5:2 Diet Thread: Part Four! Sit down, have a cuppa..

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

pookey thanks for that recipie, I will give it a go. Fasting again on Monday and Wednesday, will try not to go overboard on feed days. Have a good weekend y'all.

pookey · 06/10/2012 00:25

bunt that's amazing weightloss v inspiring!
awaywego1 I have the same kind of thing - I eat just incase I feel faint or dizzy but weirdly - well obv not that weird because no food means glucose is fairly stable - I haven't really felt faint when fasting. Today I had lunch and felt exactly the same level of hunger and light headedness at dinner time as I have on days when I have waited until dinner time for my first meal.

Thanks for the link breadandwine that looks interesting.

pookey · 06/10/2012 00:36

thina let me know if you manage to make it more interesting Grin

Just reading backwards through thread - Grin @ MOB.

Hats off to those of you bf and fasting I tried and gave up too easily felt really awful after bf during the night having fasted. TBH I didn't think it could be done so been proven v wrong!

claretandamberforever · 06/10/2012 09:15

Hi all

Week 2 weigh-in for me today and as is the usual pattern of my diet it was a poor loss :-( at 0.8lbs but I did have a binge plus a night out and takeaway last Saturday so I'm actually not going to complain, so that is 2.8lbs off in two weeks (YAY) and looking at MFP my average calories for the week is 1657 per day so I think just shy of a pound weight loss is amazing! Wonder what I can do if I have a proper good week.

However I have actually started to fit into size 14 bottoms. Okay they are a bit snugger than I would like but I haven't been a size 14 in about 4 years so I'm well chuffed.

When I started the VLCD at the end of July I had a favourite pair of jeans that I had bought in a size 18 for my birthday in June from Peacocks. Anyway I was gutted when I grew out of them but a couple of weeks later I saw them in the sale, they didn't have a 16 but I got a 14 so I've been dying to fit back into them, which is today happy dance

A few weeks ago when my size 16 work trousers got too big I bought some in a 14 from primark and New Look but they didn't fit (even though the 16's were too big) and this week I have managed to fit into the Primark ones, so just the New Look ones to go.

I BLOODY LOVE THIS WAY OF EATING

MikeOxard · 06/10/2012 10:00

Ruby I bf and ds is 3 months, I've been doing 4:3 for about 8 weeks and no problems at all. Ds is big too - 75th centile. I have lost 1st 8lbs so far since starting this.

Crappy week this week though. Dh bought an Indian for us last night so I abandonned the fast, big time, and had milkshake and chocolate as well as the takeaway. I think I might even put some weight back on this week, eeek, need to get my arse back in gear! Fasting today instead though.

ManOnBoard · 06/10/2012 10:06

Just had my weekly weigh in and down another 2lbs that is 15lbs in 18 fasts, 21lbs to my preferred weight of under 14st. The BMI charts would still have me as fat but as I do weights I have a bulky chest, arms and sholders so I am not too bothered about this.

This morning standing bare chested in front of the full length bedroom mirror and feeling quite pleased with the change so far the EW (Enemy Within) came over and put her arms around me saying "Always wanted a partner with the body of a swimmer" Compliments from DW to not come along too often and as a smile began to spread across my face she grabbed my love handles adding ".....just not one wearing a rubber ring" and walked off laughing.

Women eh! Can't live with 'em, won't eat the mushrooms. Now where's that vanilla slice?

MikeOxard · 06/10/2012 11:12

Ahaha, your dw is hilarious! Also, may I just say in response to "I have a bulky chest, arms and shoulders" PHWOAR! :o

samandcj · 06/10/2012 11:19

Hi
I have been following this thread from the beginning.
I have been doing a mix of 5:2 and 4:3 since I watched the original programme. I have now lost 18lbs and am close to my ideal weight. This morning I had my cholesterol tested..........4.29!!!!!!!! The last time it was tested I was 7.6. I realise that the reduction may not all be due to this new woe (I stupidly didn't test at the start) but I am sufficiently convinced to continue. I aim to switch to 6:1 once I have lost another 5lbs.
Keep going everyone - I am a convert!

