BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Ok, I am officially ravenous and very much desiring ice cream / chocolates / wine. HELP!

AngieM2 · 11/07/2013 16:59

My fourth fast day today and the last 10 days have been going ok. Had to break it at 2pm (school leaving lunch), had gone 17 hours. Couldnt weigh anything but had 1 slice of ham, piece of chicken breast (about 3/4 of a breast, no skin) and small piece of cooked salmon (a square about 5cm X 3cm), some lettuce and half a tomato, oh, and a shortbread biscuit (damn, prob about 100 cal). Please tell me this is within the 500 calories - otherwise I'm going to jump of the nearest cliff or go and get some chippy for tea! Help!

Southeastdweller · 11/07/2013 16:59

Hi everyone. NFD here and I?ve almost overdosed on processed carbs which I put down to a few glasses of wine last night. But I?m having a left over veggie curry tonight with no rice so there?ll be a little halo polishing later too Grin

Hi pep. It?s not terribly exciting really ? my anti-social next door neighbours have been getting on my wick for too long and despite me and my live-in-landlord reporting them to the authorities nothing?s changed so I?m biting the bullet and leaving in the autumn. Been reluctant so far because the London rental market is so expensive now and where I am now is dirt cheap (for London) but my quality of life is crap in some ways and I can?t take it anymore. So I?m going to suck up paying half of my salary on rent for a few months in a nice area and then probably leave London next year to do a post-grad course somewhere up north. I?m just thankful I?m not stuck in this toilet with a mortgage! On the positive side, I think this WOL has a lot to answer for in improving my mood and drive.

Sorry to bore everyone!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 11/07/2013 17:06

angie think you're ok, sounds about 500 cals to me, go you! just have some oxo/stock/miso soup later or tea/coffee/fizzy water and an early night and you've done it!

AwkwardSquad · 11/07/2013 17:12

Thanks, mumofcrazynamedkids, I didn't quite manage to tough it out but have only had about 150 cals, with a 17 hour fast. Looking forward to an omelette in about an hour! I have had no access to food this afternoon so that lessens the temptation.

AngieM2 · 11/07/2013 17:13

Thanks mum just what I wanted to hear....this is the first FD where I've been in the situation where I haven't been able to count/weigh the food I've had and I don't like the guess work involved. So, water and peppermint tea is the way forward for me tonight. dotty you can do it, think how amazing you will feel if you avoid the wine, chocolate and ice cream...though thinking about it, I'd chop my arm off right now for any one of those!

Dotty342kids · 11/07/2013 17:23

Thanks Angie, my fast day dinner is now in the oven and going to have a handful of strawberries with the smallest smidge of ice cream afterwards to appease my sweet tooth!

SquidgyMummy · 11/07/2013 17:23

On my 3rd FD now, started this last Wednesday and was thrilled with the original 4 lb weight loss (psychological boost).

However, now i feel like i am gaining and losing the same couple of pounds. After a NFD i am about 12st 2lbs and after a FD I am 12stone.

I was at the gymn 4 times a week whilst DS was at nursery (& lost 10lbs) but now that he is on his summer holiday, i am less active. Am thinking about going for a run in the morning to try and give my metabolism a kick.

I think i need to check my TDEE on NFDs as my BMI is over 25 with good reason overeating
Anyone else had this same yo-yo plateauing? any tips?

icecreamcrackers · 11/07/2013 17:47

Help I'm in need of a talking too, on a fast day today after being sick with migraine last night and have eaten crap today.

If I don't eat anything else now I will still be under but if I eat I will be at just under 600. Feel so greedy and disappointed in myself after an easy first week.

MissUnicorn · 11/07/2013 17:49

Oooh Vegetarian Shepherds Pie sounds lush Dotty
Cat last TOTM gone, I only managed 6:1. It felt impossible. Maybe if you can't manage a full fast, you could do 16:8 instead?

I've been so tempted to snack today, but have kept going by reminding myself of my reward pedicure for not snacking. Going to make my meal now.

BsshBossh · 11/07/2013 17:52

mumofcrazynamedkids great loss, but I'm glad I'm not your colleague (I'd be having to resist a lot of yummy cake) Grin

BetsyBell · 11/07/2013 17:55

icecream You are doing fine. But stop eating junk now and aim to eat something healthy for dinner and go over a bit; it still counts as a fast day. I suggest this otherwise you might end up seriously self-sabotaging and feeling worse about yourself.

Next time, plan your eating and stick to it.

I failed to plan properly today and will end up at 600-700 calories I think, and I really should know better by now! BUt some days are like that and as long as it's occasional there's no point wasting time feeling guilty.

