Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

EagleRiderDirk · 17/07/2013 19:00

Lizza I'd love a thunderstorm here! Sod the washing Grin

ceebeegeebies · 17/07/2013 19:24

Quick question, is fizzy water better for fighting hunger than normal hunger? I keep seeing you all mention it and am willing to try anything that helps Grin

HellesBelles396 · 17/07/2013 19:45

Major stress this afternoon because, by the end of lunch, I was WAY over my tdee. Totally struggled for ideas for a filling 100 calorie evening meal bearing in mind that tomorrow is a fd.

So after tea, I was logging when I realised that my 2800 calories were on yesterday - yes, I was adding today's intake to yesterday's fast day!! As a result, I've just had a small bowl of caramel ice cream :)

In other news. My new (huge) sports bra has arrived - last time I did any exercise more strenuous than walking, I was size 14 and a D/E cup. Now I'm an 18/20 and a solid G. I have also bought the 30 day shred as my summer holiday challenge. That starts on monday Confused eek!

I am one week in and will be weighing tomorrow night. I have done three fd's thanks to sunday's detox from sugar saturday but the only change I've seen is that I'm waking up earlier and going to the loo more. It's nice to have more energy but it would be nice to lose some weight too!

alwaysanauntie · 17/07/2013 19:55

Lizza I'm seriously jealous, I gathered the washing in when I heard the thunder rumbling and saw the clouds gathering... not even a single drop has fallen :(, it's over 26 degrees inside (all door and windows open, plus we're sleeping on ground floor until we can move back up) and the baby keeps crying.

Just too damn hot and sticky!!! (Don't know hoe we survived a year in Queensland with 38 degrees and 90% humidity all summer long Hmm)

alwaysanauntie · 17/07/2013 19:57

In other news, my FD has turned into a mini-fast after this afternoon's magnum, tracker bar and now 3 oatcakes with my soup. Boo-hoo!

Hope others have done better than me Wink

Whitershadeofpale · 17/07/2013 20:20

First FD done. Was fine. I think usually I'll do them on a Monday and Thursday but once I decided to do it I just wanted to get stuck in. I've had a headache all day but think it might be the heat. Hunger wasn't bad.

BetsyBell · 17/07/2013 20:22

alwaysauntie I've done only marginally better - I've gone over (as I often do on my second fast of the week) probably by 200 cals BUT I have resisted the lure of the supermarket own brand magnums in the freezer! [superior face] Wink [remembers finishing off the last few squares of Green and Blacks, wipes smile off face] Blush

I ate my cold Glorious soup at 6pm and plan is to not again till tomorrow lunchtime to try and get the hours in. Tomorrow's not a fast day.

jimber · 17/07/2013 21:09

First time on. Have been finding this forum very helpful. Am on month 4 of the 5-2 diet. Have lost 14 pounds so far. At almost 70 years old, this is the first diet I have found that both works and gives me reason to believe I can use it for the rest of my life. When I was 42 years old, I weighed 166 pounds. I maxed last November at 216. Lost 9 pounds before discovering the 5-2 diet. Am now at 193. Heading back to 166. Hopefully by sometime next year!

mttum · 17/07/2013 21:10

ceebees not sure if fizzy water is more filling as such but I see it as a bit of a FD "treat", as it just makes a change from tap water. Not as much of a treat as other fizzy drinks I could think of (Wine) but every little helps Smile. I buy the cheapest possible, about 20p for 2 litres from the main supermarkets or aldi. Does anyone else find it "filling"?

tryinghard2 · 17/07/2013 21:22

Weight loss has slowed - i think im eating too little on nfds! Never thought I'd say that!

alwaysanauntie · 17/07/2013 21:37

Ha ha betsy enjoy that smug feeling!

I had another 3 oatcakes after last post, not due to hunger but have a spanking headache and i usually try to eat my way out of them... Am now having a bath and going to wash/dry hair & see if that helps.

Welcome jimber glad we've kept you going, well done on your loss, keep it up :)

Danceasifnooneswatching · 17/07/2013 22:07

1st fast day doneSmileSmile

Lizzabadger · 17/07/2013 22:13

Please can people stop talking about Magnums!!! (until tomorrow). I do NOT need to know that Lidl do a strawberry version...

NotAsTired · 17/07/2013 22:18

A lot of us having headaches today. Most probably heat related, or rather mugginess related. It's quite oppressive here.

Was it just people on fd who got headaches? Do you normally get headaches? Did anyone on nfd get a headache today?

My body is not coping well with the heat. My headache has come back. My feet are swollen. I have heat bumps all over my hands. And I ave heat rash [sigh]

Weekipper · 17/07/2013 22:23

Right 5:2ers! I've got and read the book; watched the Horizon programme and DH has been 5:2ing since January and lost over 12kgs. I need to lose at least 12kg too but I need help.
I've tried 3 fast days so far and I just end up giving in, and worse still for the last week have been mindlessly eating all evening. Is there anyone who faltered in the beginning but just sorted themselves out. I worry I'm too food obsessed for this WOL. Hmm

ceebeegeebies · 17/07/2013 22:23

I have had awful headaches on my last 2 FDs which I have put down to the heat and not drinking enough...been fine on NFDs so am sure it is related!

Talkinpeace · 17/07/2013 22:26

Weekipper
WElcome aboard.
You need to start planning.
First off, do not buy the junk that you have grazed - let the cupboards empty
Second, plany your meals for the week. Buy that food, nothing else and STICK TO THE PLAN.
Third, each time you walk into the kitchen, stop, count to ten and ask yourself if you actually NEED to eat that thing and if you want to, why do you want to.
Making fasting work involves self discipline and control.
Learn that and all else follows

Weekipper · 17/07/2013 22:33

Thanks Talkinpeace! Luckily I've just moved so cupboards aren't well stocked and now I'm not going to fill them with nibbles.
Will fast tomorrow as DH fasts Thurs and Mon.

Breadandwine · 17/07/2013 23:04

Lovely to see so many newcomers! Welcome to you all - you're in the right place!

kipper I began this WOL 17 months ago by eating 1200 calories (so, half my normal allowance) on two days a week - and I still lost weight.

This, I think, was because I found I examined my portion sizes more closely, went down to a smaller side plate instead of a dinner plate, put less on my fork and ate more slowly.

Eventually, after the Horizon programme, I went down to a proper 5:2 and a couple of months later I began maintenance - after losing about 10kg.

HTH.

One other thing to recognise is that snacking will not assuage hunger - instead it will stimulate it. So, if you feel hungry, don't eat anything, rather, find a drink that you really enjoy - with me it was black filter coffee, now I swap between cold and warm water - and spoil yourself in that regard.

ATB, B&W

Gilbertus · 17/07/2013 23:07

a terrible day foodwise. actually too embarrassed to list what I've eaten. I've drunk almost a bottle of wine as well (we had friends round but still...)

FD tomorrow and I am dreading it.

mttum · 17/07/2013 23:15

Wow, how did I miss THAT on Horizon? "Diet: A Horizon Guide", in 7 parts on YouTube. By turns angry, puzzled, amused and outraged, I was always gripped by this programme. Anyone else seen it? I would certainly suggest it as very interesting viewing for anyone on this thread. First part is here