2012fan · 06/10/2012 12:57

LOL!! Just 'got' MikeOxard's name. I'm sure I heard an announcement for him at the airport! And there was me thinking we'd got yet another bloke on the thread - it was the BFing that gave it away..

Half a pound lost this week making 8 in 7 weeks. Bit disappointing as I had a really good week and the fast days were easy peasy. Having a semifast day today which I do by keeping to 200 cals till tea time then spag bol, wine and Strictly Come Dancing. Heaven!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 06/10/2012 13:17

Bulky chest, ho ho, I like this thread even more than I already did. :)

Second MikeOxard, nice namechange. Grin

Fast day here. Still down with whatever this chest infection is. This is the first time I've felt inclined to not have a fast day, but we'll see how I go later on. I don't even want to eat much, but I'd like some soup, I think. And I don't like eating this early on fast days.

Also, will be starting a new thread tonight or tomorrow, at the rate we're going. We're already at 935 posts!

Yes MikeO "hilarious", here are a couple of recent examples.

"the thing that first attracted me to you was your broad shoulders, now I realise it's just nature's way of supporting your fat head"

and showing a girlfriend of her's our holiday pics with me in trunks "before you ask yes the water was cold, must be bloody freezing in our bedroom"

I work on the theory that if you always hurt the one you love she must be absolutely head over heels with me

MikeOxard · 06/10/2012 15:35

Thanks, I'm thinking of going missing for a few days, just to give everyone the opportunity to say 'has anyone seen Mike Oxard?' hahaha

Manonboard those made me genuinely lol! A diet thread shouldn't be this much fun really!

Supervixen80 · 06/10/2012 15:42

Hi all! I thought I would drop in and say hi as I have been lurking for ages but I am inspired to give this a try! I have about 20lb of baby weight to lose, and I am currently bf my 8 wk old, and running after my 2yr old and 5 yr old yawn

Will be a bit sensible about it all I think though, and do 5:2 and maybe allow an extra 200ish calories on fast days?
Good luck to all! X

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 06/10/2012 16:01

Checking in - trying to keep up and read as I'm in the middle of 4days of feast due to friend's visiting, big gay night clubbing last night, expected hangover today and bottomless mimosa brunch with my Dad tomorrow.

There are some amazing results coming through on the thread! Well done everyone.

I'm solidly a size 10 now which is brill but more than that have found myself "naturally" behaving like a thin person the last few days, knowing I would be going out for dinner or whatever so watching what I eat during the day so I can have what I want in the evening, and finding it really easy. Honestly I think there's been a fundamental shift in my attitude towards food and eating, something I never thought would happen.

Good luck to the breast feeders, I reckon just trial and error it. I personally couldn't have done it as my appetite was through the roof - felt like I was in a perpetual state of hunger just eating "normally"!

Breadandwine · 06/10/2012 16:11

"A diet thread shouldn't be this much fun really!"

Mike Only this morning I remarked on another forum - I've never seen a happier thread than this one. And the fact that it's ostensibly a diet thread makes it even more remarkable!

I've just been told by my wife - for the umpteenth time - not to lose any more weight. But (apart from overdosing on cakes and biscuits, which I don't want to do), I'm not sure how to stop. I'm hoping I'll reach some sort of equilibrium soon.

Mintyy · 06/10/2012 16:13

So many inspiring stories here from people who have been doing this longer than me. Congrats on your amazing weight losses and improvements in health, one and all [tea] Thanks.

I think I am beginning to appreciate how/why this woe "works". Last night dh and I went out for a lovely meal, it was a special treat in a posh restaurant to celebrate a significant birthday. So we both had three courses plus wine but, like I said, it was POSH so the portions really weren't that big. The potato I had with my small piece of fish was about a tablespoonful, for instance. I had a small slice of pecan tart with a small scoop of icecream, cos that's how it comes when you're going a bit upmarket ... right?

Anyway, we came home and we both felt absolutely STUFFED. Really, like we'd eaten a huge Christmas dinner or something. I think this intermittent fasting shrinks your stomach/reduces your appetite overall or something. So, even though on non-fast days you can eat whatever you like without calorie counting - I certainly am - you are naturally inclined to eat quite a bit less in terms of volume. Hence weight loss.

