Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi, am back from holiday.

I had lost another pound before I went on holiday but did not have time to update. I had lost a total of 11lbs before the holiday. Anyway, I still weigh the same after the all inclusive 10 day holiday so I am dead chuffed. I did not do any 5:2 whilst away, I ate loads of puddings but I did not snack and I loaded up my plate with a small portion of grilled meat/fish but lots of veg and maybe a little rice (I avoided wheat unless it looked too yummy). But actually, the main thing was, I ate when I was hungry and I stopped eating as soon as I started to feel full.

Right, off to catch up with the thread, although I did peek at trucks pic, and wow you look amazing. Smile

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 21/08/2013 09:21

Half a stone down in the past 3 weeks and that takes my total weight loss this year to 21lb! (With a very long plateau in the middle when I gave up 5:2ing).
Pretty pleased with that!
Only another 2 stone to go !!!

postmanpatscat · 21/08/2013 10:55

Well done tired and welcome back! I'm back Sunday night and will weigh on Mon if I'm brave enough.

Wow trucks looking fab! I agree that Jillian is a god. I'm also a massive Biggest Loser fan even though I've never had significant weight issues (BMI 24 when I started this).

JessieMcJessie · 21/08/2013 13:26

week and a half in and have lost 4.5lbs, which I am quite happy with, and the advice on here not to have breakfast and save the 500 cal for much later worked v well for me. Had a fair amount of cheese and wine at the weekend, but all seems OK. i think that maybe avoiding the biscuit tin on non fast weekdays is helping too.

Question for all you Shredders out there- how do you cope with the press ups?I am only a stone and a half overweight and not too unfit, but can't do even one proper one and even on my knees I can only manage about 2 at a time. I agree that Jillian "I can always use a good chest fly in my life" Michaels and her two Best Girls are inspirational, but having the pressups so early on is really depressing.

southeastdweller · 21/08/2013 13:35

Trucks All I can say is wow!

nocomplicationspls · 21/08/2013 14:00

Jessie agree seems good advice to save the 500 cals on a FD until the evening. I think for me is just easier to wait until the eve, say no food at all until then, then am not constantly thinking about next tiny snack. Also - question for experienced fasters - from a science point of view, or in terms of health benefits, if you are fasting not just to lose weight (tho i have a bit to lose), but also/mainly for the health benefits, isn't it the case that the longer you fast, the greater chance you give your body to really spring clean/cells regenerate/do other important work inside the body than digesting? Any thoughts welcome, thanks!

Am 13 hours into a 24 hour fast (only the 2nd of this length I've done) and am starving!! Focusing not just on fab body I'm sure I'll soon have Wink but also a long happy life enjoying grand kids etc Grin

wrigglebum · 21/08/2013 15:05

Jessie- press ups are a killer. I can do about two proper ones but I can just about manage all through on the knee ones now. It will get better as you get stronger, try to get to the point where it really, really hurts then do one more! That's what will help get you stronger. Also, instead of stopping completely at that point, modify it further by doing the really girly ones (on hands and knees where knees and feet are on the floor iyswim).

monster54 · 21/08/2013 15:51

Hey,

After a bit of advice.

I was plateuing and I moved to 4:3 about 6/7 weeks ago, in which time I've probably lost an additinal 5lbs....

I am now sticking again! I am scared to move to 5:2 and start gaining. I haven't lost for a couple of weeks now.

I have also missed a period (not pregnant) has anyone else had this??

I stick to TDEE during NFD and have one treat day where I splurge a bit.

Now wondering what to do and which way to head!!

Gilbertus · 21/08/2013 16:11

Sad NFD here and I've eaten too much and all of it crap Sad it's like a death wish.

nocomplicationspls · 21/08/2013 16:19

Not been fasting for long enough to see if I'll miss a period Monster, but it's classic with anorexics isn't it. Sorry not meaning to scare you/imply anything! Fasting of any kind is a shock to the body though isn't it - that is one of the points the Horizon doc made I seem to remember? Probably it's nothing to worry about, just one response of your body at this point and will soon get used to the lower/irregular food intake?

On another note/side effect, the nausea is killing me on the fasts. Waves of serious I am going to throw up/can't move a muscle or I will/ can't think about anything other than this awful feeling! Then it passes after about half an hour. Really hard though am not giving up! I am gagging for chewing gym, not going out for a while, but feel that may help. Anyone know where you can buy the aspartame free stuff? Heard that is better...

monster54 · 21/08/2013 16:22

Wow....crazy.

Well I've been fasting almost 6 months now and this is the first time this has happened!!

EagleRiderDirk · 21/08/2013 16:26

monster I had the mirena put in just after starting this woe, so I've no clue what's going on with me and why! isn't there something on the op with a link to something about IF and women's cycles?

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 21/08/2013 16:54

Hello! And thanks again for conpliments - I have been walking on air because of your kind words. I wish I could post just how floppy I was before - think huge swollen belly flapping over waistbands, double chin, I looked 5 months pg.

Re press ups and doing hard exercise generally - Jillian says in a book that it is important to maintain excellent form - if that means going slower so be it - and to work to fatigue - which she specifically says is the point where you could do just one more rep but to do so would have to lose good form and do it badly - at which point you stop.

So when training for press ups, take time to lock into a strong plank, belly button zipped in, strong shoulders and bottom, taut glutes etc. Like you could hold it for a count if ten. On knees to start. Then exhale down and pull up again on an in breath. Strong, strong, nice straight back.

