The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

FD here for me!!!

Blimey it is hwatttt!!!!!

I was just wondering am I the only one doing ADF???

I took the opportunity today to take some side on photos of myself. I have a very warped perception....either that or my mind hasn't caught up.

In my head I look a lot bigger than the photos show?

First FD and I've been on my feet all day! Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be I'm usually pretty sedentary at work!!

Whitershadeofpale · 17/07/2013 13:24

Not too bad so far, just a bit of a headache. The fizzy water has helped with the hunger and i've just had another coffee. I'm finishing work early today so will probably have an early dinner about 5.30 and then an early night I think.

Talkinpeace · 17/07/2013 13:28

monster
gissa look then ....

I should have fasted Monday but failed.
should probably have fasted today but its too hot.
will go and buy some tubs of soup and be strict with myself tomorrow.

Spamfrit · 17/07/2013 13:30

Hello all. I've been lurking for a few weeks now. Loving the thread it keeps me in the zone.

This is week 4 for me and I have lost 4lbs. I'm 5'9 and 12 stone 10. Trying to shift the pregnancy tummy. Have a gorgeous son 4 months old .

This is totally a good woe. I love the flexibility and the realisation that I don't need 3 meals a day and high calorie snacks and alcohol. Not everyday anyway....just weekends!

somewherebecomingrain · 17/07/2013 13:37

Impromptu FD here. I think my bod is saying go for it. It will tell me to stop at some point however.

Just had a small latte so far. Prob about 150 cals at least. But nothing else. Got soup and a ready meal for later.

BsshBossh · 17/07/2013 13:43

Welcome Spamfrit (oh I love spam fritters, haven't had them in years).

Gosh, it's sooooo hot and I've got some kind of "summer cold" which is making me feel achy. Going away on holiday (Suffolk coast) on Friday so doubt much IFing will be going on on the week away and of course it's the school holidays too and I am in sole charge of DD. She's booked into a few gym and drama camps so I will still manage to IF.

Okay, ramble over. Too hot. Need a shower then back to work (from home!).

dines · 17/07/2013 14:03

So on the maintaining note..once I get there... do u still do the fast days as normal? I dont understand how ud be able to maintain.

NameoftheRose · 17/07/2013 14:12

Second fast day went well. I did feel hungry in the evening, but my previous experience with 'hard-core' (thanks Tortoise) fasting meant that I knew I could easily survive it. Drank lots of fizzy water with ice all day. Lots of loo visits but I expect my kidneys felt the benefit.
It's been interesting (to me) that because I regularly used to do 24 hour no food or drink fasting (idiotic religious reasons), I had a psychological advantage. I think hunger feelings can make us feel almost panicky 'got to get calories, death is close' kind of thing.

Also, after going 24 hours with no fluid, all you crave is water, whatever the outside temperature. And when you finally get some it is delicious.

Talkinpeace · 17/07/2013 14:17

dines
I fast just like all of you - but I tend to allow 600 calories in my meal - and eat right up to my TDEE most days and over it at the weekend - then again my TDEE is only 1500

TigerSwallowTail · 17/07/2013 14:26

Hi all, thanks for the welcome Smile, gosh this thread moves fast! She's my second dc, I've got a 6 year old son too, I wasn't able to breast feed this time though so I'm just bottle feeding. No photoshoots either :o haha, I've been avoiding any kind of camera as I've been self conscious about my weight, I had spd while pregnant and was on crutches so couldn't get up and about as much and put on quite a bit of extra weight. I've been having a lot of unintentional fast days as I've not had the time to eat so I'll probably end up eating more by following the 5:2 as I'll be making sure I eat all my calories on non-fast days, but I'm going to try and stay flexible and not be too strict at first as it's still early days post-partum.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 17/07/2013 14:28

monster we can't see your pics, do you want to share?

mumofcrazynamedkids · 17/07/2013 14:45

thank goodness.......that the work biscuit box have changed from their usual all butter shortbread fingers to some viennese type fingers - which I hate, I just swerved by the biscuit box slappedwrist as a sudden desire for sweet and carby almost overtook me! phew, close call!

spamfrit welcome, good steady start, it is a great WOE, I love the simple balance of it.

bsshh suffolk coast hols sound lovely, hope you're feeling better for then, I have a cough/sore throat type thing sort of in the background, haven't been ill since I started fasting last august, so hope like everything else this will disappear before it takes a hold!

angelabbie · 17/07/2013 15:01

Tiger, I had spd too and was on crutches for six months and my son is now 2nhalf. I have only now started to try and get the baby weight off so its fab you have started already. Go easy on yourself and ease into it.

Good luck.

T

monster54 · 17/07/2013 15:58

Sorry guys piccies were only for my benefit.

I've been intrigued as to progress we don't have a full length mirror at home so been a while since I've seen my full self!

I'm looking to do some more in 4 week stages see how things progress!!!

BetsyBell · 17/07/2013 16:18

Tip Your tdee is tiny, how come? [nosy]

OP posts:
Talkinpeace · 17/07/2013 16:29

Betsybell
8 stone 10 and age 48 basically. That and when I'm not at the gym I'm at the computer. If I added back in all my gym visits it goes up to 1900 : but then I'm tempted to eat that much even on non gym days .... so I work roughly to the lower figure

BetsyBell · 17/07/2013 16:38

Of course - it's the tiny weight that makes the tiny tdee Tip - sorry, brain has melted in the sun.

I should probably recalculate mine (not that I calorie count).

Tiger It sounds like you're veering towards 5:2 anyway but please make sure when you do eat it's healthy if you can, give your body lots of nutrition to repair itself with. Apols if this sounds preachy but I had horrible problems after failing to eat properly after my first!

dines · 17/07/2013 17:21

talkinpeace thanks for that..wud I be able to maintain if I done 2 fast one week and one fast the other and so on. Is there anyone else maintaining at the moment?

Talkinpeace · 17/07/2013 17:47

lots of us - we have a thread where we mutter among ourselves - come and join us

NotAsTired · 17/07/2013 18:13

Another fd over. I got a bit headachy but more so to do with the heat. I was crammed with 700 other people watching a school play in a overheated hall and then outside play the rest of the afternoon. The heat was palpable. I like the heat but not when I am working. Felt much better after getting home.

I was lazy and had a m and s feel fuller longer meal, some watermelon (unfortunately forgot to weigh it - doh) and some chocolate and a cup of tea. Still think I am within 500 calories though.

Hope everyone else had a successful fd and NFD.

BsshBossh · 17/07/2013 18:19

Although, dines, some of the maintainers on the maintainers thread are trying to lose again :)

Talkinpeace · 17/07/2013 18:23

Bsshbossh
Indeed true.
As with newcomers, set a small target and attain it.
Some of us on reaching our grand targets realised that we could easily lose a bit more while still looking lean rather than scrawny so have set another little target.

dines · 17/07/2013 18:23

Where will I find that thread ?
