The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

dines there are a few maintainers here (and on the Facebook group I'm on) who continue to be strict about the 2 fast days whilst eating more on NFDs (or more than 500 cals at the end of a FD) to ensure they don't lose. Once you reach goal weight again - and you will! - you can stick to two fasts so that the rules remain the same for you and you continue to maintain and not gain.

I operate best with self-imposed rules so that's my plan when I reach my new goal weight.

angelabbie · 16/07/2013 20:47

oh gawd, hope I did not offend anyone, I forget my sense of humour can be a little risqué sometimes.

Angelabbie this is Mumsnet!! I think the easily offended run away pretty sharpish Grin

Southeastdweller · 16/07/2013 21:06

missunicorn I'm also intrigued about your halloumi salad. I just looked at the packet of my lighter pack of it and it's 244 cals per 100g!

alwaysanauntie · 16/07/2013 21:25

angelabbie and ERD didn't offend me, just made me laugh a lot!

Forgot to say earlier am loving the before & after pics, need to do something similar as last time i seriously made an effort to loose weight it was because of a hideous photo on Facebook with my gut bursting out between the buttons of my shirt :( anyway, am 2 stone lighter now than i was then, just another 2 to go :)

aka just wanted to say am like you in that i don't want to feel deprived on this woe. So yesterday i fancied an m&s filled chocolate muffin (400 cal!) so i bought one but had porridge for breakfast (260 cal) a salad for lunch (275 cal) and a pear for afternoon snack. In the evening i was watching a program on bbc1 with Gregg Wallace about fish & chips so sent dh out for that but got a small (800 cal according to mfp) didn't eat it all as i was quite full & just being greedy! No alcohol though :( i think as long as you learn to balance it (am still learning myself) you don't need to feel deprived on nfds.

Now, i have 50 cal left on my fd... Shall i have 2 squares of galaxy choc, a tropicana ice lolly (home made - brill ikea plastic lolly molds) or bank it for another day? Hmmmm...

mttum · 16/07/2013 21:28

harryhausen, hello and welcome Smile

The simple answer to your question is, yes it does get easier. That's not to say there won't be days when you feel like gnawing your own arm off, and maybe days when for one reason or another you don't make it through a fast day, but overall, it gets less fearsome. Remember you can swap fast days round, put more or less in from one week to another, etc etc.

Loads of ideas and great support on this thread . Good luck with it! Grin

SilkySocksSinkShips · 16/07/2013 21:38

Haven't posted for a while but now in my 4th week of fasting so..day 7. I don't own scales so no idea how much I've lost. I was 10st 13 before and plan on weighing myself after the second fast day of this week.

I know I've lost weight, happily between boobs and stomach but also boobs, my bras are getting big on the cup!

I've also taken the advice of working out on my fast days - just finished a weight workout - determined to lose the stubborn layer of fat below the belly button!

Hope all 'newbies' are finding it OK :)

NotAsTired · 16/07/2013 22:17

angelabbie. Absolutely not offended at all Grin

peplum I like names with meaning - would love to find out why everyone is called what they are called but I think that's a whole other thread for chat.

DS is 5 years old. Adorable but he's a bit of whirlwind. This evening I said "don't forget I have to do my exercises tomorrow" and he said "I can't wait to climb on you" with a cheeky grin and a glint in his eyes. Hmm

Talkinpeace · 16/07/2013 22:32

HarryHausen
welcome - it does get easier

says she who has UTTERLY failed this week
but then the place I was working today had not seen me for 6 weeks and commented on my weight loss
and I'm supposed to be maintaining Grin

slightlyroundthebend · 16/07/2013 22:51

Hello all, New to this thread and after some tips...I tried the 5:2 but gave up after only losing 1.5lb in 3 weeks. I think I must of been doing it wrong, I didn't know this thread existed or would of come for help.

Well I'm desperate so I'm going to start again with your advise.

Firstly alternate fasting, do you do one on one off or can you fast on say a Mon and thurs or would it scew results?

Do you tend to use all your fast day calories in one meal and if you do what's best breakfast, lunch or dinner?

I really want this to work this time any advice for nervous newby very welcome :)

Itsaboatjack · 16/07/2013 22:51

How are my fellow fasters doing? Today went ok but I'm very headachey tonight, don't know if its the fasting or the weather?

