GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

somewhere I have 500 or fewer cals on a fasting day.
No idea about NFDs. I don't count, just try (and often fail) not to pop food in without thinking about it.
I usually save all calories for supper time (although we eat early, around 5ish with 2yo DS) and of course i still take my postnatal vitamins.
I started on 9 April and I've lost 17lbs.
Dd is thriving.

Going without food is a challenge but the thing that makes me feel rough is going without sleep. Grin

I feel I should add that the "official" advice is to not fast when breastfeeding, but that appears to be based on a conservative approach rather than any empirical evidence IYSWIM.

Emilythornesbff · 30/05/2013 20:08

Oh,when I say I save all cals until supper I mean on a fasting day. Doh!

babyfatbutt · 30/05/2013 20:16

That's really good emily I started o the second of May and I've lost 2lbs. Harumph. Admittedly I've only managed one fast day this week and as it's my birthday on Saturday and my wedding anniversary on sunday and we're away for the weekend, my chances of fasting again this week are slim unlike me

Well 2 lbs off is still the equivalent of four packs of butter.

Have a great birthday/anniversary weekend.
How old is baby?
How much do you want to lose?

monster54 · 30/05/2013 20:38

melanie whaf are zero noodles? Are they any good? Where do you get them from?

fluffypillow · 30/05/2013 20:42

Thank you for the words of encouragement saf . It would be so good to see the 11's Smile . Can't imagine it at the moment, I've been in the 13's for the last 15 yrs at least Blush so it would be truly life changing to be slim at last.

So many inspirational people on here. This is such a supportive thread.

I had my 12th fast today, and it went very well considering it is half term. I treated myself to a lovely cup of filter coffee from Starbucks (with only skimmed milk) , it was really nice, and gave me the boost of energy I needed!

I went from 5pm yesterday until 5pm today without a meal. Had a marmite drink at about 3pm, and 2 white coffees(small amount of skimmed milk in each) in total. Apart from that it was herbal tea all the way! I feel like my body has adapted to fasting now, and I don't get light headed anymore. I do, however, still get a bit 'spaced out' around 3pm (hence the marmite drink!) .

Dinner was quorn chilli with rice and veg. I don't know why, but I just couldn't finish the rice, probably only ate half of the small spoonful I had Confused . I felt very full, very quickly. This woe is really changing my appetite.

Going on a picnic with DH and the children tomorrow, so will have some lovely treats. So nice to be able to join in with the family, without feeling resentful that I can't have the nice foods and then falling off the wagon as a reult

Good luck to all who are fasting tomorrow. Have a nice Friday everyone Smile

babyfatbutt · 30/05/2013 20:46

Baby was 2 a fortnight ago, it's just my little nickname for her :) Have a 5 yo DS too. I should probably lose about 8kg (16lbs?), last time I was that weight I looked good. Need to tone up my horrendous bingowings too.

Emilythornesbff · 30/05/2013 20:58

Ah 2is so cute.
16 lbs is totally do able. Good luck.

MelanieCheeks · 30/05/2013 21:32

Zero noodles, miracle noodles, slim pasta, eat water- they are noodles made from a set of yam (konjac?). You can get them at Asian groceries, holland and Barrett, or amazon.

They're ok-ish. Not as satisfying as real rice or pasta, but filling on a fast day.

Chocupid · 30/05/2013 21:54

SAF definitely ask your friend they will be glad to help, and you will need it, you don't want to harm your results after surgery by doing to much, there's a whole list of things you won't be able to do after surgery for a while, heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, driving etc. you will need to be gentle with yourself.
Ask me any question you like, be happy to help if i can with my experience
and well done for seeing of the 11's Grin

Chocupid · 30/05/2013 22:13

Oops meant 'off' the 11's

CrystalDeCanter · 30/05/2013 23:13

Hellooooooooo everyone! Rise n' shine! It's 7.30am here, so up an at 'em etc etc

Emily well done on the 17lbs in 7 weeks. Fabulous work. And Brambles a size 10 skirt is so cheering isn't it. I would hold it aloft and run round the shop screaming Grin.

