Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I've gone from 40DD to 38D. Its nice to have them nearer my chin than my lady parts Wink

Not sure whats going to happen as I go on as I've never been smaller than a D since I was 15. Last time I lost weight I ended up resembling Jordan without the pertness!

mam29 · 01/06/2013 18:13

LexingtonBear · 01/06/2013 21:02

Soooo...2lb gain this week, but...on the other hand, have started Couch to 5k and run further than I have in, oooh, 30 odd years; have comfortably worn a size 12 dress for the first time in, oooh, 6 years; and most astonishingly of all, have turned down pizza at tea time (albeit in part due to 4 year old dd yelling loudly 'no mummy that is not healthy'. So, hey, I'm happy, irrespective of those pesky scales.

meandmyfour · 02/06/2013 08:47

Aargh!! How can I be 2 pounds heavier than I was on Friday when for the last two days I've only eaten one meal a dayand way under my tdee.. (not intentional to have two consecutive v low cal days but just the way it's worked)
I don't understand how weight and my body works!!
I feel a bit slimmer so why don't the scales show that? Or at least stay the same rather than a gain!!
Happy Sunday everyone xx

meandmyfour · 02/06/2013 09:04

And just to add to my grumbles- due to being a bit under the weather and a couple of big distractions I've had four days in a row of approximately 20 hr fasts (and then just one meal)...surely that's great for fat burning and loss?
Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks

DeckSwabber · 02/06/2013 09:23

Weight does not = what you weighed the day before +/- what you ate yesterday! It includes fluid retention, what's in your gut, all sorts. Extra salt or hormones might mean more fluid. Exercise might mean extra muscle.

The main thing is that its downwards in the longterm....

swallowedAfly · 02/06/2013 09:23

many people have found their body needs the sharp contrast between fast days and non fast days. need to eat more on non fast days meandmyfour and make sure there is a distinct difference between them and fast days.

allegedly (hard to believe) i am 11.6.2 this morning so the loss that didn't turn up after fridays fast has turned up today as i expected/hoped.

today is a fast day again. i have some nice chicken and veg broth in the fridge that i may have tonight or i may do a zero day depending on how i feel.

akarucker · 02/06/2013 09:33

saf tell me you mean 10!!

swallowedAfly · 02/06/2013 09:52

oh god yeah! 10! 11 would be a shock!

I blog each week about my progress on 5 and 2. Here's this week's update.

wonderingagain · 02/06/2013 15:10

Voice of reason, Deckswabber, you made me relX again after finding ou this morning that my weight has stayed the same for a week.

Postman where is this bra intevention thread? I need to get my proportions back in order.

spababe · 02/06/2013 17:21

meandmy - if I eat very little for several days I find my metabolism shuts down and my body learns to survive on fewer calories and I don't loose weight. I think it is important to eat reasonably well on NFDs

postmanpatscat · 02/06/2013 19:37

wondering it was in Chat...there is a new way of measuring which means you measure under the bust, then bend forward at 90 degrees and measure round your boobs. If you post the measurements someone will do the work for you and recommend a size or two to try. It turned out I was wearing too big a band and too small a cup, so I went from 36A to 34D in one day, then kept shrinking as the weight came off. Latest thread is here

ceebeegeebies · 02/06/2013 20:54

thanks to the bra intervention thread, I went from a 38B/C to 36DD Shock I honestly didn't believe but bought a 36DD bra to try (the cups looked HUGE!!) and it fitted perfectly with no 'back fat' issues etc. Truly amazing Smile

TonytheFish · 02/06/2013 20:55

Hey all.

I am joining pretty late it seems to this!

Anyway...am 16 stone and only 5ft 2 and I hate how I am at the moment!

I have also bought an exercise dvd which I am wanting to do at least 3 days a week.

Just need to battle myself and my complete lack of motivation Sad I am my own worst enemy.

