The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

*the tops fit great once I found a toilet to slip into one. Der

BsshBossh · 18/07/2013 15:11

Eagle sounds like you're having a lovely day :)

mumofcrazynamedkids · 18/07/2013 15:51

bshh I just need a style that hides all the grey in my temples and hairline, which means fringe, which with curly ish hair isn't really great unless I want to straighten every day, so I end up with longish hair as I can leave it to curl in a naturally messy style, with the options for occasional straightening for a smarter look, but i do really fancy a change!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 18/07/2013 15:58

eagle way to go!!! well done you, and the shopping sounds fun too.

I noticed the breeze at lunchtime too, thank goodness!

Resse's peanut butter cups? I love as well as reeses nutrageous bars, but only for NFD's ! eat tomorrow, you'll be fine.

angelabbie · 18/07/2013 16:04

ER well done you and all hail the vest top. I am not ready for them yet, still in the billowy tops with cropped jeans. Leggings and me just do not mix. I hate them almost as much as I hate the taste of reeses peanut butter cups :)

EagleRiderDirk · 18/07/2013 16:06

The shopping was good, except I was meant to be shopping for OH's birthday and not myself! Though he is currently perving at me so he's getting some bonus Wink

mum No, actual peanut butter from Reese's. I'm hoping its the same as the cup filling. I can't even open it to smell or I will dive head first in.

EagleRiderDirk · 18/07/2013 16:08

Oooh, I like that cut Bssh

BetsyBell · 18/07/2013 16:09

Eagle WHOOOOOOOOOP!!!! I bet you look bloody brilliant Grin

And Bssh Love it! I bet you feel completely transformed now! No hiding! YAY

I do love NSVs Grin Grin

Psst mocnk [whispers] hairdye!

I'm ignoring all information about Reese's peanut butter, lalalalallaaaa, [fingers in ears] nothing to see here, no need to know about that sort of thing...

betsy i've been hair dying for years, but the grey is just relentless, and I think my long hair is getting ruined by too frequent dying, need a change, I've been every colour under the sun, but my natural dark brown is what suits me best, but even dyed that colour (I can't afford salons) it alwasy fades out to a lighter and slightly red tinged colour....oohh the trials of being a woman!

BetsyBell · 18/07/2013 16:37

I know exactly what you mean mocnk sigh, trials indeed. Men look so brilliant with their greying temples, damn them!

OP posts:
virginposter · 18/07/2013 16:56

mocnk I spent years and years trying to hide my grey and declaring I would never 'go' grey, but when we moved down to South West I'd finally had enough of the constand covering and all the angst about it. I'm now my natural grey and short and choppy and everyone says it looks great.
Even my critical daughter says it's a lovely colour and is letting the grey come through naturally on hers.
I think if you go grey when you're still relatively young (was 53 and yes that's youngish nowadays Hmm ) with a good haircut you can still look great.
Oh and as this is a 5:2 forum, still maintaining well Smile

ELR · 18/07/2013 17:03

shelldonkey hi haven't caught up on the thread yet since Wednesday morning but saw this and thought I'd post quickly then catch up! I suffer from migrains and bad headaches and find that it's the caffeine withdrawal that sets it off so I always make sure I have a coffee or tea at around 10am I then drink loads of water and have lunch around 1pm then dinner at around 7pm. When I started fasting in feb I was having black coffee in the morning then tea with milk after my lunch. But now I just have a few teas with milk from 10am onwards and my lunch around 1-2pm. Veg bouillon is def good for a salty drink and if I'm feeling really headachy I have half a banana and 2 dispersable asprins in very weak squash, this usually works very well and stops a migraine in its tracks!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 18/07/2013 17:12

hi virgin thing is I'm only 40, but had grey since 25, and it's only really very grey at temples and along hairline, most of the rest of it is still really dark, wondering about getting grey streaks put in to temples and leaving the rest.

anyway, sorry, that was totally off topic,

damn the office leaving person, just failed to resist the slice of very fattening Patisserie Valerie gateaux, but now feel quite sick, I know it's a NFD, but I should have said no, really wasn't the kind of cake I even enjoy, but I thought i would look churlish to say no. ggrrr hard to stand firm sometimes, but it makes me cross when I don't even enjoy it! i will however enjoy the large glass of cold white wine in 20 minutesGrin

Talkinpeace · 18/07/2013 17:21

I've had my grey hair stripe for over 20 years
gave up hiding it 10 years ago

fasting today : have a wonderful tub of soup for supper
might need a teeny ouzo to cope with the heat though!

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 18/07/2013 17:27

Hello, just checking in and will catch up with thread later.
It's coming up to lunchtime where I am and I'm on fourth fast day, started this on 9th July.

