Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done all the losers Smile and all the successful fasters.

So I did another fast today, 3:4 for the second week. Feel pretty good despite no weight loss. Am now watching Nigel Slater, salivating at the food. Why am I torturing myself?

Lizzabadger · 19/07/2013 20:05

Flowers Wine to Bsshbossh headintheclouds naturalblonde and everyone who's lost this week.

HellesBelles396 · 19/07/2013 20:36

Ok. So I have had over 3000 calories today scarily, I was far more restrained today than I was this time last year on the last day of the school year. To stay on track for the week, I could eat 1000 calories tomorrow and 500 on sunday. Alternatively, I could eat normally tomorrow, sling in an extra fd on sunday (a good fasting day) and chalk today up to a huge pile of rocky road in the staff room and a mcdonald's lunch!!

Which is the best option?

sausages51 · 19/07/2013 21:01

head thank you don't want to jinx it! :-)

Had hardest fast day so far. Did a very resistance-based workout this morning with a new trainer so that might be part of it. But for the first time had just lost patience w the world by time I was giving the children supper, felt dizzy etc.. I need to see at least a NSv to keep this up!

Lizzabadger · 19/07/2013 21:57

Well done for getting through it, Thalia. I woke up so hungry today I didn't think I'd make it but it got easier and now it's over.

If the scales are fixed in my local Boots I get to weigh myself tomorrow for the first time in two weeks of 4:3 with absolute fasts. i have my fingers crossed for a 3lb weight loss.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Londonmrss · 19/07/2013 22:08

Hello everyone, please may I join you? I've just successfully completed my second fast day and found it significantly easier than the first. I was in an absolutely FOUL mood at the end of the first day. I'm 28 years old and I'm not sure how much weight I need to lose in total but I would guess about two stone. I've just bought some scales from Amazon so I will face my fear and step on them at some point soon. Plenty of my extra weight is baby weight (9 month old dd) but I haven't found the motivation and willpower to try and lose it before now. If I'm honest, the weight had been creeping on a bit for the year or so before I got pregnant. I keep catching sight of my reflection and wondering who that dowdy mum is... I am still breastfeeding but now only a couple of times a day and gradually reducing ready to go back to work in September so I don't think fasting will have much of an affect.

Enough about me, I'm going to read back a bit and try and get to know you all.

Hope you don't mind me joining.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 19/07/2013 22:09

Nt posting much as I'm 8hours behind you all but am keeping up reading, so well done to all losers this week....I'm midway through my 3rd fast of the week, aiming for another tomorrow as no fasting next week at all so I anticipate any weight loss this week will be partially put back on again but that's ok.

TiP is bossy but is also annoyingly right, and also (maybe weirdly) possibly gies out the most cyber hugs of anyone to offset the bossiness TiP?!

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 19/07/2013 22:17

Hello London, how're you? I've just joined too, and have done 2 Fd now. What days are you doing? Am planning on Mon and Thurs, but chucking in an extra one tomorrow as I want to enjoy the barbecue on Sunday Wink

headintheclouds · 19/07/2013 22:34

TIP TIP Hooray!!
I might be a little bit drunk TiP sy Grin

HellesBelles396 · 20/07/2013 06:13

So yesterday's blowout is making itself felt now. Grumpy, tired, weird taste in my mouth. I think I'll fast today.

swallowedAfly · 20/07/2013 08:06

morning. had cheesy chips and chicken wings last night as nothing in the house but weigh in at 10.2 again this morning. my alleged muscle and fat ratios have improved whilst away. supposedly i'm 27.5% fat now - i know home scales aren't massively accurate on this stuff but starting out i was 35% or thereabouts and it has gradually come down so whilst figures might not be exact the trend is itms. seem to recall 25-30% is not too bad and 20-25 is the good zone?

as to when will i fast - scary question! i may just wait till monday when ds will be at school and i have the breast clinic to keep me distracted.

AphraBehn · 20/07/2013 08:09

Morning all.

Official weigh in day is Monday but a sneaky peek this morning suggests I have lost 3lbs this week which makes 6lbs in 3 weeks. Even if I allow a bounce that's still pretty good (particularly after some of my NFDs!).

akarucker · 20/07/2013 08:22

So last week was the first time ever I tracked my TDEE on nfd. Only lost 0.5lb. That's disappointing, especially as I STILL haven't lost the Blushfull 10lbsBlush that I put on during my month off! Off on me hols next Saturday so was hoping to at least have lost that.

shelldockley · 20/07/2013 09:01

Yay! I survived my second fast day! I was all ready to give up on Weds after my first fast day left me with a killer migraine, but this thread really inspired me and I tried it again yesterday. I did it quite differently to the first one, I didn't skip breakfast, I had my usual porridge, soup for lunch, followed by a small amount of Green & Blacks and a snack of melon and strawberries, small sushi for dinner, plus 2 cans of caffeine free diet coke and lots of water.

Thank you for everyone's support and tips, I can't believe I gave it another go and survived! Thanks especially to ERD for the tip about salt. I made sure I had a salty dinner the night before, and with the fizzy drinks too I think that kept me headache free.

I know that's not an ideal menu, I did just under 600cals and only managed 14 hours complete fast, but I'm very happy to be headache free and the scales this morning say I'm down 2lbs. Even if that evens out to a pound a week I'd be happy and I'll try and improve my eating and fasting as I go. So thanks everyone for the support and tips!

HellesBelles396 · 20/07/2013 09:21

Well done Shell, I am on fast 5 (an emergency one following a blowout yesterdaay that has left me feeling like crap!) and had completely forgotten how low fat sushi is. I will totally be getting some today since I am over on protein but under on carbs this week. Thank you for mentioning it! :)

shelldockley · 20/07/2013 09:25

Mmm, sushi is lovely, the little snack packs are usually only around 150 cals!

HellesBelles396 · 20/07/2013 10:04

What's not to like?!

Gilbertus · 20/07/2013 11:18

Weighed Friday and quarter of a pound on. Not unexpected as all NFDs were greedy ones. Am suddenly very motivated to lose weight though and can see it's possible with two fds and moderate eating on other days. Wine is a problem as it's so hot and sunny we keep being invited round for drinks in people's gardens Smile
