The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

TIP please post a photo of yourself in the dress when it arrives :)

BsshBossh · 18/09/2013 09:29

Dotty fab loss!

I physically can't binge/overeat these days - I get a painful, bloated stomach that sends me to my bed. It's taken me 19 months of losing weight (5 stones and counting) to get to this non-binging stage. My stomach has physically shrunk.

eatriskier · 18/09/2013 09:34

Go dotty! plateau definitely over.

bssh I've not been going as long as you but I'm noticing that with myself. We had a roast last night and you could see plate when I portioned mine out and I ate it and was stuffed in a nice way. Was saying to DH that my plate would have been piled high to overflowing and I'd eat till I was nearly bursting. Was actually more satisfied last night with a roast than I'd been before.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 18/09/2013 10:20

Weigh in today - 2.6lbs off! Grin

NotAsTired · 18/09/2013 10:38

Well done, Alibaba and dotty, both really good losses.

bssh and eatriskier my tummy has definitely shrunk but my eyes and mind have not caught up yet with my shrunken tummy. I still overeat when out for a meal and then feel ill, like you bssh. I am ok at home, though. Lucky that I don't go out very often!

Dotty342kids · 18/09/2013 10:53

Thanks folks, am just chuffed to have finally moved in a downwards direction agan. Am beginning to wonder if 10st might be achievable Smile. Though then I'll definitely need some new clothes!!

Dotty342kids · 18/09/2013 10:56

Ooh, and I did go and get back on scales. Twice! One reading of 10st 4 and one of 10st 5lbs so even if I go with the higher one, that's still 2lbs off since last week which is brilliant!
Drumroll please................................
and it takes me into the healthy BMI range Grin
Sooo pleased! Just need to stay within it now.

eatriskier · 18/09/2013 11:04

Wow - this hula hooping malarky is hard! Found a weighted one on my travels randomly on Monday so thought I'd join the ranks. Am already beginning to spend more time hooping than reseting and my god my abs hurt. Definitely better than sit ups though I reckon.

eatriskier · 18/09/2013 11:05

Yay again dotty

Dotty342kids · 18/09/2013 11:23

ooh eatriskier when I get paid next week I'm buying one for sure! Can't wait!

somewherebecomingrain · 18/09/2013 12:21

Brilliant dotty!

I'm plateauing at a tiny bit above healthy bmi so will take inspiration.

I weigh myself constantly I'm afraid - this morning was about a quarter of a pound under 11 an a half stone. I am happy to go slow buy would like to properly keep losing.

tip love the dress too - those 'sunbeams' from the waist are incredibly glamorous and flattering.

My ds starts school tomorrow so hope to start shredding soon.

Ditto re bloat after big eat. Last night after dinner I had a barley risotto - 75g of barley so not huge, a tiny bit of leftover potato and four squares of chocolate. I felt really uncomfortable!

Xx

Itsaboatjack · 18/09/2013 13:04

Yay, well done Dotty that's brilliant.

Boo for me though I stupidly ended up having a bit of a binge last night. So stupid.

Dotty342kids · 18/09/2013 13:04

somewhere you'll get there, I'm sure! I'd like to lose another 3-4lbs ideally so that I'm safely in the healthy zone and have a bit of leeway Smile

BsshBossh · 18/09/2013 13:13

Alibabaandthe40nappies fantastic loss!

Dotty so how many lbs to go to target? You must be very close now.

Dotty342kids · 18/09/2013 13:22

Well I've never really had a target as such other than into healthy BMI range which I now am. So am just going to continue as I am and see what happens really but I suppose a part of me would really love to see 10st, dead on, rather than 10st something!

Talkinpeace · 18/09/2013 13:26

Dotty
my "target" was to be light enough that my knees stopped hurting when I walked ....

Yup, I'll post up a picture of me at the party - will stick with my blue shoes but I have a plan - next week some time

eatriskier · 18/09/2013 13:28

ali sorry, I missed your post first time. Brilliant loss!

Am I the only person who prefers it when winter comes around? Food wise that is. I'm making a pie for dinner tonight (and friday night!). I love warming, chunky food. Summer is all hot and I feel so limited in my general diet.

MissStrawberry · 18/09/2013 13:44

Just a quick hello as behind today.

FD today, trying to do 3 this week but about to have my first ever miso soup to keep me going until dinner later.

Felt fat last night. Probably because I had macaroni cheese and 3 choc chip cookies Hmm.

wrigglebum · 18/09/2013 13:44

Glad to hear it's a good workout eatriskier, I haven't got one yet as I haven't been anywhere near an Argos but I'm looking forward to it. I'm just using the little children's one for now which is really hard to keep going. It is brilliant when you get a good run going on it.

Some wonderful losses going on. I'm down to 9st9 now so very comfortably in the 9s. It's strange how it goes in fits and starts. I had quick initial losses- 8lb in 4 weeks, then stalled for 4 weeks, now about 6lbs in just over 3 weeks.

My targets keep moving. Initially, before 5:2, I wanted to get to 10 1/2st (I'd gone to 11st3, just creeping into 'overweight' for the first time in my life). I got to 10st9lb in eight weeks by cutting out fizzy drinks and cutting down on chocolate. Then I stalled, and 5:2 intrigued me so I gave it a go, thinking 10st would be my target as that was my 'slim' pre pregnancy weight. I got down to 10st1 in a month then stalled, so just kept going to see what I could manage. Next target is 9 1/2st, then I think I'll switch to maintenance (one FD a week, add in extras if I creep up again).

I think the shredding is helping too, it's certainly toning me up. I'm onto L3 now and actually enjoying it. I'll post some pics when I'm done!

BsshBossh · 18/09/2013 13:59

Dotty my target was originally to hit BMI 24 which, from BMI 36's vantage point, sounded like an impossible dream. When I hit it I maintained there for several months as I loved that I was finally a healthy weight. But then it dawned on me that I could look even better and after TIP linked to the WHO report on BMIs for Asians I realised I could lose more weight. This time round I'm in no hurry to drop a further stone. Like you, I'll just continue losing and see what happens.

BsshBossh · 18/09/2013 14:00

wrigglebum nothing like a moving target to keep us on our toes :)

Dotty342kids · 18/09/2013 14:07

You've done so well BsshBossh, it really is amazing how much you've lost. I think actually, that toning up all the very, very wobbly bits might be a target but that might mean changing the exercise routine which I have (and love!) so not sure about that.
Definitely going to give hula hooping a go though as I'm an apple shape so carry all my weight around my middle which, as we all know, is the worst place from a health point of view. Will see where hula hooping gets me Grin

BsshBossh · 18/09/2013 14:36

The quickest way I've found that has toned me up, leaned me out and given me visible muscle definition is weight training with progressively heavier weights. Much more than cardio (running, swimming etc) - even though I love cardio too. If you have access to a local leisure centre or other gym then I highly recommend it for quick toning results.

Dotty342kids · 18/09/2013 14:55

I knew you'd say that BssBossh Grin. Hmm, will think about it Smile

BsshBossh · 18/09/2013 15:21

LOL I am so predictable Grin. Mind you, if you'd told me last year that this year I'd be evangelising about weight lifting I'd have laughed at your face! My how people change :)
