GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well another disappointing weigh in! Plus another pound. Although it us TOTM so maybe some bloat from that rather than just actual gain!

On to the next! Well done saf and all those who have lost!

somewherebecomingrain · 31/05/2013 07:40

breadandwine great - I wil tell my mil. We are wondering if we can really do it!

emilythorne wow that's hardcore 500 cals. I gather bf equates to up to 600 cals a day and my 8 week baby is huge so I thought I should add in the 600. Maybe I will rethink that.

I'm 12 stone and a quarter - ish. Before my kids I was 10 and a half stone and would love to get back there, under 10 st would be incredible.

swallowedAfly · 31/05/2013 08:32

thank you Smile

you did postman - i keep wanting to call you jess btw Grin

2.2lbs down since my aargh i've got a date for surgery moment on wednesday morning. zero fast weds and yesterday i ate at least my tdee i reckon and plenty of good protein.

if i could keep it up at that rate it would be awesome - could get to 10st by next friday. seems unlikely though that it will keep falling off like that.

glad to hear people are going for massages - i really do think that's what got me over my plateau AND they are lush and it's a good reward.

spababe · 31/05/2013 08:39

Put on 3lb this week visiting friends for 4 days and the food was lush. However came home and did a FD yesterday and the 3lb has gone away this morning! Delighted! OH still has a headache he puts down to lack of food though :-(

Wedding Anniv this weekend so can't see me being very good so going to try for 4:3 next week as only managed 6:1 this week

NoForkNKnife · 31/05/2013 09:26

Gaining after a FD isn't really in the spirit of things is it Hmm?

.

monster54 · 31/05/2013 09:43

nofork feeling equally as rubbish! I started this week with such gusto! 5 weeks and nothing but bouncing and now gain fed up.com!

MelanieCheeks · 31/05/2013 10:37

Good weigh-in for me this mroning - just under 133 pounds (9 an'a half stone). Which is a whole stone off since Christmas (slow, but steady). And less than 3 pounds to go till goal. I'll be transitionaing to 6:1 once I get there.

Hang in there all your plateau-ers! I've a science degree, so I find it easy to think of things in their wave forms - a sort of variation around a point. Weight's the same, it buzzes up and down across a line, it isn't a neat straight line. You'll get there.

EagleRiderDirk · 31/05/2013 10:42

Well done Melanie

Fast day here. Ds has caught chicken pox of Dd so I have a miserable 8mo and a 2yo ball of energy who will not be quiet or behave it would appear today. I'm so desperate to bury my head in q large chocolate gateaux its beyond belief. The only saving grace is that there is no gateaux here and I can't go get one!

ElizaCBennett · 31/05/2013 10:48

Morning, weighed in this morning and another 1/4 of a pound off! First time I have dropped any extra weight days after FD. Can only put it down to being more aware of what I am eating and not thinking anything goes.

Breadandwine · 31/05/2013 11:27

my tail is bushier

I think that's a first for this WOL, Crystal! Grin

somewherebecomingrain believe me, it's very doable. Takes a bit of adjusting to in the beginning, but once your body has settled down and got used to it, it becomes very easy - IME! Smile

Great to see so many newcomers - and so many successes. And for those whose weight isn't shifting - console yourself with the other health benefits your body is receiving!

Here's something I guarantee will give everybody a smile this morning!

Cheers, B&W

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 31/05/2013 11:54

SAF, a few more grams and you'll be closer to 10 than to 11, how exciting!

Somewhere, welcome. Are you really going to fast with an eight week old? At that stage I'm still in white-knuckling-through-the-day mode, I can't imagine taking on a diet challenge.

Crystal, pub dinner sounds great, wait till I can offload Dd2 and ask me again.

applegate · 31/05/2013 12:20

hmmm I am on my second fast day this week and feeling a bit exasperated, i have been doing this for 6weeks now and lost a bit initially and nothing for past 4 weeks, just bouncing really. I know from reading on here this is common but just so annoying. I want to lose 7lb more and I guess I had hoped to be on the way to it by now.
Anyway I will stick with it as I hate other diets and this is a woe that fits into normal life but just feeling a bit frustrated today......

