Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hugs for Trucks and change.

First fast day this week, both boys were being really wingey and grumpy so it's been a struggle. About 80 calories at lunch and a strawberry at boy's dinner time. L1 D10 shred done and pesto salmon and roasted veg in the oven now- yum!

Was 10st1.8 this morning so less than a lb over my lowest weight despite a fairly indulgent couple of weeks. I'm hoping by the end of next week I see those 9s!

JB30 · 22/08/2013 20:33

Tough FD today. Not bad til lunch, soup & bit of brown roll. Dinner was on the table til 7, and omg I was like a monster possessed, extremely hungry and cranky with it. Finished the day at 575. Anywho it's done and over, tomorrow I eat!

Hugs & Flowers to the sad & poorly, hope tomorrow brings a little lift in spirits.

BetsyBell · 22/08/2013 20:34

Unsurprising update about today's eating all my fast day calories before midday: I am no hungrier right now than I would usually be on a fast day at this time and I'd eaten my usual 6pm dinner.

Dinner time was a little difficult as my body expected to eat but once I'd passed that time and I'd cleaned up after the kids' tea I wasn't that bothered.

I do make more effort with an evening meal though - usually much healthier than what I came up with earlier in the day.

Hey, good work wriggle! The 9s are sight...

Hope you feel better tomorrow change.

changeforthebetter · 22/08/2013 20:36

Thanks for the hugs - virtual is best right now! ConfusedConfusedConfused

Remembered some frozen watermelon left from heat wave. Hope will take my temp down plus give a bit of energy. Would kill for flat, cld coke from old travelling days!

wrigglebum · 22/08/2013 20:47

Change- if you've had pretty much nothing today then even with a flat coke you'll be under 500 Smile. When you're poorly it's good to listen to your cravings.

Dinner was soooooo good. Every time I have a delicious meal without a carb on the side and feel really satisfied I wonder why I bother with the carbs. Going to finish off my meal with some berries.

delilahmoo · 22/08/2013 20:59

Hello all and a massive well done to all who have posted photos, you all look amazing and are very inspirational, especially the shredders! I have been very much dabbling over the school hols as the routine is so different. Started at 9.7 on 4th July, have been as low as 8.13, but been up and down due to not many fasts. Levelling at approx 9.1 most days so quite happy with that. Had a momouth eating weekend last week, fish and chips, , lots of bread, so very happy with a one pound gain. Re newed faith this week, I feel inspired by those that have completed shred, I am on day 7 L1, I can't do every day in the hols. Really looking forward to getting back to it in 10 days when the kids go back! I plan on doing L1 until I'm good at it, is this the right thig to do or should I push it? Also....Anyone else my size and build? Im 5.3 and currently 9.2. What is your comfortable weight? I know it varies, would just like to know other opinions....

postmanpatscat · 22/08/2013 21:52

delilah I'm 5ft 4, slim build and have settled about 8st 4 despite my initial target of 8st 10.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 22/08/2013 22:22

Abandoned FD at 2pm and had favourite 500 cal salad
Chorizo fried in dry pan, crumbled when cooled into green salad, then defrosted big shrimp stir fried in the ex chorizo pan, in the oil that came out. Was delicious.

Might serve it again for DH and me tonight.
That makes a 1000 calorie 16:8 day, not bad as its been a sad one.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 22/08/2013 22:26

Hi Delilah - I think doing level one til good at it is an investment in enjoying l2/3 plus insurance against injury. I did it for almost 3 weeks, resting every 5 days this time. And romped through next two levels whereas I struggled and injured myself three years ago.

It really is great: so quick and brutally effective - well worth taking time to get level 1 press ups nailed with core strength as focus as l2 and 3 involve planks. Lots of planks.

saffronwblue · 22/08/2013 23:46

Hi all
I have done my 5th fast day and have perhaps lost 2 pounds. So it is a bit slow but I feel a bit more in control around food. A link upthread said that you really have to fast until the evening but I have some of my calories about 1 - usually a hard boiled egg. Hope that does not counteract everything!
I do get very sleepy in the early evenings when I fast.

lgwilk · 23/08/2013 06:34

Hi all. Have been doing this for around 5 weeks. 2 fast days per week. Am really good on the fast days. Usually don't have anything till 8pm, and its usually fish and salad or similar. Problem is I'm not losing weight. Has anyone else had this? Does it just not work for some people? Am going to carry on as I don't mind the fast days too much and feel quite good after them, have around a stone to lose and am a bit disappointed :(

postmanpatscat · 23/08/2013 07:26

lg what are you eating/drinking on NFDs? Do you know your TDEE and stay close to it?

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 23/08/2013 07:40

Hi change I give the boy flat lucozade when he has sickness or diarrhoea - a doctor advised it years ago when he had a really bad bug. Little sips kept him better hydrated than water would have and the sugar gave him a little bit of energy.

BsshBossh · 23/08/2013 07:43

I haven't been fasting this school summer holiday and seem to be maintaining a 2 lb gain which I'm really pleased about as I thought I would be gaining much more. Even though I've not been so conscious about my food intake (holidays, eating out loads, family events) I am definitely snacking and eating less. My DH commented how much smaller my main meal portions are and how I am much more likely these days to share my desserts when I eat out Grin

monster54 · 23/08/2013 08:14

I second tandd post on sticking with L1, I wish I had!!!

I'm 4 days in on L2 and it is getting easier but it is heavily focused on push up position my greatest weakness.

That said do feel like I'm seriously pushing myself out of comfort zone and I'm so keen to see even more changes. I've lost inches all over apart from my arms already but they are still looking toned!!!

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 08:31

bssh Life style change victory!