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 11/07/2013 17:56

Betsy I'm not impressed with my FD either - no food but have been having one too many Coke Zeros - argh! I know they are poison but today I can't help it (though have no clue why I can't help it).

angelabbie · 11/07/2013 17:56

Icecream, the thing is you have still eaten far less than you would have done on a normal day so really there is nothing to feel disappointed about! If you go over this time you may go under next time. Give your body a chance to get used to it all, its a big change.

Squidgy, I do the same thing, up and down like a yo yo and feel that I am not really losing but I must be as five weeks has seen 3kg disappear. I think also that some lose quicker than others so I try not to compare to others. Do you weigh every day??

mttum · 11/07/2013 18:12

Seems a few of us are having a difficult fast day for one reason or another. I've been up since 4am so it's been even longer than usual for me today.

Come on everyone, we can do it! Only a few more hours and we can go to bed then....NFD!! Biscuit Wine

somewherebecomingrain · 11/07/2013 18:30

mttum am flagging - your message really helped

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 11/07/2013 18:42

It's funny how it goes in waves, one minute ravenous, next feeling like you are just running a bit late for lunch. Tuna salad for me in a bit then off for an early night here too mttum

Gilbertus · 11/07/2013 18:42

I've had a brilliant third fast day (sorry)!

Nothing until 2 then a 0% yogurt (disgusting actually) activia peach and a mug of miso soup.
I've had nothing else all day. I have a pot of soup in the fridge but I am not actually hungry Shock

Beachcomber · 11/07/2013 18:43

Gosh I have just eaten my dinner and it was great. Managed all day just on a couple of cups of vegetable stock except when I cracked in the afternoon when we were out and the DC were having a snack in a café and I had a Coke zero. I know they are bad for you and muck up metabolism but at least I didn't have a cake!

Drank loads of water and green tea and felt OK - a bit light headed and vague at the end of the afternoon but it came and went in waves and never got unmanageable.

I have just eaten a big plate of shredded courgette, bell peppers, chopped onion and beetroot with a handful of chick peas, a small slice of ham and a tiny piece of fish to add some protein. I just logged it on LoseIt and it came in (counting the veg stock from earlier) at 405 calories. i enjoyed every mouthful and actually feel pretty full. I have natural yoghurts in the fridge which are 85 calories so may have one later if I feel the need.

Couldn't face my usual exercise, never mind, will do it tomorrow. Am hoping that as my body gets used to the fasts I will manage exercise better.

3rd fast done! (OK I know it isn't bed time yet but I will go early and really don't want to waste the effort of today by cracking now. Have yoghurt as life vest if I start gnawing my hands.)

EagleRiderDirk · 11/07/2013 18:50

Thanks for the sympathies somewhere and the optimism mttum

Just waiting for OH to come back then I'm palming the kids onto him and making my dinner. Then I'm off to bed!

Come on FDers. We're either there or nearly at dinner time!

Dotty342kids · 11/07/2013 18:51

squidgy if you've only just done your third fast day then a 2lb loss is great! We have all had what we call "bounces" where you go up and down between fast days and non fast days. This is completely normal! Sounds like you might be weighing yourself far too often? If you only weigh once a week, whenever that is, then you'll only see the loss, and not all the ups and downs in between, which might suit you better!
I weigh every morning but take absolutely no notice of the daily fluctuations and only take notice of the weigh in that I do after my second fast of the week. Works for me Smile
Keep at it, and the overall trend will be downwards, even if there are some little gains along the way!

Beachcomber · 11/07/2013 18:51

Also wanted to say, thanks to everyone here. I have read a few of the threads and picked up so many tips.

Today's mantra was "you can eat that tomorrow" which I read on here and it really did help and put things in perspective (especially when I was sautéing new potatoes from the garden for the children at lunch time!)

Sending solidarity vibes to other Thursday fasters.

trufflehumper · 11/07/2013 19:30

Hello Smile new to Mumsnet. Was recommended by another mumsnetter to join this thread as was thinking of doing FBI diet. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between 5:2 and FBI and which in their opinion is more effective?
Also for serial over eaters - is sticking to this diet plan achieve able?

HellesBelles396 · 11/07/2013 19:51

Lessons learned from my first fast day:

I can survive hunger pangs
Drinking cold water helps with hunger pangs
Having fruit for breakfast is not a good start to my day -trying an egg next week
There is no way I can eat 60g of salad leaves without some protein to liven it up - only managed 30g but wasn't particularly hungry
Stay away from people offering cheese. Yup, 300 calories of brie hoovered up in seconds and I wasn't even hungry.

Ended on 800. Well under what I would normally eatt but well over what I had planned. Disappointing considering I was not even slightly hungry when I ate the cheese.

Gilbertus · 11/07/2013 20:02

Ate the soup, plus a tiny piece of fried chicken and two cubes of grilled potatoes - had to taste it just to check... Grin

Am looking forward to my first weigh in tomorrow.
