Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread Number 23: Summer's really here - time to melt off those extra pounds!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2013 22:49

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing back through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Major nsv - 2 people told me I'd lost loads of weight!!! Delighted with myself.
Elr that's brilliant, can't wait to see 10 something, Gilbertus 3.25 is some loss, congrats!
Not weighing in until tomorrow but I feel light as a feather after those comments Grin

BetsyBell · 12/07/2013 09:36

I'm about to complete my 6th month of 5:2 which seems to be a good time to post up some progress stats -

Total loss since Sept 2011:

Start weight 13st6, (188lb, 85.3kg), BMI 31.3

Started 5:2 mid Jan 2013 at 11st 2.8 (156.8lbs, 71.1kg), BMI 26.1

Today: 9 stone 11.8 (137.8lbs, 62.5kg)
so 19lbs (8.6kg) lost in 6 months of 5:2

So 50.2lbs (22.8kg) lost in total, current BMI 22.9

My target is to maintain around the BMI 22 mark.

headintheclouds I agree with others that sometimes you should be eating more. I think you're being too rigid at the moment and that actually it's good to keep your body guessing now and then.

ceebeegeebies · 12/07/2013 09:55

Morning everyone - have been lurking and read everything but not been posting.

I had a blooming awful fast day yesterday and I don't know why! I am 3 months in so you would think it was getting easier but I was grumpy, hungry, tired...if DH hadn't been home, I would have caved and scoffed the B&J ice-cream in the freezer but he talked me out of it. I was really tetchy with the kids and was in bed by 9.15 as I had just had enough by that point Sad I think probably had 700 cals yesterday so it was still a good day but I hated the way I felt all day Sad

The plus point is that because me and DH are both doing it, we can cheer each other up on our 'bad' days and the fact that DH was fasting yesterday aswell made me feel guilty so it did stop me diving headfirst into calorie-laden treats Wink

Sorry, this is a bit of a 'me me me' pity post but just wanted to write it down and put it behind me so I can move onto next week's fasts in a better frame of mind.

As you were Grin

ELR · 12/07/2013 10:06

Thanks everyone for the congratulations! It really does feel good to be in the 9's last time I was this weight was 13 years ago and that was after a food poisoning incident in India! I actually had an 8 week stall so keep it up ladies and gents, it takes a while but eventually it starts to go done again.
headintheclouds you are doing well don't despair and keep in mind that 12lbs and a dress size is fantastic. Also hope I'm not being rude but perhaps your age has something to do with it when my mum was around that age she really struggled to loose weight, it seemed to take her ages something like a month to six weeks to loose a lb. Then when she got to about 54 and fully finished the change she was able to start loosing again more easily. But regardless of that you are still in the healthy bmi and that seems to make it more difficult to loose quickly too.
Good luck everyone!

ELR · 12/07/2013 10:10

ceebee we all have days like that, whether you are one month, three months or six months in I think it's to be expected! But today is another day and if you fast on Monday like me it means 3 whole days of eating normally with a few treats thrown in. On any other diet you would of had to wake up this morning feeling fed up and still eat rabbit food but with 5:2 you can have whatever you fancy!

vikkisue · 12/07/2013 10:29

Hello everyone,
Well I made it through my second fast day and it was unite difficult - I'm hoping it gets easier as I really feel like I want to stick with this. I'd like to lose 3 stone which is a lot but I'm happy doing it slowly, also I'd really like to gain control over my appetite/eating. Talking of control I even went to the pub last night, on a fast day, and had a soda water!!!! Unheard of before! Feel very good about that, my thought process was that I had had such a hard time fasting that I wasn't going to ruin it in the eleventh hour for anybody!

Scales this morning show a 4lb loss since Monday, however, I shan't take much notice of that number and will weigh myself properly on Monday - I hope I don't put it all back on

PaisleyPashmina · 12/07/2013 10:31

Hello everyone, hope you don't mind me joining in. I've done 2 weeks of 5:2 so far and lost 8lbs...I'm really pleased. I need to lose around 5/6 stone, will this be achievable with this WOE?

It's 15 months until I get married so I'm hoping I will have reached my target by then. I love reading how everyone is getting on, spurs me along on fast days to know I'm not alone!

BsshBossh · 12/07/2013 10:33

BetsyBell those are truly inspirational stats, well done!

vikkisue · 12/07/2013 10:35

Wow! Betsy, those stats are fantastic, you were about the same weight when you started as I am now, I'd love to do as well as you - well done you!!!

PaisleyPashmina · 12/07/2013 10:37

Well done Betsy that's fantastic!

QueenBoudicea · 12/07/2013 10:38

Morning all - lovely to hear of peoples overall weight loss. Sometimes its easy to focus on weekly losses/gains and you lose perspective of the bigger picture. I'm just finishing my third week and will weigh in tomorrow morning. FD for me today.

Woke up this morning feeling leaner - although only 1lb weight loss so far. Lost 2 in the first week and then up again.

Felt spurred on to do some exercise so have just squeezed in 30 day shred and TA arms workout.

