Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

angel wow-eee. That is some change. You go girl!

angelabbie · 16/07/2013 15:36

Thanks so much EagleRD I have to be honest, I have not eaten any deep fried pussy so that may have helped :)

EagleRiderDirk · 16/07/2013 15:40

angel oh, so that's where I'm going wrong Wink

MelanieCheeks · 16/07/2013 15:41

whiter I used those crackerbreads a lot when I started fasting - they're pretty much the lowest calorie ones out there. BUT then I read that they are high GI, so for the extra 5 or 10 calories each I switched to decent tasting ryvita (I like the dark ones), or oat-cakes.

But get going whatever way you can - fine tune the details later!

babysaurus · 16/07/2013 15:45

ThAnks Angelbabble. Is being slow to start, at least scales wise, often the case then? Normally don't bother with scales at all but wanted a starting point.

virginposter · 16/07/2013 16:02

Just catching up with today's posts.

Ezzza so very pleased to hear from you again, I did ask after you on the maintainers thread but not a peep. I've missed your sage words as I loved your blogesque reports from China and hoped that you were keeping fasting up once back in the UK.
Well done on getting through a very stressful time and repairing the damage Grin

Southeastdweller · 16/07/2013 17:17

Goofymum Are you eating a lot of carbs on your NFD's? If so then I'd eat more protein - it's filling and means you don't pick as much. And your Dad is right about water.

Unremarkable FD here so far but looking forward to my prawn stir-fry tonight (with kale, courgette and mushrooms). I must remember to check the cals for my peanut satay sauce that's been lingering in the cupboard for ages.

Dotty342kids · 16/07/2013 17:54

Yes, good to see you again Ezza, always nice to have some of the more long term'ers knocking around the place to keep the rest of us going Smile.
Just about to have my veggie sausages, fried onions and pile of veg for fast day dinner. Yum!

MissUnicorn · 16/07/2013 17:56

Hello all, hope you're all well.
Angel fab pictures! I'm inspired to start doing walk away the pounds again.

Fast day for me, I've veered from my usual prawn stirfry and had an halloumi salad today. Wish I didn't have the pitta bread though as it feels like a waste of calories.

Lizzabadger · 16/07/2013 17:59

Wow AngelAbbie - amazing difference!

HellesBelles396 · 16/07/2013 18:26

FD plus PMS. Need want more food!!!!!!!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/07/2013 18:28

Third fast day today and it is a little easier. What I've found nice is saying 'no' to treats offered, I would feel deprived. On this woe I don't feel deprived as every day is different. If this helps me lose weight, I think I may have found my 'thing'.

Scales though, after my second FD I had lost 5 lbs, this is obviously going to bounce slightly depending on when you weigh yourself? When do you do it?

I'm a little scared to do it, feel a bit bloated but really want it to work.

BsshBossh · 16/07/2013 18:33

NaturalBlondeYeahRight I always weigh every Friday morning after my second FD. I suppose it doesn't really matter when you weigh in so long as it's the same day and time.

Dotty342kids · 16/07/2013 18:43

missunicorn how did you manage a halloumi salad on a fast day? I love halloumi but always assumed it's a calorie disaster Grin

NotAsTired · 16/07/2013 18:46

I have not eaten any deep fried pussy so that may have helped

This was the first post I saw today and I was Confused, Shock and Hmm but now I have read the whole thread I get it and feel a bit Blush.

harryhausen · 16/07/2013 19:13

Can I join this thread?

It's my first ever fast day today. I won't lie and say I'm hungry!! I'm waiting for DH to come home so I can eat dinner with him.

I managed up to lunch easily with nothing but water. Busy morning etc. Then I had porridge for lunch.

I hope it gets easier as I go onSmile

NotAsTired · 16/07/2013 19:13

ERD, unfortunately notsotired was taken Sad

Breadandwine · 16/07/2013 19:38

I'm saying nothing!

Except, Hi, Ezzza! How nice to see you - glad you're in a good place!

Hope we're going to see more of you.

NurseEzzzaChapel · 16/07/2013 20:00

Thanks B&W, I hope I can find time to pop in more often now too.

vikkisue · 16/07/2013 20:06

Hi guys, I'm still here, 3rd fast day yesterday went really well. I lost 1lb in total last week as I had a massive weekend with a party etc and way too much to drink, so although I'm a little disappointed I know why I gained back most of the pounds I lost during the week. I think I'm going to change my weigh day and take notice of the weight I am after my second fast like some of you are doing. It might perhaps make me feel a little more positive... Even though it seems like I might be cooking the books:-/ as long as the overall trend as downwards eh?

Also I'm enjoying what has happened to my appetite and my taste buds due to fasting... It's almost like I've re-booted my digestive system!

Dotty342kids · 16/07/2013 20:11

Good for you vikkisue, sounds like you're being very positive which is great.
Eating day tomorrow but I'm finding this heat is knocking my appetite a bit. Today's probably been one of the easiest fast days I've done, for precisely that reason Smile

dines · 16/07/2013 20:30
