Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Yipeeeeeeeeeeee Grin

I saw a 13 on the scales this morning

OK now for the disclaimer.......

It was only 13st 13 but still.........
It was a midweek weigh in (I am a daily weigher but only take note of Mondays official figure)
It was the day after a fast.........

Even given all that I am strangely emotional, didn't think I would see that ever (before 5:2) and so soon (once I started 5:2 and began to believe it might be possible someday)

It will bounce up by Mondays official weigh in, but the fact that it was there means I might be firmly in the 13's soon.

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 10:26

yecartmannew Brilliant, well done :) You will be firmly in the 13s very soon and be racing down them I'm sure.

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 10:32

wrigglebum I was just thinking the same about my size 12 trousers - I'm guessing if you can pull them down without undoing zip/buttons they're probably too big right Grin

Jealous of 5 proper pushups I must say. I tried again after reading up about form and technique and failed to do any more at all! I'm setting myself a daily pushup challenge - just going to keep trying until I get there.

Apologies for the endless posting today - I'm trying to push the thread along so I can post a new one before I go on holiday again!

yecartmannew · 23/08/2013 10:38

betsy I'll help push it along if you like.

I am going on an AI 3 week holiday to Tunisia from Sept 4th.

Would like to be firmly in the 13's by then (week and a half) but don't know if I'll make it.

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 10:42

yecartmew I always make my 'official' weigh in the day after my second fast of the week - my logic behind it is that there is less food and random water retention in my system and therefore it is a truer reflection of my weight. On Monday my body is full of weekend eating and drinking so I don't want to be weighing all that.

Might help you target if do that too!

What's your weight loss so far?

yecartmannew · 23/08/2013 11:07

Betsy I did think about changing days but traditionally I always weighed on a Monday so that is automatically what I started doing on 5:2.

If I change days I will get a blip in data and I'm not sure I want to cope with that!

Weight loss so far last Monday was 20 lbs

yecartmannew · 23/08/2013 11:10

I've got a long way to go yet, my target is 11 st 7 but as long as I get there by early 2015 I'm in no hurry.

It was bloody lovely to see that 13 though when I started at the wrong side of 15 1/2 Smile

yecartmannew · 23/08/2013 11:15

I don't think I will put on vast amounts of weight on holiday

It is Tunisia so the food isn't much to right home about, especially the hotel food (the local food is quite nice) and I don't drink wine.

Normally I would drink spirits and mixers but the selection is very limited and it all tastes like paint stripper so I don't really bother much. Maybe the occasional evening but not all the time.

I would like to maintain whatever I am when I go.

(I normally loose weight when in Tunisia, but that is pre 5:2 when I was steadily putting on the rest of the year, so loosing 3 - 4 lb while away was probably a good thing)

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 11:20

20lbs is brilliant yecart - how long has that taken? It took me 18 months to shift 50lbs but I only started 5:2 15 months in and had already lost 30lbs by then. I think you're going to lose that weight pretty quickly :)

Lizzabadger · 23/08/2013 11:29

Two monthversary coming up on 27th and losing motivation.

My 3 x zero calorie fasts per week have turned into 2 x 600-700 calorie 'fasts' the past two weeks.

I've got to keep going as still another stone to lose. Not sure whether it's best to take a break and start again rejuvenated or to plod on in this half-hearted way.

Hormones not helping!

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 12:00

lizzabadger 3 zero fasts a week would not be sustainable for many people! Your 2 x fasts are normal for this WOE - ok maybe you need to try and reduce by the 100-200 extra cals but that still counts as a fast. My 2nd fast of the week usually goes over by the same amount.

Your calorie deficit is still huge over the week, assuming you're not overdoing it on NFDs of course... Wink

You're being hard on yourself and if you're hormonal then fasting is extremely hard. If you want a break, have one - less loose over the bank holiday and start again properly for the beginning of September. You will feel rejuvenated and will want to get back into it.

Get back into it with normal 5:2 though. 4:3 zero fasting is a whole different proposition. You could aim to do that occasionally, perhaps when you've overdone it hugely on NFDs or whatever, but to have that as the norm is unsustainable and makes you feel like you failed when you can't do it.

What I love about this WOE is it's flexibility and lack of feeling like a failure when things go awry.

changeforthebetter · 23/08/2013 12:04

What do you think I should do about Monday's FD?

I can't eat today - even liquid is just going through (sorry tmi) I assume I should cancel Monday and get back on track on Thursday?

Well done for all these fantastic losses btw Thanks

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 12:08

Change I would aim for doing it later in the week depending on how you feel. You'll probably find you take a week to get back up to speed, digestively speaking, so aim to get better properly, then think about fasting. Listen to your body. Flowers

Lizzabadger · 23/08/2013 12:32

Thanks BetsyBell. That sounds like very sensible advice. I'm going to enjoy some pub lunches (and lie-ins) over the weekend and then start again either next Tuesday or the week after.

