5:2 Diet Thread: Part Four! Sit down, have a cuppa..

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi Losers normal day for me and had family lunch today Nigella's ham cooked in coke with mash and veg, a little pavlova and some Wine felt stuffed and have not had anything tonight. Appetite definitely reduced and no guilt Grin hope it's going well for weekend fasters

hoops997 · 06/10/2012 20:49

MOB my stomach has defo shrunk, I keep promising myself cake on feast days but never get round to eating it as I'm full eating veggies and hearty meals, and I've stopped snacking between meals. Also the choices I make and ask myself if I'm hungry or bored, normally bored Grin

TalkinPeace2 · 06/10/2012 21:24

Manonboard
the trouble with gastric bands and all that malarkey is that the actual chemistry of which bits of the stomach absorb what is still poorly understood (look up heliobacter pylori for a recent reversal in views)

the better one that I remember Diana Rigg saying was that she and air hostess friends used to take a silk thread and tie it around their waists - if it dug in they were putting on weight. Within months they worked out what they could eat and drink that did not make the thread dig in ....

We all (inc kids) had a big brunch today and then were going to go out for icecreams - but the place was full so we came home and just had supper as planned : apart from the wine, instant, painless, calorie deficit.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 06/10/2012 22:04

Yes the original bypass surgeries really turned up a lot of problems. I remember a man from an old cooking forum I used to frequent. He made a thread posting about his wife's progress with the surgery, with the idea of detailing how/what she was eating over time (was a cooking forum after all). Anyone who visited semi-regularly knew her story, she lost loads of weight, and everything was generally positive. A year or two down the line he came back with horrific updates; she'd started passing out regularly, couldn't walk, all kind of muscle distress. Turns out when they remove part of your digestive tract, your body doesn't have the time to absorb all of the nutrients it needs to from the food. Even taking supplements regularly hadn't helped.

I'm going off on a tangent, sorry! I think the bands are slightly better, but as a solution aren't great unless people learn to eat correctly. Too many of the follow-ups feature people having gained back weight because they've had it removed and reverted back to old habits, or because they've trained their smaller stomach to stretch little by little.

I think what we're doing is similar, we're training our stomachs to not expect so much food. Am still loving it. :)

The SIL of our best man died suddenly leaving 4 school age children after never settling her system after gastric surgery.
AND
the trouble with surgery (people at the gym have had it) is the weight loss is SO FAST that your skin cannot catch up
whereas lass in the pool has lost around 8 stone (she's 5 foot) and her skin has only just started to get loose as she's exercised every day for those 15 months...
AND
any "intervention" will not have the blood chemistry benefits that skinnymalinks like me are aiming for

and I'm FIRMLY of the opinion that this works BECAUSE WE ARE EQUAL
I may have a BMI of 21
you may have a BMI of 39
I may be 47
you may be 22
BUT - two days a week we eat EXACTLY the same meals....

ManOnBoard · 06/10/2012 23:19

TP2 Perhaps I didn't express that very well it was just the similarities in the lack of appeal of certain foods and the reduction in appetite that struck me and that this may be due to the stomach shrinking. If I gave the impression that I am advocating having gastric bands fitted I apologise but I certainly am not. The arguments for and against any form of elective surgery are probably for another forum and as for being 22, I wish.

One of your earlier posts mentioned Dr Mosley not being a fan of exercise, did you see one of his other programmes where he was assessing the benefits. They found that he was genetically a low responder to exercise and this was confirned by actually putting him on a training programme and finding little or no improvement, which may explain his attitude.

TalkinPeace2 · 06/10/2012 23:25

:-)
I know he had his reasons...
And I also fully 'get' that you were not an advocate of surgery
BUT
MN and this forum have been known to be the home of the 'quick fix'
and a spot of blunt reminder that weight loss surgery is still in the 18th Century is always timely.

Have had far too much to drink tonight, all the way up to 2700 calories. Party animal me ;-)

2012fan · 07/10/2012 07:31

I think there is a culture developing especially with young people that it doesn't matter how fat they get, they can have a gastric band, as if it's an easy option. I saw a programme a few months ago where a teenager was just off to the operating theatre for hers - it was her turn as her sisters and mother had already had theirs!

Incidentally, why don't their bodies go into 'starvation mode' when they consume so few calories afterwards?

PS I'm having a new name on the new thread (thanks in anticipation GreenEggs) - I can be just as childish as MikeO! Smile

CrackerJackShack · 07/10/2012 09:08

On my 2nd fast day today. Haven't had anything yet and I'm pretty hungry. Thinking of splurging it all on a 6inch sub at subway, which will come to 472 calories....

HappyOrchid · 07/10/2012 10:46

Not been in for a while.
Week 8 is over and my fast day on Friday didn't quite go to plan, prolly around 650 cals, but hey-ho just cut down a bit yesterday and carried on.

Tomorrow is weigh in and I really don't think I've lost anything this week, but on the flip side I haven't done any exercise either. Will eat whatever catches my eye today & fast M / W / F next week, which will be Week 9 and so far lost approx 6lb. Need to lose a further 4lb to have a 'normal' BMI and an additional 8lb to be back to my favourite weight.

TBH I think with a bit of effort its achieveable. Good luck to all those fasting today.

frenchfancy · 07/10/2012 11:48

Feed day today, but I didn't feel like breakfast so I didn't have any. In the past I would have always eaten breakfast as I thought I couldn't last til lunch without eating, now I know better.

