The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

6.30 on a fast day here. Was ravenous earlier after eating nothing all day and bought a pakora type thingy from the local health food shop - it was small - how many calories do you think it would be????

I'm now going to drink heaps of water and eat carrots and apples for dinner.

Enjoy the fasting all you fasters.

Talkinpeace · 15/07/2013 11:39

crystal
pakoras are deep fried ..... try not to think about the fat in the pastry wrapping, saturated in cooking fat and the fat in the filling Wink probably around the 250 calories mark. Yes really Grin

tortoise
rapid weight gain is not "fat". Its undigested food in your system and fluid stored in your bloodstream and under your skin.
I put on 7lb over Christmas and got rid of the lot in three weeks.
4 lb over Easter was gone in 2 weeks

today I'm 3lb heavier than I was on Friday - wine, cider, meal out, roast sunday lunch
by Thursday I'll be back down again and by Friday may have managed to drop further

be controlled and it will be gone in a jiffy.

NameoftheRose · 15/07/2013 12:11

Hi everyone,
I've joined Mumsnet, inspired by this thread.
Last year I lost 2 stone, through exercise - weights and aerobic and long walks with the dog, and healthy eating.
But I've hit the dreaded plateau with at least 10lbs to go, maybe a stone. I'm going to decide about that when I get there, as I'm concerned that at my age I might need to weigh a bit more than I did in my twenties or risk looking haggard.
So I've decided to try the 5:2 as a way to kick things off again and also as a WOL. I had my first FD last Thursday, planning to fast Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I didn't find the fast day at all hard but that is because for 30 years I belonged to a religious sect (have I got stories to tell Blush ) where we fasted for 24 hours once a month, no calories, no water even. After that, 500 calories is relatively easy. So I guess something good came out of it....
I've found these threads about the 5:2 fascinating and full of good tips. I decided to skip breakfast on fast days, small lunch, then main meal in the evening. I felt a bit peckish, but nothing unbearable.
My OH is 5:2ing with me, he only needs to lose about a stone too, at the most.
I'm wondering whether to buy new scales, mine are over ten years old, Weight-Watchers ones. They seem to work ok and I suppose they will tell me the general trend even if they're not spot on with weight. Do scales need replacing eventually?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/07/2013 12:16

TIP I always think of water weight/undigested food weight as being something that hangs around for a day or two, whereas this weight splodged on last week and then has stayed there? However, you have just convinced me to go make myself a massive mug of chamomile tea, which I think is mildly diuretic.

NameoftheRose that is some hardcore fasting, how long ago did you leave the sect?

My scales are ancient, and not digital. I keep meaning to buy new ones but tbh I'm scared that I'll step on them and find out that I'm heavier than I think I am. I know that numbers are just numbers and I won't magically stop fitting my clothes, but it's still a worry!

IDismyname · 15/07/2013 12:43

Hi all

Just checking in on a FD; DS is now on holiday, so am having to feed him hourly - or what seems like it!

I thought the heat would put me off eating, but I've had a rumbly tummy all day! Must go and drink more water!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 15/07/2013 12:44

Hi All, fast day here, Mon and weds planned for this week, really lovely relaxing (child free) weekend, drank both Fri and Sat night but really didn't eat that much, despite NFD's and almost no snacking, I think I allowed myself a 9 bar flax seed cereal bar on one day.

So new adoption of 16:8 has been stuck to, and is the way forward, although will allow myself breakfast occasionally on weekends but probably when I have company rather than alone.

I've made a concerted effort to eat any chocolate I think I might want later immediately after a meal -to cut out snacking, sometimes I decide i just don't want it, and if I feel like it later i'm having a nice cup of earl grey with milk, and telling myself I can have the chocolate on my next NFD.

I will weigh in both tomorrow and Thurs after both fasts, really hoping to see a continued loss (even if just 1 pound) this is week 3 back on track after a long while of successful and unsuccessful maintaining.

new desire to get to a lower bmi and also really learn to maintain more carefully.

nameoftherose your 30 years in a sect does sound very interesting, would love to hear some stories, do you have a book or a blog?

good luck all, and welcome all newbies.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 15/07/2013 12:49

First ever fast day- this is going easier than I thought it would though not helped by doing two cooking sessions with patients. Watching them make 2 delicious meals and having to go to tesco twice is not fun! I did enjoy my rice cake/slim a soup lunch but the hunger pangs are on their way. I have an operation in 3 months and need to not be obese to recover better. I need to do this!

monster54 · 15/07/2013 13:37

Ohhh would love to read a blog nameoftherose

FD here too. I've had a wild weekend, first in a long time and thoroughly enjoyed.

I'm sticking to 4:3 as I have some serious deadlines coming up that I need to meet in terms of where I want to be weight wise.

FD going well today. It's hot and I don't have a huge appetite in this weather. Loading up on water. I was really surprised, I have a pint glass at work and worked out that 2 litres is almost 4 pints!!!

I was quite surprised. I most definitely do not drink enough. Am I a total dumb arse for not knowing that!!!

