The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I've been awake since 4.45 with indigestion - serves me right! Have also worked out that I used to eat like this regularly, but until 3 years ago was able to go the gym to work it off. Since RA diagnosis (&steroids) though I've steadily put on weight....,

Lesson learnt I think.

frenchfancy · 05/10/2012 06:07

Morning all.

Weigh in today, and I've lost another lb :). That makes me 6lbs down in 6 weeks. Very happy with the progress. I feel that if I loose weight nice and steadily it will be easier to keep of.

In terms of cake this week I have been eating cake, but I have been giving myself a much smaller piece than I would normally, and I feel satisfied afterwards.

Thina · 05/10/2012 08:04

Laska - could you explain your part fast Fridays.... I was thinking of doing same so interested to see what you do (apologies if you've already explained 570 pages ago!)

captainmummy · 05/10/2012 08:32

Laska/rachel - re the noodles. I had them with pasta suace and thought they were like those 'glass' noodles you get in asian restuarants. Prob go better with soysauce/Thai type sauces. Quite filling tho. WOuld have helped if the packet had a serving size (i used the lot, just for me because it didn't look much) and a how-to-cook! I just heated in water, but the recipe on the back (beef&potato type stew) had it cooking for 30 minutes!

BurningBright · 05/10/2012 08:39

End of my third week on 5:2. Had my sixth fast yesterday. Weighed in this morning and had lost another 2.5lbs, so that's a total of 10.5lbs over three weeks. Feeling really good, too.

TheCyclistist · 05/10/2012 09:11

Another bloke signing in.

Been watching this thread from start to today and finally decided to contribute.

Watching the Horizon programme has basically changed my life (well for the last 2 months anyway!). I haven't just lost weight I've completely changed my body shape on this and basically gone from Mr Blobby to a fairly flat profile in mirror - and the last time that happened the 80's were still going strong.

For me I find not eating till as late in the afternoon as possible on a fast day (Tues, Thurs and Sunday) but having a cuppa in the morning and the odd one till the afternoon.

Then a cuppa soup (usually an Ainslee Harriet Szechuan Hot and Sour 62 cals). Then the odd Crackerbread (amazing how good they taste on a fast day, and how poor othertimes).

I'll then go to the evening and about 8ish after cooking the kids their meals I'll have either:
A can of Tuna chunks 125 cals
or
A sainsbury frozen 3 slices Roast beef in gravy packet 129 cals
or
Weight Watcher frozen Beef Hotpot 231 cals

with Green beans, cabbage, broccoli, carrots.....and most important Encona Hot Chilli Sauce.

On feed days I basically eat what I want but strangely since starting this WOE have less of an interest in high sugar stuff and have less sugar in tea, no choc bars (but alot of 85% dark choc).

Love this WOE of eating and the different perspective it has given me on life and food ect.

Good luck to you all and thanks Greeneggs for keeping the thread going.

OHforDUCKScake · 05/10/2012 09:13

MORNING!!!

After 2.5 weeks off because of my birthday, DP's birthday, and celebrations in the same week, then the following week the second worst norovirus of my life that was awful!

So start again today. Im back to my orginal weight of 10.6 but I had done this diet less than 2 weeks before so its no suprising Ive gone back.

So, HELLO!! Im in for the long haul now!

Fast day today.

Laska42 · 05/10/2012 09:19

Thina 'half-fasting' probably just a catchy name to keep me on track ..Really all I do is have one very small meal (usually an egg for breakfast ) then wait for a late dinner which is usually salad with something like steak sliced on top (of which I only have a small portion) . ...Though I do break out the wine!

Because live on my own all week , I tend to leave my wine etc for weekends when DH is here .. He doesnt usually arrive until about 8 on a friday so thats eating quite late for me .

So really all i'm trying to do is 'think like a thin person' and 'naturally' miss out a meal.. I was struck a few weeks ago by somone here saying that they had noticed that what their naturally thin siblings etc tended to do ..

Today though im meeting someone at lunchtime so it may not be quite as planned.. I didnt have breakfast and mentally thats feeling quite hard already!!. ill wait though and just have the soup at lunch and no bread ..

Good luck all fasters today ..
I havent been able to catch up withthe threads these last few days (thers suddenly got so many of us! this WOE is catching on ) so apologies if anyone has mentionned me and wanted a reply .. ill try and look back later on

Laska42 · 05/10/2012 09:25

welcome cyclistist*.. are you one? I like to get out on my bike also. if you are a way back onthie thread someone (think it was manonboard) posted a link to a cycling and 5:2 discussion board ..worth a look

I see you are another chilli head ! theres a few of us here..
My must have fast day condiment is Franks red hot Extra hot sauce .

Do let me point you to my favourite chilli website scorchio.. definately recomended !