After 5 days you rest. You will be noticeably stronger.
Try again the next week with the first few as full press ups, coming from a fiercely strong, locked core plank.
Wow! You will find you can do one or two real ones.
And so on.

Re stalling. Weight loss is not linear. It slows then goes whoosh again. You also get leaner, smaller, tighter and denser when you train so weight may even increase but you take up less space.
You may also not be eating enough fat and protein on NF D or drinking enough water.

How about a handful of nuts or a small avocado salad with a splash of olive oil and lime juice as a post work out snack? Full of good fats, and lack of fat can cause your metabolism to hang into fat, paradoxically. Protein helps muscles repair and grow. Water, obviously helps everything including weight loss - you can't burn fat if dehydrated.

MissStrawberry · 21/08/2013 17:32

Hello everyone. I'm back from my trip "home." Now trying not to cry as missing everyone and the place. Managed to see a lady I haven't seen for 33 years and it was wonderful.

Took loads of chocolate, biscuits and sweets and it has all come back except for a snicker and I only ate that because I felt like I was falling asleep. 2 hours Monday night and a few more Tuesday is not conducive for looking after three kids and driving 230 miles. Should probably fast tomorrow as I didn't on Sunday though even on normal eat days I still eat less than I would pre 5:2.

Hope all is okay. Will try and catch up and read everyone's posts from while I was away.

EagleRiderDirk · 21/08/2013 22:20

is everyone still in holiday mode? very slow posting going on. have you all got real lives? Wink

mini fast tomorrow with Chinese for dinner (counted at about half Tdee - bonus result). need all the spare calories I can get for Friday. had a sneaky guesstimate of food calories and I've hit Tdee, but there will be much wine had too. well we all need a blowout sometimes.

southeastdweller · 21/08/2013 22:26

nocomplicationspls Try Peppersmith gum. Waitrose, Holland & Barrett, and Amazon sell it and I think Sainsbury's also.

tryinghard2 · 22/08/2013 07:12

Monster i dont know about missing the period but i had the same drooping to 52 fear. I had a bit of a stall but i had a week off and then went back to strict 43 and its alk going good again.

tryinghard2 · 22/08/2013 07:12

Dropping haha!

JB30 · 22/08/2013 07:53

Morning Thursday fd'ers, hope we're all geared up and rearing to go! I've been trying a new tactic on FD's, I wear clothes that I've been skinnying into, they NEARLY fit nicely but don't Grin Stick a long top over the bulging button and then I can't eat to excess or I'm in trouble! A FD hair shirt if you will Wink
Busy busy day ahead, great for distraction. Have a good day y'all

Doitnow · 22/08/2013 08:27

I'm fasting today too but had horrendous night with a poorly little one so am not starting on the best foot. Will see how I get on but this woe isn't supposed to be torture so if it gets too hard I can always do another day.

Off to get a coffee and a pint of water!

monster54 · 22/08/2013 08:43

Im in....consecutive FD wavered a bit this morning....

But decided to go for it today so I can enjoy a glass of wine tomorrow to toast the bh weekend in!!!!

ELR · 22/08/2013 09:15

Hi everyone just checking in.
Just back from 2 weeks in the Alps so plenty of walking and exercise but it was in a catered chalet so cooked breakfasts, packed lunches afternoon tea and 5 course dinner with free flowing wine and cheese board every night! Was really scared to get weighed this morning but its not too bad I'm up to 10.4.5 so it's not too bad I've measured to and gained half an inch on hips, waist and thighs. Clothes are still fitting fine so I reckon a few weeks and should have got rid of the excess weight gain.
Have skim read the thread and looks like some of you are doing fab erd and silver well done. Big wave to everyone else. So glad to be back and looking forward to a good fast!

monster54 · 22/08/2013 09:32

Seriously need to share this with you guys....

So there's a lady in my office I noticed wow she's looking great, didn't want to say anything to make her feel conscious.

Another lady today was like oh no biscuit thanks I'm on a FD, so I chimed in said 'oh I'm on a FD' I've been fasting since February....

Big discussions start and turns out First Lady is fasting too!!!

How funny!!!!

BetsyBell · 22/08/2013 09:35

Fast day. Slightly hungover after some celebrations yesterday. I was considering eating all my calories for a breakfast but thought there's absolutely no way I'd follow that through without failing later today so I went for a run instead and some other exercises at home.

Now watching the cat clean a lot of garden debris off its fur straight onto my yoga mat I haven't rolled back up yet. Yuk!

Normally the run would ward off hunger but apparently not today... stomach's rumbling a bit. So shower, then coffee and hold off as long as I can.

Maybe I should just have brunch then fast till tomorrow morning. It might be a better way to go as I last ate at 9 last night so I've got a really long wait to even hit 16 hours fasting, but if I ate at 11am I could get 22 hours at least.

I might give it a go, it might end in fail but so be it!

BetsyBell · 22/08/2013 09:39

monster There's a lot of us about clearly!

Hi ELR - I refused to weigh myself after hols until I'd got a few fasts under my belt! Only took 3 to get rid of the excess, however much it was... (it felt like 4lbs or so of pure belly jiggle!) Your holiday sounds wonderful - love the idea of a catered chalet and mountainous walking holiday.
