Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

obvs - that's 10 lbs total loss, no over last 2 weeks! Grin

Danceasifnooneswatching · 16/07/2013 11:35

Hi all have lurked for a while but am now ready to jump in Grin

My BMR is 1445
My TDEE is 2240

My question is probably very stupid and quite possibly already on here but what do these figures actually mean.....TIA Grin

alwaysanauntie · 16/07/2013 11:40

Dance very basically, BMR is what you need to stay alive (breathe, pump blood round your body etc) and TDEE is what you need to eat to maintain your current weight given your stats and activity level.

BTW, no silly questions here, always makes sense to ask if you're not sure and there are LOTS and LOTS of very helpful posters and experienced 5:2ers!

BsshBossh · 16/07/2013 11:49

Dance, as always says. So on 5:2 you'd eat 2240 (or close to) on non-fast days and 500 cals on 2 fast days - creating a weekly calorie deficit. Some of us on here do it this way@

Fast days: 500 cals
Non-fast days (weekdays only): under TDEE
Weekends: over TDEE (so we can enjoy!)

But always remember (whether you count or not) that you need to create a weekly calorie deficit to lose.

I'm so hungry today. had a giant brekkie, taken the kids swimming, had lunch and am seriously considering deep fat frying the cat. omnomnomnomnomnom

angelabbie · 16/07/2013 12:41

Thank you peplum that made me laugh, I have not been shredding, just lots of walking every day and two gym classes per week. If you look at me from a side on pic it does not look quite as dramatic so my girth is still in need of shrinking but its all going the right way. Thanks too BSSH your posts and so many others inspired me to start this in the first place.

FairyThunderthighs · 16/07/2013 13:03

Hi all I am a newbie here, recruited by the inspirational BsshBoshh from my despairing post in Weight Loss Chat. I have downloaded MFP although I don't currently own scales so don't know what my weight is, so can't start using it. Looking forward to getting tips from you all and starting on my weight loss journey!

Dotty342kids · 16/07/2013 13:11

HEllo all, just catching up after a day in London yesterday. Boy was it hot!
Anyway, played tennis this mornng and am fasting today which I've been looking forward to after a few days of less than healthy eating. Nice to see how everyone's doing Smile

babysaurus · 16/07/2013 13:31

Made mistake of weighing myself again. In ten days and three fast days I've lost the grand total of 1lb.
Wow.
Pissed off now. Sad

wrigglebum · 16/07/2013 13:41

That is amazing weightloss Angel.

No fast for me yesterday as it was my birthday, so instead I did 16:8 Friday and yesterday (actually managed 19 hours fast yesterday), now doing a fast day today. Ate a fair bit over the weekend as we went away to see family, then yesterday was birthday cake, Thai takeaway, choc cheesecake and wine- yum. Tomorrow I'm hosting a barbecue so will no doubt eat a lot then, and fast on Thursday. Might struggle a bit with the eating this week- DS1 has chicken pox so we're stuck in all day and mega grumpy!

I got the 5:2 cookbook for my birthday- some lovely ideas in there. I've added puy lentils and soy beans to my ocado order after having a quick browse.

Have been hovering around 10st7 for the last week, which I'm pretty happy with. I don't have too much to lose, I'm healthy bmi (just), so it was never going to be fast weightloss. However, I've been tracking body fat too and that seems to be decreasing too. I have scales that measure, so they aren't that accurate but should show a trend iyswim. Two weeks ago I was 35.8% body fat- that is officially obese even though I'm ok for BMI. Now showing as 33.4%, still obese (31% and under is ok), but dropping. I'll try and keep an eye on it to make sure any losses are fat rather than muscle.

wrigglebum · 16/07/2013 13:45

Fairy- could you use some scales in a shop just so you know your starting point, it's also a good idea to do your measurements. Once you know, don't worry too much about weight, just focus on those NSVs.

MelanieCheeks · 16/07/2013 13:54

Phooey, rubbish lunchtime. Went to the dry cleaners to leave off a frock, but it was being demolished! Went to IKEA to meet friend who was to lend me a costume for a fancy dress party, and she forgot!

On the plus side, I didnt have to test my willpower against IKEA's green cakes. I'm having a coffee now, might have a miso soup in a bit. Chicken and egg white omelette planned for dinner, with some berrries for pud.

Meeting friend again on Thursday - my next fast day. But hopefully her Daphne-from-Scooby-Doo costume will inspire me to keep at it!

