5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks for the advice and support on my fast day turning into not only an eat day, but some awful food crazed binge day. Honestly don't know what's come over me...and the day's not over!

BUT, in the past, when I have 'blown my diet' with a bad day, I literally have thrown in the towel and given up. I do feel today though, that I'll be able to chalk today up to one of those things, and get back on track tomorrow. If that's the case then that shows that this woe has transformed my wol. It took me many years to pile on the weight, I can't expect to be over it in weeks. It's going to take time. It was just a setback today with the 'eat all I could find' mentality. I thought I was done with that.

Ok, so thinking aloud here...it's not all over. I may have gone drastically over TDEE today, and I may not lose this week, and i may have got into a bad mindset today, but that's ok. This is not permission to go off track. It's a blip that can be fixed.

Sheila · 05/04/2013 17:38

Storm - I'm new to this but I don't think it can be a good idea to fast when you're ill.

Sounds like your body is telling you it needs food, so give the fasting a rest until you're better.

Hope that is soon - tonsillitis is grim, poor you.x

ElizaCBennett · 05/04/2013 18:06

Afternoon all - back to normal now after 4 days enforced fasting due to a bug. Lost 5 lb while sick but a couple went back on when I started eating again. Still 10 lb from goal weight. Strange thing though is that I can now wear clothes that I was last able to wear when at my goal weight years ago!

Goes to prove that the scales don't know everything!

NurseEzzzaChapel · 05/04/2013 18:06

storminabuttercup, I tend to listen to my body when I'm ill. I never force myself to fast if I'm ill but sometimes the messages I get from my body (lack of appetite or only appetite for veggies or fruit) suggesting it actually wants to fast, in which case I carry on and fast.

Chipstick10 · 05/04/2013 18:23

Hi all
I do two fasts a week. Mon and wed. Got up this morning and after walking the dog I decided I didn't feel hungry. The day went on and up to this point not felt like eating. Will use it positively and have just 5 or maybe 600 cals for dinner. An extra fast and no hardship. Yay.

wildwater · 05/04/2013 18:24

ELR We're moving to Argentina, where LL is from. We plan to be there before the end of November, probably sooner.( I must improve my Spanish...)

Last time on the computer here in what used to be our home, now somebody else's. Will be unhooking & packing it up soon.

My fast went OK on Weds. I was so flat out I found it hard to find time to eat anyway. And then I was so wound up I had to actually force it down. I didn't have my normal energy and had to keep reminding myself to breathe.

Everybody commenting on my weight loss now. Guess it's a shock to people who haven't seen me for a while. Not going to my head though - it was shocking of me to have piled on all those kilos in the first place!

I hope to check email etc regularly somehow, and to post here when I can. Thanks Smile

Inlovewithchocolate · 05/04/2013 18:45

Hi everyone. I haven't posted in a while, purely because I have been embarrassed with myself as I have over indulged. I'm trying to get my mindset right now. Plan to restart Monday and do this properly. Am sick of yo yoing. I have about 10lbs to lose and I just can't shift it. I need to focus on feed days and not over indulge. Everyone else is doing so well and I applaud you all.

storminabuttercup · 05/04/2013 18:50

Thanks nurse and sheila I think I will see how I feel soon and maybe eat something else x

HotPanda · 05/04/2013 19:02

Oh WW hope it all goes well.

I'm on an eat day, and made good choices so far, but it's Friday night so we have ordered a curry. I'm going to eat now, as it is fast day tomorrow.

It's also weigh in day tomorrow, so I'm interested to see what happens. I lost 4lbs week 1 and 1lbs week 2.
Good news is that I put on a suit for work this morning and the jacket did up perfectly. 3 weeks ago it strained across the bust.

peplum41 · 05/04/2013 21:29

I was going to fast today honest...ackarucker feel the same as you, to cut a long story short a pub lunch, guiness and somehow wandering round sainsburys whilst slightly inebriated and buying a huge party sized cheesecake are involved.(im a sucker for something with a reduced sticker on it)
inlovewithchocolate hope you feel able to move on now you've confessed! Wink

chipstick yes I love a day like that, wish they were all that easy.

OOh btw aka, the insomnia has worn off sleep like a log now, but the relentless energy has also gone-miss that. Hows that side with you? Im also somewhere in the 20s fast wise, so must be some biological phase we need to pass through.

Paintingrainbowskies · 05/04/2013 21:31

Evening!

Fast day yesterday and I did my first 24 hour proper fast, from about 8pm to 8pm I had only water and one cup of black coffee then ate 550 cal chick pea curry. It was surprisingly easy yesterday. It was my 14th fast and it just went so easily. I've had much harder fasts and expect them to come again but I am amazed with how easy and well this way of eating is fitting in with my life.

I've lost 11 pounds but I just feel great and really in control of my eating in general.

I read some of the old threads and really took on board some advice that TIP gave about not snacking and if you do it should be in place of meals rather than in addition. Been trying to follow that, for example, Friday is always scone day in work, I always used to have my breakfast at home then mid morning we would get scones or pastries and I would have that too. It seems so logical but it never occurred to me before not to have breakfast on a Friday in case I starved before mid morning! Grin

peplum41 · 05/04/2013 21:38

for those down under, wildwater you are well brave, all the best.
nettnett Envy your trip round queensland and all the Wine and restaurant meals, though it is nice to get home at the end. Theres a few tv shows here about uk folk moving to Oz or Nz, always love watching them. Seems such an outdoor way of life.