ThatBintAgain · 05/10/2012 09:26

Morning and hello TheCyclistist. Well done on the losses everyone!

I've been up since 4.30am, I was absolutely starving and had my breakfast at 5am! To be fair - I tried to fast on Weds and cracked around teatime, but it still ended up being a low(ish) cal day, prob around 1200. Then fast yesterday which I actually managed to do but was so hungry this morning! Have a nice healthy day planned but am also sat next to a box of crisps...

Thelittlestranger · 05/10/2012 09:43

Move the crisps!!!!

Hey thecyclisist...I have only eaten chocolate once since starting this WOE and it made me feel so bleurgh I haven't touched it since (3 weeks ago). I've also dropped a sugar in my coffee this morning as it was just tasting too sweet...although I usually have sweetener in my tea, and that hasn't changed?!?!

laska, I'm doing a half fast today...tonight i plan to eat and drink what I like, but today, I plan to have some soup (100 cals) for lunch and that's it...this is the first time I have done 2 1/2 fasts in a week, and i feel good for it. Will definitely do it next week too...

TheCyclistist · 05/10/2012 09:57

Hi Laska, Yep a cyclist I am. Just about to head out for a couple of hours though them clouds are looking a lot more ominous now than an hour ago.

Thanks for the info on the 5:2 and cycling link must have missed that one will look back and try and find it any idea how many days back or manonboard could you repost if you see this.

and thanks for the link to the chilli site, tbh I think the chilli sauce is one of the reasons I find it so easy (comparitively speaking) to keep to the fasts. Green beans, cabbage et al are hardly the most inspiring of foods but Encona really spices it up.

ThatBintagain hi to you too, good luck today. For me skipping breakfast has always worked best and tricking my body by drinking tea no sugar with semi skimmed milk or the odd hot fruit tea AND keeping as busy as possible helps most......and I don't have any biscuits crisps etc in the house on fast days (I would have inserted a winking smiley face here but don't know how to :-(

ManOnBoard · 05/10/2012 11:07

TLS I am also finding that my tastes are changing and sweet things are less appealing and may even buy my idea of heaven, a vanilla slice, to see how long I can resist it.

Laska sorry it was not me who is in a cycling club, you may recall I don't even like to talk about "cycles" let alone be on one.

Yesterday was the first time in about twenty years, when I had the flu, that I have skipped breakfast and I was fine. I had always believed that breakfast started the metabolism and helped weight loss but am now wondering if it just awoke my appetite.

radioblahblah · 05/10/2012 11:34

feel i should probably say hello as have been lurking since around part 2 and have got a lot of information and inspiration from this thread, so - hello! I have been doing 5:2 for about 6 weeks and lave lost about 6 pounds. Not amazing but sure and steady wins the day and i really feel i could stay on this WOE long term. In past dieting i have always been absolutely bored rigid come around week 4. good luck to all the fasters today. IME it gets very much easier. only probs i have had have been a bit of insomnia on fast days. so have started saving some calories for a mu of skimmed milk with cinnamon and nutmeg at bedtime which has done the trick

TalkinPeace2 · 05/10/2012 11:59

Another week, another appointment with the scales, another pound gone : that is 8 since the start of term. Scales safely under 60kg, tummy noticably flatter.

DH now has to wear a belt with his formerly too tight trousers
A swimming friend has dropped a jeans size for the first time in 4 years

And the best bit is that because the 500 calorie rule applies to all of us, we are all inwardly the same, taking control of our body chemistry. Which is why it seems to be working for so many people.
Cool huh?

Laska42 · 05/10/2012 12:29

Here is a link to the 5:2 cyclists it was breadandwine who posted it.

My lunch date's cancelled! . Hmm but can I hold out until 8pm? May just have some ham and some Miso soup ..

Alaska77 · 05/10/2012 12:30

Well done TP2, great results so far. Hello radioblahblah !

Feed day for me today. I'm peckish but not starving and since I can't work out what I actually want to eat I'm grazing on grapes until I work out what I want. That's the trouble with this WOE, it takes away all your usual cravings and stops you in your tracks!

Good luck fasters today x

Laska42 · 05/10/2012 12:31

Top of the mornin' to you manonboard .. Smile

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/10/2012 12:44

Welcome to the thread, TheCyclist. I know exactly what you mean re: Crackerbread! I have a pack of Ryvita in the cupboard and having one of those after a cuppa soup feels positively indulgent on a fast day.

Non-fast day here. Still have stonking cold, suspect it's a chest infection (colds don't last 3+ weeks, right?!) I can't work up any interest in food, but I have had some toast with jam. A friend baked a loaf for me earlier this week and I've finally gotten around to it!

Our grocery bills have definitely decreased. Pleasant side effect of this WOE. :) I do find myself indulging in slightly fancier items than we'd usually buy because I know we can afford them AND enjoy them without guilt.