Only having soup for lunch as well. I would make it a fast day but I am planning pie for dinner with bread and butter pudding for afters :)

Thelittlestranger · 07/10/2012 12:59

I've been away for the weekend, and have just had to catch up with this thread, phew!

Welcome to the new posters!

Hoops, I have noticed a difference too, and I'm much more regular now.

Ruby, I was breast feeding my 11 week old when I first started this nearly 5 weeks ago. I have ow stopped, but I did find that he seemed to get hungry quicker the morning after a fast day. And my boobs seemed really flat. So, I would suggest keeping an eye on it. I continued until 2 weeks ago, and didn't stop because of the diet.

Had a yummy weekend of food, and looking forward to my fast tomorrow..

frenchfancy · 07/10/2012 14:18

Just checked the cals of the pie for later - comes out at 1350cals per portion (gulp) and that isn't counting the mash I was going to serve it with. :( Pudding adds another 500 cals.

Before doing this WOE I would never have checked. Probably explains why I am overweight!

So do I go for pie or just have stew?

hoops997 · 07/10/2012 14:27

Can't you have half a portion? Although if its a feed day, it shouldn't matter about calories today? I know what you mean though, I still track cals on a feed day

awaywego1 · 07/10/2012 14:40

I'd go for a small portion-what's important is that you don't feel like you are denying yourself-think of this as a long term woe (I should also take my own advice Blush)

It's been an eating weekend for me-have eaten what I wanted but been more aware and willing to go between meals without snacking which is good progress. Although have had a bit of wine and some delicious tiramisu!

Weigh in tommorow eek! and a fast day which I'm a bit anxious about as its coming toward totm and am having some weird side effects with Meds I'm taking but will see how I go-if I need to eat more than 500cals I will.
Well done to all the weekend fasters Grin

GreenEggsAndNichts · 07/10/2012 14:41

If you've had nothing for breakfast, and soup for lunch, I think you can push the boat out for Sunday dinner. However, as hoops says, do you think you need a full portion of pie? Even before this WOE, I always found savoury pies very filling, and often would only eat the filling and perhaps a little crust. It's up to you.

(I rather like stew, probably prefer it to pie if I'm honest. Grin My beef and guinness stew over a bit of potato is one of my favourite winter meals)

Tis a non-fast day here and there's a distinct lack of interest in food due to the neverending illness in the house. I've had a salad for lunch (there was cheese on it, so I'm not trying to sound virtuous. I love salad) and will have some coffee in a little while. That might be accompanied by a square or two of chocolate, if we've got the dark stuff around. I think I'm doing a pot of split pea soup for dinner.

I've got the OP for the next thread ready to go, shall put it up this evening. Fair warning for those of you planning to name change. Wink (If you do, please identify yourself in your first post in the thread! I can never keep track of those things! I'd like to change my own name one of these days, if I can ever come up with something clever enough)

OP posts:
TalkinPeace2 · 07/10/2012 14:42

French
serve a part of a portion - you can always reheat the rest later
BUT
your portion is WAY too big - think size of a cigarette packet ....

crackerjack
hope you did not go for the subway - those things are cheap because they are loaded up with cheap ingredients - salt, fat, sugar - where you least expect it.

try to hold out for a nice small wholemeal roll with a small strongly flavoured filling from home ( ham and STRONG stilton etc)

TalkinPeace2 · 07/10/2012 14:44

LOL greeneggs
I'd love to get the 2 off my name but MN central still have no idea why the original account locked - it being my name everywhere else :-)

MollysFolly · 07/10/2012 16:46

Name changes - PAH!! All the witty/humorous/smutty names I wanted to change to (I was 2012fan) had already been taken!!

Laska42 · 07/10/2012 17:32

Hello again fast day here, but i've stuck at 10st 9 now for three days so I'm owning it! (the scales even briefly showed 10.8 one daySmile). So that makes 11 lbs down now . I think I'm just starting week 7 but cant quite remember...
have made great soup that I'm scoffing as I type. Carrot lentil tomato red pepper and with rosemary thyme and chilli .. Wow its fab (though I may have put in a tad too much chilli and that's saying something for me !Grin) .. ill post it on the recipe board later..

Thanks in advance to greeneggs for a new thread.. I cant believe how fast we've rattled through this one!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 07/10/2012 17:54

Just started the new thread over here, hopefully all links work etc.

Have added links to the other threads, the recipe thread and the tip there, into the intro, as well as changing around a few things.

Fasting today and wondering how I'm going to get through a reception this evening. Cucumber batons in bag?

Jester2050 · 19/10/2012 16:08

Hi, I watched the Horizon program recently and started the diet yesterday (wish me luck).

Yesterday was my 1st fast day and was surprisingly ok.

I consumed appx 600 cals yesterday and am finding it quite interesting in working out portions/cals etc....

I am currently planning on fasting on my non-exercise days (Monday & Thursday), but am interested to know if exercise on a fast day is a "no no".

Smile
TalkinPeace2 · 20/10/2012 14:24

CLOSED THREAD

Come and visit number 5 - actually soon we'll be on number 6 !

PS - exercise is absolutely fine on fast days :-)

starlady · 05/11/2012 14:55

Anyone ... it's my first day today - just had tea and 2 coffees with minimal milk. Am planning on having waitrose spag with meatballs in a at 507 calories. Not as healthy as other options I've read about ... but would prefer to have as little to do with food as pos. Opinions anyone?
