5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Have had a fab few days away involving a fair bit of eating including massive hotel breakfasts. I'm not going to attempt a fast today but I am at least challenging myself to wait to eat as what I of course want to do is stuff my face now that I'm used to having a large feed by this time in the morning! What I should be desiring after a few days of rich food is loads of fresh fruit and veg but that requires shopping...

I have not attempted a weigh in but everything feels flabbier. I will fast tomorrow. Monday is always a good day for a fast, it'll be a tough one though gulp. I am not looking forward to it at all actually [scared face]

BsshBossh · 07/04/2013 10:05

saf I think you've reached one of those infamous "set point" weights. Keep persevering with the fasting woe and eventually your body will adjust downwards. If you remember some of my earlier posts where I listed my weightloss in lbs over the year (from 2012 to 2013) you'll see that I had a massively long stall for the entire Autumn into Christmas! But after those months I started shifting downwards again. Here are my stats from that period (last year I weighed only once a month and only recorded losses):

13 July 12 - 178 lbs
7 Sept 12 - 168
10 Jan 13 - 166
25 Jan 13 - 164
(Currently I'm 149 lbs)

Keep on going!

Dotty342kids · 07/04/2013 10:09

saf I didn't realise but your losses / time doing this is very similar to mine. I started at 11st 8lbs about 9 weeks ago. Got down to 11st0lbs just before Easter weekend and am now back at 11st2lbs. Yesterday was supposed to be a fast day but baking biscuits with the kids proved too much to handle so had couple of biscs, followed by fasting day dinner, followed by a couple of "secret" bakewell slices. Oooh dear.
Still a fair amount of Easter choc around to tempt me but am going to do proper fast days tomorrow and Thurs. And Sat too if I feel it's necessary as only 12 days till I turn the big 40 and a weekend away with all my best friends in a spa hotel so want to be under that elusive 11 if it kills me!!
Keep at this with me, we WILL get into the 10's, we will!! Grin

swallowedAfly · 07/04/2013 10:20

thanks bssh and well done. i wonder what changed to start dropping again?

dotty - right - will do. we will see ten something this coming week and hopefully it won't kill us Smile

virginposter · 07/04/2013 11:22

saf when you look at what you've achieved in such a short time it's very good. I've been doing this for 7 months now and have had many stalls along the way but I've just kept to the eating plan even when feeling sad at not losing. You know this works so just keep a positive attitude, keep exercising (found I lost more when I did) and maybe keep swapping from 5:2 to 4:3.
Eventually your body will respond the way you want, just keep going Smile

Prawntoast · 07/04/2013 11:26

I'd lost just over a stone and found in the last three weeks that the loss was not exactly stalling but I wasn't seeing more than half a pound a week coming off, I'm not near my ideal weight so it's not my body trying to tell me not to lose anymore so I've upped my exercise, nothing drastic just half an hour on the exercise bike. Will be interested to see whether this has any impact.

aroomofherown · 07/04/2013 12:04

Thanks for the advice frenchfancy and postmanpatscat. I'm fasting today and spent an hour in the gym this morning, and about to go for a half hour walk, so lets see how it goes.

ellenbrody · 07/04/2013 12:28

Hi everyone, thanks for comments re TDEE! We went to a party last night and ate loads of buffet style nibbles. I'm not fasting today, but as I've only eaten a pear so far, I reckon I could manage a mini fast.

I continue to enjoy reading this thread and check in twice a day, although I don't post that often. When I'm wavering, as I have recently, it helps focus me.

Enjoy the rest
of your day everyone.

Breadandwine · 07/04/2013 14:22

Just finished lunch and decided to open a new packet of ginger biscuits*.

To prevent me having 6 or more in one go, as I would have done previously, I break each biscuit into 6 small pieces and nibble them slowly.

They've now gone and I'm eyeing up the packet - but I've managed to locate the kitchen timer and I've set it for 15 minutes.

Already, after just 4 minutes, I can feel my desire for another biscuit waning.

*From Lidl at 33p, these are brilliant for any palm oil-avoiding vegan! Smile

And only 45 cals per biscuit.

Breadandwine · 07/04/2013 14:27

Meant to say "I broke 2 biscuits into 6 small pieces each..."

GreenEggsAndNichts · 07/04/2013 15:50

B&W My son does that. Wink Look mummy, FOUR biscuits.

Are they nice biscuits? I love Lidl, and avoiding palm oil is always a good thing.

