The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Finished 2nd fast day and it was much easier than the first, but I think it has been down to being mentally prepared, and having better food to eat. Who knew ryvita was so tasty?! Anyway, the calorie count for today is 523. I am missing sweet stuff though, and my 9 calorie jelly was nice, but I could murder a 99 with a flake!

EagleRiderDirk · 18/07/2013 19:45

Oh no Bssh. I haven't personally but then I'm still fat, just less fat! Though I have to admit I said the same thing about Kate Middleton in the run up to the wedding so maybe I'm a meany too... Although I'm pretty sure her BMI wasn't at the higher end of normal before she dropped more weight.

dines · 18/07/2013 19:45

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 18/07/2013 19:48

Just looked on mfp and the scone alone was 250cals! Was the chilli con carne with rice?

EagleRiderDirk · 18/07/2013 19:48

Fast day almost over. I am having a 3 course meal. Couscous stuffed pepper for main, so starter was the couscous I had the allowance for but couldn't stuff! Dessert will be some strawberries with a little bit of choc ice cream. All under 400 calories today. And I haven't touched that certain item yet...

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 18/07/2013 19:50

Just looked on mfp- was the chilli cous cous the Ainsley Harriet one? How much of it did you eat?

BsshBossh · 18/07/2013 19:53

FD almost over for me too. A light veg and prawn curry for dinner when DH returns home. Holiday for a week from tomorrow so no fasting now until w/c 29th July.

dines · 18/07/2013 19:53

Yeah it was the ainsley harriey one, had 100 grams of the cous cous

NotAsTired · 18/07/2013 19:57

bssh. Yes I've had comments that are a bit Shock and Hmm in the past (about this time last year) when I had lost weight (4lbs lighter than now). Invariably it came from people who were overweight themselves. I put it down to the fact that you have taken control of your eating and weight and you have "moved on" and they haven't, iykwim. I hate to say it, but it's jealousy. That's your cousin.

I don't know about your mum but my Asian mum is never happy with my weight. If I am overweight she says you need to lose weight, think of your health yada yada and if I lose the weight she says oh look at you, you are so thin, don't lose anymore. Can't win. Grin

BsshBossh · 18/07/2013 20:00

mocnk Google "curly hair bob styles" and look at all the images - some lovely looks there. I like Rihanna's:

NotAsTired - can't win indeed!

angelabbie · 18/07/2013 20:14

Hi T and D, I defo think emotions are a little heightened on a FD. I have a daughter with special needs and have learned to trust my instincts. If something does not feel right stop it. I have this with GOSH and made the best decision ever for my daughter even though they were very miffed with me for making it!

BsshBossh
Yes, some people tell me I'm too thin.
The only ones I listen to are those who are thinner than me as they know of what they speak.
The rest are just jealous that I've found a way to enjoy life without being fat.

Itsaboatjack · 18/07/2013 20:22

Well done dotty on avoiding the ice-cream trap. I too managed to swerve a Magnum when my dd and my friend were having one.

Betsy, thanks for the earlier link to sports direct for the bikinis, I had been struggling to find one for my upcoming hols. I ordered two and they arrived today and the fit really well and look great, and...... they are a size 12. Grin

Spamfrit · 18/07/2013 20:44

Dilemma...sitting in a cafe and ask my dad to get me a white coffee (ie Americano with a splash of milk 25cal) he comes back with a latte (only guess 170cal probably more if whole milk).

It's a fast day. Do I act all spoilt and don't drink it and make him think I'm on some daddy diet. Or drink it which leaves little left to eat all day?

Talkinpeace · 18/07/2013 20:45

drink half of it.

Spamfrit · 18/07/2013 20:47

Faddy diet! Bloody auto correct

Spamfrit · 18/07/2013 20:57

Yes I stopped at 2/3rds. Found it difficult though

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 18/07/2013 21:11

Well after dreading today and having a bowl of porridge for breakfast, I ate nothing else until 4pm when dd1 made me a choc brownie and there was no way to refuse. So I had one Grin but I've had nothing else all day and haven't been hungry at all. Lots of water and tea as ever.

dines · 18/07/2013 21:59

gilbertus mmm chocolate brownies I love those. so looking forward to tomorrow gpin shopping so gonna get something healthy for dinner.. fish with cous cous and veg probably. Gonna get a tub of ben and jerrys for the weekend.mmmmmm

HairyPotter · 18/07/2013 22:32

3rd FD almost over. I came in at exactly 500 Shock probably couldn't have done that if I'd tried. Shred also completed.

I made the delicious Thai red curry from the recipe page with the tiniest amount of fragrant rice. A huge plateful for under 350 cals. 'Twas lovely as well.

I'm not finding it too hard at the moment. Not looking forward to going back to work next week. There's always tins of sweets on the go. and a Gregg's next door

Eagle what a fantastic loss! Well done. Sounds like you had a lovely day as well.

Lizzabadger · 18/07/2013 22:37

Brilliant nsv Eagle ! I don't suppose the sweets will have done much arm.

Yes I do need to know strawberry magnums today, Nurse - thank you. Tomorrow I will try to ignore their existence though, and the fact that Ben and Jerry's is half price in Waitrose.

12lb in one week is amazing HellesBelles!

Lizzabadger · 18/07/2013 22:41

Oops - peanut butter not sweets and you haven't even eaten it. Ignore me (too much wine)!