Weirdly, I have dropped loads already, clothes hanging off me. Was 157.4 lbs at start ( just before TOTM and having carbs galore inc beer every night for months) and am now about 151lbs, so nearly half a stone off.

I am feeling empty and shaky/sad but that is probably because I have just pulled my SN toddler out of hugely expensive play therapy because I didn't think it was working. :( I hate having confrontaions with professionals and am only just findng my feet as a first time parent of a child with SN so it was hard.

Emotional upsets are harder to deal with when fasting because emotions feel so much more raw - both the happy and the sad. Anyone else find this?

NurseEzzzaChapel · 18/07/2013 17:50

For some bizarre reason I'm watching one of those diet programs and they just showed a sample menu for a whole day on 1200kcal. It brought back memories as that's the only other weight loss method that has worked for me in the past. It looked so depressing! Living on that day after day for months on end... small wonder I only ever reached target once (12 years ago and only stayed there a few weeks) in my 16 years of trying! There's no way I'd go back to it after finding this WoE. What's more impressive to me is that I'm on a FD today and as I wan't that hungry at lunch time I've decided to skip lunch and I still think the 1200kcal sample menu looked mean.

I promised myself that if I got to my 30th birthday without any grey hairs that I would go grey gracefully and never dye my hair to cover it. Found my first grey aged 31 so I'm keeping my promise to myself.

TruckandDinosaurs I do find life's knocks harder to deal with on fast days, but once I noticed the correlation I found it possible to reason it out. Now when something happens that makes me want to cry and throw things I remind myself I'm probably feeling like this because it's a fast day and I'll feel better about it tomorrow. And I do feel better about it tomorrow.

Inlovewithchocolate · 18/07/2013 18:08

On the hair note, I have 50%grey and hate it. I dye it, wish I could go grey gracefully but will fight it all the way, I'm 50 by the way

Southeastdweller · 18/07/2013 18:09

Tip I'm amazed you're 48! I had you down as mid 30's from looking at your pic.

ERD Where did you find that peanut butter? On second thoughts probably best I don't know.

NFD here and today was supposed to be my second day of eating mostly plans and protein. So I was in M&S earlier buying a small pack of brown rice sushi when I was queuing and saw a certain food looking longingly at me...five minutes later I found myself sitting in a square having a deeply passionate session with the one and only Mr Percy Pig!
Oh well. I'm having a veggie curry tonight with no rice so that's OK.

MissUnicorn · 18/07/2013 18:17

LOL Southeast
I love Percy Pig too. Fast day for me too, and am about to make my halloumi salad. I was just thinking of you and Dotty so I thought I'd pop in and see how to everyone is getting on.

The weather is making it easy for me. I may switch to 4:3 while the weather is good.

EagleRiderDirk · 18/07/2013 18:18

southeast was one of those olde sweetie shoppe type places. Just happened to be walking past, caught the tub out of the corner of my eye and then somehow ended up in the shop buying it. I don't think I've exercised so little control since I started this woe. Mmmmm Percy Pig. I do love him so

HellesBelles396 · 18/07/2013 18:33

I have been grey at temples since I was 24. I'm now 35 and no longer dye it. I find not fastening it up looks better and, since I tend to have a bob, that works out well.

According to the scales, I have lost 12lbs in the past week. I neither look nor feel like it though and my waist is no smaller which is the measurement I am most interested in.

Dotty342kids · 18/07/2013 18:46

Oh Missunicorn stop with your tantalising halloumi talk Grin
Fast day here and survived trip to Lido with kids and them eating ice cream in front of me. Squash and lentil curry for dinner - NOW!

And HellesBelles that's amazing!!!!

HellesBelles396 · 18/07/2013 19:00

It doesn't make sense though - how could I lose that sort of weight but not lose any girth?

NotAsTired · 18/07/2013 19:12

NFD here today. Feeling much better today. Was sports day at school in the morning so was armed with water, sunglasses and hat. We decided that the children had had enough outdoor play today so in the afternoon we threw open all the doors but kept them out of the sun. Which meant i kept out of the sun too Wink.

Had a good healthy NFD with no snacks. I am loving not having the need to snack. Smile

BsshBossh · 18/07/2013 19:36

Had my first negative comment today regarding my weightloss. The comment (via Facebook): "You have thinned down too much, you are looking sick, put on a little bit" Shock That comment is from an obese cousin, all other comments have been positive. My mum (who is overweight) also thinks I look "too thin, don't lose anymore". Now, my rational side dismisses such negative comments as they don't correlate with what I see in the mirror, plus I'm BMI 24! But, irrationally, they bring me down a bit.

Have any of you had negative comments about your weightloss yet?
