Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Flowers for Angie

Inspired by you I came home from my 2nd night shift yesterday morning had a ryvita and a slice of cheese at 8.30am and have had only water since. I'm still not hungry so think I will easily wait 'til lunch time so should have a good 28 hours without food - easiest fast ever.

Great thing about this is that because of my shift patterns Thursday is sort of my 'weekend' and using it as a FD has always left me feeling slightly deprived but now when I start eating later I can have whatever I want knowing the fast is already done Smile

Keep going all Thursday fasters you will feel like this later !

MelanieCheeks · 22/08/2013 09:59

I'm singin Daniel Bedding-plants "I gotta get through this" this morning.

Little nauseous, but water is helping.

And a nice NSV: the weather is cooler and wetter so I reached for a long-sleeved shirt that I haven't worn for a few months. It used to be a little tight across the boobs - today it is loose.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 22/08/2013 11:16

2nd fast of the week and really struggling today Hmm. Am bloody starving and no amount of green tea is taking it away.

Had a small scale victory as have lost holiday weight and another half pound. I've not been this light for a good 2 years. Trying to remember that it's worth it but I could really crack and eat now. Not helped by someone cooking bacon and eggs.

postmanpatscat · 22/08/2013 11:37

Flowers to today's fasters (and to DD1 for her fab GCSE results!)

welcome back ELR sounds like a gorgeous place

Hello everyone.
Took DC to Whitstable yesterday so a looooong day and no time to post.

Going for my second sort of fast day this week (managed 700 cals on Monday). And this time I am looking 500 cals squarely in the eye and aiming for it. Not broken my 16:8 fast yet but will with a cups soup shortly. Oh I know how to live yeah!

I am a bit meh today and want to stamp my foot. It's probably the rain and the fact I am exactly 15 lbs from my target (pre pregnancy weight BMI 21). Sadly this also means I am at least 10lbs from fitting into my old clothes. And that's why I want to stamp my foot.

Stupid really as some of the clothes are now mega old as not worn for almost 5 years (wails). However they are all classics (cashmere, max mara, silks, merino, Joseph, DKNY, Burburry, Mulberry etc etc).

For some reason it's really really pissing me off today. I guess it's a case of so so close but yet no cigar.

There is more as well but will post later as I need to sort out squabbling DC first.

MissStrawberry · 22/08/2013 12:27

I am fasting today. Keep drinking water as feel peckish but not anything I can't ignore. Looking forward to fish pie for tea.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 22/08/2013 13:29

Mrs F your clothes sound divine!
I am scheduled to fast today. It's breakfast time here.
I decided yesterday I was netting too few calories on NFD so ate over 2000 yesterday as an experiment. Didn't eat til lunch yesterday so managed lots of food in an 8 hour window (avocado and chorizo feta salad for lunch, cheese snack and lamb chops with salad and feta supper plus 3 glasses wine).

Have a feeling the wine is going to haunt me on a FD. Anyway if its too rough I will do 16:8 and eat lightly instead for rest of week. Am 5lb off target so it's not going to be as quick losing now and I'm more interested in toning up.

It's six years since Mum died today so feeling sad. Hence going gently this week.

MrsFlorrick · 22/08/2013 13:42

Trucks (((((hugs))))). Sorry to hear that. That is tough.

yecartmannew · 22/08/2013 13:46

(((((( trucks ))))))

Despite myself, I find I am getting interested in doing some exercise!

I have had a look at 30 DS but it looks like it might be too hard on my knees and spine (I have AS, a type of arthritis). Anyone recommend a good short (20 mins or less or I won't stick to it) workout that is fairly low impact? (squatting is not good for arthritic knees).

