Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I frequently chuckle at this thread. ERD somehow made a hellish FD hilarious yesterday.

headintclods you and me are the same. Same height, slow loss, Im marginally younger but you're a good stone lighter. I lost the first stone in about 6 weeks but have since stuck, partly plateau, partly piggery. Lets just plod on. Im taking the advice given to you. Im trying to concentrate on toning as toned muscles burn more cals, and you can never be too toned.

mttum meant to thank you for bottled water tip yesterday. Its my new cant leave home without one accessory.

ceebees we're just not used to this heat! Im flaked out by it, if I had attention seeking little uns to contend with the B&Js wouldn't stand a chance. Are you getting to the gym much this week? We've been swimming twice.

Betsy thanks for the stats. A size 6 hoodie speaks volumes.

monster54 yay glad you're back and in the 10s tooSmile

mehefin sounds a good idea, lots of lovely fresh from the garden micro nutrients, plus some fasting time. Is the idea to 16:8 7 days a week? Might try that myself for a week or to then return to 5:2.

welcome newbies not mentioning names as they seem to disappear and I want you to stay! Keep with us.

BetsyBell · 12/07/2013 16:16

Gosh thanks everyone Flowers! It's good to remind yourself how far you've come when you've been doing this for a while - it's easy to get bogged down in the details. 2 years may sound like a lot but there's been a lot of lessons learnt on the way and now I have the tools to never put that weight back on again - far more useful than a quick fix.

I'm 5'5" too! There seems to be a lot of us on here :)

I fasted yesterday but didn't eat again until lunch and had a morning of decent activity. Just got back from school and I was suddenly properly hungry. Amazingly I didn't fancy the ice cream, bread or crumpets but just wolfed down a plate of leftover steamed carrots and broccoli with a slice of ham and some cold baked beans!

Mehefin I drooled when I read your post, I'm regretting not planting courgettes and beans this year - there would have been a bumper crop now!

Headinclouds you're actually 2 and a bit stone lighter.

missunicorn callenetics that's a retro vibe! A lot of her moves have been stolen by newer instructors.

For anyone who missed the wonderful, Fat, Sick and nearly dead, it's repeated tomorrow at 5.00 pm on Channel 5. It will make you Smile

monster54 · 12/07/2013 16:47

Thanks peplum so glad its started to move again. Hopefully another 10lbs and I'll be at goal!

I know what you mean besty have to keep reminding myself thats 20lbs now!

I watched fat, sick and nearly dead and it was so inspirational. I know this is a way of life for me I just had to bite the bullet and go 4:3/ADF just to get things moving again as I don't have the exercise time!!!

mttum · 12/07/2013 17:42

Nearly G&T time: betsybell, sure we can't tempt you? Grin

Dotty342kids · 12/07/2013 17:52

Gosh it's hot out there. Long drive up to Yorkshire to visit friends tomorrow and may well eat / drink too much but hey, that's what weekends are for Grin

Hope you all have a good weekend, whatever you're doing!

mttum · 12/07/2013 18:20

Hardest fast day so far yesterday. 4 am start followed by a long train journey and an even longer meeting in London. To cap it all, when I got home I found I'd parked the car near the station right in front of the chip shop!. Then went to pick DD up from her grandad and he tried to ply me with gin, which I just about managed to resist. Had a banging head by the time I opened the house door, so straight to bed for a rather nonplussed DD and then me. But...

I managed it! Zero cal fast all day yesterday, yay!

Been good so far today, but the peanuts and gin are at the ready! Grin

Happy weekend everyone.

Talkinpeace · 12/07/2013 18:31

Its a shame there isn't a smiley for Ouzo with LOADS of ice and three parts cold water.

SoTiredAgain · 12/07/2013 18:54

Unplanned fd today!

I started off planning to do 16:8 but then DS was at home and we were very busy running errands and before I knew it, it was time to go to work. I completely ran out of time for lunch. In the past it would have been an absolute calamity but I took it all in my stride. Smile. I just thought I might as well get on with a proper fast. So all eaten up, apart from some strawberries to come. Only downside is that I've had no veg today Sad

SoTiredAgain · 12/07/2013 18:56

Mttum. That sounds like an exhausting day, well done on getting through it.

BetsyBell · 12/07/2013 18:57

mttum Of course I can be tempted Grin, however there's a bottle of pink prosecco with my name on it Wine Wine

Have a lovely evening/weekend folks, I'll see you on the other side...

