5:2 Diet Thread! Number sweet 16!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/03/2013 20:05

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Welcome back dotty

Got my fitbit today, wonder how it will cope with fast days when I go to the gym? I'm doing 4:3 this week because I stuffed myself last night Grin. Pizza, garlic bread and chocolate, yum!

swallowedAfly · 06/04/2013 13:14

wildwater - good luck to you - that's all BIG stuff going on. well done for still fasting.

welcome back dotty - glad the scales haven't gone too mad for a break Smile

well after a night out with far too much beer i am down to 11.0.6 today (was 11.2 yesterday after a fast day) Confused god knows what is going on with my body this week. i only managed one fast this week. haven't eaten yet today so i'm wondering whether to just fast. ds is at his grandma's till this evening - coming home in time for doctor who and cuddles on the sofa so it's not like i've got a taxing day ahead of me. the hangover i'm nursing might make it a challenge but damn it would be good to see 10 something finally! Grin beginning to feel like the holy grail!

welcome to the newcomers! brave of you to start in the school holidays i must say - i find them a real challenge.

ellen - if you want to increase activity without formal exercise i can highly recommend a decent pedometre - i wear it on work days and it incentivises me to keep getting up from my desk and going for a walk around college regularly. it allows you to see how much you move and to increase that and build more walking into your everyday routine.

virginposter · 06/04/2013 13:54

saf hope you go for it and do a sccessful fast today. I think we are all rooting for you to post 10 something this week. I know I was over the moon when it happened to me and now I'm only 1 lb from seeing 9 something. Good luck Smile

swallowedAfly · 06/04/2013 14:14

ooh 1lb - that is tantalising vp and very encouraging to read - thank you Smile

akarucker · 06/04/2013 14:21

peplum41 my insomnia is still bad (but I suffer from it anyway, it just seems to be made worse by this).

I put yesterday's disaster behind me, and although I can't fast over this weekend (too many family events), I am at least eating 'normally', which is still somewhat alien to me, so it's a big accomplishment to even do that.

Good luck weekend fasters.

Dotty342kids · 06/04/2013 14:39

thanks for the "welcome back"'s! And saf that is brilliant, you'll soon be in the magic 10 zone Grin

ellenbrody · 06/04/2013 15:53

swallowed, do you eat back the calories from walking or just set the TDEE calculator to 'light exercise'? Mine is set to sedentary and on days I do a Jillian DVD (3x per week), I add those cals on MFP and eat them back, but on other days I try and stick to the 1450 (hard for me- I'm a pig!).

shankaron · 06/04/2013 16:07

Last week : 164 lbs
This week : 161.8lbs

Fasting days 500 calories & Feed days 2000-2200 calories
I am really starting to enjoy this diet Grin

Breadandwine · 06/04/2013 16:36

Just thought I'd share with any newbies - and anyone thinking of coming on board:

I began this WOL on the 27th Feb 2012 - half-heartedly, because a quarter of your daily calories seemed so extreme Shock - wholeheartedly, after the Horizon programme in August. Smile

I tell my story - and all I've learned over the past year (not just about IF, but about how the cells of the body work) - in several posts on my blog:

nobreadisanisland.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/eat-less-live-longer.html

And yesterday, I saw my doctor, to get the results from my recent fasting blood test:

BP 127/79 - which he described as 'perfect'
Cholesterol: HDL 1.7, LDL 3.1
Total cholesterol/HDL ratio 2.9

The doc said that these results were as good as he?d ever seen. I?m guessing he meant for a 75 year old man.

I forgot to ask what my cholesterol was 12 months ago, but, from memory, it was 'OK'.

On the subject of my low heart rate - 45 a couple of weeks ago, 48-49 yesterday, the doc was quite relaxed. No need to worry.

My 10 year prognosis is that I have a 21.9% chance of getting a heart attack or a stroke. Given that someone of my age is automatically given 20%, I?m quite happy with that.

Apart from these results, I'm absolutely on top of my game - I feel about 40 instead of my real age, and, where ever I go, there's a spring in my step.

I'm looking forward to the next 25 years! And, as someone else said, I can't envisage a week when I don't fast at least once!

(Ps. I should say that I have mild COPD from smoking over 40 years ago - but that is well under control and does not affect my prognosis.)

I first came on to these threads back in October - and most of what I've learned has been as a result of that.

So, many thanks to you, GreenEggs Thanks and to all the friends I've met on here who've contributed to my knowledge and development!

Sheila · 06/04/2013 16:40

That's a lovely story Bread, thanks for telling us. Hope I can follow your inspiring example. Smile

LaurieFairyCake · 06/04/2013 17:20

That's fantastic Bread Smile well done you!

I have wonderful news to report today - first stone gone in 10 weeks Grin

Happy as can be - so happy I've just done a double fast for the first time, second day easier than the first Shock

Roll on the next 3. I could not love this more.

In fact I'd really like to start up a support club like WW or Slimming World for this (not charging, just to cover the meeting room fee). I just want to spread the word about how easy this is. I could have a table with cake on it for those on eating days Grin and Clipper teas on the other table for those fasting Grin

Dotty342kids · 06/04/2013 17:42

ooh Laurie that's great news! How exciting!

swallowedAfly · 06/04/2013 17:51

ellen i don't calorie count except on fast days. logging and counting just makes me obsess and want to eat more.

went for a big fry up with a friend this afternoon so far from a fast day but was lovely and we were both on rare child free time. will fast on monday.

well done laurie. i started out bouncing around the early 12's and am now bouncing the early 11's so a stone down too. fingers crossed for the next one!

dogsdays · 06/04/2013 18:33

just looking for a bit of advice - lurk most of the time with occasional posts - Ive been doing this for about 13 weeks, lost 11 1/2 lbs and got to 9st 10 lbs amazing for me but seem to have hit a bit of plateau and am 'stupid eating' in response have gone up 2 lbs after 3 weeks of staying the same - think I need to go back & reread some of the threads and advice/ log my fitness pal & not snack Confused any tips and advice would be welcome

LaurieFairyCake · 06/04/2013 19:15

Thanks Dotty and well done Swallowed (I'm hoping the next stone is gone by the summer holidays)

Dogdays - you could mix it up a bit - do 4:3 one week, or just stick with it - so many people have reported stalling and then dropping all of a sudden. You're doing brilliantly remember.

