The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I do not want to fast today. Been hungry since 5am. This is going to be a real test of will-power.

BsshBossh · 19/07/2013 06:34

3 lbs down this morning.

Since February 2012, I've lost 33.3% of my body weight. Hurrah!

Flowers to me Smile

akarucker · 19/07/2013 07:04

bssh brilliant! You are such an inspiration.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 19/07/2013 07:28

Second weigh in after 4th FD and 6 pounds down so pleased with that until I entered my info into the weight loss chart and realised how far to go......

Right, onwards and upwards downwards

ceebeegeebies · 19/07/2013 07:34

Morning all Smile

Quick question - have done a mini fast during the day then hit the wine later on? Do you get drunk quicker because you haven't eaten much during the day??

I was supposed to fast yesterday and managed to only eat a chicken salad at lunchtime, then me and DH (who was also fasting) caved in and decided to treat the DC to tea out as they had both had good achievements/reports etc so totally pigged out.

So, tonight, I am out on a hen do - no food, just drink - and am planning on not having any breakfast, a 300 cal lunch then maybe a bowl of cereal before I go out but I am concerned I am going to get very drunk, very quickly Hmm - any thoughts?

HellesBelles396 · 19/07/2013 07:35

I've decided that the weight loss without an accompanying NSV means I have probably been losing visceral fat and water. It was totm this week which would explain a large water loss and I have had a lot more energy with better moods (except on fd's!) which would tie in with visceral fat loss. If this is the case. I'm reallys pleased I've started to do something about my weight because visceral fat is toxic.

tryinghard2 · 19/07/2013 08:01

Itsaboat no downward trend for ages sadly - i do track and overall i havent lost anything for ages.

Even though ihave lost weight i feel like this was always going to happen, it wont work for me - its hard not to feel so negative and its silly because of how much ive already lost but right now i feel like im doomed to be fat forever. Tip im too scared to take a break i might put it all back on again!

headintheclouds · 19/07/2013 08:02

Morning all, well after my moan last week about putting on 2 lbs weight and feeling despondant , this week Im down 4lbs to a new low of 10 st !
So Ive had a look at my progress and thought Id share my stats .
Started 5:2 28 Jan.
28 Jan 11 st 2
27 feb 10 st 11.5
28 Mar 10 st 7.5
26 Apr 10 st 7.5
31 May 10 st 5.5
28 Jun 10 st 2.5
19 Jul 10 st .
Im sharing this just to high light that even though its been extremely slow with plenty of bounces up and down AND a couple of dreaded plateaus ,overall the trend is down.( only averaging 2.5 lbs per month). Its not a quick fix.
Ive always done 5:2 , upped the exercise recently and thrown in the odd 16:8 in the last month.
So 16 lbs off in 6 months, which is 10% of my body weight gone.
Started getting compliments ,down a dress size AND have bought a bikini for my hols ( havent worn a bikini in 16 yrs) .
Its a no brainer really isnt it!Grin
thanks to everyone on here for being so supportive.
and good luck all fasters this week.
Im at my first target today , on the way to next one of 9 st 7.

EagleRiderDirk · 19/07/2013 08:06

ceebee I got lathered one fast day with no food in my system. I wouldn't recommend it. Especially in this heat. Do yourself a favour and line your tummy!

helles thats a good conclusion!

So, 3 monthiversary results - Just over 44.5lb down. 11inches off waist. Am only 0.5inches of that wonder 50% waist to height ratio and have been stuck at 33in for weeks. However the horrible stomach underneath my waist is shrinking loads and that's far better. Sadly I am only doing a little dance in my head about this all, stupid weather meant next to no sleep for me. I'm crabby, tired, feeling stupid and have to deal with both kids with no planned activities today Sad. Time to dive into that peanut butter me thinks.

lizza don't worry, there's also sweets about too, but I lasted not having them either. Today may not be a good day for ignoring them though

EagleRiderDirk · 19/07/2013 08:07

Well done hitc

headintheclouds · 19/07/2013 08:10

tryinghard2 crossed post. You sound like me last week... It is hard not to feel negative isnt it when the losses are so small.Between those monthly increments that Ive posted up thread Ive weighed myself EVERY day which I know is daft and there have been alot of up and downs and not budging. And then out of the blue without doing anything different you'll get a hefty loss( thats been my experience anyway).
Keep plodding away and it WILL come off.Flowers to cheer you up!

Itsaboatjack · 19/07/2013 08:10

Well done Bsshh that's brilliant.

ceebeegeebies I would suggest to try and alternate one alcoholic drink with a glass of water.

HellesBelles do your scales measure visceral fat? Mine has come down to 5 now, it was 8 when I started, apparently between 0-10 is normal.

NaturalBlonde 6lbs already, that's a really great start.

Good luck all today's fasters.

headintheclouds · 19/07/2013 08:15

erd congrats to you too...44lbs in 3 months is flipping unreal/ fantastic weight loss... Thats 3 times what Ive lost in 6 months...

dont dive into the peanut butter.. Smile you might undo all the good youve already done

NotAsTired · 19/07/2013 08:19

Stayed the same. Hmm. I seem to be losing every other week at the moment. Hey-ho at least it's a downward trend.

head. Impressive statistics. Well done.

