5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Welcome back headintheclouds, you might not be too bad if you stayed within your TDEE. I'm fairly sure I didn't (I blame the wine!). Going to use MFP this week though to ensure I'm staying within it on eating days as easy for me to tip over with the amount of chocolate that is still lurking in this house Grin
Catch up with all you lovely Monday fasters tomorrow!

BsshBossh · 07/04/2013 22:36

Woohoo, Fast Monday I'm coming for you! Grin

wildwater · 07/04/2013 22:39

Hi all. I'm writing this from the 'cupboard' where I'm camping. (We will be staying somewhere much more comfortable after tonight!)

All is going well and the stress is finally lifting off my shoulders. Three more nights at the beach then we're off.

Just wanted to check in foodwise. Yesterday was my usual fast day but I didn't take much notice...think I ate under 500 calories but the calorie-check site doesn't recognise what I ate!

That was: a banana around 9.30am with a cup of milky tea. Around 3.30pm I ate half a seafood fritter (that I was demonstrating how to cook) made of mussels, shrimp, a little flour, egg & milk - cooked on the grill. At 9pm I drank a very nice bottle of lager. Then at about 11pm I realised i was feeling a bit weird (rushing around all day and not eating much?) so I ate two squares of Lindt 85% coca chocolate. Felt better after that and went to sleep like a log.

Did I fast, or not?

I have no kitchen and no supplies to speak of out here anymore so the next couple of days will be even stranger. I'm planning to get LL to pick up sushi for dinner on his way home (he has been away for two nights leaving me managing the handover of business to the new owners). I do have some agria potatoes so will bake them with cheese & veges tomorrow night, when we'll be in a motel.

All our gear is packed but I will still have to go through everything again and try to get rid of probably half of it.Shock Must develop a different criteria for that as everything is now 'wanted' but I just can't have! An excellent lesson in letting go...

The weight loss is part of this. I am far less focussed on food than ever before in my life, thanks to 5:2. I am not FAT anymore so I no longer have to try to 'suck it up' or stand at a flattering angle. My new size 10 jeans which were a bit tight around the waist - creating a 'muffin' - are now fitting perfectly, with hardly a bulge. I love how they feelSmile

Another lovely early autumn day here. Sunny and still. Had a gorgeous walk on the beach early. Will miss that...

My computer is till linked to the shop system which is why I can still post here. Unsure about from now on...but whenever I can I will check in. I love the community & support available on this site. Ciao for nowThanks

Breadandwine · 08/04/2013 00:07

I'd call that a fast, WW! Sounds like you're in complete control - which is what this WOL gives you!

All the best for your move - exciting times ahead for you. Look forward to your posts when everything settles down. Smile

Mimi I'd echo what has been said about carbs on a fast day - you get much more bang for your buck with veggies. If I were you I'd check out the recipe thread - link in the OP - where there are many great fast day suggestions.

I do have a small microwaved potato (72cals for 100g) to accompany my chilli or curry, but the whole meal can be made with less than 300 cals.

I've just begun a 48 hour fast - by combining a 24 hour fast tomorrow with a mini-fast on Tuesday. So I'll have my 600 calories tomorrow evening, then nothing until a normal dinner on Tuesday evening.

Slightly concerned that I'll have 5 consecutive days where I can 'eat what I like'! Wink

Breadandwine · 08/04/2013 00:14

Sorry, GE, forgot - the ginger biscuits are highly recommended! All the others I've looked at over the past week - 4 or 5 brands - contain palm oil, so I was very happy to find these.

