Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm going to go back and read other posts in a second, but first I want to know if BetsyBell is fasting today?

If not, Betsy, please have a slice of my delicious freshly baked Humble Pie. You were totally right; I dropped 4 of the 5 lbs I was whining about on Monday, after two decent fasts.

Of course, now my new scales are measuring 3 lbs over my old ones, but I stood on both a million times to ensure accurate scientific results, so whatever the actual number, it's definitely 4lbs down from Sunday evening. Thank you thank you - in my head, it's your reassurance that has caused the loss.

Emmabryant123 · 18/07/2013 06:00

First fast day today. Leaving for work in 30 mins,
Not brave enough to go 24 hours yet so had breakfast, weetabix, 150ml semi skimmed milk, one tiny fin size banana.
Dinner is a tin of chicken noodle Heinz soup when I get home which leaves me at 435 calories.
So will have a 10 cal jelly pot plus maybe some raspberries or blackberries for dessert, or maybe two squares of chocolate lol .
Taking no food to work so I can't eat, so 6:00am-6:00pm no food.
Taking a litre of frozen water to work with me today.

I plan to always fast Thursday and Monday
Friday- normal eating
Saturday - what ever i want to eat, a drink, and dessert
Sunday- normal eating plus dessert
Monday- fast
Tuesday- normal eating
Wednesday- normal eating
Thursday- fast

SquidgyMummy · 18/07/2013 06:14

4th FD.
Had been feeling hacked off as was snacking etc (because of period and general tiredness) and obviously no weight shifting and pounds creeping on. So had a week off, then MIL had DS so i could go swimming which kick started my metabolism.

Weighed self this morning, 11stone 12.5 so have lost almost 6 lbs since starting just over 2 weeks ago, so that is a good result for me.

Certainly don't want to wish away the summer so will just keep the weight loss ticking over, till DS starts school sniff in september and I can hit the gymn properly.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 18/07/2013 06:15

2nd fast day today-a but worried as I'm out all day so not sure how I can eat ryvita and cottage cheese in my car without making a big mess! No slim a soup without a kettle etc. Maybe I should see this as a positive? More to eat later?!

BetsyBell · 18/07/2013 06:28

tortoise Grin hooray! And that is why I love this WOE. You can take a week off and repair the 'damage' so quickly.

I must remind myself of this for my upcoming holiday...

Lots of new starters. Good luck to you and check in here when you need a bit of support. I couldn't have done the first few without these threads.

NFD here but not breaking my fast till lunchtime.

macca have you got time to hard boil an egg before you go? I've found it to be the best emergency stand by food to have to hand - very filling and satisfying.

OP posts:
tryinghard2 · 18/07/2013 07:30

WHYYYY I'm just bouncing around! Nothing's moved this week at all, what is going on? I'm in the dreaded plateau. Did any of you do anything to start it up again? I know some of you just kept going and eventually it started again, but I dont have any faith it would be like that for me :(

thaliablogs · 18/07/2013 07:30

Ate about as much as I wanted yesterday, including a small bowl of ice cream after supper. Mfp has it at 1600 calories, maybe I am underestimating the size of things? I did weigh eg the brown rice I had for lunch, but didn't weigh the chicken and mushrooms I put with it from the children's supper the night before. Maybe I'll try weighing everything! But surely I cannot be out by 700 calories?

Anyway scales haven't moved. Will give it a few more days and put in a great workout today.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 18/07/2013 07:47

Thalia if I don't have any wine then my normal day of eating whatever I want probably comes in around that too. I'd hate to advise you to eat past the point of comfort, so I think maybe you're just someone with slow but steady loss? 1 lb a week is about what I lose generally.

Actually I have been thinking about this and just how half-arsed I am. I started on 4 May. That's ten weeks. I have had two weeks of 6:1 (and one of those was VERY indulgent due to lots of work functions) and one week off. So that's only 7 weeks of proper 5:2. I don't calorie count on NFDs, I don't exercise except weekly fencing (and I miss that sometimes), I drink too much wine and eat a lot of cheese. And I had just weaned DD2 when I started, meaning my calorie expenditure was about to drop drastically. Oh, and my BMI was only just tipping the overweight category.

And yet, I have lost 9 lbs.

That's astounding, actually.

EagleRiderDirk · 18/07/2013 08:00

thalia I'm the same as tortoise, if I don't eat junk or have wine my days (even with a dessert) will come to about 1400. This woe isn't a quick fix for most people, and you seem to be bang on for the 1lb a week average.

postmanpatscat · 18/07/2013 08:12

Hello....broadband issues at home and end of term madness have made it difficult to get on MN but I've been unobtrusively cheering you all on!

Well done tortoise sounds to me like you have the perfect recipe for success!

mttum that programme sounds interesting, will have a look when he pace of life slows down a little.

