GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/05/2013 08:27

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I, aka do pledge, for the entire month of June:

  • To track calories on NFD, and not go over TDEE for the week.
  • To switch from ADF to a combination of 4:3 and 5:2
  • To not buy any chocolate, but not forbid sweet items 'should they find their way into my diet by other means'
  • If above sweet items should track me down by other mystery sources, I will not eat more than ONE serving
  • However, having looked at the calories in biscuits, and knowing that I am incapable of sticking to one serving, biscuits will be BANNED for June!
  • Alcohol will not be banned - life needs a few pleasures!
  • I will re-assess my pledge to self at the end of the month, and I will hope that by posting this, will feel somewhat accountable!

For years and years of trying different diets and woe, I have always reached my limit with them around the 3-4 month mark. I was SO sure it wouldn't happen on this woe, because it's the first time I've ever enjoyed it! But, it appears it has. I have gained tremendous amounts in the last two weeks, and all motivation seems to have gone. This usually also coincides with the time when people start to notice my loss and I start to get complements! Makes me give up - what the heck is that about??

Anyway, trying renewed vigor for June!

postmanpatscat · 31/05/2013 20:03

Aw, go for it aka you've done so well so far and you sound really committed!

I didn't really get stuck for any length of time but a few weeks of swapping one 500 cal fast for a liquid only one certainly boosted my weight loss. I'm now maintaining on 5:2 but with much less attention paid to TDEE than previously (though I have to admit I am 3lbs under goal weight so I don't think I've gone too mad!)

Busy day today and a late breakfast meant a meal missed, so even after dinner I still have plenty of room for a rocky road Chokablok, which I don't have to share because DP only eats Bourneville :)

BsshBossh · 31/05/2013 20:12

headintheclouds a few zero calorie 36 hour fasts got me out of my last stall and even though I resumed 500 cal fasts I kept on losing (to goal and then some!).

swallowedAfly · 31/05/2013 20:33

good for you aka. you could just do a couple of zero fasts - might be the jolt you need.

am now breaking my fast with a huge bowl of fresh prawns. funny how we think nothing of sticking a fortunes worth of chocolate or ice-cream or wine down our throats but eating a few pounds worth of prawns feels decadent Hmm

akarucker · 31/05/2013 20:53

saf you're so right - I spend a small fortune on chocolate (oh, let me rephrase that - I used to spend a small fortune on chocolate), but would never dream of sitting down to a tenners worth of prawns in one sitting, just for myself. Well, that can change for a start - to add to my list....I will spend what I would usually spend on chocolate, on a lovely healthy treat of something I would usually consider too extravagant! Wow, if I take that literally, I may find myself dining on lobster each night!!

ELR · 31/05/2013 21:20

Just saying hello, im on holiday in Croatia so not been reading the thread. Eating way to much but not drinking too much and walking loads so hoping im not going to over board!
Good luck AKA i be doing something similar on my return from holiday.

somewherebecomingrain · 31/05/2013 21:58

tortoise my 8-week old sleeps really well otherwise I'd not consider it!

nofork great - I'm not alone! How have you found it? I have mega cake cravings when bf!

breadandwine have conveyed your encouragement to my mil.

Sorry to hear how people's weight loss is stalling hope you power through.

For first fast day I'm planning to make some voluminous, low cal veg soup to eat through the afternoon - hopefully no more than 300 cals - then have a 500 cal dinner. That's my thinking anyways.

Unfortunately I'm already eating more in anticipation of my fast!

sausages51 · 31/05/2013 22:26

Well long time no post, work, short breaks etc. BUT despite gorging on hols etc.,v pleased to report have maintained 5:2 weight loss. Bizarre as I have been quite greedy. So, to all of those who are stalling/struggling,please continue. When I step on the scales I am forever stunned. By the way, just to prove my point I have recently eaten moussaka, fish + chips, copious amounts if lager and wine, nachos, etc.,and STILL maintained the weight loss. What an amazing woe. Do not give up folks.