I've not been keeping up with the thread these last few days, but will have a read tonight before doing a new one (I imagine it'll be tonight?!) DH is off to the US on business tomorrow for a while, so I'll probably have a bit more time to spend here.

Yesterday was a half-fast: I didn't eat until late evening, when we went to a friends' house and ended up having wine and takeaway. It was a lovely evening.

Fasting tomorrow!

saf I suspect I was eating at TDEE and over during that time as I stopped regularly monitoring my calories so my body got used to maintaining at around 168 lbs (my setpoint then), so when I started counting calories again my body was jolted into action. Then after a few more weeks I started 5:2 which surprised my body yet again!

BsshBossh · 07/04/2013 16:29

B&W I love the kitchen timer idea!

swallowedAfly · 07/04/2013 17:34

well a) i have my period which is wonderful because now i think of it i stalled for quite a while before my last one so maybe this will be the release point and b) i impressed myself by going to my parents for lunch but electing only to have three roast potatoes and lots of veg - no meat, gravy or yorkshires.

where is our roast dinner faster expert? how many cals do we reckon in 3 roasties and a heap of boiled veg (carrots, broccoli and beans)?

thus far that's all i've had today and if i had a clue as to how many cals it is i might still be online for an impromptu fast.

sorry me me me AND tmi Wink

postmanpatscat · 07/04/2013 18:09

saf if ready made Yorkshire puds they are possibly lower calorie than roast potatoes - puds are usually

swallowedAfly · 07/04/2013 18:59

puds or spuds? i didn't have yorkshire it was my dad's home made slab of yorkshire - def calorific.

Mimi3333 · 07/04/2013 19:00

Hello! I have decided to start the 5:2 with my first fast day being tomorrow. I got on the scale for the first time in a few months today and realise I have gained a stone since my baby was born! Shocking to think I was a stone lighter the day after having a baby 10 months ago! For my first fast day I plan to have two weetabix with skimmed milk, a banana and a piece of toast with 1/4 tin of beans. I think I can get all of that for under 500 cals. I would be really interested if any of you have experimented with the days of your fasts for example whether you get better result having them together or separate and how much difference it makes. x

BsshBossh · 07/04/2013 19:08

Welcome Mimi :) When are you going to eat your 500 cals? If you eat the Weetabix first thing you may find yourself more hungry but if you eat the baked beans on toast first then you're more likely to feel fuller for longer. Most fasters find it easier to eat more protein and veg and less carbs on their fast days (even though 5:2 isn't a low carb WOE).

Mimi3333 · 07/04/2013 19:08

PS I am a Stay at home mum and a boredom eater! Any ideas for keeping my mind off my toddlers snack cupboard?????????

Mimi3333 · 07/04/2013 19:09

Oooh thanks BsshBossh that is really helpful thank you! x

swallowedAfly · 07/04/2013 19:16

yes i'd avoid the weetabix and the toast tbh. you could have a couple of scrambled eggs when you can't hold off any longer and still have cals for a whole can of beans with a spoon of philly light in for your tea if you skip the bread and cereal.

Bramblesinafield · 07/04/2013 19:38

Well I'm on my hols and whilst not planning to fast this week am eating mindfully - as mindfully as the wind and rain outside will allow. The joys of the uk!

However, needed to find a belt as almost lost my trousers this morning walking along as they were so loose!

headintheclouds · 07/04/2013 20:54

Hi All,
im back from my week away at my Mums in the South! * Saf and dotty i had a great week eating and drinking lots and would guess Ive put a bit back on! did manage to stay within my TDEE but only managed 1 fast ! I feel enormous and havent dared get on the scales yet! TMI but its TOTM for me also so Im hoping some of the gain is due to thatBut back to the routine tomorrow and I will weigh in pre fast( but ignore it if I dont agreeGrin ).
Good luck and stick with it

Mimi3333 · 07/04/2013 21:26

It is going to be hard I am such a carb queen!

I hope you are enjoying your holiday Bramblesinafield.

BsshBossh · 07/04/2013 21:34

Mimi I love my carbs too and I can eat them all I want 5 days a week Grin. It's just easier for me to restrict them a bit on fast days (note I said restrict, not eliminate). Make this your fast day mantra "I can eat it tomorrow!" (You can totally ignore my advice, by the way. My DH, who fasts once a week only - for health not weight - happily eats lots of carbs on fast days but, like me, he saves all his calories for a single meal in the evening so is thoroughly satiated by that meal and then it's bedtime).