Ezza good to hear things are going well.

dines I'm sure you'll be back into the swing of it soon and back to your goal in no time.

akarucker · 16/07/2013 22:58

NSV - sister hadn't seen me for a few weeks. I'm actually at the same weight as last time I saw her, but first thing she said was how much I must have lost because my legs looked so much slimmer (was wearing leggings). I haven't taken measurements but NSV are enough!

virginposter · 16/07/2013 23:18

NotAsTired my name is simply what it says - I had never ever posted on a forum anywhere before 5:2, hence virginposter Smile

MissUnicorn · 16/07/2013 23:46

Dotty & Southeast 53g of halloumi (It's full fat and I weighed it grilled) is 170 calories. It was 3 medium-ish slices After I grilled the slices, I tore them into chunks and mixed it in the salad so I got a bit each mouthful (yep I'm a greedy one) Blush. The salad was under 50 calories for well over a 100g. Southeast even if you decided to have a full 100g of your light one, you'd still be able to have loads of salad... In fact, now I think about it, on Thursday I'm going to have more cheese, and a couple of Ryvita slices instead of pitta bread! Grin

Harry it does get easier! Thanks for completing your first fast day.

Well done fasters! Gonna exercise and go to bed, night all

CrystalDeCanter · 16/07/2013 23:52

Hello Harry and other newbies. Yes to it getting easier - never easy mind you (not for me yet anyway).

angelaabbie your pics are amazing. Such a difference in toning - have you been exercising madly too??? Well done.

I can't decide whether to fast or not today - it's 8am here (oz), I'm not really hungry, but didn't eat much yesterday (NFD) and wonder if I'll be ravenous by lunchtime and it'll all fall apart and I'll be better off fasting tomorrow. Hmmmmmmm....

NSV - I'm up another notch on my belt. Woo hoo.

TigerSwallowTail · 17/07/2013 00:46

Hi, I've started the 5:2 diet this week, I've just had a baby and have now gotten to the 6 week mark so am keen to shift the baby weight.

Breadandwine · 17/07/2013 01:47

Welcome Tigerand slightlyroundthebend (and any other newcomers) - you've come to the right place!

Most of us started off with three small meals on a FD, then gradually moved to just one meal in the evening - it's a lot easier.

ADF = fasting every other day, but not many of us do that, most generally stick to 5:2. And Monday's and Thursday's will be fine.

Good luck to you whatever you do - you'll soon find your preferred way!

Smile
Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 17/07/2013 01:50

When my height was accurately measured a couple of years ago and I discovered I was half an inch shorter than I thought I was (that's a lot when you're just over 5 feet 1), my first thought was 'Bugger, my BMI just went up Grin

I caved and bought new scales yesterday. I was sick of standing on and off my scales five times and then taking an average of the result. And, inevitably enough, I "gained" 1.1kg. I made DD1 stand on both sets of scales as well and the difference was about the same, so it's definitely right. Booo hiss. Oh well! Betsy, though, I have to tell you that after Monday's fast I was 2 lb down Tuesday morning, so I do have faith that you will be right about this weight coming off faster.

MrsArch when I said upthread about 140 cals for two skim coffees, I mean full lattes. So that's basically two cups of skim milk with a shot of coffee in. That is what I live on until dinner on FDs, because it's low GI and helps fill me up.

Hello to the newbies! Six weeks post partum is awfully ambitious, Tiger , I always find I can eat my own weight in cats for at least the first six months. But I'm not big on willpower.

CrystalDeCanter · 17/07/2013 04:30

Hi Tiger welcome to 5:2, obv it's utterly up to you what you do with your own body but for me the thought of getting my head around starving myself when I had a small baby would have been a step too far. I do like this woe but I do get quite stroppy on a fast day, and that's without having to deal with a teeny weeny adorable baby. Are you breastfeeding? I may have been one of the lucky ones but I found I could eat what I liked and still lose weight whilst I breast fed. It was only when I stopped that the kilos piled on again.

It's really none of my biz tho, so welcome whatever and congratulations on the new baby Flowers, I just hate for women to feel any pressure to lose baby weight (at least not for the first 5 years Grin).

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 17/07/2013 04:46

I just hate for women to feel any pressure to lose baby weight (at least not for the first 5 years

Oh, well, in that case...

God I'm hungry. Fantasising about the sort of junk food I never, ever buy (or like much even), like chip shop chips, pizza, that sort of thing. Madness.

CrystalDeCanter · 17/07/2013 05:03

mmmmmmmmmm pizza

bloody fasting Sad

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 17/07/2013 05:45

See, I don't even really like pizza. It's all bready. The Indian leftovers in my fridge, on the other hand, are calling to me so loudly I can hear them from my office on the other side of the city.

CrystalDeCanter · 17/07/2013 05:52

I see your Indian leftovers Tortoise and raise you freshly baked choc chip and banana muffins. The house is FULL of the scent of them.

I'm having to take the kids and I out of the house or I'll eat the lot.

harryhausen · 17/07/2013 07:07

Thanks for the welcomeSmile

I'm proud of myself for making it through the first fast day. I thought if be ravenous this morning but weirdly, I'm not.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 17/07/2013 07:16

Crystal, my desk drawer is crammed with proper English sherbet lemons that I bought last week in a moment of madness.