I think one of the amazing things about this plan is the mental shift to weekly calories rather than that old thought of 'Ive fucked my diet for the day, I might as well order a pizza'.

Maybe we can really stretch that thought to monthly or 2-monthly thinking so that the individual week by week weight loss is less of impact - some weeks I've lost nothing, actually it's taken me just over 3 weeks to lose 2pounds - which is why it's so great to look at the overall 10 week, one stone loss.

The longer term view I take the more likely I personally can stick with it, I already know it works and I want the health benefits for ever.

At this rate I will be a size 10 by Christmas - I will have lost 15 years of weight hassle and I will have done it by eating cake 5 days a week Grin

dogsdays · 06/04/2013 20:20

thanks for that - I know what to do - deep breath and get on with it because i love this WOE

mumrunner · 06/04/2013 20:56

I just want to update my long term development on this WOE, I started last September so I've been doing this for 7 months. So far I've loss 29lbs, and yes there were weeks maximum 5 that I did not loss weight but I still carried on because it is an easier way of eating and in fact I've eaten too much in my eating days yet I still loss some weight! NSV recently was buying size 6 skinny jeans from Next (was size 14 to start with) and yes it fits perfectly. I've still got 5lbs to reach goal but it's been 4 weeks now that I've plateaued but I'm happy with my current weight that I'm in no hurry after all this is now a way of eating for life. I've been doing a lot of running on fasting and eating days since I'm training for London marathon and my running has really become faster since losing a lot weight.

aroomofherown · 06/04/2013 21:52

Hi everyone, I've been lurking around here. The stories are so inspirational, so thanks for sharing.

I've been trying out fasting over the past few weeks and it's getting easier. The first day I caved at dinner in agony, but this week I didn't even feel that hungry even on about 300 calories - although I'm doing 2pm to 2pm because its easier and I don't have to include two sleeps, only one

I hope this hasn't already been asked somewhere, but I've just started going back to the gym again and I'm not sure how a gym workout on a fast day will do. Is it a crazy idea for someone quite new?

lemonstartree · 06/04/2013 22:02

i really enjoyed te fast yesterday. Was hungry at times but I'm used to that in a way - used to work v busy night shifts with no chance to eat....

was 1 lb lighter on scales this morning but, more importantly, felt bright, alert, positive and my jeans felt looser...

I have worked out TDEE and hope to average under that over the non fasting days. I feel very aware of what I am eating today, DP bought me a croissant in bed this morning - I ate it because it was a kind thought, and I love him, but was aware it was about 300 cals I could have better spent ! Next fast Monday... :-)

BsshBossh · 06/04/2013 23:14

Hi Dotty!

Saf well done on the loss. You too Laurie. And all other losers Grin.

BreadandWine excellent bloodwork results.

Mumrunner that's incredibly inspirational.

My TOM is here and, as usual, I'm eating for Britain. Am a ravenous vacuum Hoovering every food in sight. I know it will pass by Monday and I'll be fasting but every bloody month I'm like this for a few days Angry.

frenchfancy · 07/04/2013 07:05

aroomofherown lots of us exercise on fast days, often with very good results. Looking back at cavemen it makes sense, after all if you were hungry you would need to hunt down game. If one got weak because one hadn't eaten for a few hours the human race would not have survived this long.

ellen have you checked out your TDEE on other calculators. My TDEE on MFP is 200 below other calculators. As you are on maintenance it could be worth looking that up and altering accordingly.

swallowedAfly · 07/04/2013 09:20

back up to 11.1.6 this morning. feel bad for people congratulating me because i haven't had any real weight loss for a while now. basically bouncing around the early 11's. realised this morning though that the highest i've seen is 11.2 for over a week now so the bounce is small and this weight (11 to 11.2) seems very stable and i did only manage one fast this week so it's all good really. i guess if i was at my target weight i could maintain with 6:1.

i am not though obviously!

if worst comes to worst and i only maintain over the easter holidays it's not the end of the world. will be back at work and in routines in a weeks time and actually my activity levels have also dropped dramatically with not working so maintaining is ok.

obviously i am trying to convince myself here no one else Grin

am trying to see it as ok my body is adjusting and acclimatising to this new weight which is a stone less than i started at and soon it will chill and start burning more fat.

i think i have been doing this for about 9.5 weeks now. another 9.5 weeks would take me to early june and if i lost at the same rate i'll be 10st then. am hoping it isn't the same rate tbh as this rather long stall has thrown me but either way 10st before summer holidays would be good going and i do kind of have faith that this is sustainable and my body is genuinely adjusting rather than just crash dieting for cheap thrills of skinniness that don't last. done that a few times in my life.

sorry epic post - rationalising and trying to reassure myself!

swallowedAfly · 07/04/2013 09:22

oh and in good news i've discovered a local pilates class on a friday morning which i could make it to as i've recently switched to having friday's off and ds is at school Smile

postmanpatscat · 07/04/2013 09:23

Another fast day exerciser here - I go when I can, and if it happens to be a fast day it's not a problem. I usually spend 30 mins on cross trainer then run 6k at 9km/h so fasting isn't exactly holding me back!

postmanpatscat · 07/04/2013 09:25

Well done on your perseverance saf :)