HelgatheHairy · 15/07/2013 13:38

Thanks all. I calculated his Tdee using light activity levels but the last few weekends he has actually been doing heavy manual labour. He has a desk job during the week but spent last weekend ripping the roof off our garage - he used to be a carpenter. The weekend before he spent Saturday moving flagstones. No cardio exercise though.

He has the kind of build that puts on muscle really easily so I'm wondering if its that.

BsshBossh · 15/07/2013 14:02

Hello all. Halfway through a FD today. Been busy working and shopping for upcoming holiday so fast so far is going well. I ate far too much sugar this weekend and felt argh as a result so I may throw in a 16:8 or even 19:5 day this week to "clean" myself out a bit.

NameoftheRose · 15/07/2013 14:27

Tortoise - I left the sect five years ago, I was 'out' mentally a good year or more before that but I had to tread carefully as I wanted to keep my family intact. Some 'apostates' have lost marriages, become estranged from children etc when they've left. I was lucky and careful and now we are all out and leaving normal lives (whatever normal is).

mumof and monster - I've thought about a blog or book, but seriously, some of it's so crazy I'm sure people would think "That NameoftheRose and her hyperbole. Or downright lies".

I know what you mean about the scales, Tortoise. When my height was accurately measured a couple of years ago and I discovered I was half an inch shorter than I thought I was (that's a lot when you're just over 5 feet 1), my first thought was 'Bugger, my BMI just went up."

Talkinpeace · 15/07/2013 14:38

Well that fast went pear shaped.
DH decided he was hungry and made us lunch
and how can I resists a sandwich of scrummy left over roast beef!
ah well, its a 16:8 day instead!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 15/07/2013 14:45

had a lovely lunch from Crussh a smoothies and salad place, i bought 2 small pot salads, one was soya bean, aubergine, and feta, and then other was tuna, sweetcorn, kidney beans, both with fresh herbs and dressing, i ate half of each pot coming to 210 cals, one coffee with milk and lots of fizzy water.

have a chicken arrabiatta meal soup from sainsburys for dinner coming in at 230cals, leaving maybe enough for an apple? or some strawberries?

somewherebecomingrain · 15/07/2013 14:49

Nearly 3pm had nothing but 2x tea and 2x milky coffee.

And feel I can keep going! Easiest fast day yet.

Well done macca I watched a twilight film on my first fast day to get through it.

Gilbertus · 15/07/2013 15:22

Help! 4th Fd and struggling. Apple, miso soup, 3x tea which MFP makes 211 calories. Cooking a burger for dd2 and stuffed pasta for dd3. Feel very miserable and as though I want a hot meal...

monster54 · 15/07/2013 15:25

gillbertus tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow....

Just think you can have what you want tomorrow!!!!!

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

Gilbertus · 15/07/2013 15:27

Thanks Grin I need to keep busy. And stop thinking about the leftover roast chicken...

EagleRiderDirk · 15/07/2013 15:43

Nsv: finally feel confident enough to splash around in the paddling pool with dcs wearing a swimming cossy.

not quite such an nsv: as I'm taking them to swimming lessons tomorrow I've had to break out the old cossy. a size 20 maternity tankini is not the most flattering thing on someone who has just started squeezing into 14s. and it shows all the damage 2 pregnancies and weight loss have done to my boobies Sad

EagleRiderDirk · 15/07/2013 15:45

still I'm confident enough to be wearing it and not getting soaked in full on clothing Grin

Gilbertus · 15/07/2013 15:54

I've cracked. Eating a pack of brown shrimp at 78 cals. Stupid apple! With my soup tonight I'll be 75 cals over although I did horse ride this morning so should have burned some calories.

HellesBelles396 · 15/07/2013 15:56

NFD today and I had a twix - I can't think of a time I've better enjoyed one. Only a week in and I am enjoying food more.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 15/07/2013 16:07

Shaking with low blood sugar. Any tips?

Beachcomber · 15/07/2013 16:10

Good on you EagleRiderDirk.

I tried on a bikini the other day that I used to wear years ago thinking it might be OK as I have lost a bit of weight (before starting 5.2). It did sort of fit but there was no way I could wear it as it didn't support my now saggy boobs nearly enough and the waist band of the bottoms sat right in that crease that you get when you have had children - there was a sort of half empty muffin top flopping over the waistband.

OK so the muffin top is a bit deflated but it still 'ain't a good look. Grin

I took it off and put my board shorts bikini on and felt much better. (No need for lady gardening too!)

My FD is going OK so far just am a bit snappy with the children. Off to do my workout now.

EagleRiderDirk · 15/07/2013 16:12

macca thinking back to my low gi days so the sugar doesn't send you too over mad with hunger - flapjacks, yoghurt, nuts, airpopped popcorn.

Yoghurt or popcorn may be the best for the calorie allowance.

Or a fruit tea

QueenBoudicea · 15/07/2013 16:13

Have you eaten yet today? If you've got the shakes I'd have a low gi snack