I intend to sample another 2 or 3 on Tuesday evening! Grin

peplum41 · 08/04/2013 01:28

Morning all,

bsshbossh what's a set point weight? And sorry if it sounds like a blinking stupid question, but did you really just lose 4lbs in almost 4 months? Well done for sticking to it.

saf I love your epic thinking aloud/ online posts. BTW I'm just knocking on the doors of the elevens, (12:2 but it bounces) so would love to know if you can see many changes, like a different dress size etc

Betsy good to see your name again, I'm sure a few good feeds will set you up for a easy fast. Let us know if a break makes it easier to get back on the wagon, or if its harder because your stomach is used to regular food. I instantly feel like I've gained half a stone when I eat normally, but I haven't when sneak a look on the scales.

swallowedAfly · 08/04/2013 08:08

headintheclouds - i'm sure it'll soon drop off again if there is a little gain - could well be bloaty feeling digestion rather than actual fat gain.

breadandwine good luck with the long fast.

peplum - i was squeezing in 12 trousers and jeans and the occasional 14 - now a very secure, plenty of room 12 and i don't think 10 would be that far off. i think the republic skinny jeans i'm wearing may be a 10 but they're with long tops only due to the bulge for now.

10.13.6 - note that 10 - very much only just but woohoo!!!

ended up only having the roast potatoes and veg that i had at my mum's at 3 then a marmite drink in the evening so that must've been under 500 and somehow i'm 2lbs down today. i know it's not banked but at least i've seen it finally Grin

swallowedAfly · 08/04/2013 08:09

(i'm 5ft6.5 btw peplum so obviously the sizes reflect that - if i was shorter i guess i'd be in a bigger size as less room to spread the weight over)

Minimammoth · 08/04/2013 08:22

Well done saf. It a real moral booster to drop below the stone mark. I have been pretty stuck over the last couple of weeks bouncing along with 10. 9 being average base line. Did have a boost on Saturday when I managed to fit into a size 10 skirt. ( although sizing seems pretty random amongst brands).
I am going to be fasting today.

Minimammoth · 08/04/2013 08:23

Morale

postmanpatscat · 08/04/2013 08:56

saf hooray! Knew you could do it, and as we know, no rhyme or reason as to when it happens. Hope your bounces are small ones and the 10 stays at the front of that number :)

Interesting what others say about clothes sizes...I'm 5ft 4 and now 9st 3 yet still find some size 10s too small, especially M&S trousers. In my head I am still a size 12.

sweetkitty · 08/04/2013 09:00

Monday fast here today hopefully not too hard. Had tea and a glass of water for breakfast plus multivit and the pill Grin

I've stretched to 1pm without eating so am going to try for 2pm and stretch an hour each fast until I get to 24 hours.

At home with 4 DCs today going to be difficult.

swallowedAfly · 08/04/2013 09:02

i think if you are smaller any spare weight is more bundled up whereas when you're a bit taller it has room to spread out - especially if you're smaller and have a tendency to apple i guess. 9st3 sounds lovely postmanpat.

way tmi but having finally been to the loo after a couple of days of my digestion being slow i couldn't resist weighing myself again Grin 10st13. that gives me a little more bounce room.

there was rhyme or reason - i got my period yesterday - same thing happened last cycle so i guess i better get used to looking at my weight cyclically rather than weekly. first half of cycle i lose, second half i really struggle to.

SlipperyNipple · 08/04/2013 09:34

Well done saf! I'm thinking of weighing less often so I am more likely to see definite losses....
But I find it very difficult to weigh less often than a couple of times a week. I would rather stretch to two week weigh ins.

Monday fast today and feeling positive. Last time I just at 8 pm and that was fine. Although I have two coffees with a dash of milk in....so not quite a proper fast - but good enough for me.

I've basically lost 5 pounds in a month. Very. Happy for that to continue.

ellenbrody · 08/04/2013 09:35

I'm going to fast today, DD's are at my parents, DH at work - I've got a blardy assignment and dissertation to write. Hope I can keep away from nibbles! Might pop out to get milk if I need distracting, or even change the beds!
I will have some salady bits and ham for lunch and an omelette for dinner
Now I've told you lot I'm doing it, I've got to havnt I??!!

SlipperyNipple · 08/04/2013 09:47

It will be a breeze Ellen.

