The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet. Both are two versions of Intermittent Fasting, which you can read more about here.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon recently, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like. Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average, on those days.

Here is a list of the links we've gathered so far about this diet. I hope I haven't left many out, but it was a 40 page thread! This is a good start for anyone, though:

First things first, here is a link to our previous thread, which we've outgrown. Lots of good support and ideas still to be found there. Here is the thread before that..

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

is a link to the first part of the aforementioned Horizon, subsequent parts of that episode are linked on that page.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Important link if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

And for those already fasting, here is a link to 100 snacks under 100 calories. :)

Another food link, here is a link to the BBC Goof Food site, with a list of low-calorie soups.

We often mention basal metabolic rate (BMR) here. This refers to the amount of energy (calories) a person uses when at rest; so, the basic number of calories a person needs to stay the same weight. This number is often quoted as being 2000 calories for the "average" woman, but of course is different depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, etc. Here is a calculator which will easily help you to find out what your BMR is.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are new to this diet. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous thread, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting them all in one post this afternoon. wink

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

catsrus I agree re: nothing, or something substantial. I know for a fact I couldn't do a fast day if I ate most of my calories early in the day. For me (personally, obviously others are able to do this differently) I leave eating until the evening on a fast day. I do have hot drinks throughout the day (well, usually 2, not loads of them!) and that gets me through the period where I feel as if I should be having something.

I think, though, I experimented on my first few fasts and figured this out for myself.

This is definitely a WOE for me. I am doing 4:3 because I can use the weight loss benefits, and anticipate 5:2 in my future once I'm closer to the weight I'd like to be.

Well, I've lost 10lbs in 5 weeks but I am keeping an eye on what I eaton the other days and have upped the exercise too. Whilst I've got weight to lose I do need to keep an eye on the calories on all days.

I think if people are looking for a way to lose weight that is effortless, then they need keep looking. Losing weight takes work...but why I love this WOE is because I can work it in to my way of life, and I can really see it as a way of maintaining once the weight has gone.

As mousy said...tomorrow I'm going to think like a thin person tomorrow and fast duing the day, so I can go balls out in the evening!

Alaska77 · 04/10/2012 16:23

I love the references to thinking like a thin person! I never really noticed before that thin people often show restraint on some days more than others without even thinking about it or labelling it. Since starting this WOE I've been looking around at all the skinny people at work and realising this. I'm going to try and adopt this too; for example if I'm going out for dinner I'll 'save myself for dinner' during the day. Previously I've used it as an excuse to go mad during the day "oh well, I'll probably have a good scoff later so it won't make any difference to have cake for breakfast too" Shock Hmm

mumofcrazynamedkids · 04/10/2012 17:06

afternoon all, well yesterday I had a lovely Birthday tea of egg mayo and smoked salmon sandwiches at 5pm (that was the kids tea really) followed by a late supper of Mushroom risotto (my favourite) with poussin, followed by Chocolate brownies with cream cheese frosting, and some lovely friends, lots of prosecco, and also lots of flowers.

I was utterly spoiled, but sensibly (unheard of!) drank a few glasses of fizzy water before bed and actually feel remarkably good today, and entirely able to fast.

I ate a carton of Souper Greens from covent garden for lunch today, it was really delicious and only 180cals for the whole carton and am drinking plenty of fluids today to rehydrate.

the last hour has been hard, secretaries all around my office are tucking into chocolate and biscuits, and I know there is lots of leftovers at home, but just need to collect kids, feed them and then make myself a big healthy tuna salad.......tomorrow I am meeting a friend and new baby for breakfast at a bakery, so a good incentive to continue today.

just discovered my brother started doing IF on the 13th sept after my Mum told him I was doing it, he is literally just drinking water, and fasting 2-3 days a week, I'm really pleased, he is very overweight, but eats mostly unhealthy food (he has Aspergers and has been extremely rigid about what food he eats since a small child) it's good to hear he is doing something that should improve his health, and I suspect that this WOE will work very well for him long term.

as to weighing scales, I used to weigh myself daily, and now I just weigh when I feel like I've gained or lost, on this WOE i'm aiming to weigh in once a fortnight, that way I should continue to see downward trend and that will inspire me to continue.

