BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

SoTiredAgain · 14/07/2013 22:38

Thanks, Betsy. Smile At the moment, I am losing about a lb a week, which I am happy with. If I stall, I will try to increase my calorie intake.

mamamoomin2 · 14/07/2013 23:10

Motivation needed!

So after a month or so on a break for 5:2 I'm starting up again. I have lots going on at work and have.lost my fasting mojo (i also had a looong plateau which didn't help)...but I want to shift this last stone and be done with it.

Not sure how 2mo will go but am hoping I cam cope, still think by 3pm and not reach for a fat (which I also recently started after 1.5months off - Urgh how did it all go so wrong?! On a plus point, have started mindfulness course so hoping that will help in all my troubles!

Oh dear..don't mean for it to all be doom and gloom!

mamamoomin2 · 14/07/2013 23:12

Sorry typos! Fag not fat...but I hope I don't grab a block of butter or cheese , as much as I'm fond of both :)

Breadandwine · 15/07/2013 00:07

Best wishes, mama!

You know you can do it. You just need to declare yourself 'In the zone' and your fasting mojo will magically reappear!

And step away from the fags, you do NOT need them!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/07/2013 02:03

Hey all. I haven't been here for a week or two because I have been sulking.

Why have I been sulking? Because I went off-piste for a week because I was solo parenting and couldn't be arsed - that means it's 12 days since I last fasted - and I have put on FIVE POUNDS. FIVE. I finally got back down to 60 kg and now I'm 62.5.

And it's not TOTM. And it's not a weird reading; I have weighed 62.5 consistently for the past week (so, from five days after my last fast, actually) except when it's been higher. How did I put on 5 lbs in 5 days?

I can't do this if two months of effort can be undone in one week. Seriously.

CrystalDeCanter · 15/07/2013 02:46

Oh tortoise what an absolute fucker. I would be sulking too, it's just so bloody hard this fasting (am mid fast and starving). I know people who have done this longer term have up and down wobbles. Maybe it's that? Are you fasting this week? Did you really stuff yourself on yr week off Grin, be honest.

I took a look at myself in the mirror yesterday and wasn't v happy so really need to lose these remaining kgs. It's taking a while tho.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/07/2013 02:59

Well, I did and I didn't - I mean, not to the point of feeling sick or anything! I didn't watch what I ate at all, and since DH was away I tended to the Brie-on-crackers-with olives style of dinner, but still.

Yesterday morning - although, after breakfast, so it didn't really count - I was actually 64 kg, which is my starting point. And my fat jeans felt uncomfortable. But 62.5 this morning is what I'm counting.

MelanieCheeks · 15/07/2013 06:41

Weight does fluctuate up and down by more than you think. Hopefully that's mostly water retention and you'll see it disappear again after a few fasts.

Not sure when to fast this week - I like Monday's but it's a holiday here, and I'm supposed to be going Out with DH for some touristy type visits. Easy enough to avoid the overpriced cafe food and just have a black coffee, BUT I have a chicken which needs using up and really should be roasted tonight, AND I had a terrible day of eating yesterday (lunch out with DH during which he sulked about the position of the table, I got upset, and spent the rest of the day eating crisps and jelly beans). So I think I should try to eat sensibly today, enjoy a zumba class this evening (haven't been in yonks), do the chicken tonight, and then fast tomorrow when I'm back at work.

BetsyBell · 15/07/2013 07:19

tortoise a couple of fasts will see off the extra pounds. I put on weight very easily and I know that 5:2 is a way of life for me now to keep those pounds off. Those weeks you weren't losing? You were maintaining and that means you weren't putting weight on. It's easy to forget how quickly it goes on again until we go off piste!

Don't despair, you can do this, you know you can and maybe you'll enjoy taking control again?

BUT it's also ok to take a break but best to enjoy it next time, now that you'll put a bit back on but also you'll know that you can quickly get rid of it again.

It's not laid down as proper fat yet, they'll be a load of water retention and indigested food in your system so those pounds are not true weight yet.

So, get back to it and you'll feel better but please don't think that you've undone all your hard work, you haven't.

OP posts:
Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/07/2013 07:23

But. I mean, I want to believe you. But.

FIVE POUNDS.

IN A WEEK.

That's ten fasts! That doesn't feel like "Quickly getting rid of it".

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/07/2013 07:27

By the way, though, I did mean to stop being so self indulgent and congratulate you on your very impressive and hard won stats from upthread, Betsy. Good for you!

