Grin. Don't worry about overstepping the mark- I tell all and sundry about my crappy pelvic floor- hence operation in December!

Nice to see how you all support each other.
I was on a lovely thread once and the people there really inspired me. After a few weeks people were telling me I looked healthier and I myself felt better for it.
I would have 2 toast in yhe morning, salad with either chicken or low fat tuna mayo thing from tesco and would have the same tea as everyone is.
I think my calorie intake has been pretty high so yhe first few pounds should be easy if I eat sensibly and that should keep me motivated.

Well done for those who have done well!!

Well, having had nearly two weeks en la belle France eating three meals a day and drinking every evening I'm feeling pretty flabby
BUT
I'm still in my skinny jeans (just) and will restart fasting next week as I have to be at killer fit size by mid September.

Welcome all new starters, well done to all those who are getting there on their targets and to those who are stuck at a size, stay with it as the health benefits long outlast the weight changes.

Sorry to be rude and only answer peplum's question. Not stopped all day and shattered. Cat was bitten by GirlCat and she is definitely in the dog house as she has broken the cat flap now. He is okay though it loos sore. Been a real trooper though as he isn't allowed outside to play yet. Saturday he slept all night in our room and we didn't hear a peep. Sunday night he woke up at 2am and at 3.30am we put him downstairs as he would not stop yowling, scratching and trying to get in a bag!

Not doing well at all. Fast day yesterday but had celery and some tzatziki for lunch then I must have had more than 500 calories for dinner as it was so yummy. Had to have an emergency pudding too as feel a bit out of it but had also had to dash and get DD from PIL as she had been stung by a wasp Shock.

Today I had 2 bits of toast with the tzatziki on. No lunch as busy and not hungry. Had half a M&S egg mayo sandwich and 3 home made chips and a piece of wensleydale cheese while cooking for the kids. Do I give up on trying again for a FD and try tomorrow??

I have managed to fast all day with the dcs and feeling rotten. This has mainly been coz they've both been rotten too and have either slept concurrently or I've only really had to deal with them one at a time. Even got a sleep in myself.

Looking forward to dinner tonight very much. And am desperately avoiding the gorgeous but calorie laden cake that is sitting on the table.

Had an enormous cream cake (slice of) today. Do I feel good? No, I do not. I feel sick, bloated and lethargic. One of these days, I am going to learn that just because its there, I don't have to eat it. So kudos to you eatriskier for avoiding the cake. Smile

I'm not sure what others would say, eatriskier but if you are unwell, maybe try a proper fast later in the week? I know that if I was feeling rotten, I would not even contemplate a fast.