hope everyone has a good evening x

Thina · 04/10/2012 17:14

Not lost any weight yet, but feel better in myself. Yesterday's fast day was a success, I kept to just over 500 cals (can't believe it) and even went to Bootcamp (which I do 2-3 times a week) and felt fine. Went to bed early and slept like a log, woohoo. Felt v smug today. Wish I could out all my positivity in a jar and drink it when I am feeling de-motivated. I did change my usual fast day food which I think helped.... I had a ww yog at about 12ish (17 hrs no food), then homemade veg soup at 2pm (70 cals), then an Innocent Veg Pot at 5pm ('twas yumm scrumm, and on special offer in tesco).

Pookey - I like the sound of your slow cooked rice, have you got a recipie or is it on the recipie thread.

all - welcome to newbies, welcome to blokies, and birthday wishes to bday mums....

Finally, can you all type slower so I can keep upGrin ...my family groan when I say I have to read my MN52 thread.... Plus I have to skim read....

Mintyy · 04/10/2012 17:58

Don't think I'v posted on this thread yet so am just marking place.

Am fasting today and HUNGRY!

Having a ham and egg salad tonight, had Pret A Manger mushroom soup for lunch.

DH and I have been doing 5:2 fasts for just over a month and dh has definitely lost weight (I can see it).

TalkinPeace2 · 04/10/2012 18:18

Am hungry too.
Tea, coffee and an apple so far today.
Now have spanish omelette cooking for supper and I can smell it!

Breadandwine · 04/10/2012 19:53

Hi Minty and TP2

When I began this WOE I remember, on the first evening, googling "What can you eat when you're fasting?" And I wasn't even doing the full 600 cals bit, I was only going down to 50% of my normal intake!

Knowing what I know now, I would just peel a mushroom and eat it. Or quickly knock up a bit of veg soup.

If it's any reassurance it does get easier - by next year at this time you'll be laughing about this! Grin

Not really, with all the advice available on this board I think you'll adjust in no time at all - good luck!

TalkinPeace2 · 04/10/2012 19:57

breadandwine
funny thing is that after my 520 calories for the day (white coffee!!)
I'm absolutely stuffed.... as is DH

the real stinker is that for various reasons we had wine with supper last night - bad move. got the munchies late and did not sleep well. Maybe our livers are telling us something.

AND an evil friend told me about an amazing looking icecream parlour that has opened in town.
Will have to eat nothing all day and then have a mahoosive dessert on Saturday

GreenEggsAndNichts · 04/10/2012 20:08

hah yes. I have enough calories left today (fast day) to have a glass of wine (yes, measured carefully, still not over calories due to quite low-cal supper).

Sputnik · 04/10/2012 20:10

Well I've been doing this 7 or 8 weeks now and finding it really variable, monday's fast was easy peasy but today I felt hungry. Been thinking about why that might be, yesterday I ate quite a bit, including a lot of starchy carbs, and I think I stretched my stomach a bit which is making me hungrier today. Maybe I would be better off sticking to my usual lowish carb diet, especially on pre-fast days.

awaywego1 · 04/10/2012 20:15

Wow this thread moves fast Grin
It's been a tough one but I have made it to now with 100 cals spare-going to have a plum and a highlights!
I think being tired definately makes it harder but like other people have said the hunger comes and goes and I feel really proud that I've made It through today Grin

AGeeksWife · 04/10/2012 20:18

Today's fast was the first I've not enjoyed (only out of 3), I've sailed through the others but tea today was soup and I just can't get on with soup being a dinner, I like it for lunch but it just makes me miserable for my main meal, so I'll not do that again!

TalkinPeace2 · 04/10/2012 20:38

Geeks
How did you "present" your soup?
DH and I have found that when having a small meal, the largest bites are with the eye so we make a real point of laying the table, napkin, glass of water, side salad,
if soup - a few flakes of parmesan artistically on top with fresh ground pepper.

Making it feel like a nouvelle cuisine restaurant dish helps to make not very much feel like a great deal ....

