BetsyBell · 24/08/2013 11:15

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Just checking in. Really good FD yesterday, even though I was feeling a bit under the weather. And I weighed in at 11.8 this morning, so that's three pounds down. I'm sure it was only as good as that as it was my first proper week back on 5:2 after holiday etc. am thrilled to bits and super motivated for the coming week.

It's so helpful having this thread to come into. I really feel like part of a team!

angelabbie · 17/09/2013 15:40

hello all, I have become very disheartened about this WOL and need a little you can do it talk if you can. I initially lost 12lb which I was very pleased with but since mid July I have put on and lost the same 3kg time and time again. I seem to put the weight on very quickly if I have a big weekend of eating or am away for a few days and equally lose it within a week or two but am just not getting any further down. I eat within TDEE every day and am sticking to good healthy food so am at a loss as to what is stopping me going any further. I am 5ft 5 weight 1 1st 6 and am average in activity. My TDEE is 1700. Any advice very welcome thank you all.
x

Dotty342kids · 17/09/2013 15:56

Hi there angelabbie. All I can say is stick at it! I started at 11st 7 and was down to 10st 7 by end of June. And that's where I'd been stuck until about 5 days ago! I do think that the idea that we easily lose around 10% of our weight and then get "stuck" has some credence as it seems to happen quite often.
For me, it was getting back into normal, term time based exercise routine (not that I completely stopped over the summer...) last week that was the only thing I can pin it down to.
Others on here have had similarly frustrating plateaux and we're none of us too sure what causes the loss to start again, but please be reassured that it will!
If you want to shake things around try any of the following:
Eat more than you TDEE for a few days, followed by a fast day to "surprise" your system.
Change your type of exercise eg. from none to some, or from cardio to weights. Again, it's about jolting your body into action.
Change the types of food you're eating eg. get more cals from protein and less from carbs for example

I really feel for you but please do keep on with 5:2, it will get going again I promise Smile

BetsyBell · 17/09/2013 16:39

Angelabbie You're maintaining. This is a good thing.

Ask yourself: If you weren't doing this WOE would you have put that 12lb back on by now? Keep at it and you'll find, eventually the weight will start coming off again, especially if you mix things up a bit like Dotty says.

Now summer is over are you likely to have fewer big weekends or weekends away? That might help too...

You people who've managed to kick the snacking habit: I'm hugely impressed! I think I managed a brief period at some point where I didn't snack but a holiday really put paid to that. I think I'm getting back there but it's taking a while. Last week I did 3 fast days as my eating was constant on the other days. This week I need to just curb it. Evenings are fine at least, mornings are better so far. After-school still not so great.

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 17/09/2013 16:51

Part of my snacking problems are due, in part, to eating small meals. If I have breakfast it's usually fruit and yogurt, lunch is likely a small salad, so by 4pm I'm really hungry- eating tends to be things like malt loaf, dried fruits & nuts at that time. If I overdo the 4pm eating (if I start on cheese and crackers) then I reduce my evening meal accordingly.

The thing is I really like eating small meals (lifestyle victory... certainly wasn't always the case) and if I up-size them I get hungrier.

I don't know what the answer is really. I know it would be better to eat less often every day but I will console myself with knowing that I rarely eat after 6.30pm so do give my digestion a decent break each day.

Change to the cutting booze plan here. DD has played up all day. My only saving grace has been the fact she and DS napped at the same time. DS has refused to take a second nap and is now over tired. I have a bad head and can smell my roast cooking so am starving! Wine definitely needed.

So new plan. Booze allowed on Tuesdays and Fridays. Optional Saturday or Sunday (can only have one of those).

Talkinpeace · 17/09/2013 18:29

Well my dress came for my party at the weekend.
Its a size 10 - but all the other ones from the same shop that fitted me were size 8 - so I shall pretend its a size 8.
www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/phase-eightSunray-Pleat-Dress/202245257
Now to find the right cardie / shrug so my arms do not freeze

  • shoes are three inch heel navy blue patent courts - ideas?

Because 5:2 WORKS

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 17/09/2013 18:33

TIP that dress is deadly!

eatriskier · 17/09/2013 18:37

Tip that dress is stunning. No practical help I'm afraid

NotAsTired · 17/09/2013 18:58

Love, love, love that dress, tip.