Top of the mornin', manonboard!

Welcome, radio, love your name :) Agree that it gets easier with time. That first week is killer.

frenchfancy · 05/10/2012 13:18

I know what you mean Alaska I am home alone, and couldn't decide what to have for lunch (feed day).

I didn't really fancy it buy I ended up with my usual pasta pesto standby, but pepped it up with some fried peppers and onions. I weighed the pasta (which I never normally do) and cooked 100g. It was a much smaller portion than I normally have but I am full after eating it.

What I really wanted was the fast day dinner I had on Wednesday (squash stew), but I fed that to the children so none left.

BelinaTheChicken · 05/10/2012 13:49

Oh dear, another fast day up the spout, went round to a friend's house for a playdate, and despite telling her I am fasting she made me a massive cheese toastie, and she is really skint at the moment, so I ate it as I felt too guilty not to. MFP put it at 526 calories (estimated weights), so technically not too bad for a fast day, but had that at 11am and there is no way I can not eat for the rest of the day, especially as I have a night shift tonight. So think I'll just miss this one out this week, as I fasted on Monday and Wednesday anyway.

frenchfancy the first time I weighed a normal sized portion of pasta out I nearly cried at how small it is compared to what I'd normally have! Now I'm happy with the normal portion, and about 75g if it's going with a 'big' sauce (rather than just pesto). I love how this WOE has totally changed my attitude towards food, though I agree with Alaska that it is sometimes hard to work out what you want on feed days

dandycandyjellybean · 05/10/2012 13:58

Hi all, so many positive vibes about this woe, it's so inspiring.

Just had a large salad (with a little grated cheese, some olives and a celebratory squirt of my fave salad cream - it is a feed day!), my first meal since Quorn tikka masala last night. That was an interesting experience, it seemed such a small portion I cooked 100g of cauli to go with it, and then could barely finish it!

I finally did weights and measures today, 5cm off bust, 7 1/2cm off waist and 2 1/2 cm off hips. body fat % reduced from 46.5 to 42.8 and 5lbs lost which I was a bit disappointed with at first, but as my dh said, that's over 9 packs of butter!!!

Considering that I have done 9 fasts in 7 weeks, and not restricted myself at all food or alcohol wise on non fast days, I am really pleased (have exercised 2 or 3 times most weeks tho). As my dh said, my fat % has gone from nearer 50 to nearer 40, which I am really chuffed about, and it has really given me an incentive to be stricter about doing it at least twice weekly, and just making slightly healthier choices on my non fast days. Slow and steady for me is best, it is the only way for me to maintain things. My next goal is to break the 40% fat barrier.

Have a two week hol in just over 8 weeks, and whilst I don't want to do a full fast day at all while I am away, I was wondering whether doing a few days of 'eating only one meal a day' fasting til dinner time thing each week might help, I don't want to completely undo all the hard work I've put in, iyswim.

Am having a very rare night out tonight with a bunch of girlfriends at an Italian restaurant. Am looking forward to some scrummy grub and Wine!

Well done fellow fasters, have a good weekend. Keep it up, we're part of a revolution me reckons! Grin

TheCyclistist · 05/10/2012 14:55

Thanks Laska (and breadandwine for originally posting it) just spent the last hour looking through the 5:2 cycling thread. Some thought provoking stuff there especially the links to scientific studies, some of which posed a lot of questions.

For me the key to maximising any potential benefit and decreasing any potential long term risk of this WOE has got to be to eat a nutritionally rich and varied diet on the days you're not fasting. With that in place I'm happy (and enjoying) living this way until more info comes out.

Alaska77 · 05/10/2012 15:31

Hi sexbombbikerchick and well done with your weight/inches/fat loss!

I'm sure your holiday plan will do the trick, surely the point of fasting is reducing overall calorie intake, just concentrating it to a couple of days a week (or whatever plan you choose to do), so by sticking to only one meal a day on a few of your holiday days is bound to reduce the overall calories.

I hope to do something similar when I go for a weekend away with DH & DC in a couple of weeks Grin

Have great night out tonight! Wine

I'm on a feed day today but as mentioned earlier I don't really fancy anything indulgent. I feel like I ought to, but I haven't worked out all day what I fancy. Most disappointing!

MikeOxard · 05/10/2012 15:45

Hi all, right bugger here, namechanged as I fancied a change.

Bad fast day here, it's the first time in 8 weeks I've had a problem really. I pigged out like buggery yesterday, even had a glass of wine with dinner (I never drink normally), I just went for it. Then when I woke this morning I was bloody starving! Had to have a slimfast. Then I was reasonably good at the 'do' at lunch today, and had a fish salad. No idea how many calories, but probably over 500 now. Oh well, water for the rest of the day then.

Well done to the losers, you've done fab sexbomb, burning and radiobla. x