So, will have my first fast day tomorrow. Will have salmon and veggies for dinner.....any ideas to stop the vegetable being so bland and boring? (being a northern lass I have to stop myself pouring gravy all over them!) Was thinking of roasting with a tiny bit of olive oil and some garlic and herbs possibly.

postmanpatscat · 02/06/2013 21:08

Welcome aboard tony

Lots of calorie free seasonings available, and try fry light spray oil too. You might find this easier than you think and there is plenty of support here :)

Moominlandmidwinter · 02/06/2013 22:11

Welcome Tony.

Urggh. Cannot wait for FD tomorrow. Had a new low of 9.3.5 on Friday morning, but have over-eaten over the weekend. I cooked a chilli this evening, and finished everything on my plate, although I was already full. Now I feel horrible- bloated and sluggish. I've realised that I've become accustomed to really listening to my body's signals, and eating to my body's needs. After reverting to my old way of stuffing myself, I feel terrible. Back on the wagon tomorrow! Dreading weigh-in on Thurs.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

alm71 · 02/06/2013 22:22

Hi everyone!! Well done to all of you. I really know how hard it is to lose weight, been there and got the t shirt. I have lost a total of 9 and half stone through calorie counting. I have maintained this weight for the past 6 years but I'm carrying an extra half a stone since Xmas and haven't been able to lose it. I know half a stone doesn't sound a lot but all my clothes are tight and I feel really uncomfortable. I have been doing the 5:2 woe for past 4 weeks but haven't lost an ounce. I haven't gone mad on my NFD. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I have been on the website to work out my TDEE but am unsure which figure to stick to - is it the TDEE recommended when considering your activity level? Sorry to ask such a silly question. I really like the idea of the health benefits of this WOE but it would be lovely if I managed to lose a couple of pounds too.

INeedThatForkOff · 02/06/2013 23:02

Aherm. I disappeared because I went a bit off piste during my last fast, a week ago, and I haven't tried since. I'm blaming tiredness and too much work, but am ready to get back on it now. Fast started at 6pm.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 03/06/2013 05:15

Hi all! Hasy, welcome and wow. Always good to have another inspirational person on here.

Crystal, you fool, horrendous rainy Saturdays on one's own are exactly when one should presume on the hospitality of friends. Next time!

This morning I was back up 3 of the 4lbs that I dropped last week. That said: AF arrived, and brought with her both water retention, and a desire to eat the entire contents of my cupboard - even chocolate, which I don't normally like. A very, very, very indulgent weekend. No attempt at all to do any exercise; my steps fell to an average of 5,000 and I skipped fencing. Just generally dreadful behaviour. But I don't care; I feel confident enough in this WOE now to believe that a few days hormonally-induced indulgence won't be the end of me, and I'm back on the wagon today. 2pm and I haven't had a calorie - it really does get easier.

somewherebecomingrain · 03/06/2013 07:48

Morning. First fast day today. Gotta get my son off to nursery with no breakfast. Then the real work begins. Plan is - Going to eat my whole 500 cals in one meal around 4pm then get a super early night.

swallowedAfly · 03/06/2013 07:50

good stuff tortoise.

well done losers and welcome to newbies.

still 10.6.6 today. yesterday was a fast day fail as ds's club had a big football tournament and i ended up drinking way too much wine in the sunshine. feel suitably rough today and really not up for going back to work but hey ho.

best make today a fast day to make up for yesterday.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/06/2013 08:08

I've broken my 5 week fast!

Did 3 fasts Friday/sat/Sunday with dh and woke up with a 2 pound shift.

Feel fantastic Grin

Good luck to anyone fasting today - I'm not!

Bramblesinforrin · 03/06/2013 08:24

Well done Laurie.

Fd for me today. Feel like my baseline is working up, not down. Last one before short hol then back to it with a vengeance!

BetsyBell · 03/06/2013 08:52

Wow, impressive Laurie!

First fast day in a week for me, after some delightfully indulgent festivities with friends and sunshine Grin

I'm also stuffed full of cold (it never ends!) so it's going to be tough but it's also a busy day so will fly by.

brambles I know what you mean, same here - I am now at the back to it with a vengeance stage I hope :)
