The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Great progress sexbomb!
I'm down on my weigh-in too today, that's 6.5 kgs lost since mid august when I started.
I'm definitely concluding that having a big eating day the day before a fast day is not a good idea.

LookBehindYou · 05/10/2012 18:04

Lurking and missing the 5:2 woe. As I've reduced my calories anyway I think it would make no difference if I went back to 5:2. Am dithering.

Laska, you're a genius. That website is fantastic.

mistlethrush · 05/10/2012 18:17

Lookbehindyou - I'm giving it a go as simply reducing my calories doesn't seem to work particularly well for me - so I'm being fairly good but having a good mixture on feed days and doing 2 fast days a week to see if it helps my body to actually lose some weight rather than simply getting by on fewer cals without losing any weight...

ManOnBoard · 05/10/2012 18:24

Alaska and LBY I have not read or seen any evidence that you are wrong in that it is the overall reduction in calories that causes the weight loss. However if you watch the Horizon programme and believe that the results of fasting have benefits way beyond weight loss you may want to stick with it.

Also many on here, myself included, find that fasting for two days a week with no extreme restriction on what you do for the other five is far preferable and easier than conventional dieting. This is also psychologically easier in that you know you can just have a vanilla slice or three or whatever the next day. You may too find that after a relatively short period of time your cravings for high calorie/low nutrition foods subside and actually look forward to your fasts.

Like a dog this WOE is for (a longer) life and not just for xmas

LookBehindYou · 05/10/2012 18:45

Hi guys. I am losing weight at the same speed as when I was doing the 5:2. I stopped 5:2 because I had a panic about a couple of things I read about fertility and how women react differently to men. I loved doing the 5:2 though and found it pretty easy. It was the extra benefits that attracted me, although I have recently been told that it would be hard to notice if I went senile. Thanks dh Hmm

mistlethrush · 05/10/2012 18:50

Don't you just love them!

I've given up on the fertility thing - DS will have to remain an only. Took 6 yrs waiting for him as it was.

rubyjuice · 05/10/2012 19:13

New on here, thinking of starting the 5:2 diet and hoping to shift some baby weight. Just wondering if anyone is doing it and breastfeeding? DD is six months old and being weaned, so not exclusively feeding anymore, but still a fair bit.
Thanks

TalkinPeace2 · 05/10/2012 19:17

rubyjuice
welcome aboard.
TBH you are probably best to wait till you have stopped feeding lillt'un
as on your fast days the makeup of your milk could be a bit odd.

Sputnik · 05/10/2012 19:29

There were a couple of people on this thread breastfeeding, iirc their babies were a little older though. If you really want to try it maybe give yourself a few hundred extra calories and maybe try just once a week keeping a close eye on how your baby reacts.

ManOnBoard · 05/10/2012 20:04

This is a new (based on an old) WOE and if I had any pre-existing medical condition or had had a baby I would see a doctor before I started this. That said if I had had a baby it would make me a fortune and I could pay someone else to adopt this WOE for me while I ate nothing but Ginsters pasties, pepper steak and chips, vanilla slices, full english breakfasts, apple crumble and custard etc etc etc

awaywego1 · 05/10/2012 20:36

Well done to all today's fasters-nearly there Grin
Eating day for me, I'm eating normally but finding I am much more capable of going longer between meals without snacking which is a real bonus. I've always been fearful of getting hungry as I used to be a 'fainter' but fingers crossed I seem to be able to tolerate not eating better than predicted. Even if I stopped this woe tommorow I will still have learnt that.

MeSoFunny · 05/10/2012 20:51

I've been lurking for a bit but wanted to jump in and say hi! This is my first week and ive had my first two fasts (tues and thurs). So far I've been surprised by the reduction in snacking on my feed days, and I'm all about the snacking!

I'm a bit worried about drinking all the missing calories back over the weekend though. Wine

TalkinPeace2 · 05/10/2012 20:54

Meso
Wine is excellent on a Friday. BUT, you'll find that over time of stopping snacking and no booze on fast days your calorie level will just drop naturally :-)

BuntCadger · 05/10/2012 20:55

2nd fast day of week 8 for me and weigh in soon :-) gotta wait till dh home from supermarket. Found it fine again, actually just becoming a normal part of the week.

rubyjuice I am breastfeeding my 11 month dd and started this whe she was 9 months and more established on solids. She's still nursing 5x a day and still getting milk as plenty of wet nappies and she doesn't drink much else. However she is food obsessed! Lol. I stick I 500 calories on fast days, for 6 of the weeks I have done 5-2 for the first and 6th I did 4-3 but am better suited to 5-2. I make sure I drink lots of water, on a fast day I skip breakfast, egg salad for lunch so full of good stuff and then fish, potatoe and green veg for dinner. An options jot choc in evening and rich tea finger biscuits. I am on my fitness pal under the same nickname so feel free to add me. As of last week I'd lost 15lb and I am in the smallest jeans I own (small size 12) and they are comfy and not at all tight. Energy wise I feel fantastic :-)

OHforDUCKScake · 05/10/2012 20:56

ruby I bf, my baby is a lot older at 16 months. But he feeds every 1-2 hours in the day. I found some fast days Id allow myself 700 calories and Id still lose weight. So if you struggle on a fast day Id up it slightly.

rubyjuice · 05/10/2012 21:18

Thank you, I planning on starting slowly and just having one fast day next week. I'll keep and eye on DD though and make sure I drink plenty of water...we'll see how it goes.

hoops997 · 05/10/2012 21:28

Bit of TMI but is anyone else finding they are pooing a lot more? I only used to go once every few days, now I go at least twice a day Blush

BuntCadger · 05/10/2012 21:36

hoops nope, I'm a reluctant pooper lol Blush.

