The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Miss
hang on in there
as I know from the early threads that emotional eaters who make the break get the most mahoosive endorphin, adrenaline, coolness rush
when they make it through the first days / weeks of control
because its about your brain ruling your stomach for the long term good of you and your family and this IS WORTH the effort
and you are worth the effort

and TBH, WTF is DH doing making toast at 9.30 at night : he's knackering HIS system by doing so.
give him a shin kick from me ( a real one)

MissStrawberry · 03/08/2013 21:47

I had a tomato. Just 17 calories.

MissStrawberry · 03/08/2013 21:52

DH is so slim and only eats when hungry so I am a bit envious of him tbh but then he doesn't have any food issues!

I am off to bed now. I am shattered. Too many early starts!

ceebeegeebies · 03/08/2013 22:07

TIP my friend has PCOS and her GP has suggested she tries this WOE as she has put a lot of weight on. But, then again, he has also prescribed her slimming tablets so I am a little Hmm

swallowedAfly · 04/08/2013 07:40

morning. messed up last night which is a shame after such a good long fast (22hrs zero cal). got munchies and gave in. hoping there'll still be some benefit from the fast even though i didn't stick to the 500 and will call it my 'warm up' fast.

in work on monday for a while and appointment in the afternoon and ds back with me in evening so i'll make that a fast day as i'll be busy and aim to make that one a 500cal max one.

weight back down a pound and a bit this morning and won't be eating today till mid afternoon at my folks and that will be sunday dinner minus the yorkshire and am not a big roastie fan so shouldn't be too bad. will see what the scales say tomorrow before setting out on my fast.

well down missS Smile

ceebeegeebies · 04/08/2013 08:30

likeahurricane - you will be pleased to know that I don't recognise you or your DH Grin you do look amazing though. Can you remind me of your stats to give me a boost?

shorterstuff · 04/08/2013 08:33

Hi again, When i asked about extra calories for exercising I have realised that I didn't give enough information. I started this WOE back in February, before that I was calorie counting. I have lost 2st since last August, adjusting my TDEE downwards as I went. But 3 months ago i started exercising a 5days a week, gently at first (arthritic knees and thinning bones) but now am doing half an hour of low impact exercise. What I wanted to know is:- how long after you start exercising can you re-adjust your TDEE to take account of that? If at all? any help would be appreciated

HellesBelles396IsDeeplyUncool · 04/08/2013 08:38

Hi ShorterStuff most people on here don't seem to adjust tdee for exercise sticking with sedentary or lightly active to increase the loss. Maintainers, though, seem to. Probably not by adjusting tdee but by entering exercise into mfp and eating to their net calorie goal. Hope that makes sense.

swallowedAfly · 04/08/2013 08:41

imo shorterstuff it depends if you're trying to lose weight or not. personally i wouldn't adjust my tdee to include exercise unless i had lost enough weight and didn't want to lose anymore but was doing itms. why eat it back? it's there as a reserve obviously so if you have a day with a bit of a splurge then fine you know you've got it covered really because you exercise but i wouldn't factor it in on a daily basis.

one reason is the weight loss the other reason for me would be what if i got an injury and couldn't exercise? or some other thing happened that stopped me but i was used to eating amount x?

entirely up to you obviously but on fast days you definitely don't adjust the calories for exercise as 500 is already the concession iyswim to a proper fast being too hard for people and eating more limits the rest that the digestive system is getting.

swallowedAfly · 04/08/2013 08:45

then again i don't count calories personally and i don't want to (other than fast days) because a) i hate it and b) i just want to get to a stage where my eating is intuitively fine over the whole week with enough light days balancing out the heavier days because it 'feels' right rather than calorie counting.

i 'think', given i've not been fasting for ages because of surgery and holiday yet have maintained without any conscious effort, that this woe has given me that intuitive 'eating the right amount overall' sort of balance.

trouble now is i want to lose another stone! Grin so here we go again on trying to undercut with fasts and readjust again the amount i eat. realistically it may take me another 6 months but hey ho!

shorterstuff · 04/08/2013 09:16

saf thanks for that. I am almost at my goal of 8st, 8st 4 now. Being 53 I don't want to look ill and I think I will if i lose much more. I won't adjust the TDEE but, as you say, use it as a buffer in case of too much Wine

swallowedAfly · 04/08/2013 09:25

blimey shorter - how short are you? was about to go into total shock at aiming for 8st in your 50's then did a retake on your name and realised you are probably a lot smaller than me!

Lizzabadger · 04/08/2013 10:23

10st 12 lb - woo hoo! First mini-goal of breaking the 11 st barrier met. One stone to go.

shorterstuff · 04/08/2013 10:30

saf i'm 4' 11" and shrinking a bit so just as i think my height to waist ratio is right i have to start again

MissStrawberry · 04/08/2013 11:08

Morning all!

DH taken kids to play trains so I am getting jobs done and about to start a roast dinner. Haven't had anything to eat yet since the tomato last night and starting to get a bit peckish. Lunch will be 1-15-1.30 so I was wondering if I could have the child's size portion of the bacon lasagne that is left from last night to keep me going until then?

I woke up feeling really skinny Grin. Clearly I am not but I naughtily got on the scales and I am 2lbs down from my last weigh in a few days ago but I am just finishing time of the month so is probably more to do with that.

I feel really positive and want to thank you all for welcoming me and explaining very patiently how to go about this. I am hopeful I will be able to do this.
FlowersFlowers.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 04/08/2013 11:09

Right. Hello all. I'm joining the thread.

I lost a stone doing 5:2 earlier this year and have maintained since then, but with a big holiday planned for end-November I want to be another stone down by the time I go - so it's time to get back onto this particular horse!
Did two fast days last week, had an indulgent day yesterday, fasting again today.

Greatly looking forward to the two-egg-and-lotsa-veg omlette I've got planned for lunch. Chicken and veg soup for dinner. Nothing too challenging planned today, just chilling out with a book, but being at home is hard because of the temptation to snack. I've got some tasty little Graze boxes stashed away, but must resist!

swallowedAfly · 04/08/2013 11:12

lizza - woo hoo! well done you. not just broke the threshold there but trounced it Grin

missS you are more than welcome and well done for that first fast. glad you're feeling positive.

somewhere - like you i've had a while of just maintaining and like you i have another stone i want to lose now so need to get back on it properly. agree being at home is bloody challenging!

JB30 · 04/08/2013 11:13

This is turning into a tiny bit of a binge weekend round my way. Few too many drinks last night, followed by white toast/real butter combo this morning despite starting out as a 16:8 on account of night out tonight. Head is thumping Sad I get this really vile headache that is in my temples, sometime on the top of my head when it's a particularly vicious hangover - thankfully I don't get hangovers too often but last night me and dh just needed a blowout I think. Oh well, at least I've about 5 hours before I've to do much. I think is most defo an nfd with bells on! Might need to resign myself to maintenance this week. Novel thought that, I've never looked at it that way