That's brilliant bssh and naturalblonde.

Cluckingmad · 19/07/2013 08:21

Hi all just checking in to let you all know that I have upped the calories on NFD's to closer to my tdee and have lost another 3 lbs which makes 7 lbs in 4 weeks I'm very happy and will continue this WOE for life Smile

HellesBelles396 · 19/07/2013 08:31

ItsABoatJack no but I had been surprised by how much I weighed despite being at a size I'd been at before. Also, I was looking online about how you could lose weight without losing waist and about patterns of weight loss and, the most likely reasons for losing 12lbs without losing inches from my waist:
Inches lost elsewhere - not the case I checked
Water loss - as previously mentioned totm began tuesday
Fat loss from other areas - so I looked up other areas someone of my weight with my previous diet might lose weight from and visceral fat came up.

Dotty342kids · 19/07/2013 08:40

WEll done itsaboat and headintheclouds, great losses from you both! I really seem to have stalled / plateaued / maintained for ages now and it's beginning to annoy me! Same low weight today as the previous three weeks.
Away for a couple of days this weekend but think I need to re-engage with MFP once I'm back and get on top of it all again.

Couldn't have breakfast this morning as nothing in the house to eat (kids scoffed last of bread / milk) but off fruit picking now so lots of raspberries shortly Grin

tryinghard2 · 19/07/2013 08:50

thanks everyone. I just need to stick with it. I've seen a lot of people have had weeks off, its probably a good idea but I'm too scared to put weight back on again! Is it Bsssh who had the really long plateau? Did you keep going as normal or did you change anything? I think part of it might be not eating enough on nfds, im going to go back to mfp and count carefully for a bit and make sure i eat enough.

MelanieCheeks · 19/07/2013 09:08

Stayed the same this week - not surprised and I'm OK with that. I'm maintaining justunder a bmi of 25, so any further losses will be slow. And I do enjoy myself on NFDs!

Very interesting article by Brad Pilon linked on the Facebook 5:2 group. He made some excellent points such as - IF should feel right. Work out what way suits your body. And it MIGHT not be right for you. And women shouldnt try to fast too much around those times of the month when their bodies are concentrating on other things (I'm paraphrasing wildly here....). A Monthly approach rather than a weekly one is good.

ceebee your tolerance to alcohol will be MUCH reduced if you try this after a fast day - either eat something more substantial and fast a different day, or really pace yourself tonight.

EagleRiderDirk · 19/07/2013 09:24

melanie great minds and all that - I was just about to post it here for people to look at:
www.niashanks.com/2013/07/intermittent-fasting-doing-it-wrong/
I found it very interesting too!

EagleRiderDirk · 19/07/2013 09:25

Oh, ignore the title too - makes it look a little inflammatory against IF and its actually not.

dines · 19/07/2013 10:14

Hello all done my second fast day yesterday.weighed myself this morning a and have lost a pound.i weighed myself after the first fast and was down two pound so have lost 3 pound this week. Hoping to lose the same next week. Feeling happy and looking forward to my next fast so I can lose more of this weight. Whos fasting today?

HairyPotter · 19/07/2013 10:27

3rd fast day yesterday so I weighed myself this morning. Another 1lb lost which brings my total for my first week upto 3lbs. Grin. I won't be expecting the same next week but another 2lb would be great.

Some fantastic long term losses on this thread! I am watching with interest. I would love to be able to post something similar by the end of the year.

Good luck to all today's fasters. My dds are hoping for lunch at the local carvery, it's a great feeling to know I can still have a decent size plate and not worry too much about ruining my diet.

swallowedAfly · 19/07/2013 10:27

hello and good morning Smile

back from holidays after an epic journey and a lovely time. couldn't resist getting on the scales even though i've travelled through the night so have been eating crap and drinking all night so it won't be a 'true' weigh in (as in jump on the scales quick after a pee and before you've even had a sip of water type weigh in). however i am pleased to find the scales say 10.2 even in such unlikely circumstances so i think that's less than before i went away so fingers crossed without a night of eating crap on a plane i've actually lost weight whilst away.

weirdly i felt really podgy and bloated whilst away in a way i hadn't here but presumably that's from wearing less clothes and being surrounded by 20something diving instructors and the like. anyway i am hoping if i can get back into the fasting breaking the ten stone barrier is not too far off.

hope everyone has been enjoying the sunshine and doing well with their weight loss. it would be literally IMPOSSIBLE for me to catch up on what i've missed so i shan't try and will just hop back in if that's ok?

NotAsTired · 19/07/2013 10:28

Interesting article. Funnily enough, after my last totm where I found fasting really really tough but I struggled through unhappily, I decided that I would not do 5:2 fast during that time but just take the week off but do a few 16:8 instead.

I also like the way he has the template. Makes sense to me. And basically he is saying make it work for you, listen to your body, and make it a positive experience. All good sound advice. And in fact, exactly what you long termers on here are doing. Smile