Good luck to today's fasters, keep drinking!

My 6:1 has turned into about 28:1! However, despite very limited exercise cos it's too hot I am still only 1lb over my lowest ever weight sinc starting 5:2 in Feb, and I'm fine with that because that was the morning after my 10.5 mile run!! Not sure what I'm doing right, but it is working.

I have nothing with me for breakfast or lunch, so might fast until I eat out tonight...but then again if someone brings me in an end of term box of chocs I might not!

postmanpatscat · 18/07/2013 08:14

Sorry about typos Blush

Cat98 · 18/07/2013 08:18

I've plateaued this week - but that's fine, I have been drinking a lot of wine because its been so sunny So that could well be why!
Second fd of the week today. I'm also off the wine completely for a week (apart from Saturday when I'll allow myself one large glass).
Good luck everyone fasting today!
I'm finding the fasts fine again now - had a wobble last week when it was totm...

BetsyBell · 18/07/2013 08:20

Hey, nice to see you PPC! 10.5 mile run? In this heat? [faints]

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 18/07/2013 08:21

cat98 I like to think of it as maintaining rather than plateauing! And if you can maintain while drinking lots of wine then you're clearly doing something right :)

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 18/07/2013 08:28

Boiled eggs now done and in lunchbox- thank you Betsy! Are they really only 15 cals each?

thaliablogs · 18/07/2013 09:07

No, a boiled egg is about 80 calories (large egg). Sorry!

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 18/07/2013 09:10

Hmm Bloody my fitness pal! Have just pulled into my patients village and someone is cooking bacon butties at the bakery. Torture!

BetsyBell · 18/07/2013 09:12

Thalia's right Macca but it's a very substantial 80 cals and one egg goes a long way! Just think how good about yourself you're going to feel when you don't have a bacon butty... (I know, it's a tough ask, but it's worth it!!!)

OP posts:
Beachcomber · 18/07/2013 09:15

FD for me today. I don't seem to have lost any weight since starting a couple of weeks ago but I think that might be because I don't have a lot to lose, am nearly 40, lost a few kilos before starting fasting and have upped my workouts (sore quads today!).

I seem to be maintaining the loss I made before fasting and I'm hoping once my body gets used to the harder workout that things will shift. I'm not in a hurry and also doing this for the health benefits and NSV of my clothes fitting me properly again.

Also since it has been hot I have been doing less cardio than usual (and i don't do masses normally).

Good luck fasters and don't go crazy nonfasters!

MelanieCheeks · 18/07/2013 09:21

I suspect it's one egg white which is 15 calories. Or possibly one ounce of egg? (Who weighs their eggs?)

Fasting today, and may have to brave those green IKEA cakes again, as I'm meeting the friend who's supposed to lend me the Daphne-from-Scooby-Doo costume. Except I saw on facebook last night she was asking if she'd lent the ginger wig from the outfit to anyone.....so I'm guessing I may need to rethink. Fancy dress party tomorrow night - TV and film theme. Any suggestions?

Whitershadeofpale · 18/07/2013 09:21

My first FD was yesterday and I last ate at 6. Is it OK to eat this morning or should I wait until lunchtime? I don't actually feel that hungry so waiting would be OK.

BetsyBell · 18/07/2013 09:24

Whiter The longer you wait the better the benefits for your body! If you don't feel hungry then go with it for a while. I also last ate at 6pm yesterday (fast day) and am planning to hold out till lunch. Coffee is helping... Grin

vikkisue · 18/07/2013 09:27

Arghhh! really going to have to stop weighing myself everyday! fast day yesterday and only lost 0.1kg. When on my first fast day this week I lost 1.5 kg overnight... I'm scared that this means I will easily gain back the weight over my non-fast days and lose nothing this week.

Right... my thoughts are... 1. Perhaps it will take a couple of weeks to find my stride (only on my second week and fourth fast). 2. I shouldn't eat pasta on my fast days (if at all!) as although I'd counted all my calories into my one evening meal yesterday, it was pasta and tomatoes and veg. I think I'm very carb-sensitive SO perhaps it's time to hang up my pasta pan. 3. Stop weighing myself every day (sometimes multiple times a day)... bit addicted. 4. maybe try a few 16:8 days too.

Anyway I feel pretty good so that's a bonus. I'd just really like the WOE to work I'd like to make it a permanent thing and I really really want to lose some weight!

I'm so pleased for this thread though... it's extremely inspirational and helpful

Vx

BetsyBell · 18/07/2013 09:27

whiter Just saw that's it was your first fast - just be careful about what you do end up eating, I found breaking my fast with carbs made me feel really wonky in the first couple of weeks. Of course not everyone feels that way but if you do don't worry too much. :)