T&D I read your post to Delilahmoo and attempted a proper press ups as they've always been a problem. Plank is fine but unlocking my arms and pushing back up is somehow impossible - I always think my arm strength is good until I attempt them!

Anyway, I managed 3 ok-ish press ups, better than usual. I'm going to stick to level 1 until I can do them properly. Why are they so hard for some of us? Anything else I can do decently and fairly competently, I'm not unfit!

changeforthebetter · 23/08/2013 08:40

Oh well 10st 8 that is a 7lb loss since last week. Every cloud etc....

ELR · 23/08/2013 08:44

Woo hoo exactly change there has to be some benefits!

Still haven't fasted yet was going to yesterday but parents in law have taken the kids to their house until Monday so DH and I decided we would just eat well and relax until Tuesday when he goes back to work and will continue with 5:2 next week instead. There are just too many oppurtunities for nice food, wine and shopping with no kids around!

MrsFlorrick · 23/08/2013 09:09

Igwilk. Welcome. Grin
Can I ask about what you eat on non fast days?

You probably need to workout your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (known as TDEE). There is a link to a website for working it out at the top of this thread.

You should eat at or just below your TDEE on non fast days.

I am very new to this and I have sadly found that if I eat at my TDEE I actually gain weight. This is without fasting and no dieting. I have previously low carbed and kept track of my calories via my fitness pal as I wasn't losing on low carb.

I am not exactly fully doing 5:2. I am starting off with 16:8. Which is an 8 hour "window" where I eat and a 16 hour window where I don't every day. So eg I start eating at 10am and stop at 6pm everyday. It has worked really well and in 3 short weeks I have lost 10lbs. I have had "mini fasts" on two days a week. Ie 1000 cals. I am a whimp and can't manage 500 cals yet.

Also are you fully tracking everything you eat on a fast day? Things like milk in coffee quickly adds up. My Fitness pal is easy to use and free.

Are you exercising? If so perhaps you have lost inches but not weight as you have gained muscle and lost fat. Muscle has a heavier mass than fat. Ie the same cm3 (cube centimetre) of fat and muscle the muscle will weigh more. So you lose fat and gain muscle. You may weigh the same but lose inches. Iyswim.

Any of that help??

Hopefully a veteran with more sage knowledge will be along shortly. Grin

swallowedAfly · 23/08/2013 09:22

i'm fat!

scales haven't moved that much but i feel really fat.

i'm actually really looking forward to getting back on it. everything went tits up after surgery because i wasn't really well enough, then the health scare fuddled me and there was a holiday and..... glad i haven't massively regained but god i'm feeling yuk and bloaty now and struggling to get back on track.

black coffee and water only for me today for as long as i can manage. even if i'm not going to do a proper fast until i go back to work i do need to give my digestive system breaks wherever i can.

for those starting out honestly this way of eating is really worth it and has so many subtle benefits that you may not even notice unless you stop. weird one for me (especially as others have reported the opposite) is that i'm back to losing tonnes of hair when i wash it and general stray hairs all over the house which i hadn't realised had stopped when i was fasting. also energy levels, bloating, digestive stuff etc.

one plus though is that i've gone back to my hair not needing washing every day which when i was fasting it suddenly went really greasy (for me) and always needed washing Confused

anyway - random post sorry - roll on september Smile

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 09:42

saf It's good to have given yourself a break after what you've been through lately, but yes, once you get back to your epic term time walking levels you'll firm up that flab in no time!

Come to think of it, I've not been losing much hair generally since I've been fasting. When I started 5:2 my hair was in a short bob but it's back to being long and I should be finding it everywhere. Interesting. I did notice that a lot less came out when I hennaed it last - normally lose loads in the process.

igw More info needed to advise - eating levels on NFDs, current BMI, exercise levels etc...

I'm thinking about Cake, there are THREE different kinds downstairs! And I didn't touch any of them during yesterday's fast. [willpower]

I'm also thinking about Brew and how well that would go with Cake

Apologies to anyone fasting today! NFD here Grin

AngieM2 · 23/08/2013 09:56

mehefin....yes I think a post nights fast is a good choice, I'm doing it from now on. I'm in Cornwall at the moment and have polished off 3 pasties, a cream team, Italian, almost a bottle of gin and too many glasses bottles of wine and I've still got 2/3 days left...oh, the pain of the scales on Monday...or maybe I'll wait til I've done a couple of FD's?

MelanieCheeks · 23/08/2013 09:57

Last weigh in before hols this morning - 133 pounds, or 9 1/2 stone. I'd like to get under 130, but will aim for that by Christmas. I'm 5'2.

No fasting while in Vegas, though I might go easy on the carbs.

And I will get back ito Shredding when I return.

BetsyBell · 23/08/2013 10:01

Angie I had a similar pasty-fuelled Cornish holiday - I waited until I'd done 3 fasts before weighing in! Definitely worth doing, I knew I'd put on some weight but knew I could get it off again easily so didn't want to torture myself with the numbers.

wrigglebum · 23/08/2013 10:05

Ig- I think Talkinpeace normally recommends calculating your TDEE with 'sedentary' then eating at that less 10% on weekday NFDs, then splurging on one weekend day and TDEE on the other (I'm sure someone can correct me if wrong). Hope it makes sense!

Just attempted proper push-ups and managed five! Much better than any previous attempts! I find it really helps to focus on keeping your core locked and correctly position- helps distract from the pain in my arms Grin.

Well 10st0.4 this morning, so the 9s are really close (I hope)! I have also found that trousers in a 12 from Fat Face, M&S, White Stuff and Primark are all too big! I've got a couple of things that are probably worth getting taken in but otherwise I need to go shopping. I've decided that if and when I get to 9 1/2st I'll splurge on clothes Smile.
