The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hello everyone, I've been mostly lurking on these threads, they're a great source of encouragement. And I need some today, I'm struggling! Fasted on Tuesday, no bother, but today it's tough going. No reason why! So I'm about to have a comforting miso soup Smile

ELR · 11/07/2013 12:16

Hi all, I'm fasting today too. Went out for a curry and had quite a bit to drink last night so I'm really feeling it today! Normally on a fast day I have black coffee and water until I break my fast around 1pm but today I have already had three cups of tea with milk and loads of water it was either that or a carb fest!
Not feeling hungry really just a bit rough haven't had a curry or drank for ages. Was pleased I didn't over do it on the curry and really enjoyed the food I chose salmon tikka for a starter instead of my usual somosa/bhaji combo.
Well done dotty and french for holding onto the low weight on the morning of a fast that's great fingers crossed for a new low tomorrow.

postmanpatscat · 11/07/2013 12:22

Good luck to today's fasters, you can do it! Especially you awkward !

I did a zero fast yesterday, found it quite straightforward although I would have liked to go to bed about 1.5 hours before I did (DP has an exam today and wasn't ready to knock the last-minute revision on the head as early as I'd have liked...then he couldn't find his belt to wear today and next thing we know it's nearly midnight!)

I watched the fat, sick documentary on YouTube, it is interesting but I'd rather do 5:2 than live on juice any day!

TonytheFish · 11/07/2013 12:32

Talking about weight fluctuations, I have added my trending chart from The Hackers Diet log to my profile, and you can see, the red line is my trend weight, and the white dots at the bottom of the green lines, my actual, and you can see daily, how the white dots go up and down daily, but my overall trend is heading downwards.....

Hi - I'm new!
On my second FD today, first was Monday and I really enjoyed it, I saved my entire calories for one evening meal. So I did about a 20 hour fast, which felt fantastic the next day. Today, however, I'm struggling. It's not that I'm particularly starving, I just WANT something! The thing is I'm sort of frightened of awakening my appetite if I have a little something now. I've done everything I can think of, been out for a walk, tried to concentrate on something else, drank water and herbal tea but the craving isn't going away. In fact it's worse due to delicious toast aromas wafting round the office.
Any advice?

Thanks, and also this thread has been quite the inspiration so thanks for that too!
Vx

BsshBossh · 11/07/2013 13:06

vikkisue could you go for a walk or similar; keep busy with something that takes the focus off food?

HellesBelles396 · 11/07/2013 13:36

Thanks BsshBosh

I had a couple of spoons of yoghurt mid morning but didn't feel like finishing my lunch so probably balanced out

Drinking loads of water today!

Dotty342kids · 11/07/2013 14:00

vikkisue welcome to the thread! No advice other than sheer willpower I'm afraid as you've already thought of most of the things I'd normally do to distract myself.
Just tell yourself, one more hour, then when you get there, one more hour!!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 11/07/2013 14:23

My second FD today today, feeling very hungry but good. Loved the feeling I had the morning after. I don't drink tea or coffee but have discovered bouillon (sp?) has 12 Cals made into a hot drink. Helps me out.

vikkisue · 11/07/2013 14:25

Thanks for the replies, yeah I'm just gonna tough it out and feel virtuous later.

Cat98 · 11/07/2013 14:44

I'm angry with myself. Supposed to be an fd today but I cracked and ate half a large bag of Doritos with sour cream and salsa :( it's the first time I've caved on an fd!
It is time of the month so maybe that's why, I just felt irritable and like I HAD to eat junk.

Oh well I'm leaving it now today and going to fast tomorrow instead. Any motivational tips?

How's everyone else doing today?

Talkinpeace · 11/07/2013 14:46

Do not buy any more doritos : if they are not in the house you cannot scoff them

Cat98 · 11/07/2013 14:49

Ha true talkinpeace - they were left over from last weekend treat night though! I was saving them for Saturday. Grr.