NFD today and am 150cal over TDEE Angry with self.

I also weighed myself (I had estimated my weight as 14 stone when calculating everything) and I am 16 stone. All I could think was when 6'1" xh was 16 stone he was huge! And my waist is 40 inches. I can't believe I allowed myself to turn into this.

On the plus side -at least I have a plan for fixing it.

EagleRiderDirk · 12/07/2013 19:13

helles Keep your chin up, you've made a choice to change that now though so don't look back Flowers

MelanieCheeks · 12/07/2013 19:32

Helles, don't get too hung up on numbers. Everything you measure is an estimate - even that TDEE figure is an approximation. I find it helpful to do a plus or minus 10% on all numbers, so with that tolerance level I bet your 1150 cals wasn't much at all.

HellesBelles396 · 12/07/2013 19:44

Thank you both

QueenBoudicea · 12/07/2013 19:46

Fd nearly over. Had lunch at 4.30pm so not particularly hungry now. Would it be ok if I just didn't eat anything else til tomorrow? That would mean I'd only have about 230 cals for today.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 12/07/2013 20:15

Hello! Delurking and marking place. Been reading you all avidly and cheering for you, now I've joined you. Started low carb 5:2 on Monday, fasted Tues and Thurs. Period started today, NFD but am amazingly unbloated and tummy flatter than normal TOTM pregnant look (though still flabby).

Thanks for all the amazing tips and shared stories.

mehefin · 12/07/2013 20:20

Hi Peplum I'm planning 5 days a week not sure how it will work around my nights but I will still eat my veggies then. Today I made a big salad of broad beans, sugar snaps, red onion and cooked plum tomatoes with olives, capers and lemon juice have eaten that with a little feta cheese and a slice of sourdough and I feel great.

Plan for next week is to buy a free range chicken and roast that for eating with veg each day will buy wraps and pittas for my boy to add to his meals

Be interesting to hear if you try it for a while too. Seems to me that an abundance of fresh young veg is a true feast!

Am wondering about a bit of juicing I think there is one lurking in a cupboard

Great to hear how everyone is getting on -all the posts are so inspiring

EagleRiderDirk · 12/07/2013 20:44

The kids are in bed. I have had my chicken and chips, which was a nice small portion so now have my feet up with some Wine. Here's to NFDs!

frenchfancy · 12/07/2013 21:14

queen of course it would be ok. There is no need to eat all your 500 cals. Some hard core people do 36 hours calorie free (not me I hasten to add).

Talkinpeace · 12/07/2013 21:17

"Unplanned FD today"
I find it hard to explain how happy I am to see that phrase on these threads.
Its about "I was busy and not hungry so did not eat what I did not need"
which is the be all and end all of healthy eating.
FOR EVER

Those who read maintainers will know that I've lost more weight than my target BUT am getting really fit and (being vain) look better and better for it

my current lower limit (target) is a stone lower than the last one
which will take me back to what I weighed at age 18 ...

akarucker · 12/07/2013 21:32

Oh blimey, I certainly know how to overdo it on a NFD.

I still have virtually no control on nfd. I have lots on fast days, I wish I could adopt the same mindset for nfd, but a mindset is just that...a mindset....and it's not there.

Adding an extra FD in tomorrow to try and compensate.

Talkinpeace · 12/07/2013 21:35

aka
do you log your MFP calories on NFDs to see where the disasters are
I KNOW that Dr MM didn't - but he started at BMI of 24

akarucker · 12/07/2013 21:51

tip no, I've got a thing about logging on mfp - makes me feel like I'm on a diet. There is no doubt or confusion as to where the disasters are though hang on whilst I clear up the chocolate, crisp, and ice cream wrappers

Just don't know why I undo all my excellent FD work! I'm a mystery to myself...If only I could get rid of this sense of entitlement I seem to have given myself on nfd, to allow myself to 'not feel deprived' - and believe me, there is no deprivation going on, on nfd!

How did you ever shift your mind? You see, although I do enjoy FD, of course I feel somewhat deprived, so in order to enjoy this woe, I'm fully able to manage and enjoy FD with the knowledge that I can have what I want on nfd. Because if I didn't, I'd be on a diet!!!

Urgh, sorry, I hate to come on here in a bad mood, complaining like this..... I think the problem is, I came into this thinking it was a magic weight loss cure! Perhaps not, for someone who is as naturally greedy as me!