Sputnik
yup, am low carbing by default as my stomach is definitely shrinking : still crave a bit of pasta but not a whacking great bowl full!

Sputnik · 04/10/2012 20:50

Well I don't normally crave carbs much either anymore but I blame the top of the morning effect for several rounds of toast and a croissant during the day, I then went to SIL's house for dinner and she made pasta followed by crumble, so a bit of an overload!

If I have soup for dinner I make one that isn't too "hearty" iyswim and have and omlette with it, seems to work. My favourite fast day dinner is veg curry with a few chick peas and a bit of coconut milk, very filling.

Skinnyeye · 04/10/2012 21:10

Hi Losers,
Week 5 fast day 2 today and I managed to save all my calories for dinner tonight making 23 hours of fasting. It was surprisingly easy although there was temptation all over the office this afternoon and had to stay late at work alone with the biscuits!!! I think this might be my new strategy.

Skinnyeye · 04/10/2012 21:15

I do have a confession to make though... tonight I had a ready meal Sad.After an eleven hour shift on an empty stomach I couldn't face coming home and cooking. First time I have not had home cooked proper food in 10 fasts and I am disappointed with myself. I have also been craving pasta this week and foolishly chose a pasta ready meal fortunately it was horrible and I don't think I will do that again

rachelblythe · 04/10/2012 21:45

Hi everyone. Been a non fast day for me today, fast day tomorrow. I've taken a portion of pre made Quorn chilli con carni out of the freezer and I'll have it with some cauliflower rice. This is always a filling, tasty meal, so thinking tomorrows fast should go well. I think I'll have a go at making some veg curry at the weekend and freeze some batches up. Its so much easier having pre made portions of calorie counted, tasty food in the freezer, ready to thaw over night for a fast day. I'm definitely not always that prepared though!
Got to say, I wasn't overly impressed with the Superglue calorie free noodles, the consistency was a little strange. I'll give them another go next week, or maybe I'll throw some in my veg curry.

mommybunny · 04/10/2012 21:52

Got through today and don't feel as cranky and down as I did earlier though thanks to all for words of support. It was at about, oh, say, the top of the morning that I realised why I had gotten so down to begin with, iyswim Wink.

I wish you all a nice sleep!

Sputnik · 04/10/2012 21:59

I finally got around to watching the Horizon documentary, wow.
If any of you haven't watched it yet it's definitely worth making time for.

awaywego1 · 04/10/2012 22:14

Every time I read 'top of the morning' I giggle to myself..DP thinks I'm going mad!

Laska42 · 04/10/2012 22:15

Hi all. wow I cant believe were already over 870 messages on this thread!

Well I've had two eating days and this morning was down another pound .. have just come in from a lovely meal out . Beef Rendang and veggies so will be interested to see if the pound off still sticks..

I've done 2 days fasting this week and was hoping to do another 'part day' tomorrow (as I usually do Fridays) .. but looks like I'm going out to lunch now , so I'm going to try something I don't usually manage and miss breakfast and just go for the soup tomorrow lunch time..

Will be interesting to see if I can do it ... I suspect its just a 'head' thing that I feel that I 'need' to eat breakfast but ill give it a go .. I can manage several hours fasting all day other times ..

Will be eating tomorrow evening and Saturday though , but will be fasting again Sunday..

There's far to many new posters here in the last few days to greet you all by name .. but welcome to 5:2.. in now in my sixth or seventh week ( cant remember any more!) but loving this WOE.. have lost 12 lbs now if this last pound is a sticker!!

rachelblythe Yes the noodles were an 'interesting' experience weren't they? Did you find them really filling? I couldn't manage them in my one portion of soup last fasting day .. ended up eating them over two days..

Aftereightsaremine · 04/10/2012 22:47

Feed day for me today & I have not stopped eating absolute rubbish, gluten free cakes chocolates you name it i ate it! I've worked out I've eaten around 3000 calories today but as I'm doing 4:3 I'm not stressed about it. If I don't lose weight this week there's always next week.

But if I had been dieting as I used to I would now have given up diet for good & thought Sod it. Instead I think leave it this week & start again on Monday. Very refreshing.
