Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 Thread number 20! Officially a score.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done Laurie and SAF, great way to start the week! (apart from the hangover!)

Had last week off, as had a weeks holiday from work for half term, and I'm back at 10.4.25. Not for long though! Fast day today, I'm a few glasses of water down already, I intend to pee this weight off! Had a week of lots of gardening, so was finding I would get to mid afternoon, then suddenly be starving after working all morning. Not looking forward to getting back to normal, to be honest!

Plan slightly amended - have made a soup at an estimated 250 cals. I will have half of this with my Mil who's doing it with me.

Had 70 cals of milk in my cups of tea. I may discount that as I'm breast feeding.

My dinner will be brown rice and chicken stir fry with pal choi and mange tout. How much brown rice depends on how much soup I have. If brown rice is 362 per 100g then 50g is 171g. Plus the chicken and veg im easily up to 500cals. If I have the soup better make it 25g brown rice.

Apols for me me posting - just trying to keep my resolve!

Enjoying it so far as its a goal and that's fun, but not that hungry yet!

It's fantastic doing it with my mil too. Really helps.

Xx

Hi all, I'm fasting today, had small soup for lunch and a few nibbles (Tamari mix) through the afternoon - I know, all wrong but I was RAVENOUS and at work so bored out of my mind (currently in a job I loathe).

Anyhow, home now and just fed the kids their tea, I'll have veggies for dinner later on with dh (who will also have roast pork and garlic bread Envy)

Well done Laurie on losing. Alm I've done this WOE for the past 3 weeks and lost precisely 1/2lb. I'm hoping that all the weight will just fly off when I'm not really looking.

Morning everyone.

Back to things today. Average weeked of indulgence.

So enjoying a food free day today. I've got a handful of water biscuits to nibble on at late lunch and then sainsburys chicken arribiata for lunch.

Well done everyone on losses. I'm hoping once this horrendous TOTM passes I will see a drop. I've had a few compliments from people so that has been nice and motivational if the scales haven't!!!

First day today! Had a cup of tea in the morning, and am trying to stick to water for the rest of the day.

Will have an evening meal about 6-7 I think. Some salmon or grilled chicken with some roasted veg.

How many ppl get close to the 500?

If i have less does it matter?

Hello everyone.

I've had a week off fasting due to birthdays and anniversaries etc. Weighed myself again today and still 74kg. So I've shifted a measly 2lbs in an entire month. I suppose at least it hasn't gone up, but it's a bit disappointing. Fasting today and have so far had nothing to eat. Will go and have a cup of tea soon, then the plan is chicken fillets and tomato for lunch and some fruit later.

EagleRiderDirk · 03/06/2013 11:03

tony I dont often get near 500 on fast days. I used to when I had more meals, but as I've found having one meal easier overall I don't often use the 500 cals in a day. I quite like planning it like that, just in case I have a day where I really struggle and maybe need to throw something extra in.

Hi, can I join?
Second week, though was a funny first week as did one full day, then one 2pm-6pm as I had various lunch and dinner the rest of the week.
So first proper week this week. I had hot water with lemon (and managed to avoid eating my baby's leftover banana and shredded wheat) then ran 4 miles. Mum staying tonight and also doing it so will make stir fry veggies with king prawns, cashews and lime/fish sauce/soy sauce, which I think it about 250 cals. So that leaves me 250 ish for lunch, which doesn't sound too bad!

I had a very gluttonous weekend from thurs night - cooked eton mess with double cream twice, plus a fish pie with full mllk, double cream and loads of cheese and had chips 3 times. Oi vey! It was actually a relief to get to monday and fast day! Working today so baby at nanny share which means I avoid the danger zone of eating half his lunch and dinner.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 03/06/2013 11:32

Tony, I often finish dinner well under 500, but then I have a banana or a glass of milk to go to bed feeling full.

Or popcorn. Contemplating popcorn now...

welcome polly

Fast day for me too after a weekend of plenty of exercise and also plenty of food! Got my coloured skinny jeans on today which drew some compliments from colleagues this morning :) DP has lost 3st and he had a health assessment this morning with a metabolic age of 33 - he'll be 49 in a few weeks!! He hasn't done 5:2 but whatever he's doing is clearly working.

New York skinny butternut soup for lunch, then dinner is whatever I can find for

I am half way through my first fasting day , so far not too bad but decided that I will fall off the wagon if I get too hungry when I pick up after school so have had salad for lunch , tracked on mfp.

I have been trying to do WW for the last 6 months but I just find it so depressing having to point everything And feeling guilty all the time .This seems to suit me better in that I only have to be completely rigid for 2 days as long as I don't blow out on all of the other 5 .

Grin Eaglerider!!

I started this WOE at the beginning of March and have lost a total of 7lbs - so not much at all.

I must lose weight very slowly, as it took me almost 1 year to lose a stone with WW! (All back on and more...)

However, its great to see that I am not alone in my slow weight loss.

I also console myself with the following points:

  1. It could help guard against certain illnesses as I get older
  2. I am losing weight - just VERY slowly
  3. I am re-educating myself about my appetite, my food consumption and am confident that I will NEVER die of hunger

Good luck to everyone who is fasting today - we are nearly there!

HI all, fasting so much easier when its warm, keeping busy not so!

mehefin have you got that size 12 jumper yet? I know, suddenly seems weird to contemplate the acquisition of jumpers!

eaglerider Victory! I think our sizes are heading transatlantic anyway so Smile.

blue2 at least it is coming off even if slow, and not as tedious as WW etc. I feel as though Ive discovered the secret to maintenance. Now, if I could just actually get to a weight worth maintaining.Hmm

alm71 well done for shifting an incredible 9 1/2 stone the hard way! Counting cals on nfds is bad enough. Did you get lots of plateaus?

outtolunch and Tony, keep going, you can have that tomorrow. Put the kettle on in the mean time and remember these fast days get easier very quickly. Keep with us.

Hi all,

Fast day today and have found it okay. Have eaten two meals tho, just very low calorie.

TOTM and I generally feel bigger and bloated.

Weigh in day for me is usually wednesday, but since it is Totm I don't know whether to give it a miss as I know I will be heavier and will annoy me!

Do others weight go up during Totm? If so when do you find it goes back down? Do you put water weight on before during or after, or all three?

Keep going fasters, eat well feeders

:)

i have eaten a whole pot of chicken and veg broth already - unlike me. i suddenly felt properly ravenous after feeling a bit weird and heady all day. still some cals left if i need more later but think i'll try and leave it at that.

tomorrow though i think i should try and have a decent 'eating' day with plenty of nutrition and a bit of fat in there. body didn't feel right today and i want to be fighting fit for op on friday.

Report
swallowedAfly · 03/06/2013 18:07

have thought again and not really fasting today now. will be a low cal day of under 1000 and i'll aim to do the same tomorrow i think. i've just prepared a huge casserole with pork and tonnes of different veg, nuts and seeds to eat for the next couple of days. will aim for high nutrition, low cal for rest of week. must remember to take some meat out of the freezer to make another big casserole for the first couple of days out of hospital. easiest food to make and keep and reheat i think.

i am a bag of nerves this week and i don't think anxiety and fasting was combining well.

alm71 just to add to the chorus of wow! And you've kept it off for 6 years? You are amazing. I would say just keep being patient and consistent on 5:2 to lose the few lbs that have crept back on. You've lost and maintained so you can do it Smile. Keep at it for a couple of months. Be careful not to overeat on your non-fast days and stick to 500 cals or less on your fast days and you should be fine. What about exercise?