Does anyone agree?

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 06/10/2012 16:29

Definitely Mintyy, it's taken me a few weeks to actually listen and respond properly to those feelings of fullness.

Meant to also say good to see a few cyclists - I'm doing a charity bike ride from SanFran to LA in a week next year, yet to attempt training on a fast day though

TalkinPeace2 · 06/10/2012 16:44

Breadandwine
My yoga teacher is doing 4:3 and her BMI is just under 21.
She's not lost ANY weight in a week or so - but loves the fact that she can go out for a silly Saturday night and not put any ON. She's 50 and the health benefits into the future are the prime driver.

A swimming friend has been low carbing in the lead up to her 50th birthday and we have teased her that she's lost a bit too much - so she's switching to 5:2 to get some cleavage back.

The thing with this WOE is that it is for the long term - and can be stopped and started as needs be (holidays etc etc)

but as Mintyy so rightly says, it changes the way you think about meals - for the better

Purlin · 06/10/2012 16:46

Hello all, have been doing this since the Horizon programme and your posts have been keeping me going - so thank you. I lost about a lb a fast day initially to a total of 10lbs, and then I seem to have stalled. Still on 5:2, but its about a month since I lost any weight. I know some of you have been in similar situations - has anyone any advice on how to get things moving again? (My BMI is 24, so within healthy range, but was hoping to lose another stone).

TalkinPeace2 · 06/10/2012 16:51

Purlin
What are you eating on your non fast days?

  • lower fat
  • limit booze to 2 days a week
  • lower carb
  • try to stick to 2000 calories ....
then the deficit of the two fast days will be taken up with weight loss rather than feast days. Also, how much exercise are you getting - I know Dr Mosely hates exercise but it IS good for us!
TheCyclistist · 06/10/2012 16:55

Yeah Minty. One of the great things about this WOE is that 'tomorrow you can eat anything you want'. The thing is when tomorrow comes you don't really fancy eating cr@p food...almost as if your body has got used to the low sugar, low fat regime and says 'thanks but no thanks.'

One of the best things for me is the morning after a fast, break-fast is great, slice of wholemeal toast, big owl of oats, cup of tea (proper milk, half a sugar), but the idea of eating a high sugar or high fat diet just has no appeal.

Hi Girlwiththemouseyhair. Good luck with the cycle, what's the distance and gradients like on that one. Going to do a sponsored End to End next year, to try and get the money to buy some kits for some kids football teams I coach...much further than I've ever done before and probably won't be fasting on that one :-)

During the week do about 20-40 mile routes locally find it easier on a fasting day as long as I ate well the previous day but by the end of the week the legs are getting a bit ropey and Ave speed drops quite a bit.

Good luck to all fasters today, rather you than me on a SaturdayWink !!!!!!

TheCyclistist · 06/10/2012 16:58

I don't eat wild fowl. For owls read bowls

Purlin · 06/10/2012 17:01

I've always eaten pretty healthily tbh, but had gotten in the habit of eating similar portion sizes to my dp. He's working away at the moment so I'm ceasing the opportunity to ring the changes! Smile

Generally I don't eat a huge amount of carbs, and when logging my normal days on mfp I sometimes have to eat more than I'd like to get anywhere near 2000 cals most days. I do try to eat a pretty balanced and varied diet though. Obviously the odd glass of wine helps there, but I generally only drink on 2 or 3 days a week. Suspect I need to up the activity levels, am trying to cycle to work more and make time for the 30-day shred, but haven't been too persistent of late. Maybe thats the answer.

Purlin · 06/10/2012 17:03

Grrr predictive text - should read seizing

ManOnBoard · 06/10/2012 20:17

Have just watched a programme called The Truth About Fat. Towards the end of the programme they fitted a lady with a gastric band which effectively gave her a smaller stomach. The doctors, during the course of their follow up work, found that with a smaller stomach the ability to consume such large quantities had played a part in any subsequent dietary changes but also that many of the patients no longer had a taste for sweet, fatty foods.
Sound familiar anyone?
