Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

SaF I'm glad I'm no the only one who takes that approach to weighing!

Dotty342kids · 19/07/2013 12:22

WElcome back SAF, I was wondering only yesterday, how you were doing, glad you had a great holiday!
So, when you next doing a fast day? Get back to it huh? Smile

akarucker · 19/07/2013 13:05

Welcome back SAF We missed you! Well done on the loss. That's fantastic!

Loads of newcomers in the last couple of weeks, which is great to see. Some of us are still plodding along at a snail's pace trying to kick the bloody chocolate addiction but still here.

clarabellabunting · 19/07/2013 13:08

Hi all,

I started a thread on the main 5:2 board and only got one response so maybe you guys might have some advice for me?

Copy and pasted:
"I started 5:2 six weeks ago when I weighed myself and realised I was 10 st 5lbs and need to lose roughly a stone.

I have been sticking strictly to 500 calories on Tuesdays and Thursdays while eating normally on the other days.

After four weeks I decided to weigh myself and found I was still 10st 5lb. In the two weeks since then, I have been starting to worry that this WOE isn't doing anything for me. To be fair, I haven't found it very hard at all and can quite easily come in at 500 cals on fast days without much effort.

So, I weighed myself this morning after giving the WOE another 2 weeks and I am now 10st 6lb!

What am I doing wrong? I've been tracking my calorie intake on myfitnesspal so I know I'm not going over on fast days.

I'm also tracking on my non-fast days and find I usually take in around 1400-1500 calories when eating normally.

Should I be aiming lower on fast days?"

angelabbie · 19/07/2013 13:13

Hi

It looks as if you may be eating too little on your NFD have you checked your TDEE? There is a link at the top of this page. You can eat up to your TDEE on NFD or if you want extra at the weekends eat just under as I do. This may help.
Good luck

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 13:28

tryinghard2
do not worry about "putting it all back on" - in a week any you gain will still be fluid and undigested food. You need to stop trying to lose weight and concentrate on upping your exercise and your vitamin intake a bit, then when you go back to fasting your body will be ready for a kick.

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 13:30

TiP's TOP TIP OF THE DAY

When using MFP
overestimate the amount of EVERYTHING by 10%
and underestimate the calories burned from exercise by 20%

because 10% margin of error on food is small enough that TDEE can include wine, but just enough to make sure you are eating what you think

clarabellabunting · 19/07/2013 13:41

Apparently my TDEE is 1716... but I would have to FORCE myself to eat that much.

Is your fast day meant to be about 1/4 of your TDEE (in which case I should be aiming for 429 on fast days?)

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 13:46

clarabella
how tall are you to have that TDEE - and is that low or high exercise?

clarabellabunting · 19/07/2013 14:01

Low exercise (desk job), height 5ft 3, weight 146lbs, age 32.

BsshBossh · 19/07/2013 14:18

tryinghard yes, I had the 4 month long plateau. I changed nothing, perhaps even got a bit complacent some weeks, but as I was happy with the wait I'll stalled at (still nearly 30 lbs over my current weight but better than my original weight) I just continued on as usual. Eventually by a miracle it budged.

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 14:24

clarabella
hmmm, your best bet then is to go for high protein, low fat, high veg on eating days
because somewhere along the line, to have a BMI of nearly 26, you have been eating more than your TDEE on average ...

clarabellabunting · 19/07/2013 14:31

Talkinpeace - that's what I thought.

Maybe my TDEE is an anomaly. I have been used to not eating very much for quite a long time (I don't have much of an appetite) so maybe my body has got used to operating on a lower calorific intake than that TDEE calculator would give me.

And the weight I have put on, seems to have gone on very slowly over a number of years. It's not like I'm suddenly a stone overweight. It's been very gradual.

OK, so I'll try to go high protein and veg on NFDs and see if that makes a difference.

jussey17 · 19/07/2013 14:58

Haven't posted for ages as was 4 lbs up and demoralised and thinking of giving up. Now 5lbs up (about half total weight loss and I've been doing this for about 6 months). However very interested to hear stuff at the start of the thread about heat and weight gain and Bsshbossh'S plateau. FDs easy now but I do use them as an excuse to go a bit mad on NFD. Also I am doing couch to 5k which is going really well so feel more toned which may account for weight gain. I'm doing both for health reasons but would really really like to see some weight loss too as 75k and 5'5".

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 15:26

jussey17
but I do use them as an excuse to go a bit mad on NFD
you typed your own answer
you NEED to learn to eat less, but happily
and that means staying within your TDEE as much as possible.
I'm the same height as you and weigh 20kg less
NO MORE SNACKING

Monday = 500 calories
Tuesday = TDEE - 10%
Wednesday = TDEE - 10%
Thursday = 500 calories
Friday = TDEE
Saturday = splurge
Sunday = TDEE

then the weight will start to shift - but you HAVE to eat the right amount for your body - as you want it to be

Southeastdweller · 19/07/2013 16:35

Well done Bssh, head, natural, Hairy, dines, and clucking. How much is your total now Bssh? I think it's something like six stones?

What did you decided to wear tonight Melanie?

I'm one pound down so at a new all-time low. Want to post more about it but currently in Sheffield for the night and don't have much time. People here are so friendly and warm - in five minutes I was called 'duck' and 'love'! I forget how different some parts of the country are compared to that London. I quickly discovered an old-school bakery by the Crucible and think I'll be paying a return visit tomorrow...fasting either Monday or Tuesday. Quite full now and just having a salad for dinner.

Enjoy your weekends all and let's all try and get as much sleep as possible in this heat!

MissUnicorn · 19/07/2013 16:57

I just wrote a long message & my phone lost it. Angry

Thanks to all of you that have lost weight this week.

Thanks to Dotty because you could've been putting weight on these past 3 weeks but you haven't!

I've lost 1.8lbs this week. Amazing since I'm due on soon. I think the flat tummy probiotic sachets are doing their job Grin

Off out tonight, and had intended to be completely naughty today, but to be honest after my lose, I don't want to spoil it.
Please note though, this is before my first cocktail. Wink

RockChicken1 · 19/07/2013 17:31

Hi everyone hope you don't mind me joining this thread. I'm very new to 5:2 and today is my first fast day. Haven't found it too difficult although I'm quite hungry now! Planning to have most of my allowance at dinner, don't know if this is the best way to do it or spread it out through the day? Im trying to stick to 400-500 calories, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips for fast days?
For extra motivation I'm doing the diet with my dp. We could both do with losing a few pounds and hopefully it will be easier doing it together. My dp is a chef though so I think it will probably be extra hard for her being around food all day on a fast day!

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 17:35

Rockchicken
welcome aboard.
Doing 5:2 together is definitely the way to go
and if your better half is a chef then you can have fun with some of the recipes on the recipes thread - or even better add new ones

if you can, sticking with fluids and then a nice evening meal does seem to be effective
also if your DP is in the kitchen, mentally eating nothing at all is easier than eating a little bit

Dotty342kids · 19/07/2013 17:42

Aw thanks Missunicorn - enjoy those cocktails!

I've had a weird NFD today consisting of a fair bit of (picked this morning) strawberries and a sandwich / picnicky type lunch then my appetite's just disappeared. Had 3-4 dessert spoons of pasta bolognese which I made for the kids' tea and that's it.
However, am out for drinks with friends so am sure I will drink my way through the remainder of today's calories Grin

Enjoy your Friday nights 5:2'ers!!

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 19/07/2013 18:13

Weighed myself this morning after my 2nd fast and I've lost 3lbs! Grin