Meal plan for today is:

Thai skinny soup - 240 cals
King Prawn mixed salad - 230 cals

Good luck all :o

AphraBehn · 12/07/2013 10:54

Morning all, I sympathise with those struggling to fast yesterday. I had the opposite problem in that it was a NFD and I couldn't stop eating. I now know that I can't limit myself to a few spoons of Greek yoghurt with honey, I have to eat the entire tub so I just won't buy it anymore.

I really need today's FD. Am struggling a bit at the moment but it's not proper hunger just peckishness. I need to something to occupy myself I think.

Dotty342kids · 12/07/2013 11:16

That's brilliant Betsy well done!!

mehefin · 12/07/2013 11:23

I have found the last couple of weeks really difficult but this morning I have had a light bulb moment.

July and August I am going to do 16:8 because I have a garden bursting with fruit and veg and I want to eat it ! Having watched the channel 5 programme this week I realise that this will be a feast of micronutrients which I'm sure I need after the long winter.

Fasting usually energises me but I have found the opposite in the hot weather. I don't want cake nor strangely ice cream but I feel better if I eat more regularly so I'm going to enjoy the courgettes, beetroot, beans, berries, peas, salad ........etc! And look forward to longer fasts in the Autumn

I think this will be part of an annual cycle which makes sense to me

HairyPotter · 12/07/2013 11:37

Hello, can I join you all

I weighed myself this morning and I am the heaviest I have ever been. Sad. I already knew as my work clothes are getting too small and we were off out for the day yesterday and none of my usual summer standby trousers fitted. Blush.

Enough is enough. So here I am. I dabbled with this a few months ago but stopped when I didn't lose anything in my 3rd week. I now realise that I was wildly overeating on the feed days.

I'm really serious this time and intend to hang out here as well as exercise. I've done shred and half of couch to 5k so will possibly do both. Any recommendations?

I'm 5'5 and a whopping 13'8 Blush. I'm putting this here to remind me when it gets tough. I can reread and remember why I'm doing this.

In the very short term, I haven't much in the house due to holidays so if anyone has any low cal recipes involving parsnips, I would be very grateful. Grin It's that or a risky trip to Sainsburys!

Off to read my way through all the recipes threads now.

EagleRiderDirk · 12/07/2013 11:41

mehefin I think that if this woe teaches us anything it is to put faith in our bodies. If that is what your body is telling you then go for it! Especially as its healthy, obviously I wouldn't be saying that if you were talking about a diet of fried chicken and chips.

Apologies to all FDers on the above point (on my mind as I'm having that tonight!!!!!). The lack of sleep has really knocked my appetite - nearly at 16hrs since last nights dinner and still not feeling it - so OH suggested tonight be a calorie laden treat for me. Am intrigued to see how much of it I will actually get through. Also, this is odd as lack of sleep normally makes me want to go carb and chocolate crazy. Am listening to the body!

EagleRiderDirk · 12/07/2013 11:44

hairy don't feel so bad, I was extremely happy to get to 13'8 (and 5'5 too). Hope it goes better for you this time.

EagleRiderDirk · 12/07/2013 11:47

*and I am 5'5 too

I don't weigh 5st 5!

MissUnicorn · 12/07/2013 13:14

Hello Peeps,

Good luck fasters, hope you have a good day.
Well done anyway Dotty, you could have put on. Thanks
Wow Betsy Congratulations Thanks
Welcome Paisley, I reckon it's possible, but I'm sure one of the more experienced faster will say so too.
Hairy we're about the same weight and the same height. Good luck!

Short story
I'm kind of 0.8lb down from last week, but not really sure if I should count it.

Long Story really TMI; from the beginning

I woke up feeling dehydrated, but wanted to weigh myself with "nothing in". I weight 191.6 and was a bit miffed because last week I was 191.4.

So I had a drink of water, and started doing my Callanetics session. Now the first few exercises focus on the upper body and while I was doing it I was burping like crazy. Then I went to the loo (number 1). I decided to weigh myself again and I was 191.4.

I then carried on with my exercises and was burping throughout the whole session. I weighed myself again when I finished and was 190.6.
Confused

Talkinpeace · 12/07/2013 13:29

Betsybell
those stats are an inspiration. Well done.

Head in the clouds
I'll agree with the other points you have had. Try to maintain for a couple of weeks. Actively plan you food as if you were at your uber ideal weight, trying not to gain any more ever, but not to lose any.
All I will add is that if you can up your exercise on fast days - even blitz housework is good - then your body will HAVE to draw on reserves, and you'll get toned.

Hairypotter
Welcome aboard. There are many people starting on the journey and travelling through your weight. This is THE place to get support to be where you want to be.

Mintyy
You OK? Come and rant. If you want, start your own thread on this board (so the AIBU lovelies never see it) and we'll run through what the quack said.

In the mean time
WineWineWineWineWine tonight YAY!

mttum · 12/07/2013 13:39

TIP, are those 125ml or 250ml Wines?

Oh well, who's counting tonight, anyway Grin

Talkinpeace · 12/07/2013 13:40

750ml Blush

EagleRiderDirk · 12/07/2013 13:42

Grin tip

AmericasTorturedBrow · 12/07/2013 15:47

Wow Betsy those are some impressive stats!

Yesterday's NFD turned into a binge day, dinner at a friends tonight so I'm going to try to combat it with doing 16:8 then normal FD tomorrow as my 3rd this week
