The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

What is 16:8?

swallowedAfly · 04/08/2013 11:30

JB sometimes you NEED a blow out - sod it! ouch to the head though.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 04/08/2013 11:43

SwallowedAFly - yes, it's tough being in all day - I usually fast at work, more distractions and less temptation!

Miss S - 16/8 = waiting 16 hrs before eating on a fast day - ie. 16 hrs since your last meal. Then 8 'eating' hours.
I think it's meant to have health benefits as it means your system has processed last night's food and is properly empty. But someone with more expertise than me can probably elaborate better ...

JB30 · 04/08/2013 11:55

I think that captures the essence Somewhere In addition for me, as I chose my 8 hours from lunch time, it cuts me down to 2 meals. My fd's are all 16:8's so I do 2-3 naturally depending on whether I'm doing 5:2 or 4:3. One book I read said you could chose 16:8 as an ongoing way to do IF without having to do the 500 cal days. At least that's what I think it said, brain is saturated in wine/gin (that sounds dreadful, I wasnt that bad - I don't have to drink bottles to suffer, quite the contrary)
I've done 4 x 16:8's this week so to be fair, that's enough.
Just had cake, shameless I am Wink

swallowedAfly · 04/08/2013 11:59

i naturally only tend to eat in a small window and that works fine for maintaining. i'd say i'm usually about 18:6. it doesn't make me lose weight though personally.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 04/08/2013 12:06

Yeah I can do 16:8 and still manage to consume way more calories than is desirable, easily! Hence my need to get back onto the 5:2 wagon.
It does help with maintenance though I find.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 04/08/2013 12:13

Well done lizzabadger!

wrigglebum · 04/08/2013 13:00

Well done missstrawberry, it gets a lot easier after the first couple of fasts too. And great work lizzabadger!

Well after yesterday's snacktastic day finished off with fish and chips I'm still at 10st3.2, so quite pleased. I did another shred today, so five times down now.

I'm really starting to feel a difference now, I can tell I'm getting leaner and see that a bit more fat loss and some toning and I'll be in the best shape of my adult life. I just hope it keeps being as easy as this!

Just wanted to remind all of you who are losing weight to get your bra size properly remeasured at some point (not at M&S!), check out one of the bra threads for how to do it properly. A properly fitting bra will make you look even more amazing and be the icing on the cake. Lecture over, as you were Grin.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 04/08/2013 13:21

I bloody well wish I could lose some weight off my tits :-D I'd dearly love to have smaller boobs - if only 5:2 could deliver that !! :-D

postmanpatscat · 04/08/2013 13:22

Well done strawberry and lizza

Oh dear saf better luck tomorrow!

I'm fasting today as I can't face fasting + Legoland + 4yo DSD tomorrow. I've already been to the gym and did a Biggest Loser style last chance workout - this time next week we'll be on a plane!

wildwater · 04/08/2013 13:46

It has for me. Sizes are different in NZ, but I have dropped from 16GG to 12DD. Fairly astonishing for somebody who has always been known for her large bosom! Now I can wear the non-stretch tops I have always longed for...

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 04/08/2013 13:51

That's great wildwater - well done!
I went down a back size when I lost a stone earlier this year - but no change on the cup size. Gah !!

swallowedAfly · 04/08/2013 13:57

the cup size isn't fixed to the letter though somewhere - if you drop a back size the cup IS getting smaller too. not explaining that well at all but if you put the cups of a 34D and a 32D side by side they would not be the same size.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 04/08/2013 14:45

I know what you're saying - I've lurked on the bra fitting threads here! - just would like to be a, oh I dunno, B-cup or something :-D

Lizzabadger · 04/08/2013 14:53

Thanks everyone. Keep at it MissStrawberry. There will probably come a time when you hardly even notice you are fasting.

angelabbie · 04/08/2013 15:38

Hi Re: 16/8 you can lose weight this way but there is a little more to it than just fasting for 16 hours. Before you break the fast you need to do 9 minutes of exercise, not too difficult, I go for a good speed walk before I eat this starts the fat burning process that continues through the day. You also need to eat certain foods within your meals for the 8 hours that you eat which is all pretty standard good for you food such as turkey, oatmeal, blueberries etc. Again your body gets used to going for the healthy food so you naturally eat less in the 8 hours and are missing one meal a day. I personally have found if I do one fast day on a monday and 18/8 the rest of the week I still lose weight but maybe a bit slower. It suits me down to the ground. Also just came back from a five day holiday where is just did 16/8 for three days. Put on 1 kg and did a fast day yesterday and am back to what I was before I went so holidays not so scary for me now.
x

angelabbie · 04/08/2013 15:40

sorry should read 16:8 not 18:8 lol

Talkinpeace · 04/08/2013 15:49

angel
please ignore all the "superfood" messages in the media. They are bilge.
and prescribing minutes of exercise before breaking a fast - is that on top of the 3 hours I normally do on a Friday morning?
"healthy food" pah. Roast beef and cider today. nom nom

BUT
to be a bit cheerier, welcome aboard.

Old gits like me have been doing this nearly a year and fast out of habit
and knowing that my TDEE will drop by 10% a decade even if my weight stays the same has brought things into focus

Dotty342kids · 04/08/2013 16:46

Hello all, just checking in after a terrible weekend, food and drink wise! Yesterday was friends barbecue all afternoon / evening so drank wine, ate too much, then being drunk gave me terrible munchies so ate even more.
Woke up, dehydrated and hungover at 6.00 this morning so am shattered and have drunk full fat coke, eaten chocolate and am about to tuck into a chilli in order to get through the day functioning.
For first time in a long time I feel really fat and icky! Might do a third fast this week to try to undo some of the damage Grin
Welcome all newbies by the way!

MissStrawberry · 04/08/2013 16:53

Hi everyone

Just back from taking DD to spend her birthday money. I bought her a couple more presents as her main present was a disaster and has to go back Angry.

Today I had a child's size portion of the left over bacon lasagne but wished I hadn't to be honest. Should have had half of it as wasn't starving for lunch. Had roast chicken, smaller than usual parmentier potato portion, 1 small Yorkshire pudding, broccoli, green beans, sweet corn, cabbage and parsnips. Just had a slice of home made oat and linseed bread but not sure what I do about dinner later.

Will fast on Wednesday as can't on Monday or Tuesday.

Talkinpeace · 04/08/2013 16:57

((((miss strawb))))
How old is she, what did you get, can we help

MissStrawberry · 04/08/2013 17:08

She is 10. We bought her a xylophone as we couldn't afford the marimba she wanted. Waited in and it didn't come as they lost it. Didn't call to let us know. 2 days later it turned up, box damaged, foot print on protective bag. Waited in again for it to be taken away. Waited in again for another one to come. She opened it on her birthday - stick broken, big dent out of the end. New sticks couriered out (had to demand those!) and then noticed another piece missing so a note didn't play properly. At that point we had had enough so it is going back for a full refund. Will never shop with them again and we have bought her lots of books instead. If we win the lottery she can have her marimba.

She has been so good about it but DH and I are really upset as she was so happy when she opened it.

Talkinpeace · 04/08/2013 17:31

oh golly that sounds stressful : do have a look at buying one second hand on ebay as then you can get top quality for lower price

MissStrawberry · 04/08/2013 17:59

Even second hand a marimba is £1500 approx.

Unfortunately there isn't really any other suppliers for xylophones other than the one we used or America it seems.

Talkinpeace · 04/08/2013 18:01