Emilythornesbff · 31/05/2013 12:25

eaglerider that's a fantastic loss.

somewhere fwiw, I think you should do what you're comfortable with on your fasting days. The reason I stick to 500 is I "count" breastfeeding like exercise IYSWIM, so I don't "eat back" the calories.

My worry is gaining when I stop feeding. I am hoping to just continue with IF to avoid that.
Just had a tooth filling btw. That should stop the snacking Grin

plecofjustice · 31/05/2013 12:28

Discovered dehydrated cabbage chips yesterday! So much effort to eat, low cal and tasty - great for NFD's!

NoForkNKnife · 31/05/2013 13:54

somewhere my DD is 12 weeks. I manage around 600 calories in a FD. But I have gone upto 800.

emily last time I started losing once I'd given up bf. A lot of women find it easier to lose whilst NOT bf.

Think I'm prementrual. Only had one period since the birth but it was exactly 28 days ago today! And that's despite bf Hmm. Some people get all the luck. Least it explains the 0.4lb gain.

I'm planning the BBQ in my head. It's gorgeous weather here!

Emilythornesbff · 31/05/2013 15:03

Ooh nofork that's interesting. There is hope for me then Grin

mam29 · 31/05/2013 16:01

Bit of update here end of 3rd week and lost 1lb per week so lost 3lb in total.

At frst was bit dissapointed but hubby says I look slimmer.

I have pair of jeans that dont fit so that be good measure.

have least another 10lb to lose ideally in time for my birthday.

Had blip 1st week as went over 500 and struggled to get into it.

but last 2weeks only had 2 fast days a week.

I would like to do 4.3 and bit more exercise.

guess slow and steady weighloss best as more likly keep it off.

Really like flexibility of this diet and amazed it works.

ps think hormonal and tie of month can inpact as when I was on slimming world always had crap weighin that week.

headintheclouds · 31/05/2013 17:28

Disappointing WI for me today ,up by half pound... monster and applegate you are not alone..
I dont know why Im surprised though because that does seem to be the pattern with me..lose .5, lose.5 .stay the same..put on a half ...and repeat ad nauseum.
in total ive lost 11 lbs in 18 weeks or so, but only 1 lb down in the last 4 weeks! It is annoying .. especially when I know that Ive done everything properly and it seems to just drop off others. I really wanted to be another 7 lbs lighter for my holiday in August ..but I may have to settle for less at the rate Im losing .
Any further advice from long- timers appreciated.. I dont really want to do 4:3 , but I could up the exercise ..

swallowedAfly · 31/05/2013 17:39

my advice would be either a week off or a zero fast head or a massage.

struggling a bit. have had two marmite drinks. been a really busy day. not sure whether to go for a 500cal one or a zero fast. bit scared that once i eat/if i eat i won't be able to stop.

JB30 · 31/05/2013 17:51

Hi folks - 2 weeks and 4 fd's in. Is there such a thing as a pared down fast day? I'd like to fast tomorrow cause my fast day yesterday was rubbish, closer to 700 than 500 and I know next week I'll struggle to get 2 fd's in. Do you guys think there's any use on doing a slightly less strict FD - like a 600/700 cal day?
So annoyed at myself yesterday, I know I went only 200 over it was a rubbish white bread that's blocked things up, for tmi :(

Southeastdweller · 31/05/2013 18:00

Hey plec - where do you get them from? I haven't seen them in any supermarket here in the U.K.

ilovepicnmix · 31/05/2013 18:08

Hello everyone. Can I join you here please? Im 4 days into 5:2 and this is my second fast day. Finding it ok so far but then I'm always super motivated at the beginning of diets. I have a stone to lose to get me back to my pre pregnancy weight.

frenchfancy · 31/05/2013 18:35

JB30 there is no problem at all with it, especially if it is an extra one. I sometimes do what I call a mini-fast, ie no food for 24 hours, but then eat and drink normally in the evening.

JB30 · 31/05/2013 19:20

Cheers FrenchFancy, I'll give it a whirl!

monster54 · 31/05/2013 19:26

Big hugs head feel your pain, feeling super low about it all at the moment. Need to go and have a stiff word with myself in a dark corner.

I don't have any suggestions I'm afraid. I'm tracking. I'm eating 500cals etc. I've done 2 weeks of 4:3 with no luck.

Had a massage as saf suggested and right now I'm just sticking : o( sucks .....