BetsyVanBell · 08/04/2013 10:00

Whoop! SAF! Great news, well done Grin

Peplum I didn't fast today, toast and banana called to me, then toast & marmalade, and then some cheese Shock can't believe it's not even 10am yet (though I have been in a slightly different time zone!!)

I did weigh in yesterday and had in fact maintained my weight. However, I ate and drank loads yesterday and appear to be today too so am anticipating a post holiday scale increase!

Tomorrow WILL be a fast day Wink

swallowedAfly · 08/04/2013 10:06

thank you bvb - and well done on maintaining. i'll fast with you tomorrow. taking a project group out to lunch on wednesday fully paid for with the funding i've won so best i fast the day before i think Wink

monster54 · 08/04/2013 10:12

Yeyyy saf....

I also consider my cycle really controls my loss. I've noticed I hold it half the cycle and loss the other half!

Miffytastic · 08/04/2013 10:21

SwallowedAFly that's great! I said you were nearly at the psychological 10 barrier didn't I?! :D

Well I weighed myself again yesterday like a fool and I was up another pound! what is that about?
So at my lowest about 3 weeks ago I was 10-3 and a bit then the following week 10-5, bought some new scales and then Friday was still 10-5 and now 10-6.... help! I am still fasting 2 days a week but TBH being a bit more relaxed on my feasting days but I counted the other day and despite thinking I'd eaten rubbish (tunnocks teacake, chocolate etc) I was still under TDEE
Both scales were electronic BTW and in the same bit of floor.

Anyway, am fasting today and will probably do Wednesday as my second this week. Just trying not to feel disheartened..

ELR · 08/04/2013 10:28

Well done saf finally into the 10s bet it fees good!! 9s next.....
Fasting today so just having a black coffee then going to make butternut squash and lentil soup for lunch and got steak, green beans and butter bean mash for tea.
Just put my workout clothes on hoping it will get me in the mood for a walk or something but so far I'm just sitting here! Kids are arguing and driving me mad!!

greenfig · 08/04/2013 10:46

Morning all, back to it today as the babes are back at school. I did 5:2 in the hols but not sure about TDEES on the other days as we've had a lot going on. I've read only this page but will catch up if I have time later. Just wanted to say a HUGE well done to saf & hi to everybody else. Fasting today, hope it goes ok. I wasn't well yesterday so ate a bit oddly- may find today a struggle.

FirstTimeFaster · 08/04/2013 10:51

Hi all! This is my very first fasting day which im very excited about actually! Any tips on how to keep motivated on a fasting day would be very much appreciated :)
am i right in thinking i can drink as much water as i want throughout the whole of the day? sorry if thats a silly question!! Good luck to every one else fasting today :) x

nearlyniftyfifty · 08/04/2013 11:01

Morning all
Back fro 10 days in France, lots of wine/cheese/yummy bread and an occasional burst of energy by whooshing down a ski slope Grin to the wine/cheese....Wink
Anyway, no fasting and am now back and embarking on a fast day so a quick and nervous weigh in....1lb gain!! Yippee, never known before so am delighted..usually i'm looking at 5lb gain..so onwards and downwards to all happy fasters today xxx

Dotty342kids · 08/04/2013 11:05

swallowedafly that is BRILLIANT! Well done - ooh I'm so pleased for you. Can't believe the size clothes you're in though - I'm now comfortable in a 14 but nowhere near a 12 yet. Must be the extra three inches height advantage that you've got over me! Well done anyway.
Fasting for me today, thank goodness.
firstTimeFaster, have a bottle of water with you at all times and drink it frequently. Every time you have hunger pangs tell yourself you can just go another half hour. And then another, and another. If you can get to 16hrs from your dinner last night then you've acheived what Dr M says is a good, health benefiting fast. Any longer than that is obviously great too but on your first day, getting to 16hrs is an acheivement!
Use your 500cals wisely - salmon / chicken / lots of veggies gives you the most food for your calories. Carbohydrates will provide very short satisfaction! Good luck and enjoy it.