FairyThunderthighs · 16/07/2013 13:57

What measurements do I need to do, wrigglebum? Not focusing on weight seems like a very good way to go, since it wasn't weight that caused my minor breakdown the other day it was measurements, my lack of ability to fit into clothes... :(

Whitershadeofpale · 16/07/2013 13:59

Right I've decided I'm joining in. I lost 3 stone on WW last year but my dad died in November and I went off the rails and then thought there was no point in starting again until after Christmas and I just seem to be able to turn that switch back on to start again.

I downloaded MFP app and according to that to maintain I should be looking at 1910cals a day. does that sound right?

I'm going to do my first fast day tomorrow. I was thinking of a few ryvita crisp breads with a scraping of low fat cream cheese and cucumber for lunch and then maybe some veg soup for dinner. Does that sound sensible?

NurseEzzzaChapel · 16/07/2013 14:10

FairyThunderthighs, typical measurements are Bust, Waist and Hips, but when I started I took loads of measurements. I took neck, right upper arm, bust, chest (i.e. where the band of your bra goes around your ribcage as this will show you whether your boobs are actually getting smaller or if it's the layer of fat they're sitting on!), waist, hips (fullest part of bum is the measurement I took for hips), thigh and calf. I was glad I took those measurements because the months when I didn't lose anything off bust, waist or hips I still managed to loose a bit from one of the other measurements.

I also advise deciding what waist measurement you will take. Of course the waist is the narrowest part of the torso an inch or so above the belly button, but there's a big difference in the waist measurement depending on whether you suck your tummy in all the way or stick it out as far as it will go. I decided to take a 'pilates 30' measurement, i.e. sucked in a little bit but only as much as I could reasonably hold for hours at a time.

MelanieCheeks · 16/07/2013 14:17

whiter ryvita are about 25 -35 each, depending on what sort. Cucumber, negligible calories, low fat cheese, 50-75 depending on how much. What sort of veg soup - home made or from a can?

Seems a good enough plan, make sure you drink lots of water too.

mttum · 16/07/2013 14:17

Ha ha erd Grin perhaps you might inspire a title for the next thread: "Put down that deep fried cat, you can eat it tomorrow!"

angelabbie · 16/07/2013 14:34

BABYsaurus I was the same do not give up, it took me two weeks to get into the stride.

T

BsshBossh · 16/07/2013 14:35

Hi Fairy :) I'm like Ezzza and measure everything, including over bust, under bust, across bust, waist at navel, narrowest part of waist, wrist, neck... you get the idea Grin. I often see inch losses even when the scales don't show weightloss so it's very motivating.

Having said that, if you want toweigh then just go to Boots. It's too public for me though. I invested in digital scales so I could weigh once a week (morning after second fast day) in private.

I'd definitely recommend also taking photos of yourself. When you are size 12 you will be glad you have a before and after comparison. I really regret not taking figure-revealing photos of myself when I was size 20.

wrigglebum · 16/07/2013 14:38

Yes, the measurements suggested are good. Also, think of an outfit that fits just right now, then watch it get bigger Smile.

Whitershadeofpale · 16/07/2013 14:51

Thanks Melanie I was thinking of using the ryvita [http://www.ryvita.co.uk/products/crackerbread crackerbreads] according to the pack they're 19cals each with 70cals worth of cheese, say 130cals altogether.

If I have time I'll make my own if not I'll get a carton of fresh soup and have half of that. I think I should then still have enough for a few cups of coffee with skimmed milk.

That's the advantage of this weather, I don't get as hungry and drinl loads of water Grin

Whitershadeofpale · 16/07/2013 14:52

oops these ones www.ryvita.co.uk/products/crackerbread

somewherebecomingrain · 16/07/2013 14:57

Hello

angelabbie great pics - much less if you!

I've been doing 6:1 plus random 16:8s once or twice a week. I'm breastfeeding and found 5:2 too hard.

I continue to lose slowly - down to 11.10 from 12.3 so 7lb over ... 7 weeks ... Actually double take that's bloody phenomenal.

I've never controlled my weight before. Amazing.

I remember a month ago wondering if I'd ever see the 11s!

Talkinpeace · 16/07/2013 15:03

Fairythunder welcome. You have landed in a good place.

TBH if you do not want to weigh yourself and and picking up on some info from your post last night
go for
Monday : 500 calories - if possible in one snack and one small meal
Tuesday : 2000 calories - if possible in two small meals and one larger one - plan your menu
Wednesday : same as Tuesday
Thursday : same as Monday
Friday : same as Tuesday but with a glass of wine
Saturday : whatever you like
Sunday : same as Friday

also, if you can, make as many of the meals as you can vegetarian / fish because then your skin will look amazing for your wedding.

Have a read through the tips and hints thread to get good ideas

Talkinpeace · 16/07/2013 15:08

Yo Ezzza good to hear you are still keeping busy and well