A funny day here yesterday, dd aged 7 wanted to take one of our chickens in to Show & Tell, cue me chasing chooks around the garden for 30 mins attempting to get one in a box - it kept flying out in a blur of feathers and claws . I eventually got it in the car a bit late so was doing 900kms up the hill to school yelling at the bus in front. So STRESSFUL.

Otherwise all good on a NFD apart from a couple of post school wines with a friend - I was really tempted by a large packet of crisps but knew they'd make me feel shite, so stuck with a healthier dinner.

A NFD today, quite fancy the pub for dinner as DH out at the footy - Tortoise fancy it???? Or I'll have to try my sil.

ponygirlcurtis · 30/05/2013 23:45

Evening all (and morning Crystal!). Just popped in before I log off to report that I have officially lost 4lbs! I've been doing this WOE for just over 3 weeks, so that's about right, and I am pretty pleased! I am even more pleased with my current appetite (reduced) and attitude to food re snacking (not doing it really) and hunger (it wont kill me so I largely ignore it). Especially since the last few days have been a bit stressful - would normally have had me reaching for the chips and chocolate. But I've not. And not even wanted to. I've thought about it - but then thought, no, I'm not hungry, and actually I don't even fancy a packet of crisps.

I'm sure my halo will slip at some point, but it's good to know that I can be in control of my own eating if I want to be. Fast day tomorrow, then massage on Saturday (hoping for a boost effect now!).

Breadandwine · 31/05/2013 01:58

I should also add I'm doing it with my 75-year old mother in law who is living with us! Anyone else 75?

Yup! Been IFing for 15 months now. I feel like a 40-year-old.

A fit 40-yr-old at that! Grin

CrystalDeCanter · 31/05/2013 02:01

Great Breadandwine!

I had 3 compliments at school drop off this morning and my normal compliment count is zero Grin. I really think its this WOE, my skin is clearer, my eyes are brighter, I'm generally happier, my tail is bushier etc etc.

swallowedAfly · 31/05/2013 05:47

10.7.8lbs. woo hoo. fast day today.

CrystalDeCanter · 31/05/2013 05:51

Yay, well done SAF!

Emilythornesbff · 31/05/2013 06:21

Thanks crystal and well done on that crisp evasion. Quite a feat IMO.

ponygirl that's a great weight loss. Well done.

NFD here. I always feel good on the morning following a fast.
Will skip lunch today I think.

Good luck to today's fasters.

Emilythornesbff · 31/05/2013 06:22

Wow saf well done.

Southeastdweller · 31/05/2013 06:54

Well done saf and emily and anyone else with losses this week.

Half a pound off for me this week. I did 4:3 and I'm a little disappointed though I know what happened - overdoing it on NFD's. Work is awful at the moment - had the most stressful week since starting this WOL - and will be for another week and I just haven't been making enough good food choices. Going to finally find out my T.D.E.E today - I was reluctant to calorie count on my NFD's but think I should for guidance about what I eat. Thinking about emotional eating triggers as mentioned up thread would also probably be helpful.

On the positive side I'm at a new all-time low and now that I'm less body-conscious, I've decided to have my first ever professional massage in a few weeks - I'd love to hear of any recommendations of massauers (sp?) in or around London!

Enjoy your weekends Smile

postmanpatscat · 31/05/2013 07:02

saf I told you 10.7 was just around the corner, well done!

southeast a loss is a loss and feeling good about yourself is worth a few pounds on the scales, I think.

Bramblesinafield · 31/05/2013 07:14

Wow well done guys!

It's great when the compliments start, good motivation to keep on (although I doubt the motivations of a couple of people ...).

Still plateauing here at 10.5, target was 10.4 which I went beneath last week, so nearly there. I feel more chilled about it hearing others going through the same pauses - good to share.

EagleRiderDirk · 31/05/2013 07:24

Well don saf - maybe your body just needed to know about your op Wink

Well done all with losses.

I've now hit 1/3 mark on my overall weight loss goal today (started Apr 19, 26lb lost). Still some way to go, and I know its going to slow down but I'm happy for this speed as long as it continues.

Prawntoast · 31/05/2013 07:25

just over 1.5lbs off this week, think its a larger drop as only managed 100gs last week, so 9.12.4lb, definitely my lowest for a very long time!

Have a good weekend all.