I feel that I need to start toning now or am in danger of becoming saggy once the lard is no longer filling out my skin Grin

nocomplicationspls · 22/08/2013 13:50

Thanks southeastdweller will try Peppersmith gum Grin
Not so good day yesterday - 21 hr fast ended with mini binge on cheese and crackers. Just felt so rotten/sick/wobbly could not physically make it to the 24 hrs was aiming for Hmm Hoping was a bad fast as we're on hols & really have too much time on hands to be fasting. Will be easier when am home & busy working...

shorterstuff · 22/08/2013 14:03

yecart I too have arthritis in my knees and I do a walking exercise program by Lesley Sansome. you can find this on youtube. There are different length walks but the 1 mile walk that I started with takes about 20 mins. Smile

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 22/08/2013 15:01

yecart df has AS so everything I can think of would be unsuitable. He swears by walking and swimming. Maybe find something doable - like a walk - but work on maintaining a strong core ( belly button to your spine, pelvis in neutral, shoulders relaxed and walking tall).

Belly dancing is supposed to be good for toning your abs.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 22/08/2013 15:10

Lots of ex dancers with arthritic knees swear by Pilates and swimming?

yecartmannew · 22/08/2013 15:42

Thanks for your suggestions peeps.

I do walk every day with the dogs but my senior dog who is even more arthritic than me doesnt move very fast and I don't have the time walk them and then go out on a seperate cardio walk (you cant get far in 10 min Smile), and don't have time to go swimming.

I did do a hospital physio pilates course so I suppose I could re start that, and I do Tai Chi but both these take a while (Both are 1 hour classes although I do try to practice my Tai Chi most days which only takes about 10 minutes). I was thinking more along the lines of a quick strength/cardo workout that I could fit in most days and I would get more "burn" from.

I have downloaded a 6 minute abs workout to my phone so shall give that a go. (just have to be gentle with my spine). and I have found a couple of 10 minute low impact workouts on Youtube which I will try.

changeforthebetter · 22/08/2013 16:00

Today's FD has been a piece of piss.

I had stomach pains and a high temperature in the night, followed by, umm, lots of time on the loo Blush

Today I have had water and one cup of tea an hour ago. I've been feeling ropey for days, waves of heat (thought they were hot flashes) and little energy.

Gilbertus · 22/08/2013 16:37

In a quandary as today should be a FD but FORGOT I am off to a friends for supper and there will be wine. So fasted until 4pm then had tiny tin beans on toast. Couldn't completely fast as would have collapsed after first sip of wine,, Grin

BetsyBell · 22/08/2013 16:46

So, my experimental eat-all-calories-early-and-fast-after is proving unsurprisingly tricky thanks to the power of habit.

I know that I've had plenty of food to be going on with but my autopilot is telling me I should be eating in the next hour or so, especially as I'm cooking for the kids right now!

It's annoying, but ffs I've been doing this for more than 8 months I know better than to listen to the autopilot's demands Grin

[strengthen's resolve]

I want to watch masterchef or bake off on iplayer, but that would be a huge mistake right now I think!

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 22/08/2013 17:06

Oh dear change are you ok? Sounds like a bug...

EagleRiderDirk · 22/08/2013 17:19

Betsy don't watch them. I stupidly watched master chef and I have been starving all day Confused

BetsyBell · 22/08/2013 17:21

T&D I meant to give you some big (((hugs))) xxx

BetsyBell · 22/08/2013 17:25

ERD I'm absolutely not watching them. I've plugged myself into (a non-foodie film on) Netflix while the kids tuck into, what is frankly, the best Toad in the Hole I've ever made. sigh

BsshBossh · 22/08/2013 17:30

Big hugs Trucks.

MrsFlorrick I wear those brands too. I've been wearing them the past two months after a long wait. It's heaven. You can do it. Just be patient. You'll get there.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 22/08/2013 17:34

Thank you for the hugs x

changeforthebetter · 22/08/2013 17:38

Have been lying down in bed all day. Kids are bored witless (I know, a bit of boredom never hurt anyone). Fortunately we did go out yesterday. X sees them Thursdays so will have to cook their tea ShockGrin

I am no longer shivering but things are not right on the bottom department Blush