SoTiredAgain · 15/07/2013 07:41

FD today. Planning to do 30 day shred. Wish me luck because DS is at home. Last time I did this with DS at home he was crawling under me when I was trying to do squats and climbing on me when I was doing the plank exercises. He is high as a kite today. Right, off I go. [braces self]

BetsyBell · 15/07/2013 07:58

tortoise and I did all that while putting on at least 7lbs on every holiday...

I honestly think that newly put on weight (not yet fat) will come off in 2 fasts... Care to try and prove me wrong? And yes, that is a challenge Grin

Itsaboatjack · 15/07/2013 08:24

Sorry I've not been posting much recently. I've had a difficult week and only managed 1 fast. Silly really, if I'm struggling I know I should come on here more as there is always wonderful support.

I can't do an FD today as I have a meeting with my wine rep to update my wine list so there will obviously be wine tasting involved and I've always had trouble with the spitting it out bit of it Grin. I will 16:8 though and FD tomorrow.

Good luck to all today's fasters.

I'll read back over the thread later today and try and contribute a bit.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 15/07/2013 08:31

Oh, aren't you wonderful, Betsy. Thank you so very much.

I'm at 5 pm of a fast day today - two skim coffees (140 cal) and a good hearty 300 cal dinner planned for later (white fish, udon noodles, wakame seaweed and a lot of green veg). I will be happy if I am wrong and you are right!

Itsaboatjack, what do you DO for a living? Envy

EagleRiderDirk · 15/07/2013 08:44

tortoise I'm sure, given everyone else on these threads experience with rapid holiday gain it is going to come off in a few fasts.

Gah, so it appears it is blocked week in my family. It caused me to gain nearly 3lb and 2 inches on my waist (the waist inches appeared suddenly yesterday). Thankfully some order has been restored today, scales are showing the same as saturday morning and fingers crossed I may see a drop for the first time in 2 weeks tomorrow (after today's fast). Though I'd be happy to see the same weight as 2 weeks ago! Sorry for continuing the tmi. I may need to change my user name to poop-girl

Beachcomber · 15/07/2013 08:48

Hello everyone. Third FD for me today. Have managed OK so far so hoping today will be OK. Good luck to other Monday fasters!

QueenBoudicea · 15/07/2013 09:13

Morning all. Fd here today.
Didn't have a proper dinner last night so not sure how easy it'll be today. Am hoping that the heat will stop me feeling hungry!
Starting week 4 and only loss so far is 1lb :( no nsv either.
I'm going to have to mfp to see whether I'm over doing it on nfd's.
Good luck all today.

HairyPotter · 15/07/2013 09:13

It's my 2nd FD today and I'm hungry already Sad. I also did L1D1 of the shred yesterday and I'm sooo much pain, I'm not sure I can do D2.

Tortoise Oh no! I would be seriously sulking too. This is my worry about doing the shred, I'm pretty sure I didn't lose much weight and possibly gained a lb.

Should I be sticking to my tdee (1888) on NFD? Or lower than that? I'm not eating my exercise calories as yet...

Good luck everyone (and me Grin)

Breadandwine · 15/07/2013 09:29

Tortoise I'm another one in the 'It'll disappear very quickly' camp.

Once your body is used to you fasting, extra weight is lost quite easily, IME.

I put on five pounds recently, over an indulgent 10 days - and I was back to normal after my second fast.

Itsaboatjack · 15/07/2013 09:34

Grin tortoise, I run a pub.

peplum41 · 15/07/2013 09:41

Hi all,

tortoise, I got all confused with your numbers as you mentioned both pounds and kilos, and I thought you'd put 5kg on, which is roughly 11lbs! Now that would concern me, but honestly 5lbs is fine. Be good this week, drink plenty of water and have a good veggie intake, be gone next week Im sure.Smile Infact, I put about 5lbs on last week and didn't manage to fast until yesterday yet its mysteriously vanished.

peplum41 · 15/07/2013 09:52

OI that just went up mid post!

Just wanted to say hairy you can eat your full TDEE if you wish, don't if your not hungry. Personally, my problem is trying to not eat more than my TDEE. Its no wonder I ended up at 13st 4.

queenB stick it out a bit longer. The NSVs take a while, then you're almost overwhelmed by them. Patience, a virtue easily forgotten in this instant gratification world we live in. Does anyone remember how slow the internet used to be in the old dial up modem days?

Moomin, fags don't relieve stress, they just relieve a craving for nicotine! Hope your fast goes ok.

somewherebecomingrain · 15/07/2013 10:02

Morning all. Going for a fast today. Good luck everyone.

Plan is ... No plan. Maybe soup at 2pm and a be good to yourself at 6pm. Coffee till then.

Not v inspiring but if I do something more interesting ill let you know