No ideas here about what to wear with it, maybe post on style & beauty?

angelabbie · 17/09/2013 19:42

Thanks betsey and dotty, I will keep at it i guess. I was ready to give up but your kind words have changed my mind. I had a baby two years ago at the age of 45 and then went on anti depressants for post natal which have the wicked side effect of weight gain so I have never managed to get back to a pre baby weight. It would be such a boost to get to 10 and half stone but I will be happy with maintaining for now.

xx

Talkinpeace · 17/09/2013 19:54

angelabbie
Hang on in there. PIlls often have many side effects weight wise so you need to reset whole chunks of your system, as well as try to lose weight.
Not gining is good (better than many, many people)
see how long you can do fasts for - to try to reset your endocrine system a bit in case that helps

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/09/2013 20:35

TIP that dress is fantastic.

If the shoes are navy I would think you might need to have a navy shrug as well - black wouldn't look right I don't think.

Something like this?

Anything with too much material is going to detract from the shape of the dress - and you!

Had dinner, a lovely 490 calories. Small chicken breast wrapped in a little bacon with some cheese sprinkled. Fries (waitrose from the chiller cabinet, 249 cals for half a box) and broccoli with salad.

Brings me to about 600 for the day, which is under my 700 (because of BF) target. Happy happy.

Weigh in day tomorrow!

Talkinpeace · 17/09/2013 20:37

alibaba THANKYOU - that might just be the answer :-)

BetsyBell · 17/09/2013 21:47

WOW to dress TiP Love it!

You will get there angelabbie x

Breadandwine · 17/09/2013 21:59

I'll echo that WOW!

MelanieCheeks · 17/09/2013 22:42

Fab dress, I'd go for a navy pashmina.

JB30 · 17/09/2013 22:43

Oh TIP, that dress is stunning! Well may you wear it as my Mum would say.
Shockingly rubbish FD yesterday, ended in a binge of around 1300 cals, so still well under tdee but shocking for FD. However through a busy day and distraction today ended up about 650 so I reckon I'm back on track. Honestly, I don't know what posesses me sometimes, I think it's a bit of self sabotage. I get to the region of around 11.7 and start moving/munching my way back up. Need to re-read the Beck solution and this time do the exercises!
Did the shred today, day 3, getting a smidge easier. Off to bed, bit hungry but shall resist! Night all x

Talkinpeace · 17/09/2013 22:46

JB30
Do a hand written food diary for a few days : write everything on it BEFORE you put it in your mouth .... Grin

Melanie Thing is the party is buffet and canapes and I'd probably just dip a pashmina into the tray!

It is fun being the same clothes size as the model used, even though I'm probably double her age Wink So, so worth all the fast days!

whimsicalname · 18/09/2013 00:27

Well, I got through my first FD yesterday, without eating or maiming any of my children. I had planned to eat all together when my husband got home from work, but he got caught up so I had to feed 4 kiddos, then get a baby and a toddler to bed before I got to eat my supper. I was fine, although a little chilly, after that, but gosh the late afternoon dragged.

Then I was up twice in the night with a complete change of clothes and bed for the baby and a toddler with a nightmare who wouldn't stop screaming. I was ready for breakfast I tell you, but I've definitely eaten less and more mindfully today. I'm looking forward to it getting easier.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 18/09/2013 01:31

Wow TIP at amazing dress! A non scale triumphant victorious victory of victories!

Well done whimsicalname it gets easier if you stick at it. :)

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 18/09/2013 01:33

Just a thought on dress - could you wear nude shoes and then you could get a cream shrug? Navy can be so hard to match....

JB30 · 18/09/2013 07:20

Thanks for the suggestion TIP- I do confess v truthfully to mfp, every last embarrassing morsel and I generally pre-plan quite well, but the days I don't - it ain't pretty. I have to say I might just go back to 2 meals on fd's as I reckon in just too hungry by tea time, my last couple of binges were on the days I attempted a 24 hour fast. Still learning, many years of bad habits to unlearn.
I see where you're TnD, nude heels would set off that dress lovely TIP, then a delicate wrap in a neutral/pale gold maybe. Still drooling over that dress! I want

postmanpatscat · 18/09/2013 07:42

TIP love the dress, I agree that nude/cream is the way to go!

FD for me today, need to get back in the groove and give my body a rest from a daily intake of chocolate

Dotty342kids · 18/09/2013 07:44

j830 I know exactly what you mean - I refer you to my custard cream inducing binge of Monday (which was supposed to be a fast day!). Definitely self sabotage in my case.
Anyway, managed fast day fine yesterday instead, if you don't count the several mini dairy milk chunks I ate which my husband brought back from the airport for me. Oops.
Got on scales this morning and saw 10st 4lbs! That can't be right as that'd be a 3lb drop in the space of a week, after my 3 month stall!
Going to go and get back on them in a moment Smile

tip I agree about nude shoes and wrap, might be a bit "softer" and less uniform like (navy and red always says airline crew to me). But it'll look fab on you no matter what Grin