Ruby Great advice from ohforducks as ding burns about 500 cal a day so you can go over.

Right.. Had my weigh in and very happy. Another 2lb, it's been fairly consistent and a total of 17lb lost in 8 weeks of this WOE. BMI is healthy, I feel much more full of energy and happier. I never realised how much of a difference I would feel and that I needed this so much. Only 1st till I'm at my desired weight and back to where I was pre dc. I never ever thought that was obtainable.

pookey · 05/10/2012 21:44

LookBY I had the same worries after reading about the dutch famine on wikipedia but watching the horizon programme kept me on board. I don't know if I will have more children, I have 3 and we are short of space and I am lazy ... but I kind of want one more Confused, I am 33. I need to lose weight and quite like this woe so will stick with it for now but obv stop if any chance of being pg.

Didn't do very well on fast today as DP is off and I want to wait until I have lost more weight before telling him. Had a dounut Blush prob 700 cals in total.

Thina my slow cooked meal is very plain could do with something to make it tastier pos also it was done on high so not really slow! I like to do dishes in the slow cooker and add easy cook rice for the last hour and a half as the rice cooks well and soaks up all the liquid. I just chopped quite small some veg from fridge, 2 onions, some carrots and a pepper put them in the oiled crockpot on high for a few minutes added 100g washed red lentils and mixed s kallo chicken stock cube with a mug of boiled water and pored on top and put lid on. After 1 and a half hours I put in 100g washed easy cook rice then left it to cook for another 1 and a half hours also on high. Approx 800 cals in total but was enough for dp a small portion for me and a smaller portion for 3 dc to have with chicken nuggets! I had crumbled fet cheese on top which is quite low in cals.

Breadandwine · 05/10/2012 21:52

Hi Cyclistist and Laska, (thanks for re-posting the link).

I?m a frustrated cyclist, myself ? got rid of the bike when I found I couldn?t brake safely because of arthritis in my fingers. Now I?ve seen a bike with excellent disc brakes my wife won?t let me buy one because she always used to get so nervous when I was out on the bike! Sad

(Doesn?t stop me browsing all the bike shops in town - and drooling!)

rubyjuice and any other breast feeding mums (tautology?), I?m a member of ?The Fasting Connection? forum (well worth a look) and found this interesting thread on Toxins in Breastmilk (don?t be alarmed, the poster was looking to see if there was any in fasting nursing mothers):

www.fastingconnection.com/forum/Posts-for-The-Fast-Doctor/9971-Toxins-in-Breastmilk

*Hoops I?m going less than I used to these days. There?s not so much food going through the system when you think about it! Wink

Bunt, that's brilliant! And ditto re the extra energy!

TalkinPeace2 · 05/10/2012 21:56

:-) hoops
that is actually a REALLY good sign - your digestion should run on around an 8 hour cycle, with one missing for night time so one big and one small poo per day implies your bowels are speeding up : slow bowels leads to lots of nasty diseases like diverticulitis, colitis and cancer
rapid bowels are GOOD

NB
the baby boomers were mostly conceived during rationing and there's LOADS of them !

rachelblythe · 05/10/2012 22:15

End if my fast day, third and final one of the week :) this has been my best fast by far. I knew I had my chilli ready to just be heated through, so I wasn't panicking that I would suddenly find myself starving with nothing to eat. I had a bovril at about 3 then didn't end up actually eating the chilli until half 7 this evening, which was the first solid food to pass my lips,.and I wasn't even overly hungry then. I think bovril may be my new fasting best friend. Anyway, off to bed now and looking forward to a nice eating weekend. Stew tomorrow then out for an Indian on Sunday.

LookBehindYou · 05/10/2012 22:16

Very true Talkin. Food for thought arf arf.
This has emphatically not been a fast day.

hoops997 · 05/10/2012 23:11

talkin that's good to know Grin also noticed its not as smelly, then I realised I have literally cut the crap out of my diet and I'm eating stuff my body actually needs, not undigestible rubbish

mumofcrazynamedkids · 06/10/2012 00:15

hi, just saying hi, lovely to hear so many good updates and meet some new members.

been a non fast day for me, and off work, with kids at school, had a lovely almond croissant and 2 flat whites at a local bakehouse with a girlfriend for breakfast, but just some left over tuna mayo for lunch, as I realised i wasn't very hungry and then a small jp with egg mayo and a little cheese and loads of salad for supper, then half a bounty and 2 glasses of Wine this evening.

still have leftover brownies and chocolates, but oddly no inclination to eat.

i couldn't resist a weigh in and gaining a pound from last week - therefore regretted it, but i knew it was likely after very indulgent birthday dinner this week, going to leave til next friday now!

enjoy your weekend all.....half thinking maybe a sunday 3rd fast, but have a sat night out and may just need a hangover recovery!