BsshBossh · 05/04/2013 21:50

Ooh Painting I like that suggestion of TIP's to treat snacking (if you do it) as a meal and then skip the actual meal. Thanks for the reminder.

lemonstartree · 05/04/2013 21:50

Hi everyone.

I started this WOE today. Managed well, considering! definitely relied a bit on diet coke to fill me up but had a chicken and vegetable stirfry this evening with lemon juice and pepper which tasted very very good !

I have decided to give this a try as have recently put on weight again. About 3 years ago I lost 3.5 stone or so on a low carb diet. in the last year a stone has crept back on and my BMI is above 25 again... I'm hoping for some steady weight loss along with other health benefits. I'm planning 3 fast days this first week (I'm on holiday) and then reckon 5:2 will be ok.

I have found reading all your tips and ideas really helpful :-)

sweetkitty · 05/04/2013 22:46

Hi all haven't been around much and have had a rubbish week fast wise, I had a migraine for 3 days which on the last day left me bed ridden for half the day, yesterday had a day out, today had a mini fast though.

Just going to watch what I eat at the weekend the back to it on Monday.

Happy weekend x

HotPanda · 06/04/2013 07:03

Fast day for me, and I woke up far too early! I hope it doesn't make the day drag......

ellenbrody · 06/04/2013 08:11

Morning all. As some of you know, I'm trying to maintain now by doing 16:8 and sticking to TDEE, I may have failed this week Sad.

I managed 3 days where I went 16 hours, but struggled with the others. I have stayed close to my TDEE but have often gone over ( its only 1450, very mean). This is the 2nd week I've been about 500 cals over the weekly allowance and I've put in 1 lb Angry.

The thing is, I'm worried about the next week as I know if I fall off the wagon it will be bad, and the school holidays don't help do they? I'm almost looking forward to going back to work as I find I can fast quite easily when in a routine.

Oh well, moan over! Will try and have a normal weekend then see what next week brings.
Have a nice Saturday everyone.

Itsaboatjack · 06/04/2013 08:28

Morning all,

I'm with you with having a moan this morning Ellen. I think I may need to stay away from the scales for a while. I normally weigh everyday, and can handle it when they bounce around as I know it's to be expected. This weeks been a strange one though and my heads not quite been in control the whole time. I've had two failed fasts, but managed two good fasts, I'm pretty sure I haven't gone massively over my TDEE. But this morning, after fasting successfully yesterday I've gone up 3.5lbs since weighing on Wednesday morning also after a fast. :(

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Southeastdweller · 06/04/2013 09:20

blonde You may be eating too many carbs on your feed days and not enough protein.

I think you need to listen to your body more. Before you get to the bursting stage, when you get that full feeling is when you should stop. But I know if you've issues with food it's sometimes hard to differentiate between the two.

peplum41 · 06/04/2013 10:31

Hello all

greeneggs thanks for the links at the OP, think I may have glanced at them when I first started reading these threads but its like information overload. Now I understand more of the terminology Ive had another look at some of the links, especially the interviews with Dr Varaday which answered some questions i had about insulin. Feeling motivated again after yesterdays blip Smile

Flobbadobs · 06/04/2013 10:54

Morning all, well the first fast day didn't go too badly, did my wii ft execises again first thing and apparently I have lost 2lbs overnight... Am not entirely convinced that the scales on the wii are accurate tbh!
It's an education seeing the calorie content of the food I'm eating, calorie counting isn't something I've realy done before.

kiwidreamer · 06/04/2013 11:02

I weigh once a week on a Saturday morning, cannot cope with massive flux during the week! So after my first week of fasting, that started with Easter, I'm three pounds down which I'm absolutely chuffed about. Of course I fasted yesterday so I know its not entirely realistic but if this carries on over the next month then there will be realistic weight loss... fingers crossed but its looking good so far.

DH on the other hand ate like a maniac on his non fast days and put on weight this week!!!! Hopefully that's a bit of a lesson learned for him Wink

frenchfancy · 06/04/2013 11:46

flobadobs it is perfectly possible that you have lost 2lbs overnight. Remember it is not just fat that has weight. Everytime you go to the loo, sweat or even cry you lose weight. That is why you should always weigh yourself at the same time on the same day wearing the same clothes.

frenchfancy · 06/04/2013 11:48

ellen are you sure your Tdee is right? It seems very low. Could you increase your activity level a bit to increase it. I might make it easier for you.

Dotty342kids · 06/04/2013 11:58

Hello all, I'm back!!!
So, had Easter Sunday with all the associated goodies and then five days holidaying up in the Lake District with my kids and my mother - a combination almost guaranteed to make me want to eat myself to death Grin. So ate a fairly large amount though nothing too horrifically sweet / fattening other than whatever was needed to get me up that day's mountain. Trouble was the alcohol though as I don't normally drink much at all but my mum is always wanting to share a bottle of wine in the evenings so I know I overindulged there.
I really missed my normal fasting routines and couldn't wait to get to today's fast to rediscover that nice "empty" feeling and give my body a break from the endless food. Did get on scales this morning and only 1-2lbs up so nothing too dreadful so far.
Only 2 weeks till my 40th birthday celebrations though so got to get straight back to it all. Fasting today, Mon and Thurs this week. Might do next Sat too!
Hope you've all had a good week, look forward to reading all your posts later Grin
