The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

DH on his way home. In 30 minutes I can break my fast - hurrah! And then 3 NFDs - double (or triple?) hurrah! Am perusing cookbooks to see what I fancy tomorrow :)

EagleRiderDirk · 11/07/2013 20:14

Fast broken. I'm very full, very satisfied and just trying to give my stomach a bit of a break before going to bed.

Bssh enjoy!

Dotty342kids · 11/07/2013 20:17

Had my veg shepherds pie and broccoli and then a few strawberris and bit of ice cream. But then caved and had a small slice of lemon cake. Aargh! Still, don't think I'm too far over.
Weigh in tomorrow!

BsshBossh · 11/07/2013 20:34

Dotty I wouldn't worry about cake. Last week I ate a very large slice of chocolate and whiskey cake on a FD night that took me well over 500 cals and still lost. So long as you've been reasonably good all week you'll be fine.

alwaysanauntie · 11/07/2013 20:36

A quick hello from me, marking my place.

I slipped off the wagon last week due to humungous amounts of cake at work and 2 birthday parties for my mum, but am back on it Grin

Am still trying to catch up with the end of the last thread before I read the 10 pages there already are of this one (it's only been a week - wail!), so apologies if I've missed any major news... see you later!

BetsyBell · 11/07/2013 20:44

HellesBelles I chop up a bit of ham and ideally a boiled egg to go with my lunch salad leaves, dress it with lemon juice and a bit of fat free yogurt, maybe some jalapeno peppers too... yum yum.

Now you know you can survive hunger pangs try moving breakfast back until you don't need it at all. It's amazing how a big cup of tea and/or coffee can be completely satisfying and doesn't trigger hunger in the same way...

Thanks BsshBossh I'll report back in the morning!

BetsyBell · 11/07/2013 20:49

Welcome trufflehumper, if I knew what and FBI diet was I might be able to help you... [racks brains thinking what Mulder & Scully ate] [shows age]

Do read the OP links to find out more about 5:2 if you haven't done so already though Smile

Hello to other newcomers I haven't said hello to yet [waves], you're all doing better than the regulars by the sound of it...

PUT DOWN THE CAKES FASTERS AND WAIT TILL TOMORROW Grin

BetsyBell · 11/07/2013 20:51

And the coke zeros... [tut tut] Wink

I had a disappointing discovery last week: an annoying side effect of this WOE is that sugary fizzy drinks just make my mouth and teeth feel so awful I don't want to drink them anymore. I'm not talking about fanta and the like, couldn't give a monkeys about that syrupy stuff.

I'm talking about gin and effing tonic!

Awful.

And now I'll be kicked off Mumsnet for admitting it.

Sad

Hi @betsybell. FBI diet is the Fast, Balance and Indulgence diet. Seems quite similar to 5:2. You fast for 2-3 days @ around 500 calories, then eat balanced foods for 2 days (from a list provided), then have two indulgence days when you can eat freely (within reason if you want to keep losing). Just wondered if it works for those with compulsive over-eating?

EagleRiderDirk · 11/07/2013 21:31

Betsy get out ->
follows sheepishly as she never liked gin and tonic anyway

Talkinpeace · 11/07/2013 21:36

trufflehumper
FBI diet sounds like an over complicated prescriptive version of 5:2 - is there perchance a book to go with it Wink

BetsyBell · 11/07/2013 21:43

Truffle That sounds interesting and similar to what many of us do on here, except we don't work from a list. I personally attempt to follow 2 fast days (500cals), behave on the other weekdays (no booze, healthy eating), and let go a little bit on the weekend.

The fasting certainly helps retrain and reset appetites so overall eating is reduced. It doesn't necessarily retrain permanently (according to long time fasters who've stopped, and now returned to it), but works well while on this WOE. But it's so easy to do that there's no real reason not to carry on with it. I don't need to lose more weight but it allows me to maintain and have a brilliant relationship with food and I've learnt to love the feeling of giving my digestive system a good break a couple of times a week.

Eagle I'll get my coat...

OP posts:
akarucker · 11/07/2013 21:44

truffle that seems very similar to what most people do here: fast two or three times in the week, be 'good' on the other week day days, and indulge a bit at the weekend.

BetsyBell · 11/07/2013 21:47

I don't like being told when I'm allowed to fast, eat healthy or indulge though... the beauty of this WOE is we set our own rules, or not, depending on how we feel Grin

AmericasTorturedBrow · 11/07/2013 22:14

Someone give me a kick up the arse - NFD but no sleep last night (thanks DD) so I'm tired And grumpy and seem to be intent on eating my way through the day Hmm

Talkinpeace · 11/07/2013 22:19

WHACK
Stop eating. Have a mug of tea and a bowl of miso soup
keep the non cal fluis on the go so that you are constantly slightly full but not with calories

MissUnicorn · 11/07/2013 22:33

Well done fasters! Even if you went over you're still well under your TDEE.

Weigh in tomorrow I really hope I've lost something.
Gonna have a Brew, exercise and bed.

Mintyy · 11/07/2013 23:02

Just marking place, too tired to post now. Will update on gp visit tomorrow.

Warning: it will be a long and and hugely self pitying post!

But, stuck to my 500 calories again today Grin. Must be about 90 fast days I've done now.

BsshBossh · 11/07/2013 23:16

Truffle I'm echoing others: I've naturally fallen into a pattern of 2 days 500 cals, 3 days balanced/healthyish eating (generally under TDEE but no list as such) and 2 days (the weekend) of eating whatever/whenever/however much I want (though my appetite has strunk). I still call it 5:2.

outingmyselfprobably · 11/07/2013 23:34

Going to try my second day tomorrow.

Finished watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Really inspirational and touching. On Channel 5 on demand.

CrystalDeCanter · 12/07/2013 00:36

Oh Mintyy sorry to hear the doc was bad news. Have a good sleep, hopefully all will seem a bit less worrysome in the morning. Flowers

Well done to all the fasters, great work.

Interesting to see you talk about Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. It was on over here (Australia) a week or so ago, my friend was raving about it. I must watch it. I did do a juice fast for a week once. I lost HEAPS of weight (about 7lbs) but was so hungry as soon as I stopped I ate EVERYTHING I'd missed out on and put the weight back on. I wonder if I'd be better now as I'm a bit less panicky when hungry.

JB30 · 12/07/2013 04:17

Have a gander on amazon about FBI - same conclusion as all others who commented, if you're doing 5:2, it's pretty much the same. Save your squids and watch this space, its been my daily source of info/inspiration for last few weeks. On hols tomorrow, can't sleep! Going to do a FD today except it won't be a proper 500 but no more than
800 or 1000, or 1200as can't fit in a Friday Wine on 500. And I gotta have that (dipso) A bit concerned about holidays, one year I put on 10 pound in 2 weeks, about what I've lost over the last 7 weeks! Am aiming to do some 16:8's, plenty of walking/jogging and mindful eating/drinking. It's all inclusive which taking into account my greedy gene is a flashing warning light to me. Anyway, I'll just keep busy, be one of those people who do all the activities. I've already managed to change my eating quite a lot, no reason to believe success can't be achieved away from home.
Happy Friday all and good luck to fellow fasters!
