Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 26 - Bring on the Lifestyle Change Victories!

BetsyBell · 24/08/2013 11:15

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

That transcript was interesting HopefulGum thank you for posting it.

Suffering today after blowout yesterday - sugar is much worse than alcohol. Doesn't help that I was repeatedly woken by the barking of my neighbour's dogs.

Well done trying. So that's just over 2.5 stones - it took me six months to lose that!

Sympathies HellesBelles - I have a similar problem with neighbours dogs. Impossible to ever have a lie-in here.

Is anyone else fasting tomorrow?

Thanks SED - to be fair, I think I'm feeling too sorry for myself!

I will be fasting wed and fri this week. Too tired today and at the cinema tomorrow.

Hi everybody. I just started a 4:3 fast last week. After three fasting days, I have lost 1 (+a little more) kilos and I can already see the change on my chin. (I had put on a lot of water a few days before I think).

I just wanted to say hi, since I've been following these threads for a while now. How is your fasting going?

Peplum

Little cereal boxes are great ! My rock bottom comfort food is rice krispies ( I know they're rubbish ). Trouble with a big box is it's too tempting to keep dipping in so I have two single portion boxes in the cupboard for emergencies now and hardly ever use them.

Dotty glad you had a good time with us here in glorious West Wales. I doubt our paths crossed as I don't go near the beach in school holidays preferring it almost to myself on windy autumn days.

Welcome to loads of new people

Flowers for Eatriskier I love anagrams but will resist puzzling on your names !

Hi clari - welcome. That's an excellent start. It feels good when your face starts changing, doesn't it :)

And welcome isitme a couple of 5:2ers on here are also bfing and I am sure they will be along shortlisted to advise. Over the course of a week, you would reduce your calory intake by about 3000, but all in two days. The key, I would imagine, for you woyld be to ensure you get enough fat and iron to enrich your milk which means making sure you eat a well-balanced diet on nfd's.

Thanks. So far ive not been dieting. I'm just eating what I want but sensibly. Have got an special event middle of October so any weight loss would be great.
Dc is also formula fed top ups as my milk wasnt enough to begin with due to anemia but is better now I hope!
X Thanks for the reply x

peplum I am based in Indonesia where they have the most wonderfully deep fried fish, chicken, ribs, etc. Also, amazing range of exotic rich soups cooked with amazing mix of tropical herbs and spices. Here in East Java, people take lots of sweet foods and the range of desserts is amazing. Interesting combinations like avocado with coffee freeze, black glutinous rice and green beans cooked together and served with sweet and slightly salted rich coconut milk. All great and calorific foods. Tomorrow is first fasting day in over a month. Wish me luck!

Fasting today and finding it hard, lying on couch after getting home from work - kids seriously getting on my nerves, just being their normal selves but tired/hungry me hasn't got it in me to deal with them! Oven on to cook dinner so I'll eat in less than 30 mins, I can hang on in there a bit longer. Wearing my size 12's today with proper buttons closed and can still just about breathe so that's a sign of a good weekend - well good behaviour weekend Grin
Dinner will bring me to 500, however I will be nudging closer to 600 I reckon as I know I need more than dinner, wee square or 2 of dark choc essential!

Hi mehefin, thought you must be Welsh with that name. My dh is from Anglesey. I would prefer a quiet windswept beach in Autumn to hot packed one! I feel as though I belong on the coast really.

Although right now I wish I was in Indonesia! With glutinous rice and salty coconut milk, thinkcan. Faints.
I'm sure your body is ready to fast, although I'm glad mine is nearly done. Boring canned soup flopped over steamed veg. Yay.

I'm fasting tomorrow too, seeing as today was a bank holiday - I'm back at work and am anticipating a day of pure busy-ness so it should be pretty easy to not eat till teatime!

Catch up with any other Tuesday fasters tomorrow Smile

Hiya just got to tell you about my holiday weight curve.

Was so pleased with progress and really worried about holiday weight gain.

Dp wouldn't countenance me fasting and I went on a slippery slope to absolutely gorging myself. Cream teas every day (yes, we were in Cornwall) plus ice cream and butter-loaded toast and snacks and three course evening meals out. Occasionally I managed to eat just a salad for dinner or just fish but not in a denying myself way, in a 'my body is begging me not to eat too much' kind of way.

Anyway, the holiday ends, we get home and it is evening - it looks like I've gained half a stone. Oh well, to be expected.

Next morning though,, it's only a quarter of a stone. I plan to only eat in a six hour window that day and although my dp ruins it by bringing in a pot of Eden project chocolate buttons late at night, I still eat a lot less.

This morning I was within a pound of where I'd been before leaving for the holiday.

Extraordinary.

Fasted today and feel alright - looking forwards to my biscuit tomorrow!

Same here somewhere horrified when i got on the scales (though it was late yesterday with wet hair and towel on my head). Fasted today so going for another weigh in the morning and putting it behind me! (The pasties, cream teas and fish and chips were worth it though)

I think most of us are realising that any holiday damage is fairly painlessly removed within a few days of being back to normal routines - another great perk of this WOE!
Much as I love the freedom of the summer holidays (when I'm not trying to juggle the kids AND work!), in some ways I can't wait for them to get back to school so that I can return to normal fasting / exercising routines Smile to see if I can shift a few more pounds before that certain December based event

Have you measured, MrsFlorrick? How are your clothes fitting? Are you more toned? Do you feel fitter?

Report
MrsFlorrick · 27/08/2013 08:45

Helles. Not measured. I will try on my tight/just too small clothes today and see.

Don't know about feeling fitter. Every day shredding makes you quite sore for the first half of the 30 days.

All the best to those fasting today Grin.

wrigglebum · 27/08/2013 08:50

MrsFlorrick- I agree you should go by how you feel and how clothes fit rather than the scales. I've been on a weight plateau for nearly 4 weeks now but I think my body shape has changed more in those 4 weeks than it did in the previous 4 when I lost half a stone. I've been shredding too (though did have a bit of a break with visitors and going away) and it is definitely toning me up.

FD tonight- planning some rather yummy chicken ramen tonight for dinner, yum!

Wrigglebum. Thanks Smile

I am feeling impatient. I keep eyeing up my old wardrobe of clothes that I am desperate to wear. And the scales keep telling me I am too fat.

Shredding a bit later again.
Off to try on some clothes.

This is shredding. You'll feel like you're going to die but it will change your body shape. Jillian is a bloody genius, you only need 20 minutes, some hand weights and a small patch of Lego free carpet in front of the television. I'm only doing it 3-4 times a week rather than 5-6 like a lot of other people and I'm seeing real changes. I'm starting to actually like my body and feel more confident.

MrsFlorrick- make sure you have some rest days from shredding too to allow your body to recover and build those muscles. I find I don't get better results if I exercise too much iyswim. Also, are you shredding on an empty stomach? That will really help burn that fat. I think we've all been sold the idea that there can be quick weightloss options, but remember that slower weightloss is more sustainable. This should be a change of lifestyle rather than a quick fix.

Shredding will help build lean muscle mass which will increase your resting metabolism, so it might take a while for the scales to shift in your favour but hopefully they will soon.