Ok, back on it tomorrow!

jussey17 · 11/07/2013 14:51

I've been lurking for ages and actually fasting for about 3-4 months weight loss minimal and up 4 lbs this week so fairly demoralised and thinking of giving up.
I am doing couch to 5k too which is going ok and may explain weight gain, she says clutching at straws.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 11/07/2013 14:55

welcome vikkisue I drink a cup of chicken stock, the smell and taste tend to calm my hunger pangs more than miso soup.

awkward some days are just tougher than others, try and focus on how you'll feel when you succeed, did the miso help?

also sometimes I do a deal with myself...I can abandon teh fast if I swap it for another day....by thursday, when teh other day is Friday (i don't fast on weekends) i usually then revert back to original plan feelingbetter about it all!

I fasted successfully yesterday, started today thinking I might do 3, but free sandwiches at work were too tempting, but just ate 3 quarters and had a cup of stock, no breakfast so managed a 17 hour fast (2 coffees with milk though) also made banana and chocolate loaf last night (as well as lemon poppyseed and tea loaf the night before) and resisted all of it, and brought into work and still resisted! Grin

planning on a g&t or glass of wine for tonight though!

weighed in at 10 13 this morning, which is a definite 4 pound loss in 2 weeks back on strict 5:3 and just hoping this rate continues, but knowing how it works usually I will be just losing 1 pound a week.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 11/07/2013 15:02

welcome jussey could it be TOTM? i often gain around then and get massive carb cravings too, which obviously if I act on then I end up gaining, but it soon drops back to normal again, when you say minimal weight loss, how much?

how strict are you on fast days, do you know your tdee, do you stick to it on NFD's?

well done on couch25k, I did that a couple of years ago and it's great to see how your fitness can improve.

how much do you want/need to lose, are you doing fasting for health or just weight loss?

To be honest you've stuck 3/4 months which is great, it may just need some minor tweaking or re-framing. were you gaining before you started or maintaining?

EagleRiderDirk · 11/07/2013 15:14

Today is the second FD of my new schedule. Unfortunately I woke up at 2am coughing and have had little sleep after it and DS has decided that despite being very tired cruising around his cot and wailing is the way to go (I wouldn't mind but he's not even happy doing it!). So I'm knackered, full of headache and not feeling ideal. I'm not feeling hungry though despite planning a different FD dinner and going to the supermarket to buy it. Just sort of looking forward to later.

Tonight I am trying butternut squash pasta, arrabiata sauce and chopped up veggie sausages.

EagleRiderDirk · 11/07/2013 15:16

Oh, btw thanks mumsnet for sending me an email with a picture of gourmet chocolates. That really helps Hmm

Dotty342kids · 11/07/2013 15:43

Oh Eagle I feel your pain! Have some lovely, expensive chocolate tomorrow instead Smile

BetsyBell · 11/07/2013 16:14

Crystal I read your post at 5am this morning and forgot to say

WOOOOHOOOOO!

Fab stuff! Well done Grin

I'm not particularly impressed with my fast day - I did eat a small salad lunch so only ended up with 16 hours proper fast and I've just added a small ice cream to my fast day calories (only 150 cals, but still...)

I think what I'll do is have an early supper and then skip breakfast tomorrow to get the hours in at the other end of my fast day instead. I want the health benefits, not just calorie restriction.

After many months of this I'm still not happy with doing 24 hour zero calories, but I'm generally feeling pretty great so I'm assuming hoping I'm getting all the desired health benefits anyway. I generally do 19 hours zero fast then split calories between 2 meals, then 15 hours till breakfast.

Hello all

tip really interesting re Ramadan in Jeddah. I like how this woe is getting all sorts of cultural discussions going.

americastorturedbrow just want to say I like your name.

eagle my sympathies with ds in his cot - got two dcs myself hats off to you for your dedication with the LO - he is at the most exhausting stage it sounds like.

AFM an impromptu FD. Did 18:6 yesterday and it felt so right. Not difficult at all so decided to do another. Got to midday, had a cappuccino and just thought why not go the whole hog? It's been the easiest fast yet - following on consecutively from a mini fast which just goes to show how fasting begets a smaller appetite.

I had a glass of Kidz 5-a-day with koko coconut milk - 70 cals? Think its helped. Not sure supplements are necessarily god - there was that guardian article about how too much antioxidants are bad for you...

Xx

Hope I can report

somewherebecomingrain · 11/07/2013 16:30

Good not god!

vikkisue · 11/07/2013 16:47

Ok just to report, I've nearly made it! I had an OXO drink earlier, that was a life saver and also probably the tastiest thing ever to pass my lips! Not long til I can eat - go me!