Congratulations to everyone who's losing. Some amazing results.

Change I would prioritise getting better and postpone the FD.

Breadandwine · 23/08/2013 13:02

In the interests of hurrying the thread along, I thought I'd come on and tell you about the 7 biscuits and 6 pieces of chocolate I've just had! [slightlyannoyed!]

Only an hour ago I was wondering whether to have lunch or just leave it. Then I figured I would, and since then I haven't stopped eating.

I'm fairly relaxed about it, as I'm maintaining at the lower end of my weight range - 9.1-9.4 - and I know it won't figure as long as I don't continue! Grin

I'm just a bit annoyed as I really don't need all that sugar!

Breadandwine · 23/08/2013 13:08

Another way of looking at it is that sometimes it's just a question of swapping a treat Hmm now for a fast later on if needed.

I've often done that if I've had a late, unplanned, supper. Then it's just a case of doing a mini-fast either the following day or the next day. So I would think I'm eating tomorrow's breakfast and lunch the night before, IFSWIM.

Haven't done that much recently, since I instituted a No Evening Snacking (NES) rule, which is working pretty well.

Nice to see the newcomers joining in and doling out advice - it doesn't take long to get established on these threads!

Best wishes to one and all, and enjoy the rest of the summer!

Cheers, B&W

yecartmannew · 23/08/2013 13:13

Betsy it has taken 12 weeks so has been quite fast.

I am not expecting to loose at the same rate in the future, I am sure I will hit a few of the dreaded plateaus and the loss will slow down once I am not hauling such a lard arse around on a daily basis.

I re adjust my target date every few weeks, with a loss of 1/2 lb per week as the average and have calculated that when I started it would take untill September 2015, now i should reach target by February 2015.

Any sooner than that will be a bonus but I don't want to count my chickens so to speak as it will be disapointing if I don't make it

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 13:41

breadandwine I have been known to regularly have to skip dinner having had an impromptu session with cheese and crackers just before supper time. At least these days I then realise I've had a meal sized portion and stop eating. Previously I would have just had dinner as well and then felt awful.

yecart you are very sensible :) When/if you do plateau stop and take time to think about how far you've come rather than how much more to go. Puts your good work into perspective.

Lifestyle Change Victory: DH said my walking was super-speedy these days - I said 'that'll be the 3 and half stone less fat I'm hauling around with me'! I do feel like I'm floating air most of the time, I don't think I ever have that sluggish heavy feeling anymore Grin.

yecartmannew · 23/08/2013 14:01

I have thought once or twice that in order to keep loosing at the same rate, perhaps I should fill a backpack with the amount of weight lost and carry that around all the time!

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 23/08/2013 14:43

Well done Cartman! It's a great feeling, isn't it, having a whole new number at the start of your weight :-D I've been 12-13 for the past three days in a row so I think I can officially say I'm in the 12s - yay!
Indulgent family weekend coming up though, but planning I counter that with some fasting early next week. Next stop 12-and-a-half !!

postmanpatscat · 23/08/2013 14:53

cartman you're doing great! It is true that there's nothing like trying to carry the weight you've lost to make you feel grateful that it's gone.

NotAsTired · 23/08/2013 18:32

Finished fast day here. It was hard work but it's done now. Smile

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 23/08/2013 19:02

I haven't managed a fd this week but have been eating at about 75% of tdee - nor deliberately. I have eaten what I wanted. Today I ate 90% of tdee and am way too full. And yet I know I have eaten less than I would have a couple of months ago. This WOE has totally changed my food expectations.

I am just above a size 16 - fastened without discomfort but looks awful! Size 18 is too big. Belts are my friends!

MissStrawberry · 23/08/2013 19:06

It is hard to join back in to a thread when you have been away. Makes me realise how fast it goes!

Was a surprising moment today to realise that food no longer rules my life.

JB30 · 23/08/2013 19:24

Lots of scale and nsv's for a happy Friday! My scales is down roughly 1.5 pound over 2 weeks, delighted. Wore size 12's (albeit tight) for 3 days this week so pretty chuffed, gone from a snug 14 to a snug 12. Had some wine with dinner but moving onto tea now. Have a night out tomorrow that will require a 16:8 to counter balance the gargle & the grub.
Won't be long helles before the 16's look good, if they fit, sod it wear them with a long top. Every time I go to the loo (sorry tmi) I'm reminded I fit (just about but still) into a smaller size and it revives me!
Delighted for you weCartman, maybe seeing 13.13 on the scales can keep you major disciplined over the weekend, might still be there Monday? Great job on the 20lb, my 1 year old niece weighs that, you've lost a decent sized baby Wink