Itsaboatjack · 31/05/2013 23:40

Sounds like a good plan aka.

saf excellent news about your op, hope you managed to get your childcare sorted.

Well done all the losers, and welcome newcomers.

So this week I fasted on Tuesday, ate ok but drank loads on Wednesday (work outing thing), Thursday had a hangover and worked through it with a bit of a carb fest. Today though I managed to fast again, had terrible cravings tonight and was very close to giving in to them a couple of times but managed to push through. Weekends I usually allow myself a few indulgences but seeing as I already did that on weds and thurs and shall try and keep this one a bit healthier.

CrystalDeCanter · 01/06/2013 01:12

Good morning.

I feel a bit down in the dumps this morning - prob as a result of a glass too many Wine's last night and dh being sarky before heading off to bloody Uni.

Anyway, what I really need to do is head out for a walk but am on my own with kids all day and the weather is terrible. Praps we'll all rug up and head out. Back later for hot drinks etc.

Emilythornesbff · 01/06/2013 07:02

akayou are so right about biscuits.
When I rule the world:biscuits and face cream commercials - Gone!

Hasywell · 01/06/2013 08:03

Good morning all, thought I would briefly delurk with an epic post as have reached another milestone!
I am 5ft 7in tall.
On January 1st I weighed 13st 1lb
Today (1st June) I weigh 11st 1lb
In clothes I have gone from size 14/16 to 10/12 (recently bought my first pair of slim fit jeans in a 12!)
So in six months I have lost 28lbs (2 stone), dropped clothes sizes and gone from a BMI of 28.7 to a BMI of 24.3.

I have stuck to the 5:2 basics, quickly discovered I feel better on fast days if I wait until the evening to eat. I did count calories on NFD until a month ago because I needed to reeducate myself, now I don't. I weigh daily (always have) and find that I can use this to keep a check on my eating habits and the bounces don't demotivate me as my official weigh in (I did change this from Monday mornings to the morning after second fast of week) generally shows a decrease. I very much subscribe to the 'no snacking' as, like others have discovered, my snacks calories were adding up to more than a main meal! However if I am out for coffee with a friend at the weekend, I do have a cake! From my journey below you can see that I did plateau but I kept going because I could feel my body changing still, took notice of the NSVs and more importantly I feel so much better on this WOL and in control. I have done one 4:3 and one 36hr but do not feel the need to do these regularly.

I am now only 5lbs from my initial target. I will then celebrate achieving that before setting a new target (something I hadn't thought would be achievable before this WOL). I will also be focusing my efforts on toning up those wobbly bits and building up upper body and core strength for my new sailing hobby! Losing 2 stone makes it harder to right the dinghy after capsizing!

For anyone getting stuck please stick with it, check what you are eating on NFDs and remember all the other health benefits you are getting!

My journey:
01/01/2013 13.1
14/01/2013. 12.13 (started 5:2 fasting)
21/01/2013. 12.11
28/01. 12.9
04/02. 12.8
11/02. 12.6
18/02. 12.4
01/03. 12.0
08/03. 11.12
15/03. 11.12
22/03. 11.10
29/03. 11.10
05/04. 11.10
12/04. 11.9
19/04. 11.7
26/04. 11.6
03/05. 11.7
11/05. 11.5
17/05. 11.4
24/05. 11.2
01/06. 11.1

Epic post over! As always thank you to all on these threads for sharing stories, recipes and the support that is given! Happy weekend all!

akarucker · 01/06/2013 08:12

Hasywell fantastic! Such an inspiration, thanks for sharing.

Well, looks like I will be stuck in bed ill today on my first day of renewed effort. Not such a bad thing food wise because I'll either make it a fast day if I don't feel like eating, or will certainly be below TDEE because feel crummy.

I did get to the scales this morning though - 5lb gain after falling off the wagon for a week. Nasty...

Bramblesinforrin · 01/06/2013 08:52

Well done hayswell. I like the idea of an official weekly weigh in - also a daily weigher as it helps me to understand how my body functions.

Aka it will soon come off. I had a week off for a holiday and am soon to do the same in the land of cheese, booze and cake. Most of it is undigested food, so I'm sure you haven't actually put that much back on. :)

I am finding tht I am much better when I keep low gluten - my body doesn't feel right if I eat too much, particularly bread ( :( ) - feels like my insides are covered in pin pricks.

DeckSwabber · 01/06/2013 09:31

Well, that was unexpected. Weighed in a 9.1, down from 9.10 previous low, after missing a fast day. Nephews were here for a sleepover so we had sausages & mash the night before, then instead of fasting I had pasta, cheese, homemade cake for lunch. Then I had cheese on toast for dinner. Was expecting a mega-bounce!

I think it shows that the WOE is not just about calorie deficit.

DeckSwabber · 01/06/2013 09:32

Meant to say 9.9, not 9.1 - that WOULD have been a miracle!

swallowedAfly · 01/06/2013 09:43

hassy that's only 5 months - even better. well done.

despite only eating a bowl of prawns yesterday my weight has stayed the same at 10.7.8. am guessing if i don't go too mad today i'll see the loss tomorrow instead. however i am now in the week before my period so all bets are off really.

bit of a bummer that it's this week but i figure keep on and do it whether it shows on the scales or not because it will be working and show up after the release of period? that's my theory. pre period causes constipation and water retention so the scales may not show the loss but the fat would be burnt none the less and when the p.m. symptoms pass that will be revealed? thoughts? i'm no scientist but logically that seems to make sense to me.

swallowedAfly · 01/06/2013 09:46

oh and aka - absolutely. i used to think nothing of spending £4 or £5 on a tub of ice cream and scoffing it so i'm not going to quibble about eating a similar values worth of good lean tasty protein. crazy really thinking nothing of spending money on crap that is bad for you and sabotages your longer term desires whilst balking at the price of decent fish or meat. i think that craziness lends support to the idea of 'addictions' to junk food.

swallowedAfly · 01/06/2013 09:47

sorry me again! deckswabber imo it is definitely not just about calorie deficit. certainly not how it's worked with me.

postmanpatscat · 01/06/2013 12:04

well done hasywell 2st in 5 months is great

deckswabber I was really impressed at first, but 1lb is still a step in the right direction! Doesn't mean 9.1 isn't possible at some point.

I don't know what the magic about 5:2 is, but it definitely works!

ceebeegeebies · 01/06/2013 12:21

Ok I need a pep talk Sad

I am a non-weigher but thought I would just weigh myself at the gym this morning. I weighed exactly the same as I did a month ago (the last time I weighed myself) Sad Sad

But I know I must have lost weight in that time as I am wearing trousers I couldn't do up a month ago, I can SEE that I am slimmer so why do the scales not show it??

Whenever I diet the scales are never kind to me...what crazy stuff is my body doing??

I know the lesson is to not weigh myself but I am still mega disappointed this morning. ..please come and give me a slap Wink

postmanpatscat · 01/06/2013 13:00

slap for you ceebee !

Would scales at home help, or make things worse? Did you measure yourself at the beginning?

EagleRiderDirk · 01/06/2013 13:30

Argh. After the fitting back in my bra nsv, I now don't fit in it the other way! So now I need to buy some temporary bras. Feel bad moaning though considering the amount of reduction posts of late!

NoForkNKnife · 01/06/2013 16:22

ceebee that would really upset me too. But fitting into smaller clothes has got to be a massive confidence boost Flowers.

I'm having an awful day. Combination of last minute FD, pmt (where the hell is it?) and trying to find some summery clothes to wear. I dug out some stuff that was loose last year. It's tight now. So depressing. I'm determind not to buy next size up but I feel like crap with little to no wardrobe.

postmanpatscat · 01/06/2013 17:40

Eagle what size? I have just upgraded/downgraded from 34D/C to 34B (having started the year at 36A before I stumbled across the bra intervention thread, though they'd have me in a 32E!)
